MOT St Helens
Need an MOT soon?
If your vehicle is licensed by St Helens Borough Council, the MOT must be done at an approved station inside the borough. The council states plainly that it cannot accept a certificate from a station outside St Helens. Fastlane Autocare is at 232-254 Boundary Road, St Helens WA10 2PZ, inside the borough, with Class 4 taxi and private hire MOTs from £40 booked online against the £54.85 the council’s own depot charges. Fail here and we repair it on site and retest it free, so the vehicle is off the road for hours instead of days. Open Monday to Friday 8:30am–5pm and Saturday 9am–12:30pm. Call 01744 808586, WhatsApp your registration, or book your taxi MOT online.
Where you live makes no difference. The borough on your plate does. We regularly test for drivers living in Wigan, Warrington and Widnes who hold a St Helens licence, because it is the licensing authority that decides where the MOT must be done — not where the car is parked overnight.
Off the road for hours, not daysThe council’s Hardshaw Brook Depot is deliberately independent — they do not carry out repairs. A fail there means taking the vehicle away, finding a garage and coming back. Here the workshop is the same building, so brakes, tyres and suspension are done on the spot and the retest is free.
Mind the 28 daysThe certificate must be no more than 28 days old when the council issues or renews the licence. An MOT done too early is no use for the application even though it still runs twelve months. Tell us your licence date and we will time the test to it. Call 01744 808586.

St Helens: the dates and numbers that matter
The rules people most often get wrong — when it’s due, how early you can book without losing time, and how long you’ve got to come back after a fail. It is all part of the MOT St Helens service we run every day.
MOT St Helens · What an MOT checks
MOT St Helens: a safety test, not a service
The MOT checks your car meets road safety and environmental standards on the day. It doesn’t tell you the engine is healthy — plenty of cars pass and still need work. Our MOT St Helens testers will talk you through anything you are unsure of.
Tyres & wheels
1.6mm at the worst point, sidewalls, and the correct load rating for a fully laden vehicle.
Brakes
Force at every wheel and balance across each axle — the first thing to go on a working taxi.
Lights & signals
The most common failure of all, and on this mileage the one that recurs.
Suspension & steering
Springs, bushes and joints — kerbing at ranks and pick-up points does the damage.

MOT St Helens: keep the MOT tester happy — six things to check
Five minutes on your driveway turns a lot of fails into passes. These are the items we see most often, and every one of them is free to check yourself. Ask the MOT St Helens team when you drop the car off.
-
Every bulb, front and back
Every lamp front and back including the plate light. On a vehicle doing this mileage bulbs go far more often than on a private car. Read more
-
Tread and tyre pressure
1.6mm at the worst point. Check monthly rather than annually — a taxi can go through a set between MOTs. Read more
-
Wipers and screenwash
Torn or smearing blades fail, and an empty washer bottle fails on the spot. Both cost pennies to put right beforehand. Read more
-
Brakes and handbrake
Rear brakes wear faster than fronts on a loaded vehicle. Listen for grinding and check the handbrake holds on a slope. Read more

Warning lights on the dash
Airbag, ABS, engine management, brake fluid, tyre pressure — all testable, all an automatic fail while lit. Read more

Plates, mirrors and belts

What we replace on working vehicles
Brakes and tyres first and by a distance, then suspension from kerbing at ranks, then bulbs.
None of it is unusual work. What matters on a licensed vehicle is how fast it happens — the parts are common, we hold the usual sizes, and the car goes back through the test the same visit.
If it is a warning light rather than a component we read the codes before quoting. See diagnostics or call 01744 808586.
The MOT itself is the same test as any car
Worth being clear about, because drivers often expect a taxi MOT to be something separate. It is a standard Class 4 test against the same published standard. What differs is everything around it — where it must be done, when, and what the council does afterwards.
On the testBrakes and their balance on the rollers, tyres and tread, steering and suspension, all lights and their aim, mirrors, wipers and washers, the windscreen, seat belts, the horn, plates, exhaust and emissions, and the structure for corrosion.
Not on the testPlate brackets, signage, seat condition to licensing standard, meters and the vehicle specification the council sets. That is the compliance inspection, and the council does it at the Town Hall.
What differs in practiceNothing in the test itself — but a working vehicle arrives with three times the wear, so the same test finds considerably more.

