MOT Wigan

Need an MOT soon?

Fastlane Autocare is a DVSA-approved MOT test centre eight miles south of Wigan, down the A49 or the B5205 through Ashton-in-Makerfield and Bryn. Class 4 cars and small vans from £40 booked online, plus Class 1 and Class 2 motorcycles at £29.65 — £14.85 under the DVSA maximum that most Wigan main dealers charge. We are at 232-254 Boundary Road, St Helens WA10 2PZ. Fail here and you go nowhere. The workshop is the same building, so we fix it, retest it free, and you drive away with a pass. Open Monday to Friday 8:30am–5pm and Saturday 9am–12:30pm. Call 01744 808586, WhatsApp us your registration, or book your MOT Wigan online.

Wigan has no shortage of test centres. What it has fewer of is places that test and repair under one roof. Fail at a test-only centre and you are booking a second garage and a third journey before the day is out.

One visit, start to finishTest lane and workshop in the same building, so a fail goes straight onto a ramp. Suspension, brakes, tyres, steering and diagnostics all handled here, and the retest is free.

Closest from the south and westPemberton, Winstanley, Orrell, Worsley Mesnes, Goose Green and Marus Bridge are the quickest run in, with Bryn and Ashton-in-Makerfield closer still. Ask about collection when you book, or ring 01744 808586.

What our customers say

Real Google reviews, left by people who brought us their MOT, servicing and repairs at Boundary Road — a fair few of them having driven past closer garages to do it.

That is the honest answer on MOT Wigan pricing once you count what a retest would have cost you elsewhere.

MOT Wigan: the dates and numbers that actually matter

The numbers worth knowing before you book: when it is actually due, how early you can test without losing days, and what a fail really costs.

Comparing on the test fee alone is where it falls apart. Six of the ten Wigan garages listed on the booking sites charge the full DVSA maximum, and a cheap test at a place that cannot repair costs more the moment something fails.

MOT Wigan · Before you come in

Keep the MOT tester happy — six things to check

Worth five minutes before you commit to the drive down. None of it costs anything and it removes most of the avoidable failures.

  1. Every bulb, front and back

Every lamp front and back, fogs and plate light included. Lighting fails more cars than anything else and is almost always a bulb. Read more

  2. Tread and tyre pressure

1.6mm at the worst point, not the average. Wear on one shoulder usually means the tracking is out — and often that the suspension took a knock. Read more

  3. Wipers and screenwash

Torn or smearing blades fail, and an empty washer bottle fails on the spot. Both cost pennies to put right beforehand. Read more

  4. Brakes and handbrake

Brake firmly a few times on a clear road to clean the discs, then check the handbrake holds on a slope without travelling halfway up. Read more

  5. Warning lights on the dash

Airbag, ABS, engine management, brake fluid, tyre pressure — all testable, all an automatic fail while lit. Read more

  6. Plates, mirrors and belts

Plates clean and correctly spaced, mirrors solid, belts latching and retracting. Empty the boot so the floor lifts. Read more

Common MOT failure repairs carried out at Fastlane Autocare in Wigan

What we end up replacing most

Springs, bushes and drop links lead it, then brakes, then tyres worn unevenly because the tracking went out when the suspension took a knock.

They are connected more often than people expect. One pothole can shift the alignment, scrub a shoulder off a tyre and start a bush failing, and all three turn up on the same test sheet a year later.

All of it is done in the building the test happens in, so nothing is handed on and the retest costs nothing. If it is a warning light rather than a component we read the codes first. See diagnostics or call 01744 808586.

What the tester works through, and in what order

The MOT is a fixed list checked against a published standard. Nothing on it is an opinion about how the car drives, which is why a car that feels perfect can still fail.

Before it movesNumber plates, every exterior lamp and its colour and aim, mirrors, wipers and washers, the windscreen, tyres and tread, doors, and the body for corrosion or sharp edges.

InsideSeat belts and mountings, seats, the horn, the driver’s view of the road, and any warning lamp still lit that should have gone out.

Up in the airThis is where the Wigan failures land: suspension arms, springs, bushes and ball joints, steering play, brake pipes and hoses, the exhaust, the fuel system, and the structure in the prescribed areas.

Rollers and gasBraking force at each wheel and the balance across each axle, then emissions at the tailpipe.

A fail is therefore a specific named item, not a judgement — and a fixable one. See failed MOT repairs or call 01744 808586.

Springs and suspension: the failure you will never feel coming

Brakes and tyres you can check yourself. Suspension you cannot — and that is exactly why it fails so many cars. Nothing about the way it drives tells you a spring is about to go.

Coil springs almost always break at the bottom coil. That is where road salt collects and where water sits against the metal without ever fully drying, so it corrodes from the inside of the pigtail outwards. By the time the pitting is deep enough to matter the spring is carrying the same load on less steel, and it lets go on a cold morning or into a pothole.

