24 HOUR RECOVERY • ST HELENS

Vehicle Recovery St Helens

Collection, repair and delivery from one team — cars, vans, motorbikes and motorhomes recovered across St Helens, Merseyside and the North West. The difference here is that the vehicle comes back to our own workshop rather than being dropped at a garage you have never dealt with. Ring the same number at any hour — out of hours, recovery calls divert so somebody picks up. The workshop itself is open Monday to Friday 8:30am–5pm and Saturday 9am–12:30pm, which is when the repair work happens.

Vehicle recovery St Helens · One team, start to finish

Recovered to our own workshop, not dropped at a stranger’s

That is the part most recovery does not include. A truck that collects your car and leaves it at whichever garage has space has solved half a problem. Here the same team collects it, diagnoses it, repairs it and brings it back.

We recover cars, vans, motorbikes and motorhomes across St Helens, Merseyside and the wider North West, and the vehicle comes to Boundary Road where it gets looked at properly. You deal with one set of people, get one explanation of what is wrong and one price, and you are not chasing two businesses to find out what is happening.

When you ring, the most useful things to tell us are where the vehicle is, whether it rolls and steers, and what happened. Those three answers decide what we send and how quickly, because a car that will not start is a very different collection to one that cannot be steered.

Once it is here the ordinary workshop applies — diagnostics to find the fault, then repair, and Payment Assist if the bill needs spreading.

Vehicle recovery St Helens · Before you ring anyone

Three things that decide what we send

Where the vehicle is. A driveway, a car park and a live carriageway are three different jobs. If you are on a motorway or a fast road, get yourself behind a barrier and ring the police or Highways first — that is not us being unhelpful, it is the order that keeps you safe.

Whether it rolls and steers. A car that still rolls and steers can be winched and towed conventionally. One that cannot, because of a seized gearbox, a locked differential or damage to the steering, needs a flatbed and skates. Telling us on the phone saves a wasted journey for both of us.

What actually happened. Would not start, cut out while driving, lost drive, or a noise followed by nothing at all — those point at very different faults, and knowing before we arrive means the diagnosis starts before the vehicle is even back.

None of that is us being awkward on the phone. Those three answers decide whether we send a conventional tow or a flatbed with skates, and getting them before we set off is the difference between one journey and two.

If you are not sure about any of them, say so rather than guessing. Tell us what you can see and we will work the rest out, and if the vehicle is somewhere unsafe that moves to the front of the queue.

Vehicle recovery St Helens · How it runs

What happens when you ring

Four steps, and the first one is the one that matters most.

  1. Ring and tell us where you are

Location, whether it rolls and steers, and what happened. If you are somewhere unsafe, say so first - that changes the order of everything else.

  2. We tell you what we can do and when

Not a callback queue. You get told whether it is today and roughly when, or honestly that it is tomorrow, so you can make arrangements either way.

  3. Collected and brought to the workshop

To Boundary Road rather than to whichever garage has a space. That is what keeps it one conversation instead of three.

  4. Diagnosed, priced, repaired, returned

The fault is found and explained, you get a price before work starts, and the vehicle goes back to you. One team the whole way through.

Vehicle recovery St Helens · What we recover

Vehicle recovery St Helens: what we collect

Cars, vans, bikes and motorhomes.

Cars

The common one. Will not start, cut out on a journey, lost drive, or failed in a way that makes driving it unwise. Collected and brought back for diagnosis.

Vans and light commercials

Where time off the road is the real cost. Tell us if the van is how you earn and we will be straight about what we can do today. See fleet work.

Motorbikes

Bikes need securing differently to cars and are easy to damage in transit if they are strapped carelessly. We do motorbike work here, so the bike is going somewhere that understands it.

Motorhomes and larger vehicles

Size and weight change what can be sent, so ring and describe the vehicle rather than assuming. See motorhome repairs.

Non-runners and project vehicles

A vehicle that has stood for years and does not roll is a legitimate collection, not a nuisance. Say so on the phone and we will bring what is needed.

Recovery into repair

The reason most people ring us rather than a recovery-only operator: the vehicle arrives somewhere that can actually fix it. See car repairs.