Getting the order right: MOT, then compliance, then plate
Licensing a vehicle in St Helens is a sequence, and doing it out of order costs you time you cannot bill for. The MOT is only the first step.
1. The MOT, inside the borough. A DVSA-approved station physically in St Helens. A certificate from a station outside the borough will not be accepted for licensing, however valid the MOT itself is.
2. Inside the 28-day window. The certificate must be no more than 28 days old when the council issues the new licence or renews the existing one. Test too early and you pay for it twice.
3. Application and paperwork. The MOT certificate goes in with the licensing application to the council.
4. Compliance inspection at the Town Hall. Separate from the MOT and carried out by the council, not by us. It covers the licensing side of the vehicle — seat condition, plate brackets, plates displayed in the right positions, and the specification the council requires.
The practical upshot is that the MOT wants scheduling backwards from your licence date, not forwards from whenever the car is free. Tell us when the licence is due and we will fit the test into the window. Requirements change, so confirm the current position with taxi licensing before you commit.
Call 01744 808586 and we will work the dates out with you.
Why taxis fail on brakes and tyres before anything else
A licensed vehicle covers a private car’s annual mileage in a few months, and almost all of it is the worst kind — stop, start, loaded, town centre.
Brakes take it hardest. Discs and pads on a working taxi wear at a rate that surprises owners who have only ever run private cars, and the rear brakes go faster than the fronts because the vehicle is rarely empty.
Tyres are the other one. The limit is 1.6mm across the centre three-quarters of the tread, all the way round, taken at the worst point — and on a car doing that mileage the worst point moves quickly. Kerbing at ranks and pick-up points knocks the tracking out, and then one shoulder disappears while the rest still looks respectable.
Worth doing monthly, not annually: 20p in the groove at the inner edge, middle and outer edge of all four. On a taxi that check is worth more than on any private car, because you will go through a set between MOTs.
We fit tyres and do brake work on site, so a fail on either is fixed the same visit. Call 01744 808586.

If it is urgent, ring rather than book online. The website shows standard slots; the phone gets you what is genuinely free today, and drivers working nights usually take the first slot of the morning so the vehicle is back before the evening. Taxi MOT St Helens · Where our drivers come from
It is your plate that decides, not your postcode
Drivers come to us from Wigan, Warrington, Widnes, Haydock and Newton-le-Willows — not because we are close to them, but because they hold a St Helens licence and the MOT has to be done inside the borough.
It catches people out. A driver living five minutes from a garage in Wigan still has to make the trip into St Helens for a certificate the council will accept, and finding that out on the day the licence expires is an expensive way to learn it.
If you are unsure whether a garage qualifies, check the postcode is a St Helens one before you book — ours is WA10 2PZ. Call 01744 808586.

MOT St Helens · Did you know
Test too early and the certificate is no use to the council
For a private car, testing early is free breathing room. For a licensed vehicle it is the opposite: the certificate must be no more than 28 days old when the council issues or renews the licence, so an MOT done two months ahead has to be done again.

