Mobile Mechanic Warrington

We come to the car rather than the other way round — Birchwood, Westbrook, Stockton Heath, Great Sankey, Woolston, Latchford and the rest of Warrington. Diagnostics, batteries, brakes, servicing and starting problems finished where the car is parked, priced before we set off. The jobs that genuinely need a ramp we say so about, and finish at the workshop instead.

Mobile mechanic Warrington · How it works

The mechanic who meets you at work, not just at home

Warrington is full of people who park at eight and do not move again until five — Birchwood Park, Lingley Mere, the Omega sites, Gemini, the town centre offices. That is close to ideal for mobile work, because the car is stationary for eight hours in a place we can reach, and you do not lose a morning sitting in a waiting room.

You tell us the postcode it is parked at, the registration and what it is doing. We tell you whether it is a job that finishes there, roughly when we can be with you, and what it should cost — before anyone sets off, not after we arrive.

The honest limit is space and equipment. Anything that needs the car in the air on a ramp, or a machine that does not travel, is finished at the workshop on Boundary Road instead. We would rather tell you that on the phone than turn up and find out together.

Warrington is about eight miles from us, so it is a short run rather than a special journey. If the car genuinely cannot be driven, recovery brings it in and the same team repairs it.

Mobile mechanic Warrington · Being straight about it

What a mobile mechanic can and cannot do

What finishes where you park. Diagnostics and fault code reading, batteries, alternators and starters, brake pads and discs, servicing and oil changes, most electrical faults, bulbs, wipers and a car that will not start. If the job needs hand tools, a jack and axle stands, and a socket somewhere to work from, it is a mobile job.

What needs the ramp. Clutches, gearboxes, cambelts and wet belts, exhaust and welding work, anything needing the car properly in the air, and anything where a wheel alignment has to follow. Those are workshop jobs and we will tell you so rather than start one badly at the kerb.

What needs a test lane. MOTs cannot be done at the roadside — they need an approved test station with rollers, a beam tester and an emissions analyser. Ours is in St Helens, or see MOT testing for Warrington drivers.

Where we cannot work at all. A live carriageway, a motorway hard shoulder, or anywhere a vehicle is not safe to stand beside. That is not us being difficult — it is the one situation where the right call is the police or National Highways, not a mechanic.

Hours, honestly. This is not a twenty-four-hour service and we will not pretend otherwise. The workshop runs Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm and Saturday morning, and mobile visits happen inside that. If you need a vehicle moving outside those hours, recovery is the part of us that answers around the clock.

Mobile mechanic Warrington · How a visit runs

Four steps, and you get the price at step two

No callback queue, no diagnosis fee you find out about afterwards.

  1. Tell us the postcode, the reg and the symptom

Where the car is standing matters as much as what is wrong with it. A works car park, a driveway and a multi-storey are three different jobs, and the registration tells us what we will be working on before we load the van.

  2. You get a price and a realistic time

Not a callback. You are told what it should cost and whether it is today or tomorrow, so you can make arrangements either way rather than waiting in.

  3. We come to the car and do the work there

Parts on the van for the common jobs, ordered in for the rest. You do not need to be standing next to us, as long as we can get to the car and you are contactable.

  4. If it needs the workshop, we say so

Some faults only show themselves once the car is up in the air. If that happens you get told there and then, with what it means, rather than a bigger bill appearing at the end.

Mobile mechanic Warrington · What we do

Mobile mechanic Warrington: the jobs we finish where you park

Six that cover most of what we get called out for.

Car will not start

The most common call by a long way, and it is usually the battery, the starter or the charging system rather than anything dramatic. Tested rather than guessed — see car will not start in Warrington.

Battery testing and fitting

Tested under load first, because a battery that reads fine at rest can still be finished. Fitted where the car is, with coding where the car needs it. See mobile battery fitting.

Diagnostics and fault codes

Every module read and live data watched, not just the one code an app gives you. The fault gets named before a part gets quoted — see diagnostics.

Brakes: pads and discs

A job that suits a car park well. Pads, discs and fluid checked, and you are told what is actually worn rather than sold a full set by default. See brake repairs.

Servicing and oil changes

A full or interim service done where the car sits, with the used oil taken away. Stamped and recorded the same as workshop work — see servicing.

Electrical faults

Lights, sensors, wiring, parasitic drains and the things that only misbehave sometimes. See auto electrical work.

The list stops where the ramp starts. A clutch, a cambelt, exhaust welding or anything that has to be properly in the air is a workshop job, and starting one at the kerb does the customer no favours at all.

The reason is access rather than skill. A clutch means the gearbox coming out, which needs a two-post lift and a transmission jack. A cambelt needs the engine locked with the car steady and the area clean. Welding needs the car up and the ground around it made safe. None of that improves by being attempted on a driveway with a trolley jack.

