Tyres St Helens: fitted the same day, priced before you arrive

Fastlane Autocare fits car tyres in St Helens from £69.95 fully fitted, including balancing, a new valve and disposal, with most sizes fitted the same day at 232-254 Boundary Road, WA10 2PZ. Send your tyre size or registration to 01744 808586 and get a set price on hassle-free same day tyre fitting in St Helens before you set off.

The cheapest tyre quote in St Helens is rarely the cheapest set of tyres. A budget tyre that stops a car length later on a wet road, wears out a year sooner and grows at the counter once the valve, the balancing and the disposal are added is not a saving. That is why every price we give is the fitted price, why the wheel alignment is checked free after every set, and why you are shown three tiers side by side instead of being steered to one. Mid-range and premium tyres bought here come with free puncture repairs for the life of the tyre, and any set can be spread over three, four or six months at 0% through Payment Assist with a soft search only.

We stock and fit Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone, Pirelli, Goodyear, Dunlop, Hankook, Uniroyal, Avon, Landsail and Davanti, alongside run-flat, 4x4, van, EV and performance tyres, on the same site as our DVSA MOT lane, so a tyre failure on the test is fixed here the same day rather than sent down the road. Ring 01744 808586, WhatsApp the size off your sidewall, or use the reg checker above, and a technician in the St Helens workshop picks it up.

Tyre law

1.6mm is the law. 3mm is the advice.

Below 1.6mm is an MOT fail, three points and up to £2,500. Per tyre. Wet braking falls away from about 3mm.

Free puncture repairs apply to mid-range and premium tyres bought and fitted at Boundary Road, where the puncture sits in the repairable area of the tread under BS AU 159. If you drive on the tyre flat and it is no longer repairable, that voids the free puncture repair offer.

The gap between cheap and good is measured in metres

The widest gap between a budget and a premium tyre is wet braking. From 50mph it can be several car lengths, and the wet grip letter on every new tyre's EU label, A down to E, is that gap printed on the tyre. Two grades apart is roughly a car length.

On a dry road in summer you will never notice the difference. On a wet roundabout in November you might notice it once, badly. The second gap is how long they last: a cheaper tyre often wears faster, so the saving shrinks every year you own the car, and over the life of a set the mid-range is frequently the cheapest option in actual pounds. Where budget genuinely makes sense, low annual mileage, a car you are selling soon, or a spare, we will say so rather than talk you up. We show you the label for your size before you commit. Ring 01744 808586 with your mileage and we will tell you which we would put on our own car.

Flat on the drive, or a slow puncture you would rather not risk? We come to you across St Helens and the surrounding towns. If the tyre can be saved we will repair it rather than sell you a new one — see puncture repairs. A new set is always worth pairing with four-wheel alignment, which is what stops them wearing out early.

It is moulded into the sidewall and you can read it standing next to the car. Take the most common size on the road, 205/55 R16 91V, and read it left to right:

55Profile %Sidewall height as a percentage of the width, so 55% of 205mm.
RRadialRadial construction. Almost every modern car tyre is.
16Rim inchesWheel diameter. This one must match your wheel exactly.
91Load indexHow much weight the tyre can carry.
VSpeed ratingV is 149mph. H is 130mph, W is 168mph.
  • XL — if you see it, the tyre is Extra Load, built with a reinforced casing for heavier cars.
  • DOT — four digits giving the week and year it was made. 2224 means week 22 of 2024.

Tyres St Helens · FAQs

Questions we get asked most

Every one of these is a question drivers actually type into Google. Answered properly, not in one line.

How much are tyres in St Helens?

Tyres in St Helens start at £69.95 fitted here, and every fitted price includes fitting, balancing, a new valve and disposal. The exact figure depends on the size your car takes and the tier you choose, so we quote against your registration: three prices, budget, mid-range and premium, and you pick the one that suits the car and the mileage.

What we will not do is quote a headline figure that grows at the counter. The number we give you on the phone is the number on the invoice.

Send the size off your sidewall, something like 205/55 R16 91V, with your reg. Ring 01744 808586, or spread it over three, four or six months at 0% with pay monthly tyres.

Can I get tyres fitted the same day?

Yes — same day tyre fitting is normal here rather than exceptional. Most common sizes are either in stock or with us within a couple of hours, so if you ring first thing you will usually have the car back the same day, alignment check included.

Unusual sizes take longer: a large alloy, a run-flat, or a van or 4x4 fitment may need ordering in. We will tell you honestly when you ring rather than after you have arrived and waited.

If the tyre is illegal or losing air, say so — we will get you in rather than book you for next week. See same day tyres St Helens.

Do you sell part worn tyres?

No, we do not sell part worn tyres and we would not fit one to your car. TyreSafe research found 94% of the part worns they inspected were being sold illegally, 63% were unsafe for road use, 22% were ten years old or more, and of fifty tyres they purchased exactly one was sold legally.

They are legal to sell in the UK, but only under conditions almost nobody meets: at least 2mm of tread with the original grooves visible, no bulges or exposed cords, a passed inflation test, and the words PART WORN permanently marked in letters at least 4mm high.

If a tyre you are offered is not stamped, it is being sold illegally. The honest alternative is a decent budget tyre with the cost spread — see pay monthly tyres.

What is the legal tyre tread depth in the UK?

The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tread, around the entire circumference. Below that is an MOT failure, three penalty points and a fine of up to £2,500 — and it applies per tyre, so a car on four illegal tyres means twelve points and your licence.

The practical advice differs from the legal figure. Wet braking performance drops away sharply below about 3mm, so most of the trade suggests changing there rather than running to the limit.

