WHEEL ALIGNMENT • ST HELENS

Wheel Alignment St Helens: What It Is, When You Need It and What Gets Measured

Wheel alignment is the setting of the angles your wheels sit at, camber, caster and toe, measured on a four-wheel rig against the manufacturer figures for your exact car. A car that pulls, a steering wheel off centre, or a tyre wearing on one edge is geometry, and it is measured rather than guessed at here. You see the before and after figures on a printout, and the check is free when we fit your tyres. If you have been searching for wheel alignment near me in St Helens, Boundary Road is the workshop those searches lead to, minutes from the A580 and junction 23 of the M6.

What is wheel alignment?

Wheel alignment is the adjustment of the angles at which your wheels meet the road, so that all four point exactly where the manufacturer intended. Three angles are measured on each corner: camber, the tilt of the wheel in or out at the top; caster, the tilt of the steering axis; and toe, whether the wheels point slightly in or out. When they are right the car tracks straight, the steering wheel sits level and the tyres wear evenly.

  • Camber is how far the top of the wheel leans in or out. Too much either way wears one edge of the tyre.
  • Caster is the angle of the steering pivot. It is what makes the steering self-centre after a bend.
  • Toe is whether the wheels point in or out when viewed from above. It is the angle most often knocked out, and the one that feathers a tyre fastest.
  • Four-wheel alignment measures all three on all four corners and relates the front axle to the rear. Front-only tracking adjusts front toe alone.
  • It is due after a pothole or kerb strike, after any suspension or steering work, when new tyres go on, and whenever the car pulls or a tyre wears on one edge.
  • You get a printout showing every angle before and after against the specification for your car. If nothing was out, you are told that and charged for the check, not an adjustment.

Geometry that is out by a couple of millimetres cannot be felt from the driving seat. It shows up as a front tyre worn to the cords on the inside edge while the visible tread still looks fine, which is why it is worth checking rather than waiting for a symptom. The rest of this page covers what a four-wheel alignment includes, what your tyre wear is telling you, the difference between alignment and tracking, and what it costs. See tyres in St Helens for the fitting that comes with the free check.

What is in the job

What a four-wheel alignment includes

Fastlane Autocare workshop bay, St Helens, wheel alignment near me

A four-wheel alignment at Boundary Road covers every item below, takes about an hour, and ends with a printout you keep.

  • Targets on all four wheelsClamped to each wheel on the rig, so every corner is measured, not just the front two.
  • The specification for your exact carModel, year and suspension type, from the manufacturer data, not a generic setting.
  • Before readings on every angleCamber, caster and toe on each corner, printed with anything outside tolerance shown in red, before a single adjustment is made.
  • Front toe adjusted on the track rodsThe angle most often knocked out, and the one that feathers tyres fastest.
  • Rear toe and camber where the car allowsOn cars with adjustable rear geometry, the rear is set first so the front is aligned to a true thrust line.
  • Steering wheel centredSet level on a straight road, not just made to look level by adjusting one side.
  • Tyres and suspension checkedWorn bushes, ball joints and track rod ends are reported, because alignment cannot correct slack components.
  • After readings printedAlongside the before figures, so you can see exactly what changed and hold the paperwork if the car goes back under warranty.

Some cars have very little adjustment by design, and on those we tell you so rather than force a figure. Where geometry is out because a component is worn, the honest answer is the repair first and the alignment after, or the settings drift again within weeks. See suspension repair for that case and track rod end replacement cost for the part most often behind it.

Read your own tyres

What is my tyre wear telling me?

Nine patterns and what each one usually means, including the three that are not alignment at all. Run your hand across the tread before you book anything.