When that is the answer you hear it on the phone rather than after we have arrived and started. The car comes to Boundary Road, the same people finish it, and the work carries the same 12 months’ warranty on parts. If it will not drive there under its own power, recovery collects it and brings it in.

Some jobs only work with the car properly in the air. Those come to the workshop rather than being started at the kerb.

Mobile mechanic Warrington · What it costs

Why you get the price before we set off

Three things decide it, and none of them is a surprise at the end.

What the job actually is. A battery is a different afternoon to a set of discs and pads. The registration tells us which parts your car takes, so the figure you get is for your car rather than a national average for something similar.

Whether it needs diagnosis first. If you already know what is wrong, we price the repair. If the symptom could be three different things, the honest answer is that testing comes first and you are told what that involves before it starts, not billed for it afterwards.

Where the car is standing. A driveway or an open works car park is straightforward. A multi-storey with a height restriction, a tight terraced street, or somewhere with no safe space alongside the car changes what we can do and how long it takes.

What we will not do is quote a repair blind down the phone and then revise it once we are standing next to the car. That is the complaint people have about mobile mechanics more than any other, and it is entirely avoidable.

If the price has to change because the fault turns out to be something other than what was described, you hear it at the car, before the work happens, with the reason. You decide what happens next. Sometimes that means going ahead, sometimes it means the job wants the workshop instead, and occasionally it means the sensible answer is not to spend the money on that car at all — we will say so.

Mobile mechanic Warrington · Did you know

Nobody should be working on your car on the M62 hard shoulder

Warrington sits inside a ring of fast road — the M62 at junctions 8, 9 and 11, the M6 at 20 and 21, and the M56 south of the river. It is the one place where the answer is not a mobile mechanic. A hard shoulder or a live lane is not a place to stand next to a car, let alone work on one, and no repair is worth the risk.

If you stop on a motorway, get out of the nearside doors, get behind the barrier, and ring 999 or National Highways on 0300 123 5000 before you ring a garage. Once the vehicle is somewhere safe we can look at it, or recover it and repair it back at the workshop. That order matters more than the repair does.

Not sure we can do it where you are parked?

Send us the postcode and a photo of where the car is standing if you can. We will tell you honestly whether it is a job that finishes there, or one that wants the workshop.

Tell us where the car is and what it is doing

Three things get you a useful answer in one call: the postcode the car is parked at, the registration, and what it is actually doing. If it will not start, say what happens when you turn the key — nothing at all, a click, or it turns over and will not fire. Those are three different faults.

We are Fastlane Autocare, 232–254 Boundary Road, St Helens, WA10 2PZ, about eight miles from Warrington. Call 01744 808586. Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 12:30pm.

Mobile work runs alongside the workshop — repairs, MOT testing and everything else under one roof. More on our about us page.

Mobile mechanic Warrington · FAQs

Everything Warrington drivers ask before they ring

Twenty questions, answered properly rather than in one line.

How much does a mobile mechanic cost in Warrington?

It depends on the job and whether it needs diagnosing first, and you get the figure before anyone sets off rather than when we arrive.

Three things move it. What the work actually is, because a battery and a set of discs and pads are different afternoons. Whether the fault needs finding first — if the symptom could be three things, testing comes before a repair price and you are told that up front. And where the car is standing, because a multi-storey with a height restriction or a tight terraced street is not the same as an open car park. Give us the registration and the postcode on the phone and you get a real number for your car. There is more on what a mobile mechanic costs.

Do you work weekends or late at night in Warrington?

Mobile visits run inside workshop hours — Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm and Saturday morning. We are not a twenty-four-hour mobile service and we will not pretend to be one.

It is worth being straight about, because plenty of sites imply otherwise and then nobody answers at nine at night. What does run around the clock is recovery — ring the same number at any hour and the recovery line diverts, so a vehicle that is stuck somewhere it should not be gets moved. The repair then happens the next working day, because that needs the workshop, the parts counter and daylight. You will be told which of those two you are dealing with when you ring rather than the following morning.

Can you come out today?

Often, and you will be told honestly if not. What decides it is where you are, what the job is, and what is already booked in that day.

The most useful thing you can do is ring early and lead with the postcode and the symptom rather than asking whether we are free. A battery in a Birchwood car park is a different proposition to a diagnostic job in a multi-storey, and we can usually tell you within a minute whether today is realistic. If it is not, you get told tomorrow rather than being put in a callback queue and left wondering. Ring 01744 808586 and tell us where the car is.

My car will not start in a Warrington car park - can you help?