Vehicle recovery St Helens · What it costs

What decides the cost of a recovery

Three things, and you will be told before we set off rather than after we arrive.

Distance. The obvious one. A collection from the next street and one from the far side of Greater Manchester are not the same job, and we will give you the figure for yours rather than a national average.

Whether it rolls and steers. A vehicle that can be winched and towed conventionally is straightforward. One that needs a flatbed and skates because it will not roll takes longer and needs different equipment.

Where it is sitting. A car on a driveway is simple. One in an underground car park with a height restriction, boxed in, or on soft ground is a different proposition. Tell us and we will bring the right thing first time.

Ring 01744 808586 with the location and we will give you a price and a realistic time. If the repair that follows is a big one, it can be spread with Payment Assist.

Stuck now?

Ring rather than message if the vehicle is somewhere unsafe. Tell us where you are, whether it rolls and what happened, and you will get a straight answer about what we can do and when. 01744 808586.

Vehicle recovery St Helens · Where we collect from

St Helens, Merseyside and the North West

St Helens, Rainhill, Prescot, Haydock, Newton-le-Willows, Billinge and Eccleston, out to Warrington, Widnes, Liverpool and across Merseyside. Further afield is usually possible — ring and tell us where the vehicle is and we will tell you honestly.

Vehicle recovery St Helens · Did you know

An automatic that will not start often cannot be towed conventionally

On many automatics the gearbox is only lubricated while the engine is running, so towing one with the driven wheels on the road can damage the transmission even over a short distance. The same applies to a lot of four-wheel-drive vehicles, where towing with only one axle lifted can wind up the drivetrain.

It is why we ask what the vehicle is as well as what is wrong with it. Getting that answer right on the phone is the difference between a recovery and a recovery plus a gearbox, and it is the single most useful thing a caller can tell us without being asked.

Not sure whether it needs recovering?

Sometimes it does not. Tell us what the vehicle is doing and we will tell you honestly whether it is safe to drive in, whether it wants collecting, or whether it is something we could sort where it stands.

Tell us where the vehicle is

Location first, then whether it rolls and steers, then what happened. If you are somewhere unsafe — a motorway, a fast road, a live lane — get behind a barrier and ring the police or Highways before you ring us.

We are Fastlane Autocare, 232–254 Boundary Road, St Helens, WA10 2PZ. Call 01744 808586 at any hour — outside workshop hours the line diverts so a recovery call still reaches somebody. The workshop is open Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 12:30pm, and that is when repairs are carried out.

Recovery leads straight into the workshop — diagnostics, repairs and MOT testing all under the same roof. More on our about us page.

Collection, diagnosis, repair and delivery handled by the same team rather than three separate businesses.

If you are not sure which of these applies to your vehicle, ring 01744 808586 and describe what you are seeing. We would rather spend two minutes on the phone than have you guess.

Vehicle recovery St Helens · FAQs

Everything people ask when they need recovering

Twenty questions, answered properly rather than in one line.

How much does vehicle recovery cost in St Helens?

It is decided by distance, whether the vehicle rolls and steers, and where it is sitting. You get told the figure before we set off rather than when we arrive.

A collection from the next street is not the same job as one from the far side of Greater Manchester. A vehicle that can be winched and towed conventionally is simpler than one needing a flatbed and skates because it will not roll. And a car in an underground car park with a height restriction is its own problem. Ring 01744 808586 with the location. If the repair afterwards is a large one it can be spread with Payment Assist.

Do you recover out of hours?

Yes. Ring the same number at any hour and the recovery line diverts outside workshop hours, so a breakdown at nine at night reaches somebody rather than an answerphone.

It is worth being clear about what happens next, because the two halves run to different clocks. The recovery itself is not limited to opening hours. The repair is, because that needs the workshop, the ramps and the parts counter. So a vehicle collected late in the evening is secured and looked at properly the next working day rather than at midnight. You will be told which of those you are dealing with when you ring, instead of finding out the following morning. Call 01744 808586 and tell us where the vehicle is.

What do you need to know when I ring?

