What gets checked on a motorcycle MOT
The bike test follows the DVSA motorcycle inspection manual. It is a safety check on the day, not a service, and these are the areas the tester works through:
Brakes. Pad and disc condition, lever and pedal operation, brake performance on the roller or decelerometer, and the condition of hoses and cables. Worn pads are one of the most common fails and are replaced here.
Tyres and wheels. Tread depth (1mm across three-quarters of the width for bikes over 50cc, visible tread for 50cc and under), cuts, bulges, correct type and fitment, wheel bearings and rim condition. Motorbike tyres are fitted while the bike is on the ramp.
Lights, horn and reflectors. Headlamp aim and dip, tail light, brake light, indicators, number plate light, rear reflector and an audible horn.
Steering and suspension. Steering head bearings, fork seals and action, swingarm bearings, rear shock and any play in the linkage.
Drive chain and sprockets. Chain tension, wear and guard; sprocket teeth for hooking.
Frame, exhaust and the rest. Frame and mountings, the exhaust for security, leaks and excessive noise, the fuel system for leaks, footrests, seat, throttle return, mirrors where fitted, the number plate and the sidecar and its attachment on a Class 2 combination.

Before you come in
Six things to check before you ride in
Five minutes in the garage at home turns a lot of fails into passes. These are the items we see most on bikes, and every one is free to check yourself.
-
Every bulb, and the horn
Headlamp on dip and main, tail light, brake light on both lever and pedal, indicators and the number plate light. Lighting is the most common fail and usually a bulb.
-
Tyre tread and pressures
At least 1mm across three-quarters of the tread on anything over 50cc, no cuts or bulges, and the right pressures in the handbook. Read more
-
Chain and sprockets
A chain with the right slack, no tight spots and no rust, and sprocket teeth that are not hooked. A slack, dry chain is an easy advisory to avoid.
-
Brakes front and rear
Feel for a spongy lever or a pedal that goes to the stop. Check pad thickness through the caliper and look for fluid at the hoses. Read more
-
Steering head and forks
Pull the front brake on and rock the bike: a clunk is play in the head bearings. Look for oil on the fork stanchions.
-
Plate, mirrors and exhaust
A clean, correctly spaced number plate, mirrors secure where fitted, and an exhaust that is tight, not leaking and not marked "not for road use".

The failures we fix most on bikes
Worn or damaged tyres, a hooked sprocket and a slack chain, brake pads down to the metal and blown bulbs make up most motorcycle fails. All of it is repaired on site, usually the same day.
Steering head and wheel bearings, fork seals and a leaking or excessively loud exhaust are the next most common. We tell you what can wait and what cannot before any work starts.
Once it is put right, the retest is done here and it is free.

FAQs
Questions riders ask about the MOT
A motorcycle MOT at Fastlane is £29.65, which is the DVSA maximum for Class 1 and Class 2 bikes, so there is no cheaper legal test to find. That covers the full inspection and, if it fails, the retest here is free once the repair is done. Book online, or call 01744 808586 and we will find you the next slot on Boundary Road.
Class 1 covers motorcycles, mopeds and scooters up to 200cc. Class 2 covers anything over 200cc, with or without a sidecar. Both are tested to the same DVSA motorcycle manual and both cost £29.65 here. If you are not sure which yours is, send the registration on WhatsApp and we will tell you and book it in.
Brakes, tyres and wheels, lights and the horn, steering head bearings and suspension, the drive chain and sprockets, the frame, exhaust noise and security, the fuel system, footrests, seat, throttle return, mirrors and the number plate. It is a safety inspection on the day, not a service, which is why a bike can pass and still be due a service.
At least 1mm across three-quarters of the tread width and around the whole circumference for any bike over 50cc, with visible tread on the rest. Bikes of 50cc and under only need visible tread across the width. Cuts, bulges, exposed cord and a tyre of the wrong type or rating also fail. Motorbike tyres can be fitted while the bike is here.
About 45 minutes for a straightforward bike, so most riders wait. Allow an hour on a first visit or if the bike has a sidecar. If it needs a repair before it can pass, we tell you straight away what it is and how long it will take, and the retest is done here without a second booking. Call 01744 808586 to check times.
Yes, to a pre-booked test and straight back, provided the bike is otherwise roadworthy and insured. Riding anywhere else on an expired MOT is an offence and most insurers will not cover you. Book the test first so you have the appointment to show, then ride in to Boundary Road.
You get the list of failures and advisories, we price the repair before any work starts, and once it is put right we retest it here for free. Leave the bike with us and the partial retest is free; bring it back within ten working days and it is still free for the items that failed. Most bike fails are fixed the same day.
It can. The tester checks that the exhaust is secure, not leaking and not excessively noisy, and any silencer marked "not for road use" is a fail regardless of how quiet it is. A road-legal aftermarket system in good condition passes. If yours is borderline, ask when you book and we will tell you before the test rather than after. Call 01744 808586.
Three years from the date it was first registered, then every year. You can test up to a month minus a day early and keep the same renewal date. The reg tool on this page tells you the exact date, or send the registration on WhatsApp and we will check it for you.
Yes. Tyres, chains and sprockets, brake pads and discs, bearings, fork seals, bulbs and diagnostics are all done in the same building as the test lane, which is why the retest can be free. Servicing to the manufacturer schedule is on the motorbike servicing page, and repairs on motorbike repairs.
Boundary Road is a short ride from all three, and from Billinge, Prescot and Rainhill. There are not many motorcycle testing stations in the area, so riders come in from across the borough. Book a few days ahead where you can, or call 01744 808586 and ask for the next bike slot.