It is judged by the tester’s inspection, not a measurement, which is why the same spring can be an advisory one year and a failure the next with nothing having visibly changed. If last year’s certificate mentioned corroded springs, this is the year to act.

Bushes are the quieter half. Rubber perishes, the arm gains movement it should not have, and the tester finds play with a bar that you would never notice through the steering wheel. Drop links go the same way — usually announcing themselves with a knock over speed bumps long before test day.

What you can check: push down hard on each corner and let go. It should settle in one movement. If it bounces two or three times the dampers are tired. Then look behind each front wheel for the bottom of the spring — heavy flaking rust there is worth showing someone before the test rather than after.

Springs are replaced in pairs so the car sits level, and a snapped one can slice the tyre next to it. We do the lot here — see suspension repairs — and the retest is free. Call 01744 808586.

Tyres: the 1.6mm nobody measures in the right place

The limit is 1.6mm across the centre three-quarters of the tread, all the way round — and it is measured at the worst point, not the average. A tyre showing 3mm where you can see it can be under the limit where you cannot.

Uneven wear is the giveaway that something else is wrong. Worn on both edges and the pressures have been low. Worn in the middle and they have been too high. Worn on one edge only and the tracking is out, usually after a pothole or a kerb.

That last one matters on a suspension-heavy page, because the same knock that shifts your alignment is often what starts a spring or a bush failing. Tyres wearing on one shoulder is frequently the first visible symptom of a suspension problem you have not noticed yet.

Two minutes with a 20p: push it into the groove at the inner edge, the middle and the outer edge of all four tyres. If the coin’s outer band is visible anywhere, that tyre is at or under the limit. Check the sidewalls for bulges while you are down there.

We fit tyres and check alignment on the same visit so a new set does not wear the same way. Call 01744 808586.

MOT Wigan · Where our Wigan cars come from

Which side of Wigan are you on?

Most of our Wigan work comes from the south and west of the borough — Pemberton, Winstanley, Orrell, Worsley Mesnes, Goose Green, Hawkley Hall and Marus Bridge, with Bryn and Ashton-in-Makerfield closer again.

It is the roads that decide it. The A49 and the B5205 run straight down towards us, so from that side you are here in about twenty minutes without going near Wigan town centre. From Leigh, Atherton, Tyldesley or Golborne you would be crossing the whole borough west — worth it if the car needs proper repair work alongside the test, less so for a routine one.

Tell us where you are starting from and we will be straight with you about whether the drive is worth making. Call 01744 808586.

MOT due, or already expired?

Driving without a valid MOT invalidates most insurance. Send us the reg and we’ll get you booked in.

MOT Wigan · Did you know

Springs are the advisory people ignore once too often

A corroded coil spring flagged as an advisory does not improve over a winter. It carries on rotting, and they tend to snap in cold weather or into a pothole — often taking the tyre beside them with it. If yours were mentioned last year, this is the year to deal with them.

MOT Wigan · FAQs

Questions drivers ask

How much is an MOT in Wigan?

An MOT at Fastlane Autocare starts from £40 booked online, for a Class 4 car or small van. The DVSA maximum is £54.85, and a good number of Wigan main dealers charge exactly that.

The price you book is the price you pay. It does not change once the car is on the ramp, and there is no separate charge for the retest if we do the repair.

Book your MOT Wigan online or call 01744 808586.

Is it worth driving from Wigan to St Helens for an MOT?

It is worth the eight miles when you want the test and any repair handled in one place. The A49 south, or the B5205 through Ashton-in-Makerfield and Bryn, takes about twenty minutes.

A test-only centre finds the fault and stops there — you then book a garage, wait, and book a retest. Here the test lane and the workshop are the same building, so it is one visit and the retest is free.

Ring 01744 808586 with your registration and we will price it before you set off.

Which part of Wigan are you closest to?

The south and west of the borough — Pemberton, Winstanley, Orrell, Worsley Mesnes, Goose Green, Hawkley Hall and Marus Bridge. From there it is a straight run down the A49 or the B5205.

Bryn and Ashton-in-Makerfield are closer still, and Billinge and Garswood are practically on the way.

From Leigh, Atherton, Tyldesley or Golborne you are heading a long way west across the borough. Call 01744 808586 and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth it.

Why do so many cars fail on suspension?

Because springs and bushes fail gradually, so nothing ever feels wrong until the tester puts the car in the air. Suspension and steering sit just behind brakes and tyres in the failure tables.

Coil springs go at the bottom coil, where salt and standing water sit against the metal. Bushes perish and let the arm move. Neither changes how the car drives enough for you to notice, but both show up instantly with the wheels off the ground.

We replace springs, bushes, arms and drop links here, and the retest is free. See suspension repairs or call 01744 808586.