Three things: where the vehicle is, whether it still rolls and steers, and what happened. Those decide what we send and how quickly.

Location matters most because somewhere unsafe changes the order of everything. Rolling and steering decides whether it can be towed conventionally or needs a flatbed. And what happened starts the diagnosis before the vehicle is even back — a car that would not start is a different fault to one that cut out at speed. Telling us the make and model helps too, particularly on automatics. Send the details if it is not urgent.

Do you recover motorbikes?

Yes, and the bike comes back to a workshop that works on motorbikes rather than to a general garage. Bikes need securing differently to cars and are easy to damage in transit if strapped carelessly.

That is the practical argument for using somewhere that handles bikes: the people loading it understand where the weight is and what will take a strap. Once it is back it can be diagnosed and repaired here as well as recovered. Tell us the bike when you ring, because size and weight change what we send. See motorbike repairs.

Can you recover a vehicle that will not roll?

Yes. A seized gearbox, a locked differential or steering damage all mean conventional towing is not an option, and that needs a flatbed and skates instead.

It is one of the most useful things to tell us on the phone, because turning up with the wrong equipment wastes your time and ours. Vehicles that have stood for years and have seized brakes fall into the same category. It is not a nuisance job and you will not get a sharp intake of breath for asking — just say so up front and we will bring what is needed — tell us the details.

Will you take my car to your workshop or somewhere else?

To our own workshop on Boundary Road. That is the whole point of using us rather than a recovery-only operator — the vehicle arrives somewhere that can actually diagnose and fix it.

It means one team, one explanation of what is wrong and one price, rather than chasing a recovery firm and a garage separately. If you would rather it went elsewhere we will take it there, but most people ring us precisely because they want the whole thing dealt with in one go. See car repairs for what happens next.

What should I do if I have broken down on a motorway?

Get yourself to safety first and ring the police or Highways before you ring anybody else. On a motorway that is not optional and it is not us being unhelpful.

Get out of the vehicle where it is safe to do so, behind the barrier, away from the carriageway, and away from the car rather than sitting in it. Once you are safe and the authorities are aware, ring us and we will sort the recovery. Live-lane and hard-shoulder situations are handled by the relevant authority first, always. Ring 01744 808586 once you are clear, or see what happens once it is back.

Do you recover vans and commercial vehicles?

Yes, and if the van is how you earn, say so when you ring. Time off the road is the real cost of a van breakdown and it changes how we prioritise the job.

Larger vans and anything heavily loaded change what can be sent, so describe the vehicle rather than just saying van. Once it is back, commercial work is handled the same way as any other — diagnosed, priced and repaired. If you run several vehicles, see commercial and fleet repairs for how we schedule around a working business.

Can you recover a motorhome?

Motorhomes can be recovered, but size and weight genuinely change what can be sent, so ring and describe the vehicle rather than assuming.

Length, height and weight all matter, and a large coachbuilt is a different proposition to a small campervan. Tell us the make, the rough length and whether it rolls, and we will tell you honestly whether it is something we can do or whether you need a specialist heavy recovery operator. We would rather say so than turn up unable to help. See motorhome repairs.

Can you collect a non-runner or project vehicle?

Yes, and it is a perfectly normal job. A car that has stood for years, does not start and has seized brakes needs a flatbed and skates, which is fine as long as we know in advance.

Tell us where it is sitting as well: a garage with a low door, soft ground, or a vehicle boxed in behind others all change what we bring. Project collections are often easier than roadside jobs because there is no urgency and we can plan them. Send us the details and a photo of where it is if you can.

How quickly can you get to me?

Ring at any hour and somebody will answer — outside workshop hours the recovery line diverts. Same day wherever we can, and you will be told honestly if it is not.

It depends on where you are and what the workshop is already doing, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. If it is today we will tell you roughly when; if it is tomorrow we will say that so you can make other arrangements rather than waiting by the road. Ring rather than message if the situation is urgent — 01744 808586 — or send the details if it can wait.

Is it cheaper than a national breakdown service?

It is a different thing rather than a cheaper version of the same thing. A breakdown policy is an annual subscription; this is a one-off recovery with the repair attached at the other end.