Usually yes, and it is the single most common reason people ring. It is normally the battery, the starter or the charging system rather than anything serious.

What you tell us about the moment you turn the key matters more than anything else. Nothing at all, not even a dashboard light, points at the battery or a connection. A single loud click usually means the starter solenoid is getting power but the motor is not turning. Turning over steadily without firing is a fuel, spark or immobiliser problem and a completely different job. Say which of those three it is when you ring and we can bring the right thing first time. See car will not start in Warrington.

Will you come to my house, or only to workplaces?

Either. A driveway is the easiest job we get, and a works car park is close behind because the car sits still all day.

What we need is safe access to the car and enough room to work beside it. A driveway, an open car park, a quiet residential street and most business park bays are all fine. Where it gets harder is a multi-storey with a low ceiling, a tight terraced street with cars nose to tail, or a spot where opening a door means standing in traffic. None of those is automatically a no — tell us and we will say whether it works. You do not need to stand next to us while we work, as long as we can reach the car and get hold of you.

Do you do mobile diagnostics, or just repairs?

Both. Diagnostics is one of the most useful things to do at the roadside, because the fault is often there in front of you and the car does not need to move to find it.

A proper diagnostic is more than reading one code. Every module gets read, stored and pending codes both, and then live data gets watched while the car does whatever it is doing wrong — which is the part a plug-in app from a shop cannot do. That is how you tell a failing sensor from a wiring fault that makes a good sensor look bad, and it is the difference between replacing the right part once and the wrong part twice. See diagnostics, or ring 01744 808586 with the symptom.

Can you fit a battery at my car in Warrington?

Yes, and it is one of the most common call-outs. The battery gets tested under load first, because one that reads fine at rest can still be finished.

A resting voltage reading tells you very little. What matters is what the battery does when the starter asks it for a few hundred amps, and a load test shows that in seconds. It is also worth checking the charging side at the same time, because a failing alternator will destroy a brand new battery just as happily as it finished the old one. Many modern cars need the new battery registering to the car afterwards or it never charges correctly, and that gets done at the same visit. See mobile battery fitting.

Can you do brakes at the roadside?

Yes, pads and discs are a good mobile job on most cars. What we will not do is start one somewhere it is not safe to have the car on a jack.

Brakes need the wheel off, the car supported properly on axle stands and level, solid ground under it. An open car park or a driveway is fine. A slope, a soft verge or a spot where we would be working with our backs to moving traffic is not, and that is a judgement made when we arrive rather than argued about. We will also tell you what is actually worn rather than replacing everything as a default — discs often have life left when pads do not. See brake repairs.

Can you service my car while it is parked at work?

Yes, and it is one of the better uses of a mobile mechanic. The car is stationary for eight hours anyway, so the service costs you no time at all.

A full or interim service happens exactly as it would in the workshop: oil and filter, the other filters as the schedule requires, fluid levels, brakes and tyres inspected and reported, and the service record stamped or the digital record updated. Used oil and old filters leave with us rather than being left in your car park. What cannot be done at the kerb is anything needing the car in the air for a long period — if the inspection turns up something like that, you get told what it is and it gets booked into the workshop. See servicing.

Are you a trusted mobile mechanic, or just someone with a van?

We are a garage first. The mobile work runs out of a DVSA-approved test station and workshop on Boundary Road, with the same technicians and the same warranty on parts.

It is a fair question, because mobile mechanics are easy to set up as and hard to check up on. The practical difference is what happens when the job turns out to be bigger than a mobile job. Someone working alone out of a van has to hand you back to another business at that point. Here the car comes to the workshop, the same people finish it, and if it will not drive there we recover it ourselves. Parts we fit carry 12 months’ warranty either way. More on our about us page.

Can you do an MOT at my house or workplace?

No, and nobody legally can. An MOT needs an approved test station with brake rollers, a headlamp beam tester and an emissions analyser, and none of those travel.

It is worth knowing, because it is one of the few things a mobile mechanic genuinely cannot offer, and anyone saying otherwise is not doing an MOT. What we can do is everything around it: check the car over before the test so you are not paying for a retest, carry out the repairs, and test it at our own station in St Helens. If your test is close and you would rather find the problems while there is still time to fix them, see our pre-MOT check, or MOT testing for Warrington drivers.

What jobs need the workshop rather than a call-out?

Anything needing the car properly in the air for a long stretch, or a machine that does not travel: clutches, gearboxes, cambelts and wet belts, exhaust welding, wheel alignment and MOTs.

The limit is equipment rather than skill. A clutch means the gearbox coming out, which needs a ramp and a transmission jack. A cambelt needs the engine locked in a clean, controlled space. Welding needs the car up and the area made safe. Alignment needs a rig and a level floor. Starting any of those at a kerb would do the customer no favours, so we say no on the phone rather than halfway through. The car comes to Boundary Road instead and the same team finishes it. See car repairs.