MOT St Helens · FAQs
MOT St Helens: questions drivers ask
Yes — for licensing purposes St Helens Borough Council will not accept an MOT certificate from a test station outside the borough. It has to be a DVSA-approved station physically inside St Helens.
That rules out a lot of the garages a driver might otherwise use, including branches of the bigger chains sitting just over the boundary in Prescot, Widnes or Wigan. It also means where you live is irrelevant — we regularly test vehicles for drivers who live in Wigan and Warrington but hold a St Helens licence, because the borough their plate comes from is what decides it, not the borough they park in.
The council’s own wording is unambiguous: “We will be unable to accept an MOT certificate from an MOT station which is situated outside of the borough of St Helens.” They name two routes — any VOSA-approved station inside the borough, or their own Hardshaw Brook Depot.
We are at 232-254 Boundary Road, St Helens WA10 2PZ — inside the borough and DVSA-approved. Licensing conditions do get revised, so check the council’s vehicle pages if you are applying for the first time. Call 01744 808586.
No more than 28 days old at the point the council issues the vehicle licence. Their words: “Your MOT certificate can be no older than 28 days at the point we come to issue your vehicle licence.” An MOT done too early is no use for the application even though the certificate itself still runs twelve months.
So the order matters. Time the test to land inside that window rather than getting it out of the way months ahead.
Tell us when your licence is due and we will book the test to suit it. Call 01744 808586.
From £40 with us for a Class 4 vehicle when you book online, against the £54.85 the council’s own depot charges. That is the full DVSA maximum, so you are £14.85 better off before any repair work is even discussed.
Most licensed saloons and estates are Class 4. Larger eight-seat vehicles fall into a different class — ring us with the vehicle and we will tell you which applies before you book.
Book online or call 01744 808586.
Yes — Hardshaw Brook Depot is an option, and it is deliberately independent because they do not carry out repairs. They also offer a free retest.
The trade-off is what happens when it fails. With no workshop on site you take the vehicle away, find a garage, get the work done and come back — and every one of those steps is a day the car is not earning.
Here the test lane and the workshop are the same building, so the repair happens immediately and the retest is still free. Call 01744 808586.
We repair it here and retest it free, so the vehicle is off the road for hours rather than days. That is the entire argument for testing where the spanners are when the car is your income.
If the failure is marked dangerous the vehicle cannot legally be driven at all — not to another garage, not home. At a test-only station that becomes a recovery problem. Here it is just the next job.
See failed MOT repairs or call 01744 808586.
No — they are two separate things and the council does the compliance inspection itself, at St Helens Town Hall. We carry out the MOT; we do not and cannot do the compliance check.
Compliance covers the licensing side: seat condition, plate brackets, plates displayed in the correct positions, signage and the vehicle specification the council requires.
Get the MOT sorted first, inside the 28-day window, then present the vehicle for compliance. Call 01744 808586 if you want the timing worked out.
More often than a private car, and how much more depends on the licensing authority rather than on national law. Nationally a hackney carriage is generally expected to be tested from a year after first registration and annually after that, while a private hire car follows the usual three-year rule.
On top of that, many authorities inspect more frequently once a vehicle passes a certain age — six-monthly is common — and St Helens can require an inspection at any reasonable time while the licence is in force. Because it varies by authority, check your own licence conditions rather than a general figure.
We will keep your MOT date on file and remind you before it falls due. Call 01744 808586.
Yes — both are ordinary Class 4 MOTs as far as the test itself goes. The difference between hackney and private hire is a licensing distinction, not a testing one.
What differs is the paperwork around it and the compliance inspection the council runs afterwards.
Bring either. Call 01744 808586 and we will book you in.
Ring us rather than book online if it is urgent. Online booking shows the standard slots; the phone gets you what is actually free today, which is usually more than the website suggests.
Drivers working nights often take the first slot of the morning so the vehicle is back before the evening shift. Say what you need and we will work round it.
Call 01744 808586.
Yes — and on a working vehicle it is worth doing. A pre-MOT check finds the failures while you can still choose when to lose the car, rather than on the morning the licence renewal is due.
Brakes, tyres, suspension and lights take the most punishment on a taxi, simply because of the mileage and the stop-start work.
See pre-MOT checks or call 01744 808586.
Brakes and tyres, by a distance — they do the mileage of three private cars and most of it is stop-start. Suspension comes next, then lights.
Rear discs and pads wear faster than owners expect on a vehicle that is constantly loaded and braking. Tyres wear unevenly if the tracking has taken a knock on a kerb.
All of it is repaired here with a free retest. See brake repairs or tyres, or call 01744 808586.
Yes — the test takes about an hour and there is a comfortable reception with tea, coffee and a vending machine. Most drivers wait rather than lose a second trip to the garage.
If it needs work we tell you the cost and the time before anything starts, so you can decide whether to wait or come back.
Tell us when you book. Call 01744 808586.
Yes, and on a working vehicle it is much the most sensible way to do it — one period off the road covering the test and the service, instead of losing the car twice in a fortnight.
A taxi covers a private car’s annual mileage in a few months, so service intervals come round far faster than the MOT does.
Send the registration and we will price the pair. Call 01744 808586 or book online.
Only if the existing certificate is still in date and nothing was recorded as dangerous. A dangerous defect means the vehicle does not move, and for a licensed vehicle it also means it must not be worked.
No valid MOT is a fine of up to £1,000. Driving in a dangerous condition is up to £2,500 with three points, and for a licensed driver there is the licence itself to think about.
Fail here and it does not arise. See failed MOT — can I drive? or call 01744 808586.
232-254 Boundary Road, St Helens WA10 2PZ — inside the borough, DVSA-approved, with parking on site. That postcode is the bit that matters for licensing, and it is worth checking on any garage you are quoted by.
We are on the edge of the town centre rather than out on an industrial estate, so if you do leave the vehicle you are not stranded.
Call 01744 808586 or send the registration on WhatsApp for the next free slot.
