Symbols and colours
Peugeot dashboard warning lights and what they mean
Peugeot uses the same colour convention as almost every manufacturer, and it is worth knowing because it answers the first question people have. Red means stop as soon as it is safe. Amber means something needs checking soon but the car is usually still driveable. Green and blue are informational and simply tell you a system is switched on. If you are not sure what the light means, our auto electrician in St Helens explains how we test rather than guess.
Whatever the light turns out to be, it is diagnosed properly before any part is ordered: car diagnostics in St Helens, from £49.
Where it gets less obvious is the symbols themselves. A coil shape flashing on a diesel is not a glow plug problem. A spanner or service symbol is not a fault at all. An exclamation mark inside a circle means the brake system, while the same mark inside a triangle is a general alert asking you to read the message on the screen.
Our job is to turn whatever is lit into a specific answer about your car. That means reading stored and pending codes, then looking at live data while the engine runs, then testing the circuit where the data does not settle it. Only then does anyone talk about parts.
If a symbol has appeared and you cannot place it, ring 01744 808586 or send a photo of the dash on WhatsApp. We will tell you what it is and whether it can wait.

Where the symbols lead
Peugeot repairs behind the common dashboard symbols
Most dashboard lights end up at one of these jobs. Pick the closest, or ring 01744 808586 and describe the symbol.
Peugeot Diagnostics
A full diagnostic session on the equipment, with live data and circuit testing rather than a code read.
Peugeot Warning Lights
How urgent each type of light is, and the trigger points for booking a diagnostic rather than waiting.
Peugeot Engine Warning Light
The orange engine symbol, which covers everything from emissions sensors to misfires and boost faults.
Peugeot DPF Repair
The DPF symbol and what sits behind it, including failed regeneration and rising oil level.
Peugeot DPF Cleaning
On-car cleaning where the filter is still serviceable, so a replacement is not the automatic answer.
Peugeot EGR Valve Replacement
Emissions warnings and rough running confirmed on live data before the valve comes off the engine.
Peugeot Glow Plug Replacement
The coil symbol on a diesel, tested plug by plug rather than replaced as a set on a guess.
Peugeot Turbo Replacement
Limp mode and boost warnings checked at the actuator and oil feed before condemning a turbo.
Peugeot Wet Belt Replacement
The belt-in-oil job on PureTech petrol engines, a known cause of oil pressure warnings when neglected.
Peugeot 208 Wet Belt Replacement
The same job on the 208 specifically, done to interval with the sump properly cleaned out.
Peugeot Cambelt Replacement
Belt, tensioner and water pump work carried out to the correct interval for your engine.
Peugeot 308 Servicing
Model-specific servicing for the 308, including the oil condition its engine depends on.

Peugeot Service and Repair
Everything else we do for Peugeot owners in St Helens, from MOT work to tyres and suspension.
Where we work
Areas we help Peugeot drivers in
Our Peugeot dashboard warning lights work covers drivers from Boundary Road in St Helens right across the borough, Merseyside and the wider North West.
Why owners come to us
Why Peugeot drivers bring warning lights here
There is no mystery to it. We read it properly, explain what we found, and quote before we start.
You get told what the symbol is
Before any work, you get a plain answer on what has lit up and what it usually means on your model.
Diagnosis before parts
Nothing gets replaced on a hunch. If we cannot show you why a part is at fault, we keep testing until we can.
A written quote first
You see the cost before work begins. If something else turns up on the ramp, we ring you rather than adding it on.
Dealer-level equipment
Module-level access, so ABS, airbag, body and engine faults can all be read rather than only the generic engine codes.
The light goes out for a reason
We fix the cause and then confirm the fault does not return, instead of clearing it and handing the car straight back.
A real garage on Boundary Road
Ring 01744 808586 and you are talking to the workshop, not a directory listing or a call centre.
Model by model
The Peugeots we see dashboard lights on
Different models bring different symbols with them. These are the ones we deal with most.
208 and 2008
Mostly PureTech petrol. Oil pressure and engine management warnings are the ones to take seriously here, because the belt-in-oil design links oil condition to engine health.
308
A mix of PureTech petrol and HDi diesel. Emissions warnings dominate on the diesels, particularly on cars used for short local journeys.
3008 and 5008
Heavier cars that work their brakes and suspension harder, so ABS and ESP warnings from wheel speed sensors are common alongside emissions lights.
Partner and Rifter
Working vehicles covering real mileage. DPF and AdBlue related warnings make up most of what we see, usually tied to how the van is used.
108 and older 107
Simple cars where an amber light is more often a sensor or a wiring issue than anything expensive. Worth reading before assuming the worst.
Older HDi diesels
The additive and filter system on these has its own logic, and a warning often relates to fluid level or a sensor rather than the filter itself.
