Your set is cleaned, checked and labelled to your vehicle, then stored under cover, away from damp, direct sunlight and anything that could damage the rubber. Storing tyres in the right conditions stops them cracking, perishing or flat-spotting, which is exactly what can happen to a set left in a cold, damp garage all season.

Keeping them properly means your spare set gives you its full life when it goes back on, rather than ageing before its time in poor storage.

A tyre hotel works best when your seasonal set is on its own wheels, because changeover is then quick, just swap one full set for the other, balance and torque up. Many winter-tyre users buy a second set of wheels for exactly this reason.

As a rough guide, winter tyres are worth fitting when temperatures start dropping towards 7°C, which around here usually means from about October, and swapping back in spring when it's reliably milder, often around Easter. These are guides, not fixed dates, the weather decides in the end.

The best advice is not to leave it until the first hard frost, when everyone books at once. Get your changeover in early and your seasonal set is on and ready before you need it.

Yes. Each changeover is a natural point to look over both sets, and it's the perfect moment for a proper free tyre check. We look at tread depth, overall condition, any damage and the age of the tyres, so you always know where you stand.

Tyres age with time as well as mileage, so if a stored set is getting old enough to think about replacing, we'll tell you honestly and in good time, never as a last-minute surprise.

If a tyre is worn, damaged or too old to safely go back on, we'll flag it before you drive away and, if you're happy, our tyre fitting team can sort a fresh one there and then, so you don't need a second trip. We only ever recommend replacement when a tyre genuinely needs it.

Once temperatures regularly drop below around 7°C, winter tyres use a softer compound and deeper tread pattern that grip noticeably better in cold, wet and icy conditions than summer tyres. For a lot of drivers that added safety through the winter is well worth it.
