TYRES CLOCK FACE • FROM £69.95 FITTED • MOT LANE AND ALIGNMENT RIG ON SITE

Flat or illegal? Tyres Clock Face fitted today, from £69.95

Ten minutes up Clock Face Road and across to Boundary Road. Tyres from £69.95 fitted, balanced, new valve, old one taken away, and the four-wheel alignment checked free afterwards.

The reason people come from Clock Face rather than stopping at a fitting bay is that everything is under one roof. If the tyre was flagged on an MOT, the test, the tyre and the free retest all happen here rather than across two places and two trips.

Tyres Clock Face: where to go and what it costs

Drivers in Clock Face get tyres fitted at Fastlane Autocare, 232-254 Boundary Road, St Helens WA10 2PZ, about ten minutes away via Clock Face Road and Sutton Road. Tyres start at £69.95 fitted, with balancing, a new valve and disposal all included, with a DVSA MOT lane and a four-wheel laser alignment rig on the same site. Ring 01744 808586 with your registration.

Clock Face sits at the southern edge of St Helens, which means most of the quick options are fitting bays rather than workshops. That is fine when all you need is a tyre. It stops being fine the moment the tyre is a symptom of something else — a shoulder worn away by the geometry, a slow leak that turns out to be a corroded rim, or an advisory on an MOT sheet that needs the car testing again afterwards.

The practical difference is the number of trips. A tyre fitted somewhere that cannot test or align the car frequently becomes two more visits, and on a car that failed its MOT on tyres it becomes a retest booked somewhere else entirely. Everything here happens in one building. Ring 01744 808586 with your registration and we will price the tyres and tell you honestly whether anything else is worth doing while it is in.

What Clock Face brings us

Three jobs that make up most of the work from this side of town.

Alloy wheel and tyre checked for kerb and pothole damage, Clock Face customer

Potholes off Gorsey Lane

A hard knock splits a sidewall, buckles a rim or moves the toe on that corner. All three show up on the rig, and only one of them is a tyre.

Slow punctures that keep coming back

Off the rim and into the water tank. Roughly half turn out to be a corroded rim seat or a perished valve rather than a puncture at all.

Getting here

The run from Clock Face to Boundary Road

The straightforward route is up Clock Face Road, onto Sutton Road and through towards the town, then out to Boundary Road on the western side. It is a ten minute run outside the peaks and it is the way most people come.

Between about half eight and nine, and again at three, Sutton Road and the approach to the town centre are worth avoiding. Coming round via Lea Green and the A570 is often quicker even though it looks further on a map, and if you are coming from the Bold Heath or Gorsey Lane side that route is the natural one anyway.

There is parking on site and a waiting area. A common car size fitted while you wait is usually inside the hour including the free geometry check, so most people from this side of town wait rather than arranging a lift.

Saturday morning is the busiest half-day of the week. We are open 9 till 12:30 on a Saturday and closed on Sunday. If your job is not urgent, a weekday afternoon is a much shorter wait, and ringing first tells you which you are walking into.

If the car genuinely cannot be driven, we will come to it instead — see mobile tyre fitting in St Helens. For anything driveable, the workshop is quicker and includes the alignment check.

The villages on this side, and what they tend to need

Clock Face, Sutton Manor, Bold Heath, Lea Green, Gorsey Lane and Sutton Leach all sit within a few minutes of each other on the southern edge of St Helens, and between them they send us a steady mix of everyday car tyres, pothole damage off the older lanes, and van work from the units around Lea Green and the A570 corridor.

The road surfaces on the older residential streets around Clock Face and Sutton Manor are the reason so much of the work from here is damage rather than wear. A kerb strike or a deep pothole does three things at once: it can split a sidewall, it can buckle the rim, and it can move the toe on that corner. Only the first is visible, which is why anything that felt like a real bang is worth putting on the rig even if the tyre looks fine.

Lea Green and the units off the A570 bring the van side. Load rating matters more on those than most drivers realise, because a van running close to its plated weight on an underrated tyre is both unsafe and an MOT failure, and it wears the shoulders out remarkably quickly.

Wherever you are on this side, the free tyre check is worth using. Tread on all four, pressures, age off the sidewall date code and a look at the wear pattern, while you wait. See the free tyre check or ring 01744 808586.

The age check is the one most people have never had done. The four-digit code on the sidewall gives the week and year of manufacture, and rubber hardens with age regardless of how much tread is left on it.

Work out the monthly figure

A full set in one go is an awkward week. It can go over three, four or six months at nought per cent, and up to £1,000 it is a soft search that leaves no mark. See pay monthly tyres.

Worth knowing

The three tiers, and which one we would actually put on your car

Budget makes sense in three specific situations and we will say so when you are in one of them: low annual mileage, a car you are selling within the year, or a tyre that just has to be legal on a vehicle that barely moves. Names like Avon, Landsail and Davanti. The compromise is real and it is mostly in the wet.

Mid-range is the right answer for most people doing normal miles. Dunlop, Goodyear, Hankook, Uniroyal. It usually lasts long enough to be the cheapest set in actual pounds over its life, and it comes with free puncture repairs for as long as the tyre stays on the car.