We check all four free as part of a tyre check, and there is more on checking tread depth yourself with a 20p piece.

Can my tyre be repaired instead of replaced?

Often yes. A puncture in the central three quarters of the tread, under 6mm across, can usually be repaired to British Standard BS AU 159, and that is always the first thing we check because it is a fraction of the cost of a new tyre.

What cannot be repaired safely by anyone: damage to the sidewall or shoulder, a cut larger than the limit, a second repair overlapping a first, or a tyre that has been driven on while flat — running flat wrecks the internal structure even when the outside looks fine.

On mid-range and premium tyres bought here, repairs are free for the life of the tyre. See puncture repair St Helens and when a puncture can be repaired.

Do I need a wheel alignment when I get new tyres?

You should at least have it checked, and we check it as part of the job. New tyres fitted to a car with the geometry out will wear an inside or outside edge away within months, which turns a set that should last three years into one you replace in one.

Kerbs, potholes and any suspension work knock alignment out, and the symptoms are easy to miss: a steering wheel slightly off-centre, or the car pulling gently to one side.

If it needs setting we tell you the cost before touching anything. See wheel alignment St Helens, or ring 01744 808586.

What do the numbers on my tyre mean?

A size like 205/55 R16 91V reads as: 205 is the tread width in millimetres, 55 is the sidewall height as a percentage of that width, R means radial, 16 is the wheel diameter in inches, 91 is the load index and V is the speed rating.

The last two matter more than people realise. Fitting a lower load index or speed rating than the manufacturer specified can invalidate your insurance, so they are not optional even when a cheaper tyre is available in the right size.

You may also see XL, meaning Extra Load, and a four digit date code such as 2224 for week 22 of 2024. The full breakdown is in the decoder near the top of this page.

Are budget tyres actually safe?

Budget tyres sold in the UK are safe in the sense that they are road legal and type approved — the question is not safety but margin. Independent testing consistently shows the widest gap against premium tyres is wet braking, and from 50mph that can be several car lengths.

They also tend to wear faster, so the saving narrows over the life of the set and sometimes disappears entirely.

Where budget genuinely makes sense: low annual mileage, a car you are selling soon, or a spare. We will tell you which we would fit to our own car. Compare budget and premium tyres.

How often should tyres be replaced?

There is no fixed mileage — tyres are replaced on tread depth, on damage, or on age, whichever arrives first. Most cars need fronts every two to three years and rears rather less, but a heavy right foot or a lot of motorway miles changes that considerably.

Age is the one people forget. Rubber hardens whether the car is driven or not, so a caravan, motorhome or low-mileage second car can reach ten years with plenty of tread and still need replacing.

Check the four digit date code on the sidewall. More on how old tyres can be, or book a free tyre check.

Do I have to replace all four tyres at once?

No, you do not have to replace all four tyres at once — you replace what needs replacing. Tyres should be changed in pairs across an axle wherever possible though, so both fronts or both rears together, matched in make, size and tread pattern, because mismatched grip across an axle affects braking and stability.

Mixing different tyres across an axle gives the two wheels different grip levels, which affects braking and stability, and on a four-wheel-drive car mismatched rolling radius can damage the transmission.

If money is tight, two good tyres on one axle beats four mediocre ones. Say so when you ring and we will work out the sensible order — or spread all four with pay monthly tyres.

Should new tyres go on the front or the back?

New tyres go on the rear axle, even on a front-wheel-drive car. It is counterintuitive and it is the industry standard: if the rear loses grip first the car oversteers, which most drivers cannot correct, whereas understeer from worn fronts is far more predictable and easier to recover from.

Understeer from worn fronts is more predictable and easier to recover from. So when we fit two, the new pair goes on the back and the better existing pair moves forward.

Some drivers push back on this because the fronts wear faster on a front-wheel-drive car. The answer is that they do — and you rotate them rather than putting the new pair there. Ring 01744 808586 if you want it explained on your car.

Do you fit tyres for vans, 4x4s and EVs?

Yes. We fit tyres for vans, 4x4s, electric vehicles, caravans and motorhomes, and each carries a specific requirement a general fitter sometimes misses — the correct load index on a van, an EV-rated tyre on an electric car, and replacement on age rather than tread for caravans and motorhomes.

Vans need the correct load index for the weight they carry. EVs are heavier and deliver torque instantly, so they wear tyres faster and often specify a reinforced or EV-rated tyre with lower rolling resistance and noise. Caravans and motorhomes are usually replaced on age rather than tread.

See van tyres, 4x4 tyres, EV tyres or caravan and motorhome tyres.

Can I buy tyres online and bring them to you?

Yes, we will fit customer-supplied tyres and will quote you for fitting them. It is worth comparing that against our own supplied-and-fitted price first, because ours already includes mounting, balancing, a new valve and disposal.

Once those are added separately the difference is often only a few pounds, and occasionally it goes the other way.

The other consideration is afterwards: free puncture repairs for life apply to mid-range and premium tyres bought and fitted here, and a tyre supplied elsewhere is a warranty conversation with whoever sold it. Send your size to 01744 808586 and compare properly.

Do you do mobile tyre fitting?

Mobile tyre fitting is run by our sister business, Fastlane Autocare mobile, which comes to you at home or at work across St Helens and the North West. The garage here on Boundary Road handles anything needing a ramp, an alignment rig or an MOT lane.

Which you want usually comes down to whether the car is driveable. A flat on the drive is a job for the mobile team; a full set, an alignment, or tyres alongside an MOT is better done here.

Ring 01744 808586 and we will point you at whichever genuinely suits, including when that is not us.