Tyre wear patterns, the usual cause, and what fixes it
What you can see or feel Usual cause What it needs
Inside edge worn, outside fine Toe or camber out The classic misalignment pattern, and the one nobody spots. Alignment fixes it; the worn tyre does not come back.
Outside edge worn on both fronts Toe-out, or hard cornering Geometry first. If the figures are correct it is driving style, and rotating the tyres helps.
Feathered tread, smooth one way and sharp the other Toe misalignment Almost always toe, and corrected on the rig.
Centre of the tread worn, edges fine Over-inflation Not alignment. Check pressures against the plate in the door shut.
Both edges worn, centre fine Under-inflation Also not alignment. Underinflation overheats the sidewalls and costs fuel as well as rubber.
Patchy or scalloped wear Worn suspension, or balance Usually tired dampers or bushes letting the wheel bounce. Alignment will not cure it on its own.
Steering wheel off centre on a straight road Toe set unevenly Very common after a kerb strike or after work done without a re-check. Straightened on the rig.
Car pulls to one side, tyres fine Alignment, or a sticking brake Worth diagnosing rather than assuming. A pull only under braking is nearly always brakes.
Wheel shakes at 50 to 70mph Balancing, not alignment A different job on a different machine. We rebalance rather than sell you an alignment you do not need.

Send a photo of the worn edge with the registration and we will tell you which of these it looks like before you book. If it is brakes, the brake repair page covers it; if it is a worn tyre, tyres St Helens has the sizes we hold.

Two words that get used as one

What is the difference between wheel alignment and tracking?

Tracking traditionally means adjusting the toe on the front wheels only, while a four-wheel alignment measures camber, caster and toe on all four corners and relates the front axle to the rear. On any modern car with independent or adjustable rear suspension the four-wheel version is the one that matters, because the rear geometry decides the line the front is being set against.

Setting the front to a crooked rear gives you a straight steering wheel and a car that still eats tyres. That is the failure a front-only job cannot see, because it never measures the rear. On an older car with a simple rear beam, front tracking may genuinely be all that is available, and it is quick and cheap for a reason.

If someone quotes you a very cheap alignment, ask whether it is front toe only. That is not dishonest; it is a different job. Ring 01744 808586 with the registration and we will tell you which your car actually needs, and a four-wheel job here comes with the printout as standard. See tyres in St Helens for the free check that comes with a new set.

What actually happens

How a wheel alignment runs, in order

Vehicle diagnostics and wheel alignment at Fastlane Autocare, St Helens
  1. The car goes on the rig, all four corners

Targets clamped to each wheel and the car measured against the manufacturer figures for your exact model, not a generic setting and not just the front two.

  2. You see the before figures

Camber, caster and toe on every corner, in red where they sit outside tolerance, before anything is adjusted, so you can see whether it actually needs doing.

  3. Suspension and steering checked

Ball joints, track rod ends, bushes and dampers. A worn part is reported before the adjustment, because geometry will not hold on slack components.

  4. Adjusted to specification

Track rods, and camber or rear toe where the car allows it. Some cars have very little adjustment by design, and we tell you that rather than forcing it.

  5. Steering wheel centred and road tested

Set level on a straight road, then driven to confirm the car tracks true and the pull has gone.

  6. You leave with the printout

The after figures alongside the before. If the steering wheel was off centre it is straight, and you have the paperwork if the car goes back under warranty.

The signs

How do I know if my car needs wheel alignment?

Your car needs wheel alignment if it drifts or pulls to one side on a flat road, if the steering wheel sits off centre when you are driving straight, if a front tyre is wearing on one edge or feathering across the tread, or if it has hit a pothole or a kerb hard enough to feel. Vague steering after suspension work is the fifth sign.

The pull. On a flat, straight road with your hands loose the car should hold its line. A steady drift to one side is geometry or a sticking brake; a pull only when you brake is nearly always brakes.

The off-centre wheel. The commonest sign after a kerb strike. The car goes straight but the wheel sits at ten past twelve. That is uneven toe, and it is straightened on the rig.

The inside edge. The one nobody sees. Turn the wheel to full lock, look at the inside shoulder of the front tyre, and run your hand around it. A tyre can show 5mm across the visible tread and be down to the cords on the inner edge.

