Wheel Bearing Replacement Cost: What You Pay and How to Tell
Wheel bearing replacement costs between £150 and £450 fitted on most UK cars as a rough guide: £150 to £300 for a pressed-in bearing on a small or mid-size car, £200 to £450 for a bolt-on hub unit, and more on 4x4s, premium cars and bearings with an integrated ABS ring. The price is set by the type of bearing, how buried it is and whether the ABS sensor or the hub carrier comes with it. This guide sets out the figures, the symptoms and why one wheel is usually enough.

Wheel bearing replacement cost • the short answer
How much does a wheel bearing cost to replace?
A wheel bearing costs £150 to £450 to replace on most cars, fitted, and the figure is set by three things: whether the bearing is pressed into the hub carrier or comes as a bolt-on hub unit, how much has to come off to reach it, and whether the ABS sensor or its ring is part of the assembly. One wheel, not a pair, unless both are worn.
- Pressed-in bearing, small or mid-size car: around £150 to £300. The hub carrier comes off, the old bearing is pressed out and the new one pressed in. Labour is most of it.
- Bolt-on hub unit: around £200 to £450. A dearer part, less labour. Most modern front wheels and many rears.
- Bearing with an integrated ABS ring or sensor: towards the top of either band, because the sensor is replaced or transferred and reset.
- 4x4, SUV and premium cars: above £450, because the hub carries a driveshaft, a larger bearing and often the brake carrier.
- Rear bearings on a hatchback with a beam axle: the cheapest end, often a hub-and-bearing in one with the drum or disc.
- A collapsed bearing driven on: add the hub carrier and sometimes the driveshaft. The noise is the cheap warning.
Every figure here is a guide. The exact price for your car comes from the registration, because the same job on a Fiesta and a Range Rover is two different days. Send the registration through the reg check below or ring 01744 808586. For the local page on the job see wheel bearing replacement St Helens, and for the wider picture car repair cost.
What the money buys
What you are paying for in a wheel bearing replacement
The bearing itself is a modest part. The money goes on reaching it, pressing it, and the sensor and seals that come with it.
- Confirming which wheelA hum that changes when you steer is the loaded side, not always the side you think. The car goes on the ramp and each wheel is checked for play and roughness before a bearing is ordered.
- The bearing or hub unitFrom the manufacturers who supply the car makers, sized for the car and its brakes. A cheap bearing hums again inside a year.
- Strip-downWheel, brake caliper and disc, and on a driven wheel the driveshaft nut and often the lower ball joint, to free the hub carrier.
- Pressing, where the bearing is pressed inThe carrier off the car, the old bearing pressed out, the new one pressed in square on the hydraulic press. Done wrong, it is a bearing that fails in weeks.
- The ABS sensor and ringTransferred, replaced or built into the new bearing, then the ABS system checked for codes on the tool.
- New nuts and bolts where the maker specifies themDriveshaft nuts and hub bolts are often stretch-to-fit and replaced, not reused.
- Torqued and checkedThe driveshaft nut torque is what preloads the bearing. Under or over and it fails early.
- Road testDriven and listened to before it goes back. The hum should be gone, not quieter.
- A written recordWhich wheel, what was fitted and the mileage, on the invoice.
- Payment Assist if you want itThree, four or six months at nought per cent on a soft search. See pay monthly car repairs.
The hub in the photo is off the car with the strut alongside, which is what reaching a pressed-in front bearing looks like. On a bolt-on hub unit the same job is four bolts, which is why the dearer part often makes the cheaper job.
If the car is due tyres, brakes or an MOT, the two go in together and save the strip-down twice. See brake pad replacement cost and MOT St Helens.

