The order the tester works in
It is a fixed list against a published standard, not a view on how the car drives. That is why a car that feels perfect can still fail on something you would never have noticed.
Before it movesNumber plates, every exterior lamp, its colour and its aim, mirrors, wipers and washers, the windscreen, tyres and tread, doors and the body for corrosion.
InsideSeat belts and mountings, seats, the horn, the driver’s view, and any warning lamp still lit that should have gone out.
On the rampSuspension arms, springs, bushes and joints, steering play, brake pipes and hoses, exhaust, fuel system and structure.

Lights and headlamp aim: the cheapest failure on the list
Lighting fails more MOTs than anything else, and it is almost always the cheapest thing on the car. There are more than twenty testable lamps and a single blown bulb is a failure.
Aim is the part people do not expect, because it is measured, not judged. The beam is projected onto a board and the cut-off line has to fall inside a defined box. Too high and you dazzle oncoming traffic; too low and you cannot see. Both fail.
It drifts without anything obvious happening. A pothole on the A58, a bulb reseated slightly differently, a heavy load in the boot, or a headlamp unit replaced after a knock will all shift it, and there is no way to tell from the driving seat.
LEDs and xenons are less forgiving. A sharper, brighter cut-off means a beam fractionally too high dazzles far more than an old halogen ever did. Aftermarket LED bulbs pushed into a housing designed for halogen are a common failure — the pattern scatters and the cut-off softens. Factory xenons must also have working self-levelling, and a failed leveller fails the car.
Five minutes before you come: turn everything on, walk round, and get someone to press the brake pedal while you watch. Do not forget the number plate lamp, the reversing light and the rear fog — the three nobody checks.

Tyres, and the reason they wear unevenly
The limit is 1.6mm across the centre three-quarters of the tread, all the way round, taken at the worst point. A tyre reading 3mm where you can see it can sit under the limit where you cannot.
How it wears tells you what is wrong. Both edges gone means the pressures have been low. The middle gone means they have been too high. One edge only means the tracking is out — and around Prescot that usually traces back to a kerb or a pothole on the A58.
Age counts as well as depth. Rubber hardens and crazes whether the car is used or not, so a five-year-old tyre with plenty of tread can still fail on perishing in the sidewall.
Two minutes with a 20p: push it into the groove at the inner edge, the middle and the outer edge of all four. If the coin’s outer band shows anywhere, that tyre is at or under the limit.

Yes — over 10mm in the driver’s line of sight, or over 40mm anywhere else the wipers sweep. Zone A is a 290mm band centred on the steering wheel.
Chips outside those zones usually pass, but water gets in, freezes and spreads them, so one that scraped through last year is often this year’s failure.