Do you cover Birchwood, Stockton Heath and the business parks?

Yes. Birchwood, Westbrook, Great Sankey, Penketh, Stockton Heath, Grappenhall, Latchford, Woolston, Padgate, Orford, Culcheth and Lymm, plus the town centre and the Omega and Lingley Mere sites.

The business parks are where mobile work makes most sense, because the car is parked from eight until five in a place with room to work beside it. Residential Warrington is equally straightforward as long as the car is not wedged nose to tail on a narrow terraced street. The only places that cause real difficulty are multi-storeys with height restrictions and anywhere we would be working with our backs to moving traffic. If you are not sure whether your spot works, send a photo of it — that answers it faster than describing it.

Do you charge a call-out fee on top of the job?

You get one figure that covers the visit and the work, given before we set off. What we do not do is quote a repair price and then add a separate call-out charge at the end.

The reason people ask is that a hidden call-out fee is the classic complaint about mobile mechanics, and it is a fair thing to check. Our approach is that the number you are told on the phone is the number, unless the fault turns out to be something different from what was described — and in that case you hear about it while we are standing next to the car, not afterwards. If the diagnosis changes the job, you decide what happens next. Ring 01744 808586 with the registration and postcode for a real figure.

Do you do mobile auto electrical work?

Yes. Electrical faults are well suited to a call-out, because most of them need testing on the car rather than a ramp.

Batteries, alternators, starters, lighting, sensors, wiring damage and parasitic drains that flatten a battery overnight are all roadside work. A parasitic drain in particular is better diagnosed where the car normally sits, because that is where it happens. What needs the workshop is anything requiring the car in the air for a long period to reach a loom, or bodywork coming off. We will tell you which yours is once we have seen it. See auto electrical work.

Is a mobile mechanic cheaper than a garage?

Not automatically, and anyone promising it is guessing. What it reliably saves you is time, and on the jobs that suit it the total cost is usually close.

The parts cost the same wherever they are fitted, and the labour is the same work by the same technicians. Where mobile genuinely wins is that you do not lose half a day, you do not need a lift home or a courtesy car, and there is no recovery bill for a car that would not have made it to a workshop. Where a workshop wins is on anything needing a ramp, because doing it properly is quicker there. We will tell you which way round your job falls rather than pushing you toward whichever suits us. See mobile mechanic costs.

What do you need to know when I ring?

Three things: the postcode the car is parked at, the registration, and what it is actually doing. Those decide what we bring and how quickly.

The postcode tells us where we are going and, just as importantly, what kind of space it is. The registration tells us the exact engine and which parts your car takes, so the price you get is for your car rather than something similar. And the symptom in plain words — what happens when you turn the key, when the noise appears, whether a warning light is on — is what points at the fault. You do not need to know what is wrong with it. Describing it accurately is worth more than a guess at the cause. Ring 01744 808586.

Can you work on a car in a multi-storey car park?

Sometimes. Height restrictions are the usual obstacle, because a van with a roof rack does not get in, and low ceilings make some jobs impossible.

It is worth ringing rather than assuming either way. Plenty of multi-storeys are fine for a battery, a diagnostic or a bulb, where nothing needs to go far above the roofline. What does not work is anywhere with no room alongside the car, poor lighting and no ventilation for a job that runs the engine. If your car lives in one and the job turns out not to suit it, the usual answer is to move the car out to a ground-level bay for the visit, or bring it to the workshop. Tell us the car park and we will know.

Do you guarantee the work you do at the roadside?

Yes. Parts we fit carry 12 months’ warranty whether they went on in a car park or on a ramp, and the workshop stands behind the work either way.

That is the practical argument for using a garage that also goes mobile rather than a van on its own. If something we fitted fails, there is a business with a workshop, a test station and a phone number that answers to put it right, not a sole trader who may have moved on. It also means a mobile job that turns out to need more can be carried straight into the workshop instead of becoming your problem to rebook elsewhere. More on our about us page, or ring 01744 808586.

Do you do mobile work for vans and small fleets in Warrington?

Yes, and vans are often the best case for it, because time off the road is the real cost rather than the repair itself.

A van that has to be driven to a workshop and left there is a day of work gone. A van seen where it parks overnight, or at the yard between jobs, often is not. Servicing, brakes, batteries, diagnostics and electrical faults all suit that pattern. Anything needing a ramp still comes in, but it can be planned around your week rather than sprung on it. If you run more than one vehicle it is worth talking about scheduling them together — see fleet repairs.