By car and bearing type
Wheel bearing replacement cost by car type and bearing type
The type of bearing decides the price more than the badge does. These are the bands we work to, fitted, per wheel, as a guide.
| Car and bearing | What is involved | Guide price fitted |
|---|---|---|
| Small hatchback, rear beam axle (Fiesta, Corsa, Polo, 208) | Hub-and-bearing in one, often with the drum or disc, no press | Around £120 to £220 |
| Small or mid-size car, pressed front bearing (Focus, Golf, Astra, Civic) | Carrier off, bearing pressed out and in, driveshaft nut | Around £150 to £300 |
| Mid-size car, bolt-on hub unit (Qashqai, Kuga, Tiguan, 3 Series rear) | Four bolts, sensor transferred or built in | Around £200 to £450 |
| Bearing with integrated ABS ring or sensor | Sensor replaced or reset, codes cleared on the tool | Add roughly £30 to £80 to the band |
| Premium and larger cars (Audi A6, Mercedes E-Class, Volvo XC60) | Larger bearing, brake carrier off, dearer hub unit | Around £300 to £550 |
| 4x4 and SUV (Range Rover, X5, Sorento, Transit) | Driven front and rear, heavy hub, sometimes the carrier | Around £350 to £700 |
| Bearing driven on until it collapses | Hub carrier, sometimes the driveshaft and brake parts damaged | Add the carrier and the parts. See CV joint replacement cost |
| Both bearings on one axle | Only if both are worn, which the ramp check shows | Roughly twice, less a little shared labour |
Two things hold across the table. A wheel bearing is replaced singly, on the wheel that is worn, unless the check shows the other side going too. And the bearing is priced by what the car needs, not by a menu, which is why the registration comes first. See suspension repair cost for the parts that often wear alongside a bearing, and wheel alignment for the check that follows any work on the hub.
Is it the bearing?
What are the symptoms of a worn wheel bearing?
The symptoms of a worn wheel bearing are a hum or growl that rises with road speed rather than engine speed, changes or disappears when you steer one way and gets louder the other, a rumble felt through the seat or the wheel, play in the wheel when it is rocked on the ramp, and on cars with the ABS sensor in the bearing, an ABS or traction light that comes on as the bearing wears.
The steering test is the one that separates a bearing from a tyre. Load the left bearing by steering right at speed and the noise changes; a tyre noise does not care which way you steer. Uneven tyre wear can sound the same on a straight road, which is why the wheel is checked for play and roughness on the ramp before anything is ordered.
A bearing gives weeks of warning. A collapsed one takes the hub carrier with it and can let the wheel move on the hub, which is the point at which the car should not be driven. Ring 01744 808586 the week the hum starts, and see wheel bearing replacement St Helens for the job itself and ABS sensor replacement for the light that often comes with it.

How the job runs
How a wheel bearing replacement runs, step by step
-
Road test and ramp check
The noise reproduced on the road with the steering test, then each wheel rocked and spun on the ramp for play and roughness. The worn wheel is confirmed, not guessed.
-
The right bearing for the car
Pressed bearing or hub unit, with or without the ABS ring, from the registration. Ordered before the car is stripped so it is not on the ramp waiting.
-
Strip-down
Wheel, caliper and disc off, driveshaft nut released on a driven wheel, and the hub carrier freed or the hub unit unbolted.
-
Pressed or bolted in
A pressed bearing goes out and in square on the hydraulic press with the carrier off the car. A hub unit bolts on with new bolts where specified.
-
Sensor, seals and torque
ABS sensor transferred or replaced, seals fitted, and the driveshaft nut torqued to the figure that preloads the bearing correctly.
-
Codes cleared and road tested
ABS system checked on the tool, the car driven and listened to, and the alignment checked where the suspension was disturbed.
Driving on it
Can I drive with a worn wheel bearing, and for how long?
You can drive with a wheel bearing that has just started to hum for a short while, gently and not on the motorway, but not for weeks, because a worn bearing runs hot, the play in it wears the hub carrier and can upset the ABS reading, and a bearing that finally collapses can let the wheel move on the hub, which is the point at which the car is not safe at any speed.
The cost follows the same curve. Caught at the hum, it is the bearing. Left until the growl, it is the bearing and sometimes the sensor. Driven until it locks or collapses, it is the bearing, the carrier, the driveshaft and possibly the brake parts on that corner, for a job that could have been £150 to £300.