Premium earns its money on high mileage and heavier, faster cars. Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone, Pirelli. The shortest wet stopping distances you can buy, and on a car doing twenty thousand miles a year the extra life often closes most of the price gap on its own.

The number that decides it is the wet grip letter on the EU label, A down to E, and it is printed on every new tyre. Two grades apart is roughly a car length in an emergency stop from 50mph. We show you the label for your exact size before you commit, because grades move with size and the same model can be an A in one fitment and a B in another.

See the full range on tyre brands, or ring 01744 808586 and tell us your mileage.

Tyres Clock Face · FAQs

What people from this side of town ask

Local questions with local answers, plus the ones everybody asks about tyres.

Where is the nearest garage to Clock Face for tyres?

Fastlane Autocare at 232-254 Boundary Road, St Helens WA10 2PZ is about ten minutes from Clock Face via Clock Face Road and Sutton Road. Tyres start at £69.95 fitted, and unlike a fitting bay there is a DVSA MOT lane, a four-wheel laser alignment rig and brake rollers on the same site.

That matters when the tyre turns out to be a symptom rather than the problem, which on the roads round here it often is.

We are open Monday to Friday 8:30 till 5 and Saturday 9 till 12:30, and closed Sunday.

There is parking on site and a waiting area, so from this side of town most people wait for the car rather than arranging a lift both ways.

Ring 01744 808586 with your registration, or see the full range at tyres in St Helens.

How much are tyres fitted in Clock Face?

Tyres start at £69.95 fitted for common car sizes, and that covers the tyre, fitting, balancing, a new valve and disposal. None of those four appears as a separate charge at the counter, which is where a cheap headline price usually grows.

Larger alloys, run-flats and reinforced van tyres cost more, and you get the exact figure for your car before anything is ordered.

We quote against your registration rather than the model name, because two versions of the same car often take different sizes.

Mid-range and premium tyres bought here also carry free puncture repairs for the life of the tyre, which is worth factoring in before comparing a budget price against a mid-range one.

A full set can go over three, four or six months at nought per cent. See pay monthly tyres.

I hit a pothole. Is the tyre the only thing to check?

No, and it is the single most useful thing to know if you drive the older lanes round Clock Face and Sutton Manor. A hard pothole strike does three things at once: it can split or bulge the sidewall, it can buckle the rim, and it can move the toe on that corner.

Only the first of those is visible from outside. A buckled rim shows up as a vibration or a slow leak weeks later, and a toe fault shows up as a scrubbed shoulder a few thousand miles later.

A bulge in a sidewall means the internal cords have snapped and the tyre is finished, whatever the tread looks like.

Get it on the rig. The check is free — see wheel alignment or ring 01744 808586.

Can you fit tyres while I wait?

Most common car sizes are on the rack and are fitted while you wait, and that is usually inside the hour including the free four-wheel alignment check afterwards. There is parking on site and a waiting area, so from Clock Face most people wait for the car rather than arranging a lift both ways.

Larger alloys, run-flats and some van sizes may need ordering in, which can make it a next-day job.

Ring with your registration before you set off and we will tell you which yours is and how busy the bays are.

Ringing first is the single thing that decides whether waiting is ten minutes or an hour, because it tells you what is already in the bays before you set off.

Call 01744 808586 and we will hold you a slot.

Are you open on Saturday and Sunday?

We are open Saturday 9 till 12:30 and closed on Sunday. Monday to Friday is 8:30 till 5. Saturday morning is by a distance the busiest half-day of the week, so if the job is not urgent a weekday afternoon is a much shorter wait.

It is worth saying the Sunday part plainly rather than letting you drive over and find out, because a weekend is exactly when people discover they need a tyre.

If something happens on a Sunday, ring first thing Monday and we will get you in that day wherever we can.

Bank holidays follow the Saturday pattern where we open at all, and the dates go up in the window and on the phone message rather than leaving you guessing.

Call 01744 808586 or send your registration to hold a slot.

Do you do puncture repairs or just replacements?

We repair first and replace only when a repair is not legally safe. Every tyre comes off the rim and is inspected from the inside before anybody gives you an answer, because on a tyre the damage you can see is very often not the damage that actually decides it.

A puncture is repairable when it sits in the central three quarters of the tread, is no more than 6mm across, and the casing is undamaged. Sidewall and shoulder damage never is.

Roughly half the slow leaks we chase turn out to be a corroded rim seat or a perished valve rather than a puncture at all, and those are fixed without a new tyre.

A repair done properly is permanent. The plug and patch goes in from the inside, seals the hole and the innerliner together, and the tyre goes back to full service rather than becoming a get-you-home.

See puncture repair in Clock Face, or ring 01744 808586.

My car failed its MOT on tyres. Can you sort it all here?

Yes, and this is the main reason people come here from Clock Face rather than to a fitting bay. The test, the tyres and the retest all happen on the same site, so it does not turn into two appointments at two places with the car sitting illegal in between.