Feathering. Run your palm across the tread. Smooth one way and sharp the other is toe misalignment, and it is the pattern that wears a tyre fastest.

If you have one of these, the free alignment check that comes with a set of tyres is the cheapest answer, and if the tyres are not due, the check on its own is quick. Our puncture repair page covers the tyre that has gone down rather than worn.

Getting it right

Alignment, balancing or something else?

Three different faults that all feel a bit like each other. We check which one it is before charging you for any of them.

Four-wheel alignment

All four corners measured against specification, adjusted where the car allows, with the before and after figures printed. The job on this page.

Wheel balancing

A shake at 50 to 70mph is balance, not alignment. Different job, different machine, and often done at a tyre fitting.

Pulling under braking

Usually a sticking caliper or a warped disc rather than geometry. Diagnosed rather than assumed. See brake repair.

Suspension and steering

Patchy wear and vague steering usually mean worn bushes, dampers or track rod ends. See suspension repair and shock absorbers.

Worn parts that cause it

Track rod ends, ball joints and wishbone bushes. See track rod end cost and wishbone replacement cost.

MOT and tyre checks

Uneven wear is an MOT failure once it reaches the limit on any part of the tread. We test on our own lane. See MOT St Helens.

What it costs

How much does wheel alignment cost?

Wheel alignment is priced for the adjustment, not the measurement: the check is free when we fit your tyres, a four-wheel alignment costs more than front-only tracking because it measures three angles on four corners rather than one angle on two, and if the geometry is already within specification you are told that rather than charged for work it did not need.

Two things move the figure. The first is whether the car has adjustable rear geometry, because setting the rear as well as the front is more time on the rig. The second is whether a worn component has to be replaced before the settings will hold; a seized track rod end or a tired wishbone bush is quoted separately and fitted first, or the alignment drifts again within weeks.

What you will not be charged for is a guess. The rig prints the readings, the specification sits alongside them, and the price follows from what needs adjusting. Ring 01744 808586 with the registration for a figure, see car repair cost for the jobs that sometimes sit alongside it, and spread a bigger bill on Payment Assist.

How often

How often should wheel alignment be checked?

Wheel alignment should be checked once a year, whenever new tyres are fitted, after any pothole or kerb strike hard enough to feel, and after any suspension or steering work, because every one of those can move the settings by the couple of millimetres that quietly destroys a tyre.

Potholes are the big one in the North West. A single hard hit on the A58 can knock the toe out on one side, and the first sign is a tyre worn on the inside edge months later. New tyres fitted onto bad geometry are the most reliable way to buy another set sooner than you should, which is why the check happens as standard with every set we fit.

Suspension and steering work moves the settings by definition: a new track rod end, a wishbone, a spring or a damper changes the geometry, and the alignment afterwards is part of the job, not an extra. See suspension repair and coil spring replacement cost. If you swap between summer and winter sets, the tyre hotel changeover is a good moment for the check.

Where our customers drive in from

Wheel alignment St Helens, and the towns our drivers come in from

Boundary Road is minutes from the A580 and junction 23 of the M6. Alignment usually comes in with tyres, and each town below has its own tyre page.

Drivers also come from Liverpool, Golborne and Skelmersdale, often after an alignment elsewhere that came with no printout. The tyres St Helens page is the hub for all of it.

Worth knowing

A straight steering wheel does not mean straight geometry

You can take a car with badly set geometry, adjust one track rod, and hand it back with the steering wheel perfectly level going down the road. The driver is satisfied because the obvious symptom has gone. The toe angles are still wrong, just wrong in a way that cancels out at the wheel, and the tyres carry on wearing exactly as they were.

That is precisely why the printout matters. It shows each corner against specification rather than asking you to judge by feel. If a garage adjusts your alignment and cannot show you the figures, you have no way of knowing which of those two things happened. Ours comes as standard, and we would rather you asked for it everywhere.

Four wheels or two

Is four-wheel alignment worth it on my car?