A grinding noise, a wheel that feels loose, smoke or a smell of hot metal from one corner, or an ABS light with the hum means the car should come in that day or be recovered. See wheel bearing replacement St Helens for how quickly it can be done and pay monthly car repairs if the timing is bad. Ring 01744 808586.

Wheel bearing replacement cost — paying over time
A wheel bearing never hums in a convenient month
Nobody budgets for the hum that starts on the motorway. Whatever the check turns into can be spread across four months at nought per cent through pay monthly car repairs, decided on a soft search that does not mark your credit file.
One or two
Should wheel bearings be replaced in pairs?
Wheel bearings do not need to be replaced in pairs: unlike brake pads or dampers, a bearing on one side has no effect on the other, so the worn wheel is replaced on its own, and the other side is only done if the ramp check shows play or roughness in it too, which on a high-mileage car is worth knowing before the strip-down rather than a month later.
The exception is where the price makes it sensible. On a rear beam axle where the hub and bearing come as one cheap unit and the car is on the ramp anyway, doing both rears can be less than two separate visits. That is a conversation at the quote, not a rule, and you decide.
What is always checked on the same corner is the rest of the suspension: the ball joint and wishbone bush that were released to reach the carrier, the track rod end, the driveshaft boot and the brake parts that came off. Any of those found worn is quoted separately, and none of it is fitted without you saying so. See wishbone replacement cost and track rod end replacement cost for the two that most often come up.
Pressed or bolt-on
Why does the type of wheel bearing change the price so much?
The type of wheel bearing changes the price because a pressed-in bearing is a cheap part with an expensive fitting, the hub carrier off the car and the bearing pressed out and in on a hydraulic press, while a bolt-on hub unit is a dearer part with a cheap fitting, four bolts and the sensor, so the two often land at a similar total by different routes and the car, not the garage, decides which you have.
The ABS sensor is the other variable. On many modern cars the sensor reads a magnetic ring built into the bearing seal, so the bearing has to be fitted the right way round and the sensor gap is fixed by the part. Fit the wrong bearing, or fit it backwards, and the ABS light comes on within a mile. That is a mistake we have seen come in from elsewhere more than once.
Which type your car has, and what it costs, comes from the registration. Send it through the reg check and we tell you the type, the band and the next slot. See ABS sensor replacement for the sensor side and car repair cost for how this job compares with the rest.
The numbers

Where the cars come from
Wheel bearings replaced for drivers across St Helens and the towns around it
Boundary Road is a couple of minutes off the A58 and the Linkway. Most bearings are done while you wait or within a half day.
Cars also come over from Widnes, Warrington, Wigan and Liverpool, usually after a quote that included the wrong type of bearing. Wheel bearing replacement St Helens covers the job and garage services in St Helens everything else done here.
Worth knowing
Why the driveshaft nut torque decides how long the new bearing lasts
A pressed-in bearing is preloaded by the driveshaft nut. Torque it too little and the bearing has play from the first mile; too much and the rollers run tight and hot. The figure is specific to the car and it is applied with the wheel on the ground, in one pull, with a new nut where the maker specifies one. A bearing fitted with an impact gun and a reused nut is the commonest reason a six-month-old bearing hums again.
It is a small thing that is invisible on the invoice, and it is why the job is done here by someone who has done it a few hundred times.
MOT
Will a worn wheel bearing fail the MOT?
A worn wheel bearing fails the MOT when the tester finds excessive play or roughness in it, which is a major defect, and a bearing with an ABS sensor built in often fails the test a second way by lighting the ABS lamp, so a hum that has been there a few months is worth dealing with before the test rather than after a fail sheet.
The tester rocks each wheel and spins it with the car on the lift, which is the same check done here at a service, and a bearing that hums on the road but shows no play can pass on the day and fail the next one. That is not a reason to leave it; it is a reason to have it checked properly rather than rely on the test.
Where a bearing is found at the MOT here, the repair is done in the same building, usually the same day, and the retest is free within the rules. See MOT St Helens for how the test and the repair run together, ABS sensor replacement for the lamp, and wheel bearing replacement St Helens for the job.

