Peugeot Service and Repair St Helens: PureTech, HDi and BlueHDi
Fastlane Autocare is an independent Peugeot garage on Boundary Road that services and repairs every Peugeot from the 108 to the Boxer to the manufacturer schedule, reads them on manufacturer-level diagnostic software, and deals with the jobs the badge is known for: the 1.2 PureTech wet belt, the 1.6 HDi turbo oil feed, and BlueHDi DPF and AdBlue faults, without main-dealer prices. This page sets out what is covered, what goes wrong on each engine, and how a visit runs.

What does an independent Peugeot specialist do that a general garage does not?
An independent Peugeot specialist services and repairs Peugeots to the manufacturer schedule, with parts and oil to Peugeot specification and the work recorded, so the warranty stays intact, and knows the engines well enough to catch the faults Peugeot is known for before they become engines: the PureTech wet belt, the HDi turbo, and the emissions systems on the diesels.
- Servicing to the Peugeot schedule, with the exact oil the PureTech wet belt needs, the service indicator reset and the record kept.
- Manufacturer-level diagnostics and coding, so a warning light is traced to the module that logged it rather than guessed from a generic reader.
- 1.2 PureTech wet belt replacement at the right interval, with the sump off and the oil pick-up cleaned, before it sheds into the engine.
- 1.6 HDi turbo and oil-feed work, tested first, because the feed pipe is usually the cause and the turbo the victim.
- DPF, EGR and AdBlue faults on HDi and BlueHDi diesels, repaired and regenerated, never deleted.
- Clutches, gearboxes, brakes, suspension, tyres and alignment on every model, plus the MOT on our own lane.
- 108, 208, 2008, 308, 3008, 5008, 508, Rifter, Partner, Expert and Boxer, petrol, diesel and electric.
What you get that a main dealer does not is the conversation: what the reading means, what it costs and what can wait, before anything is done. Send the registration through the reg check below or ring 01744 808586; we look up the engine and its known points before you arrive. For the fault-finding side see Peugeot diagnostics, and for the engine that brings most Peugeots in, Peugeot 208 wet belt replacement.
What is covered
Peugeot service and repair at Boundary Road, job by job
Everything below is done here, on the ramp, by technicians who see Peugeots every week. Nothing is sent to a dealer.
- Interim, full and major servicingTo the Peugeot schedule for the model and year, with the oil specification the PureTech and BlueHDi engines demand. See Peugeot 208 servicing and Peugeot 3008 servicing.
- Manufacturer-level diagnosticsEvery module read, live data watched, and the fault named before a part is quoted. See Peugeot diagnostics.
- PureTech wet belt replacementBelt, tensioner, sump off, oil pick-up cleaned, correct oil and filter. See does my car have a wet belt.

- EGR valve and coolerCleaned or replaced on the HDi engines that clog them. See Peugeot EGR valve replacement.
- Glow plugs and cold-start faultsTested individually, replaced without snapping. See Peugeot glow plug replacement.
- Clutch and gearboxManual clutches and flywheels, and the EAT6 and EAT8 automatics with their oil services.
- Brakes, suspension, tyres and alignmentMeasured and reported, replaced when you say so, aligned on the machine with the printout. See wheel alignment.
- MOT testingOn our own lane, with the repairs done in the same building. See MOT St Helens.
The kit on the bench in the photo is a PSA wet belt set of the kind fitted to the 1.2 PureTech in the 208, 2008, 308 and 3008, and to the same engine in the Citroen and DS models built alongside them. It is the single job that brings most Peugeots to Boundary Road, and the one where timing matters most.
If yours is under manufacturer warranty, nothing changes here: the schedule, the parts and the record are the same, and the warranty stays intact. The section further down covers why.

Engine by engine
What goes wrong on each Peugeot engine, and what we do about it
Every Peugeot engine has its known points. These are the ones that bring cars to Boundary Road most often, with the fix in plain terms.