If you already have cover, use it — that is what you pay for. Where people ring us is when they have no cover, when the policy will recover the car but only to a garage of the insurer’s choosing, or when they want it brought somewhere that will actually fix it. You get the price up front either way. See what happens once it is back.

My car will not start. Does it definitely need recovering?

Not always, and it is worth a phone call before you assume. A flat battery on a driveway is sometimes sorted where it stands rather than recovered.

Describe what happens when you turn the key: nothing at all, a click, slow cranking, or it turns over but will not fire. Those point at different things and only some of them need the car moving. We will tell you honestly which one you have got rather than sending a truck by default. See battery replacement or ring 01744 808586.

Can you recover an automatic?

Yes, but it is important to tell us it is an automatic when you ring, because many of them cannot be towed conventionally without risking the gearbox.

On a lot of automatics the transmission is only lubricated while the engine is running, so towing with the driven wheels on the road can cause damage over even a short distance. Four-wheel-drive vehicles have a similar problem. Those go on a flatbed instead. Saying “it is an automatic” unprompted is genuinely one of the most useful things a caller can do. See diagnostics for what follows.

Do you recover after an incident on the road?

Where a vehicle is damaged and cannot be driven, it can be collected once the scene is clear and the authorities have finished. Safety and the police come first, always.

Ring once you are safe and we will tell you what we can do. If the vehicle is in a live lane or the road is closed, that is handled by the relevant authority before any recovery firm gets involved. Once it is back we can look at what it needs — see body and panel repair and welding.

How far will you travel?

Across St Helens, Merseyside and the wider North West as standard, and further is often possible depending on the day and the job.

Rather than guessing, ring and tell us where the vehicle is. If it is a long way and there is a closer sensible option we will say so rather than take a job that costs you more than it needs to. Plenty of people do choose to have a vehicle brought a distance specifically because they want it repaired here rather than locally. Tell us where you are.

Can you deliver the car back when it is fixed?

Yes. Collection, repair and delivery from one team is the point of doing it this way rather than dropping the vehicle at a garage and leaving you to sort the rest.

It matters most when you are without transport, because otherwise you have the problem of getting to the workshop to collect it. Say when you book the recovery that you will want it returning, and we will factor that in rather than treating it as an afterthought. See servicing if it is due anything else while it is with us.

What if the car is in an underground or multi-storey car park?

Height restrictions are the problem rather than the recovery itself, so tell us before we set off. A standard recovery truck will not fit under most barriers.

There are ways round it — moving the vehicle to an accessible level first, or bringing different equipment — but all of them depend on knowing in advance. The same applies to soft ground, tight alleys, and vehicles boxed in by others. A photo of where it is sitting answers more than a description does, so send one if you can. Message us.

Do you need the keys and the V5?

The keys, yes, wherever possible, because they make securing and moving the vehicle far easier. The V5 is not needed for a recovery.

If the keys are genuinely lost, say so when you ring rather than when we arrive, because a vehicle that cannot be unlocked or put into neutral changes the equipment needed. For anything where ownership might be questioned — a vehicle that is not yours, or one being collected on somebody else’s behalf — we will ask you to confirm you have the owner’s authority. Ask us if you are unsure.

Will my car be insured while you have it?

The vehicle is covered while it is being recovered and while it is with us at the workshop. That is a normal part of operating as a garage and a recovery service.

If you have specific questions about cover for a high-value or unusual vehicle, ask before we collect and we will give you a straight answer rather than a vague reassurance. It is a fair question and it is one people are often too polite to ask. More about the business is on our about us page.

What areas do you cover for vehicle recovery?

St Helens, Rainhill, Prescot, Haydock, Newton-le-Willows, Billinge and Eccleston, out to Warrington, Widnes, Liverpool and across Merseyside and the North West.

Because the vehicle comes back to Boundary Road, the practical question is usually how far you want it brought rather than where we will travel. If you are at the edge of that and wondering whether it is worth it, ring and describe the job — we will tell you honestly whether it makes sense or whether somewhere closer would serve you better. 01744 808586, or send the details over.