Wheel bearing replacement cost • straight answers
Questions drivers ask about wheel bearing cost
A wheel bearing costs £150 to £450 to replace in the UK as a rough guide, fitted, per wheel: £150 to £300 for a pressed-in bearing on a small or mid-size car, £200 to £450 for a bolt-on hub unit, more on 4x4s and premium cars, and a little more again where the ABS sensor or its ring is part of the bearing.
The type of bearing and how buried it is decide the figure, not the badge. Send the registration and we tell you the type and the band. See wheel bearing replacement St Helens and car repair cost. Ring 01744 808586.
A front wheel bearing usually costs more than a rear because the front is driven, so the driveshaft nut and often the ball joint come out to free the hub carrier, while a rear bearing on a beam-axle hatchback is often a hub-and-bearing in one unit that bolts on, putting fronts at roughly £150 to £450 and rears at £120 to £300 as a guide.
On cars with driven rear wheels the difference narrows. See wheel bearing replacement St Helens and CV joint replacement cost for the driveshaft that comes out on a front.
The symptoms of a bad wheel bearing are a hum or growl that rises with road speed rather than engine speed, changes when you steer one way and gets louder the other, a rumble through the seat or the wheel, play when the wheel is rocked on the ramp, and on cars with the sensor in the bearing an ABS or traction light as it wears.
The steering test tells a bearing from a tyre: a tyre does not care which way you steer. See wheel bearing replacement St Helens and ABS sensor replacement, or ring 01744 808586.
You can drive gently for a short while with a wheel bearing that has just started to hum, but not for weeks and not at motorway speed, because the bearing runs hot, the play wears the hub carrier and upsets the ABS, and a bearing that collapses can let the wheel move on the hub, at which point the car is not safe at any speed.
A grind, a loose feel, smoke or an ABS light with the hum means that day or a recovery. See wheel bearing replacement St Helens and the contact page. Ring 01744 808586.
It takes one to two hours to replace a bolt-on hub unit and two to three hours for a pressed-in bearing, because the hub carrier comes off the car and goes on the press, so most wheel bearings are done while you wait or within a half-day slot, with the road test and the ABS check included.
A seized driveshaft nut or a corroded carrier on an older car adds time. See wheel bearing replacement St Helens for booking and courtesy car if you need to stay mobile.
You should replace only the worn wheel bearing, not both, because a bearing on one side has no effect on the other, and the second side is done only if the ramp check shows play or roughness in it too, with the one exception of cheap rear hub units on a beam axle where doing both while the car is up can cost less than two visits.
That is a conversation at the quote, not a rule. See wheel bearing replacement St Helens and suspension repair cost.
Your ABS light has come on with a wheel bearing noise because on many modern cars the ABS sensor reads a magnetic ring built into the bearing seal, so a worn bearing with play in it gives the sensor a bad signal and the ABS and traction systems switch themselves off, which is why the light and the hum arrive together and go together.
The new bearing has to be fitted the right way round for the sensor to read it. See ABS sensor replacement and what the ABS warning light means.
A worn wheel bearing fails the MOT when the tester finds excessive play or roughness in it, which is a major defect, and a bearing with the ABS sensor built in often fails a second way by lighting the ABS lamp, so a hum that has been there a few months is worth dealing with before the test.
Where it is found at the test here, the repair is done in the same building, usually the same day. See MOT St Helens and wheel bearing replacement St Helens.
A wheel bearing noise changes when you steer, loading one side and unloading the other, while a tyre noise stays the same whichever way you steer and often changes with the road surface instead, and a bearing also shows play when the wheel is rocked on the ramp, which a noisy tyre never does.
Uneven tyre wear from a worn bush or bad alignment is the commonest thing mistaken for a bearing. See wheel alignment St Helens and reading the tyre sidewall, or ring 01744 808586.
A wheel bearing fails from age and mileage, from water and grit getting past the seal, from a kerb strike or pothole that dents the races, from the driveshaft nut being fitted at the wrong torque, and from cheap bearings that are made to a lower tolerance, with UK winter roads and salt doing more of the damage than most drivers expect.