| Engine and models | What you notice | What it usually is | What we do |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.2 PureTech petrol: 208, 2008, 308, 3008, 5008, Rifter | Oil pressure warning, rattle, oil level dropping | Wet belt degrading and shedding into the sump; wrong oil speeds it up | Belt and tensioner, sump off, pick-up cleaned, correct oil. Done at the interval, not after the light |
| 1.6 HDi diesel: 207, 208, 307, 308, 3008, Partner, 2004 to 2015 | Loss of power, smoke, whistle, oil use | Blocked turbo oil-feed pipe starving the turbo; injectors on higher mileage | Feed pipe, strainer and sludge dealt with before a turbo goes on. See 1.6 HDi engine repair |
| 1.5 and 2.0 BlueHDi diesel: 208, 308, 3008, 508, Expert, Boxer, 2015 on | AdBlue countdown, engine fault, no-start warning | NOx sensor, AdBlue injector or pump, DPF not regenerating | Read, sensor or injector replaced, regeneration completed. See AdBlue faults |
| 1.6 THP petrol: 208 GTi, 308, 3008, RCZ, pre-2016 | Rattle on start, timing fault, misfire | Timing chain and tensioner stretch; carbon on the inlet valves | Chain, tensioner and guides as a set; inlet cleaned. See timing chain replacement cost |
| All HDi and BlueHDi diesels on short journeys | DPF light, flat performance, limp mode | Filter loaded because the car never gets hot enough to regenerate | Forced regeneration or off-car clean, cause found. See Peugeot DPF cleaning |
| 1.6 and 2.0 HDi with EGR | Rough idle, black smoke, engine light | EGR valve or cooler clogged with soot | Cleaned or replaced. See Peugeot EGR valve replacement |
| EAT6 and EAT8 automatics: 308, 3008, 5008, 508 | Harsh shifts, hesitation, gearbox fault | Oil never changed, adaptation lost | Oil service and adaptation before any hardware is quoted |
| Diesels in winter | Long cranking, smoke, glow plug light | Failed glow plugs | Tested individually, replaced without snapping. See glow plug replacement |
| e-208 and e-2008 electric | Range dropping, brake noise | Battery state of health; rear brakes corroding from light use | Battery read on the tool, brakes freed and serviced. See hybrid and EV repair |
| Partner, Expert and Boxer vans | Judder, high biting point, clutch slip | Clutch and dual-mass flywheel on hard-worked vans | Clutch and flywheel together, quoted from the registration |
Two of those are MOT matters as well as repairs: an engine management lamp is a major failure and a DPF that has been removed fails on sight. The Peugeot dashboard warning lights guide decodes what the dash is showing, and the MOT page covers the test itself.
The big one
What is the PureTech wet belt problem, and when should it be replaced?
The PureTech wet belt problem is the timing belt on the 1.2 three-cylinder petrol degrading inside the engine, where it runs in oil, and shedding fragments that block the oil pick-up and starve the engine, so the first sign is often a low oil pressure warning rather than a noise, and the belt should be replaced at the interval Peugeot now specifies rather than at the point the light comes on.
Two things shorten its life: the wrong engine oil at a service, because the belt is only rated for the specification Peugeot lists, and the car being run low on oil. Both are common on cars serviced cheaply elsewhere. The repair is the belt and tensioner with the sump off and the oil pick-up cleaned, refilled with the correct oil, which is why it costs more than a dry belt.
Send the registration and the mileage through the reg check and we tell you the interval for your engine and whether the belt has been done. See Peugeot 208 wet belt replacement for the job, does my car have a wet belt to check any car by registration, and cambelt water pump replacement cost for where wet belts sit against dry ones. Ring 01744 808586 the first time the oil pressure light flickers.
How a visit runs
What happens when your Peugeot comes to Boundary Road
-
The car is looked up before it arrives
Model, engine, mileage and the known points for that combination, so a PureTech at 60,000 miles or a 1.6 HDi with a whistle is on the sheet before the bonnet is up.
-
Read on manufacturer-level software
Every module, not just the engine. Stored and pending codes, live data and the freeze-frame of when the fault happened.
-
Inspected on the ramp
Oil condition and level, belt and turbo checks, brakes and suspension measured, tyres and alignment noted.
-
You get a phone call with the answer and a price
What it is, what it costs, and what can wait. Nothing is fitted on a guess and nothing extra is done without you saying yes.
-
Repaired with parts to Peugeot specification
Genuine or OE-quality parts and the exact oil the engine is rated for, with software updates where the fix needs one.
-
Reset, recorded and road tested
Service indicator reset, the work written into the record, and the car driven before it goes back.
Approved, authorised, independent

Are you a Peugeot approved garage, and does it matter for my warranty?
Fastlane is an independent Peugeot garage rather than a Peugeot-authorised repairer, and for your warranty that does not matter: under UK Block Exemption rules Peugeot cannot tie the warranty to its dealer network, so provided the work follows the Peugeot schedule, uses parts and oil to Peugeot specification and is properly recorded, the manufacturer warranty stays exactly as it was.