In the workshop
What a week of Peugeot dashboard lights looks like
A fair snapshot of what comes through the doors, and what we do about it.
Reading the fault properly
Stored codes first, then live data with the engine running, then the circuit itself if the data does not settle it.
Up on the ramp
Plenty of warnings have a mechanical cause. Wheel speed sensors, wiring and leaks are found with the car in the air, not on a laptop.
Confirming the fix
Once the cause is dealt with we run the car and check the fault does not return before you collect it.
Intermittent lights are the ones worth booking properly rather than squeezing into a quick slot. A fault that has already cleared itself leaves very little behind, so we need the freeze frame data and enough time to reproduce the conditions that set it.
That is also why we ask people not to disconnect the battery or clear codes before bringing the car in. It feels like a reasonable thing to try, but it wipes the very information that would have identified the cause quickly.
Getting your Peugeot booked in
Ring 01744 808586, message us on WhatsApp or book online. A photo of the dash is genuinely useful if you are not sure which symbol you are looking at.
Most diagnostic sessions are same-day or next-day. If the light is red, ring before driving over and we will tell you whether the car should be moved at all.
Colour
Red, amber, green and blue on a Peugeot dashboard
Red is the one that matters most. Oil pressure, coolant temperature, brake system and charging warnings are all red, and all of them mean stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. There is no version of these where carrying on is the cheaper option, and on an oil pressure warning in particular the difference between stopping and continuing can be the difference between a repair and an engine.
Amber covers most of what people actually see: engine management, DPF, ABS, ESP, airbag, tyre pressure and power steering. The car is usually driveable, but the fault will not resolve itself and most of these are MOT failures while they are lit. Booking in within a week or so is the sensible response.
Green and blue are not warnings at all. They confirm a system is active, such as lights, cruise control or a driving mode. If one of those is on and you were not expecting it, the answer is usually in the handbook rather than the workshop. If you are unsure which category a symbol falls into, ring 01744 808586 and describe it.
Common symbols
The symbols people ring us about most
The orange engine outline is by far the most common. It covers a very wide range of faults, from an emissions sensor reading slightly out to a genuine misfire, which is exactly why it needs reading rather than interpreting. If the car is also lacking power or has gone into a reduced performance mode, treat it as more pressing.
The coil shape on a diesel confuses a lot of owners. Steady on a cold start is completely normal and simply means the glow plugs are heating. Flashing is not about the plugs at all on most Peugeots; it is the engine management warning using a different symbol, and it usually points at fuelling or emissions.
The DPF symbol tells you the filter is loaded and the car wants a chance to clear it. A steady run at motorway speed sometimes resolves it. If it keeps returning, something else is preventing regeneration and that is what we go looking for. Our Peugeot DPF Repair page covers the usual causes.
Known issues
Peugeot-specific causes worth knowing about
The PureTech petrol engine uses a timing belt that runs in engine oil. It is a sound design when it is maintained, but as the belt ages it can shed material into the sump, and that debris can restrict the oil pickup. The first sign is often an oil pressure warning, which is why we never treat that particular light as a sender fault on one of these engines until we have checked properly. See Peugeot 208 Wet Belt Replacement.
On the HDi diesels, the emissions system is the usual source of amber lights. DPF, EGR and the additive system all interact, so a warning on one is frequently caused by another, and the car will keep flagging it until the underlying reason is dealt with rather than reset.
Neither of these makes a Peugeot a bad car to own. Both are entirely manageable when they are caught at the right point, which is the whole argument for having a light read properly. Ring 01744 808586 and we will tell you where yours stands.
How it works
Getting Peugeot dashboard warning lights diagnosed
Four steps, no surprises. The same process whether the fault is constant or comes and goes.
1. Send us the symbol
Ring 01744 808586 or send a photo of the dash on WhatsApp. That alone tells us how urgent it is and how long to allow.
2. We read every module
Engine, ABS, airbag and body modules, not just the generic engine codes, because warnings often come from more than one place.
3. You get a written quote
Parts, labour and what we recommend, in writing, before work starts. Nothing is added without a phone call.
4. We confirm it stays off
After the repair the car is run and rechecked, so you are not driving away hoping the light does not return.
Straight answers
A proper reading, not a guess from a symbol chart
Symbol charts online will tell you what a light is called. They cannot tell you why yours is on, and that gap is where most of the money gets wasted, because the obvious part named by a code is very often working perfectly.
We have been on Boundary Road since 2002 and Peugeots are regular work here. That familiarity matters more on a difficult fault than any single piece of equipment, because it narrows down which of the possible causes is actually likely on your model.
Ring 01744 808586, message us on WhatsApp, or book online and drop the car in. You will know what you are dealing with before you have to decide anything.