Are corroded coil springs an MOT failure?

Yes when the corrosion is deep enough to weaken the spring, and automatically once it has cracked or snapped. Surface rust alone is usually recorded as an advisory.

They are judged by the tester’s inspection rather than measured, which is why a heavily pitted spring can pass one year and fail the next with nothing having visibly changed.

Two things worth knowing: springs are replaced in pairs so the car sits level, and a snapped one can slice the tyre next to it. If yours were flagged last year, deal with them before test day. Call 01744 808586.

Can I drive my car if it fails its MOT?

Only if your existing certificate is still in date and nothing was recorded as dangerous. A major defect with a valid certificate means you may drive away for repair; a dangerous one means the car does not move.

The penalties are very different. No valid MOT is a fine of up to £1,000. Driving in a dangerous condition is up to £2,500, three penalty points and a possible ban — and the tester has already recorded the word dangerous.

Fail here and it never arises: the car goes onto a ramp and the retest costs nothing. See failed MOT — can I drive? or call 01744 808586.

Can you drive without an MOT?

No, apart from driving to a pre-booked test or to repairs arranged after a failure. Anything else risks a fine of up to £1,000 and an insurer entitled to treat the policy as void.

There is no grace period at all — the certificate expires at midnight on the date shown, and ANPR cameras check your registration against the MOT database automatically.

Book it before you drive it. Call 01744 808586 and we will find the next slot.

Are MOT retests free?

Free here, because we carry out the repair ourselves rather than handing the car on. It comes off the test, onto one of our ramps, and back through at no further charge.

Most test-only centres charge again once the vehicle has left the premises. That is where a cheap headline test quietly turns into an expensive one, and it rarely appears in the price comparison.

More on MOT retest rules, or call 01744 808586.

Can a car fail its MOT for a chipped windscreen?

Yes — over 10mm in the driver’s line of sight, or over 40mm anywhere else the wipers sweep. Zone A is a 290mm band centred on the steering wheel.

Chips outside those zones usually pass, but water gets in, freezes and spreads them. A chip that scraped through last year is often this year’s failure.

A repair is far cheaper than a screen and many insurers cover it with no excess. Send a photo and your registration on WhatsApp and we will tell you which you are looking at. Call 01744 808586.

Do you collect cars from Wigan?

Often yes, but agree it when you book rather than assume it. Eight miles each way ties a driver up for the best part of an hour, so it depends on the day and how full the workshop is.

The alternative costs nothing to arrange: drop the car before work and collect on the way home. We hold it on site all day at no charge.

If the car is not safe to drive, say so on the phone — that is the situation where collection matters most. Call 01744 808586.

Can I get a Saturday MOT?

Yes — Saturday mornings, 9am to 12:30pm. For anyone coming down the A49 from Wigan that keeps the test out of the working week entirely, and the road is a good deal quieter than it is on a weekday morning.

Worth planning for: Saturday is a half day. Bulbs, wipers and tyres we will normally sort on the spot, but a bigger repair may need to carry over to Monday. If the car is already borderline, book a weekday and give us the full day.

Saturday slots go first. Book online or call 01744 808586.

Can I wait while the MOT is done?

Yes, and most people driving down from Wigan do — the test takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour. Reception has a tea and coffee machine and a vending machine, so it is not an hour spent staring at a wall.

If it fails we tell you exactly what failed, what it costs and how long it takes before anything is started, so you can decide there and then whether to wait or leave it with us.

St Helens town centre is a few minutes on foot if you would rather walk. Tell us which you prefer when you book. Call 01744 808586.

Can I have the MOT and a service done together?

Yes, and from eight miles away it is much the most sensible way to do it — one trip covering both rather than making the journey twice inside a fortnight.

The service covers what the MOT deliberately ignores: oil and filters, fluid levels, the engine bay, and the parts that wear out gradually rather than fail outright on a test day.

Send us the registration and we will price the pair together. Call 01744 808586 or book online.

How early can I have it tested?

Up to one calendar month minus a day before it expires, and the renewal date does not move. A certificate running out on 14 June can be tested from 15 May and will still expire on 14 June next year.

Leave it later and you simply lose those days. Booking early also means you choose the slot instead of taking whatever is left.

Not sure of your date? Ring 01744 808586 and we will check it while you are on the phone.

What should I check before I set off?

Bring the car and the keys, and nothing else — you do not need the V5C or the old certificate. Everything the tester needs is already on the DVSA system against your registration.

Five minutes before you leave Wigan: every bulb front and back, screenwash topped up, wipers not smearing, and the boot and footwells cleared so the tester can reach the belts and lift the floor.

Then brake firmly a few times on a clear road to scrub the discs. That handful of checks removes most of the avoidable failures. Call 01744 808586 if anything is worrying you.