Those three conditions are how the job is done here anyway. The schedule is checked for the model and year, the oil carries the specification the engine is rated for, which on a PureTech is the difference between a wet belt that lasts and one that does not, and the service is recorded with the indicator reset. Keep the invoices; they list the oil and the parts.
What changes is the bill and the conversation. Dealer labour rates are what they are, and a dealer will sell you a turbo for a 1.6 HDi whose real problem was a blocked feed pipe. Here the reading is explained, the cause is proven before the part is quoted, and the figure sits below the franchise. A bigger job can go on Payment Assist, and it can be paired with the MOT so the car comes in once. See is a full service history worth it for what the record does at resale.

Peugeot service and repair St Helens — paying over time
Peugeot repairs never arrive in a convenient month
Nobody plans for the wet belt or the turbo whistle. Whatever the diagnosis turns into can be spread across four months at nought per cent through pay monthly car repairs, decided on a soft search that does not mark your credit file.
The turbo question
Why do 1.6 HDi turbos fail, and is it always the turbo?
1.6 HDi turbos fail because the oil-feed pipe and its strainer block with sludge, starving the turbo bearing of oil until it seizes, so the turbo is the victim rather than the cause, and fitting a new turbo without clearing the feed, the strainer, the sump and the oil pick-up is how the second turbo fails a few months after the first.
The sludge comes from extended oil intervals and the wrong oil on an engine that runs hot and hard. The signs are a whistle, a loss of power, blue or black smoke and oil use. The test is simple, oil flow at the feed, and it is the first thing done here before a turbo is quoted, because the cheap version of this job is the feed pipe and a proper oil service, not a turbo.
Where the turbo has already gone, the job is the turbo, the feed pipe and strainer, the sump off and the pick-up cleaned, and an oil and filter change with the correct grade, which is what makes the new one last. See Peugeot 1.6 HDi engine repair for the full job and pay monthly car repairs for spreading it. Ring 01744 808586 the first day you hear the whistle.
Servicing
What does a Peugeot service need that other cars do not?
A Peugeot service needs the exact oil specification the engine is rated for, because on the PureTech the wet belt only survives in the oil it was designed for and on the BlueHDi the particulate filter clogs on anything else, and it needs the service indicator and the oil-life data reset on the tool so the car counts the next interval from the right point.
Beyond that it is a proper service done properly: brakes measured, suspension and bushes checked, the wet belt or timing chain listened to and inspected, the DPF load read on the diesels, and the AdBlue system checked for stored faults on the BlueHDi. Intervals are 12 months or the mileage Peugeot specifies for the engine, whichever comes first, and the years figure applies to a car that has barely moved.
The record matters at resale on a Peugeot more than most, because a buyer of a used PureTech wants to see the wet belt done and the right oil in the book. See Peugeot 208 servicing and Peugeot 3008 servicing for the model detail, what is included in a car service for how interim, full and major compare, and car servicing St Helens for the general page.
The numbers
Six numbers behind a Peugeot
The figures that decide what we look at first on your car.
Where the cars on our ramps come from

Peugeot service and repair St Helens, and the towns owners drive in from
Boundary Road is a couple of minutes off the A58 and the Linkway, and minutes from junction 23 of the M6. Peugeots come in from every direction, usually after a wet belt or a turbo quote elsewhere.
Cars also come over from Liverpool, Wigan, Warrington and across Cheshire. Peugeot 208 servicing covers the routine work and Peugeot diagnostics the faults.
Worth knowing
Why the oil grade matters more on a Peugeot than on most cars
On a PureTech the timing belt lives inside the engine, bathed in oil. Peugeot rates the belt for one oil specification, and an oil outside it attacks the rubber, which is why belts on cars serviced with whatever was on the shelf shed years early. On the BlueHDi the particulate filter is clogged by the ash in ordinary oil, so a cheap service turns into a DPF bill a year later.
The specification is printed on the can and on our invoice. It is the one question worth asking any garage that services a Peugeot.
The cars we see
208, 2008, 308, 3008, Partner: the Peugeots on our ramps
The 208 and 2008 are the cars we see most, because there are more of them and because the PureTech brings them in; the 308 and 3008 follow for the same engine and for the BlueHDi emissions systems; and the Partner, Expert and Boxer vans make up the rest of a typical month with clutches, DPFs and hard-worked suspension.
Each has its own pattern. The small cars are wet belts, oil pressure warnings and the occasional EAT6 gearbox that has never had an oil change. The 3008 and 5008 add AdBlue faults and the bigger brakes that wear faster on a heavy car. The older 207, 307 and 308 with the 1.6 HDi are turbos and injectors, and the vans are clutches and flywheels.