A bearing fitted with the right part and the right torque lasts the life of the car in most cases. See wheel bearing replacement St Helens and suspension repair cost.
A wheel bearing lasts 80,000 to 150,000 miles on most cars when it is the correct part fitted at the correct torque, and it fails early on cars that have hit a deep pothole or a kerb, on cars that stand outside through salted winters, and on cars where a cheap bearing or a reused driveshaft nut was fitted last time.
A six-month-old bearing that hums again is nearly always a fitting problem. See wheel bearing replacement St Helens and car repair cost.
A pressed-in bearing is a plain bearing pressed into the hub carrier, so the carrier comes off the car and the bearing is pressed out and in on a hydraulic press, while a hub unit is a bearing, hub flange and often the ABS ring built into one bolt-on assembly, so it is a dearer part with a quicker fitting, and the two often land at a similar total by different routes.
The car decides which you have. See wheel bearing replacement St Helens and ABS sensor replacement.
You do not usually need a wheel alignment after replacing a wheel bearing, because the bearing does not set the geometry, but where the ball joint, wishbone or track rod end was released to free the hub carrier, or where the car is on the ramp with the wheel off anyway, the alignment is checked and corrected if it is out.
It is included in the check here rather than sold as an extra. See wheel alignment St Helens and track rod end replacement cost.
A wheel bearing replacement includes the hub where the car uses a bolt-on hub unit, because the bearing and hub are one part, and does not where the bearing is pressed into a separate hub carrier, unless the carrier has been damaged by a bearing that was driven on too long, in which case the carrier is quoted alongside.
A collapsed bearing is the usual reason a carrier is needed. See wheel bearing replacement St Helens and CV joint replacement cost for the driveshaft that can go with it.
A badly worn wheel bearing can cause a vibration through the wheel and the seat and a slight pull to one side, because the play lets the hub move and the brake disc run out of true, so a car that shakes and hums together is worth checking for a bearing before the wheels are balanced or the brakes are blamed.
A shake under braking alone is usually the discs. See brake pad replacement cost and wheel alignment St Helens.
4x4 and Range Rover wheel bearings are more expensive, usually £350 to £700 fitted as a guide, because both axles are driven so every corner has a driveshaft to release, the bearings and hub units are larger and dearer, and on many the brake carrier and the ABS sensor come off with the hub.
The registration tells us the exact part and band. See Land Rover specialist St Helens and wheel bearing replacement St Helens.
We use bearings from the manufacturers who supply the car makers, which are the genuine part in a different box, and genuine hub units where the car needs a specific ABS ring or a part only the maker supplies, because a cheap bearing made to a lower tolerance is the commonest reason a bearing hums again inside a year.
You are told which is being fitted and why. See car repair cost and wheel bearing replacement St Helens.
You can spread the cost of a wheel bearing replacement over three, four or six months at nought per cent with Payment Assist, decided on a soft search that does not mark your credit file, which matters when a 4x4 bearing or a bearing that has taken the hub carrier with it pushes the bill up.
See pay monthly car repairs for how it works and car repair cost for the figures, or ring 01744 808586 and we set it up when you book.
We replace wheel bearings at the workshop on Boundary Road in St Helens, for drivers from across the borough and from Haydock, Prescot, Rainhill, Newton-le-Willows, Billinge, Widnes, Warrington, Wigan and Liverpool, because a pressed-in bearing needs the hydraulic press and the ABS check needs the tool.
Most are done while you wait or within a half day. See the contact page for directions and garage services in St Helens for everything else done here.
When a wheel bearing is replaced the rest of that corner should be checked, because the ball joint and wishbone bush released to free the carrier, the track rod end, the driveshaft boot and the brake pads and disc that came off are all at the same age and often worn together, and checking them while the corner is apart saves a second strip-down.
Anything found is quoted separately and nothing is fitted without you saying so. See wishbone replacement cost and brake pad replacement cost.
