Yes, a towbar needs electrics so your trailer or caravan's lights and functions work with the car. Without wiring, the bar can hold a load but nothing electrical on what you're towing will operate, which isn't legal on the road.

We fit the correct electrics as part of the job, either 7-pin or 13-pin depending on what you're towing, and wire them in properly for your specific vehicle.

7-pin wiring covers the basic road lighting, indicators, brake lights and tail lights, which is enough for a simple trailer or a bike rack with a light board. 13-pin wiring does all of that plus the extra functions a caravan needs, like powering the fridge, charging the leisure battery, and running reversing and fog lights.

Every vehicle has a maximum towing weight and a noseweight limit, which you'll find on the VIN plate or in the handbook. Towing beyond those figures is unsafe and illegal, so it's important to stay within them, and to load your trailer or caravan correctly.

We'll check your car's limits when we fit the towbar and make sure your setup is within them. Separately, what your driving licence entitles you to tow is worth confirming, as the rules changed in late 2021 and most car licences now allow heavier trailers.

It can, on cars with rear parking sensors, a fixed towball can sit within the sensors' range and trigger them when parking without a trailer. It's a common concern and there are good solutions.

A detachable or swan neck towbar lets you remove the ball when you're not towing, so the sensors work as normal. Where a fixed bar is used, the electrics can often be set up to manage the sensors. We'll recommend the best approach for your car.

It depends on the vehicle and the electrics involved, but towbar fitting is typically a job of a few hours. Dedicated vehicle-specific wiring can take a little longer than a basic setup, because it's integrated properly with the car's systems.