The e-208 and e-2008 add battery state of health and brakes that corrode from light use, and the manufacturer-level tool is what makes them workable outside a dealer. Whatever the badge on yours, Peugeot diagnostics covers the fault-finding side and the registration tells us the rest.

Been quoted by a Peugeot dealer and want a second figure?

Peugeot service and repair St Helens • straight answers
Questions Peugeot owners ask us most
Fastlane Autocare is an independent Peugeot specialist on Boundary Road in St Helens, a couple of minutes off the A58 and the Linkway, servicing and repairing every Peugeot from the 108 to the Boxer on manufacturer-level diagnostic software at independent labour rates.
Cars come in from across the borough, Widnes, Warrington, Wigan and Liverpool, most within twenty minutes of the workshop. Send the registration and we look the car up before you arrive. See Peugeot diagnostics and the contact page for directions. Ring 01744 808586.
Fastlane is an independent Peugeot garage rather than a Peugeot-authorised repairer, which means the same schedule, the same parts specification and the same record as a dealer, at independent labour rates and with the fault explained to you before anything is fitted; under Block Exemption rules that keeps your manufacturer warranty intact.
What an authorised repairer has that we do not is the franchise, and what we have that they do not is the price and the conversation. See why the record matters and car servicing St Helens.
An independent garage does not affect your Peugeot warranty: under UK Block Exemption rules Peugeot cannot tie the warranty to dealer servicing, so provided the schedule is followed, parts and oil meet the Peugeot specification and the work is recorded, the warranty stays intact.
That is how the job is done here, with the oil specification on the invoice, which on a PureTech is what protects the wet belt. Keep the invoices. See Peugeot 208 servicing and is a full service history worth it.
The Peugeot 1.2 PureTech wet belt problem is the timing belt, which runs inside the engine in oil, degrading and shedding fragments that block the oil pick-up and starve the engine, so the first sign is often a low oil pressure warning rather than a noise, and the wrong oil at a service or a low oil level speeds it up.
The fix is the belt and tensioner with the sump off and the pick-up cleaned, done at the interval rather than after the light. See Peugeot 208 wet belt replacement and does my car have a wet belt. Ring 01744 808586 the first time the oil light flickers.
A PureTech wet belt should be replaced at the interval Peugeot now specifies for the engine, which is shorter than the figure first published, and sooner on a car that has had the wrong oil, been run low on oil or shows any sign of belt debris in the oil filler, because a belt that has started to shed cannot be nursed to the next service.
Send the registration and the mileage and we tell you the interval for your engine and whether the belt has been done. See Peugeot 208 wet belt replacement for the job and cambelt water pump replacement cost for where wet belts sit against dry ones.
A Peugeot 1.6 HDi with a whistle and no power usually has a turbo being starved of oil by a blocked feed pipe and strainer, and the turbo is the victim rather than the cause, so the test is oil flow at the feed before any turbo is quoted, because a new turbo on a blocked feed fails again within months.
The proper job is the feed pipe and strainer, the sump off and the pick-up cleaned, the turbo where it has already gone, and an oil service with the correct grade. See Peugeot 1.6 HDi engine repair and pay monthly car repairs, or ring 01744 808586.
We fix Peugeot AdBlue faults on the 1.5 and 2.0 BlueHDi by reading the system on the manufacturer-level tool and replacing the NOx sensor, AdBlue injector or pump that has failed, then clearing the countdown, because an AdBlue fault left alone ends with a car that will not start once the counter reaches zero.
The countdown is the car's deadline, not a suggestion. See AdBlue faults for what the messages mean and Peugeot diagnostics for how the system is read. Ring 01744 808586 with the mileage left on the countdown.
We clean Peugeot DPFs by forced regeneration on the tool where the filter can be saved and by off-car cleaning where it cannot, with the cause found first, and we will not delete or remove one at any price, because a car without its filter fails the MOT on sight and it is an offence to drive on the road.
Short journeys are the usual cause on a BlueHDi, with a sensor or EGR fault behind the repeat cases. See Peugeot DPF cleaning and DPF cleaning cost for the figures.
Peugeot dashboard warning lights follow the usual colour rule, red for stop, amber for have it checked, but the ones that matter most on a Peugeot are the oil pressure light on a PureTech, which can mean the wet belt is shedding, the AdBlue message on a BlueHDi, which is a countdown to a no-start, and the DPF light, which means the filter needs a run or a clean.
