Getting to your test
If your MOT is still in date, drive as normal. If it has expired, the law only lets you drive to a test you've already booked (or to and from a garage for repairs) — and the car must still be roadworthy. That's the biggest reason to book a same-day slot rather than risk it.

Reading your result
A fail lists faults as dangerous, major or minor. Dangerous or major faults mean a fail; a dangerous fault means the car must not be driven at all until fixed. Minor faults and advisories don't fail the car but flag things to keep an eye on.
If the old certificate hasn't expired and the fault is only major (not dangerous), you're technically allowed to drive — but it's rarely wise to leave it.
The free retest

Check every bulb including number plate and reversing lamps, top up the washer bottle, look at the wipers, check tyre tread and pressures, sound the horn, and make sure no warning lamps stay lit with the engine running.