Bring the certificate with you. We will measure all four, tell you which are genuinely at the limit and which were advisories, and fit what is needed.

The retest is free, which is worth knowing before you book the work somewhere that cannot test it.

Booking the test and the tyres together also means we measure all four before the test rather than after, so nothing fails on something we could have told you about first.

See MOT in St Helens, or ring 01744 808586.

What is the legal tread depth and when should I actually replace?

The legal minimum in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tread and around the entire circumference, and below that it is an MOT failure, three penalty points and a fine of up to £2,500 per tyre. That is the legal answer.

The practical answer is different. Wet grip starts falling away noticeably from around 3mm, so a tyre at 2mm is legal and already a long way past its best in a Merseyside winter.

There is an easy check at home: a 20p coin in the main groove. If you can see the outer band of the coin, the tread is getting low and it is worth having measured properly.

Uneven wear is judged separately from depth. A tyre worn away on one shoulder can still pass on tread and still be close to the cord, because the rule only covers the central three quarters.

The free tyre check measures all four while you wait. Ring 01744 808586.

Will you come out to me if the car is flat on the drive?

We do fit at the address the car is parked at across St Helens, and that is the right answer when the car genuinely should not be moved — a wheel sitting on the rim, or a sidewall cut open on a kerb.

If the tyre is soft but holding air, pump it up and drive it in. A short run at proper pressure does no harm, and the workshop is quicker and includes the free alignment check.

What you should not do is drive it flat. That crushes the casing between the rim and the road and turns a repairable puncture into a new tyre within a few hundred yards.

A space saver is fine to get here at 50mph and not for long, and using it is often quicker and cheaper than waiting for a call-out slot.

Ring 01744 808586 and describe it, or see mobile tyre fitting.

Do I need all four tyres doing at once?

Not necessarily, but replace in pairs across an axle as a minimum. A big difference in tread depth between the two sides of the same axle changes how the car behaves in the wet, and it shows up first under braking.

If you are only buying two, the new pair belongs on the rear axle. A car that loses grip at the back in the wet is much harder to correct than one that pushes wide at the front, and most people assume the opposite.

Where all four are down, doing them in one visit is usually cheaper than two, because you pay one lot of fitting time.

Where the new pair goes matters more than which pair you buy. We move the better existing tyres to the front and put the new ones on the back as a matter of course.

If cost is the reason for splitting it, spreading the full set is the better answer. See pay monthly tyres.

Do you fit van tyres for the units around Lea Green?

Van, pickup and 4x4 tyres are fitted here as a matter of course, and the units around Lea Green and the A570 corridor are regular customers of ours. Commercial sizes are held in stock rather than treated as a special order, because a van standing still is a day of work lost.

Load index is the number that matters most. A van tyre has to meet or beat the rating on the vehicle plate, and fitting a car-rated tyre because it is the same physical size is unsafe and an MOT failure.

Vans also run higher pressures than cars, and running them at car pressures wears both shoulders while the middle looks perfectly healthy.

Reinforced and Extra Load casings are stiffer, so damage from being run soft happens faster on a van than most drivers expect, and it is often already done by the time the warning shows.

See van tyres or ring 01744 808586 with the registration.

How do I know how old my tyres are?

There is a four-digit DOT code moulded into the sidewall giving the week and the year the tyre was made, so 3222 means week 32 of 2022. It is worth finding, because tread depth tells you nothing at all about age.

Most manufacturers suggest inspecting annually from about five years old and replacing at around ten regardless of how much tread is left.

This catches out low-mileage cars in particular. A car doing three thousand miles a year can easily reach ten years with most of the original tread still on it and rubber that has hardened badly.

Storage is the other half of it. Rubber ages faster in daylight, in heat, or anywhere near something with an electric motor, which is why a spare in a sunny garage is often the oldest tyre on the car.

We read the codes as part of the free tyre check. Ring 01744 808586.

Why does my steering wheel sit crooked after new tyres?

New tyres do not move a steering wheel, so if it was straight before and crooked afterwards, something was disturbed during the work, and if it was crooked before then the tyres simply were not the cause. Either way it is geometry rather than rubber.

The usual explanation is that only the front toe was ever set. If the rear axle is pointing slightly off, the front has to be set to match it for the car to travel straight, and the wheel follows the front.

That is why the rear reading matters even on cars where the rear cannot be adjusted.

Worn steering joints can produce the same symptom, so the components get checked before anything is adjusted. There is no sense setting an angle on a track rod end with play in it.

Bring it in and we will read all four for free and show you the printout. See wheel alignment.

Can I book online or do I have to ring?

You can book online, ring, or send your registration through on WhatsApp, and for tyres specifically the registration is the most useful thing you can send because it lets us check your exact size against the rack before you travel.

Ringing has one advantage: we can tell you how busy the bays are right now, which decides whether waiting is ten minutes or an hour.

For anything urgent — a tyre that is illegal or losing air — ring rather than book, and we will make room.

Whichever way you book, have the registration to hand. It is the one thing that turns an estimate into a firm price and a guess at stock into a straight yes or no.