Every symbol is decoded on Peugeot dashboard warning lights, and the engine warning light covers the one that appears most. If a red light is on, stop and ring 01744 808586.
A Peugeot should be serviced every 12 months or at the mileage Peugeot specifies for the engine, whichever comes first, with the years figure applying even to a car that has barely moved, and on a PureTech or a BlueHDi the oil specification at every service matters as much as the interval.
Brake fluid is on a two-year cycle and the wet belt or timing chain has its own interval alongside. See Peugeot 208 servicing, Peugeot 3008 servicing and what is included in a car service.
We use genuine Peugeot parts where the job calls for them and OE-quality parts from the manufacturers who supply Peugeot where they are the same part in a different box, and either keeps the warranty because the specification, not the logo, is what the rules require.
Wet belt kits, AdBlue components and software-dependent modules are where the genuine part earns its price; pads, filters and bushes from the OE supplier do not. You are told which is being fitted and why. See brake repairs and car repair cost.
We read Peugeot fault codes on manufacturer-level diagnostic software that talks to every module on the car, not a generic code reader, so a warning light is traced to the module that logged it with the live data and freeze-frame that explain why, and coding and software updates are done on the same tool.
That matters on a car where one failed sensor can light three warnings. See Peugeot diagnostics and Peugeot dashboard warning lights.
We service and repair the Peugeot Partner, Expert and Boxer as well as the cars, and the vans bring their own pattern: clutches and dual-mass flywheels on hard-worked examples, DPFs on stop-start urban work, suspension that carries a load every day, and the BlueHDi AdBlue system on the newer ones.
A van off the road costs its owner every day, so the read and the repair are turned round as quickly as the job allows. See van MOT and servicing St Helens and DPF cleaning cost, or ring 01744 808586.
A Peugeot diesel that is hard to start in the cold, with long cranking and a puff of smoke, usually has one or more failed glow plugs, and on the HDi engines they are tested individually and replaced carefully because a snapped glow plug in the head turns a small job into a big one.
If the glow plug light flashes while driving, it is a different fault and needs reading on the tool. See Peugeot glow plug replacement and Peugeot diagnostics.
We repair and service the Peugeot EAT6 and EAT8 automatic gearboxes, and most of the harsh shifting and hesitation owners report on them is oil that has never been changed and adaptation values that have drifted, so the oil service and a reset on the tool come before any hardware is quoted.
The gearboxes are sold as sealed for life, which in practice means the life of the oil. See gearbox repairs St Helens for the gearbox side and Peugeot diagnostics for how the fault is read.
We work on the electric Peugeot e-208 and e-2008, reading battery state of health on the manufacturer-level tool, servicing the parts an electric car still has, and dealing with the rear brakes that corrode from light use because the car does most of its braking through the motor.
High-voltage work is inspection and diagnosis by qualified technicians. See hybrid and EV repair St Helens and MOT St Helens for what the test covers on an EV.
A Peugeot service takes around two hours for an interim, two to three for a full and half a day for a major, with most owners dropping the car in the morning and collecting it the same afternoon, and the wet belt or a DPF regeneration adding time where the read shows they are due.
If the service turns up a belt due, a turbo whistle or an AdBlue fault, you get a phone call with the price before anything is done. Pairing the service with the MOT saves a second trip. See car servicing St Helens or ring 01744 808586.
An independent Peugeot garage is usually cheaper than the dealer, because the labour rate is lower and because the fault is proven before the part is quoted, which on a Peugeot is the difference between a feed pipe and a turbo, or a regeneration and a new filter, at the same parts specification and with the warranty intact.
Where a job is genuinely big, a wet belt or a turbo, it can be spread over three, four or six months at nought per cent. See pay monthly car repairs and car repair cost.
You can spread the cost of Peugeot repairs over three, four or six months at nought per cent with Payment Assist, decided on a soft search that does not mark your credit file, which matters on a car where a wet belt or a turbo job is a real bill.
Spreading it means the belt is done at the interval rather than after the oil light. See pay monthly car repairs for how it works and car repair cost for the figures, or ring 01744 808586 and we set it up when you book.
We cover Peugeot service and repair for St Helens and the towns around it, including Haydock, Prescot, Rainhill, Newton-le-Willows, Billinge, Eccleston, Widnes, Warrington, Wigan and Liverpool, from the workshop on Boundary Road, because wet belt, turbo and DPF work need the ramp and the manufacturer tool.
Collection can be arranged where a car is not safe to drive. See the contact page for directions and garage services in St Helens for everything else done here.