Four-wheel alignment is worth it on any car with independent or adjustable rear suspension, which is most cars built in the last twenty years, because the rear axle sets the thrust line the front is aligned to; on an older car with a fixed rear beam and no rear adjustment, a front-only alignment can be all the car has to offer.

The rig measures all four corners either way, so even a car with no rear adjustment gets its rear read and the front set to the true centreline rather than to a crooked rear. What changes on an adjustable car is that the rear toe and camber are set to specification first, which is the difference between a car that tracks straight and one with a level wheel that still crabs down the road.

Four-wheel-drive cars, vans and anything that tows benefit most, because the loads on the rear are higher and the tyres are dearer. Range Rovers, Discoverys, Transits and Sprinters all come here for the four-wheel job. See 4x4 tyres and van tyres for the rubber that goes with it.

Questions drivers ask about wheel alignment

What is wheel alignment and does my car need it?

Wheel alignment is the setting of the angles your wheels sit at, camber, caster and toe, measured against the manufacturer specification for your car, and your car needs it checked after any pothole or kerb strike, after suspension or steering work, whenever new tyres go on, and if it pulls, the steering sits off centre or a tyre wears on one edge.

We measure all four wheels on the rig and give you the before and after figures. If nothing is out you are told that and charged for the check rather than an adjustment. See tyres in St Helens for the free check that comes with a new set, and suspension repair if a worn part is behind it. Ring 01744 808586 to book.

What is the difference between wheel alignment and tracking?

Tracking traditionally means adjusting the toe on the front wheels only, while a four-wheel alignment measures camber, caster and toe on all four corners and relates the front axle to the rear, and on any modern car with adjustable rear suspension the four-wheel version is the one that matters.

Setting the front to a crooked rear gives you a straight steering wheel and a car that still eats tyres. If you are quoted a very cheap alignment, ask whether it is front toe only; that is a different job. Ours is four-wheel with a printout as standard. See tyre fitting for the check that comes with new tyres and track rod end replacement cost for the part tracking adjusts.

How do I know if my wheel alignment is out?

The reliable signs that your wheel alignment is out are a car that pulls to one side on a flat road, a steering wheel sitting off centre when you are going straight, and uneven tyre wear, particularly on the inside edge of a front tyre, which is the last place anyone looks.

Feathered tread that feels smooth one way and sharp the other is almost always toe misalignment. Run your hand around the inside edge of both front tyres; if one feels sharp or stepped compared with the other, book a check. The full pattern guide is in the table on this page. See puncture repair if the tyre has gone down rather than worn, and tyres St Helens for replacements.

How much does wheel alignment cost in St Helens?

Wheel alignment in St Helens is priced for the adjustment rather than the measurement: the check is free when we fit your tyres, a four-wheel alignment costs more than front-only tracking because it measures three angles on four corners, and if the geometry is already within specification you are told that rather than charged for work it did not need.

Two things move the figure: whether the car has adjustable rear geometry, and whether a worn part has to be replaced before the settings will hold. Both are told to you before the work. Ring 01744 808586 with the registration for a figure, see car repair cost for the jobs around it, and Payment Assist for spreading a set of tyres and the alignment together.

How long does a wheel alignment take?

A wheel alignment takes about an hour for a typical four-wheel job, covering the car going on the rig, targets clamped to each wheel, the initial readings, the adjustments and the printout, with a road test at the end to confirm the pull has gone.

A front-only tracking adjustment is quicker. Seized adjusters on an older car, or a worn part that has to be replaced first, add time and are quoted before the work starts. Most drivers wait for an alignment; paired with tyre fitting it adds little to the visit. Ring 01744 808586 for a slot, or see same-day tyres if the tyres are already gone.

My steering wheel shakes at 60mph. Is that alignment?

A steering wheel that shakes at 50 to 70mph is almost always wheel balancing rather than alignment: a wheel and tyre that are out of balance oscillate at speed, whereas misalignment shows as a pull, an off-centre wheel or edge wear rather than a vibration.

Balancing is a different job on a different machine, and it is often done when tyres are fitted. A shake that comes through the seat rather than the wheel points at the rear. A shake only under braking is a warped disc. We check which it is before charging for any of them. See tyre fitting for balancing and brake repair for the braking case.

Can wheel alignment fix a tyre that has already worn unevenly?

Wheel alignment stops a tyre wearing unevenly from that point on, but it cannot put rubber back: a tyre already worn to the cords on the inside edge has to be replaced, and the alignment is done before the new one goes on so the new tyre does not follow the old one.

That order matters. Fitting a new tyre first and aligning later means the new tyre spends its first weeks wearing the same edge. Where the old tyre still has legal tread across the whole width, aligning the car and leaving the tyre on is fine, and it will simply wear evenly from here. See tyres in St Helens for the replacement and what the numbers on tyres mean for choosing the right one.

How often should I have the wheel alignment checked?

Have the wheel alignment checked once a year, whenever new tyres are fitted, after any pothole or kerb strike hard enough to feel, and after any suspension or steering work, because each of those can move the settings by the couple of millimetres that quietly wears a tyre.

The check is free here with every set of tyres, which for most drivers covers the annual visit. Potholes are the big one locally, and a single hard hit can knock the toe out on one side with no symptom until the tyre shows it. See suspension repair for the work that always needs an alignment afterwards, and the tyre hotel if a seasonal changeover is your natural moment for it.

Does hitting a pothole knock the wheel alignment out?

Hitting a pothole can knock the wheel alignment out, most often by moving the toe on the wheel that took the hit, and the signs are a steering wheel that has gone off centre or a pull that was not there before; a hard enough hit can also bend a wheel, damage a tyre sidewall or break a spring.

If the steering has changed since the hit, book a check. If the car now shakes, the wheel or tyre is the likelier casualty. A hit that leaves a bulge on the sidewall means a new tyre, whatever the alignment says. See puncture repair for sidewall damage, coil spring replacement cost for the spring, and ring 01744 808586 if the car feels different.

Can every car be adjusted for wheel alignment?

Every car can have its alignment measured, but not every car can be fully adjusted: front toe is adjustable on almost everything, rear toe and camber only on cars with adjustable rear suspension, and some cars have little or no camber adjustment by design.

Where a car is out of specification on an angle it cannot adjust, the cause is usually a bent or worn component, and the honest answer is the repair rather than forcing a figure. We tell you that from the rig rather than invent an adjustment. See suspension repair and wishbone replacement cost for the parts most often behind it.

Will wheel alignment stop my car pulling to one side?

Wheel alignment will stop your car pulling to one side if the pull is caused by geometry, which is the most common reason, but not if it is caused by a sticking brake caliper, a tyre with a belt shifting inside it, or uneven tyre pressures, so the cause is checked before the adjustment is sold.

A pull only under braking is nearly always brakes. A pull that swaps sides when two tyres are swapped across the axle is a tyre. A steady drift on a flat road with tyres and brakes fine is alignment, and it is fixed on the rig. See brake repair for the caliper case and tyres for the tyre case.

Do you align four-wheel-drive cars, vans and Range Rovers?

We align four-wheel-drive cars, vans and Range Rovers on the same four-wheel rig, with the manufacturer specification for the vehicle loaded, and they benefit most because the loads are higher and the tyres dearer; Range Rovers with air suspension are set at the correct ride height before the readings are taken.

Vans and pick-ups that carry weight or tow wear tyres fast when the geometry is out, and the rear axle matters as much as the front. Transit, Sprinter, Discovery and Range Rover all come here for the four-wheel job. See 4x4 tyres, van tyres and Land Rover servicing.

Should I have the alignment done before or after new tyres?

Have the alignment done before the new tyres go on, or in the same visit with the old tyres measured and the new ones fitted afterwards, because a new tyre fitted to a car that is out of alignment starts wearing its inside edge from the first mile.

Here the check is part of every tyre fitting: the geometry is read while the car is on the ramp, adjusted if it needs it, and the new tyres go on to a car that tracks true. That is why the check is free with tyres. See tyre fitting in St Helens and premium tyres for the sets worth protecting.

Do I get a printout of the alignment readings?

You get a printout of the alignment readings on every job: the before figures for camber, caster and toe on each corner, the manufacturer specification alongside, and the after figures, with anything outside tolerance shown in red before the adjustment was made.

It is the only way to know what was actually done. A straight steering wheel can be produced by adjusting one track rod on a car whose geometry is still wrong, and the printout is what separates that from a proper job. Keep it with the service history; it matters if the car goes back under warranty. See why service history matters and car servicing.

Do you do four-wheel alignment near me in St Helens?

We do four-wheel alignment at Boundary Road in St Helens, a couple of minutes off the A58 and the Linkway, on a four-wheel rig that measures camber, caster and toe on every corner against the manufacturer figures, and most drivers across the borough, Widnes and Warrington reach us in under twenty minutes.

The check is free when we fit your tyres, the adjustment is quoted before it is done, and you leave with the printout. Send the registration and a photo of any worn edge and we will tell you what it looks like before you book. See tyres St Helens for the fitting side and the contact page for directions. Ring 01744 808586.

Is laser wheel alignment better than a normal alignment?

Laser wheel alignment and camera-based four-wheel alignment do the same job of measuring the wheel angles against specification, and the modern camera rigs used here measure all four corners at once with the same accuracy; what matters is that all four wheels are measured and the figures are printed, not which light source the rig uses.

Older laser gauges often measure the front axle only, which is the tracking job rather than a four-wheel alignment. Ask any garage two questions: are all four wheels measured, and will I see the before and after figures. See tyre fitting for where the check sits in a tyre visit and tyres in St Helens for the range.

Can wheel alignment be done on a van?

Wheel alignment can be done on a van on the same four-wheel rig as a car, and it is worth doing more often, because a loaded or towing van wears its front tyres fast when the toe is out and van tyres are among the dearest to replace.

Transit, Transit Custom, Sprinter, Vivaro and the pick-ups all fit the rig and all have their own manufacturer specification loaded. Fleet vans that do delivery mileage benefit from a check at every tyre change. See van tyres for the commercial ranges and commercial vehicle repairs for the rest of the van work.

Is a free wheel alignment check really free?

The free wheel alignment check is free when we fit your tyres: the car is measured on the rig as part of the fitting, and you only pay if you choose to have an adjustment made; if the geometry is within specification you are told that and there is nothing to pay for the check.

It is offered because fitting new tyres to bad geometry wastes them, and we would rather the set lasts. Where a worn component means the alignment will not hold, that is quoted separately and it is your decision. See tyre fitting in St Helens and budget tyres for what a set costs with the check included.

Does wheel alignment affect fuel economy?

Wheel alignment affects fuel economy because wheels that are toed in or out drag slightly against the direction of travel, and a car dragging its front tyres sideways by a few millimetres uses measurably more fuel over a year as well as wearing the tyres.

The effect on fuel is small on any one journey and real over a year; the effect on tyres is bigger and faster. Correct pressures matter as much for economy, and both are checked when the car is on the ramp. See what the numbers on tyres mean for pressures and load ratings, and car servicing for the rest of what keeps a car efficient.

Can I spread the cost of tyres and alignment?

You can spread the cost of tyres and alignment together over four months at nought per cent with Payment Assist, decided on a soft search that does not mark your credit file, which suits the case where a worn edge means a pair of tyres plus the adjustment in one visit.

A set of four with an alignment on an SUV is a real bill, and spreading it means the geometry is corrected and the right tyres go on now rather than the cheapest that fit. See pay monthly car repairs for how it works, or ring 01744 808586 and we will set it up when you book. The tyres St Helens page has the range.
