Mobile mechanic Runcorn · What you get told first

A price you can weigh up before you say yes to anything

Crossing the river to work already costs Runcorn drivers something every day, so an unplanned repair bill needs to be exact, not a guess. Send the registration and the symptoms and we'll confirm the price and the arrival time before we set off. We repair it where it stands when we can, and take it to our own workshop when the job needs a ramp.

A real person, not a queue

Give us the number plate. We’ll give you a straight figure.

Nothing to fill in, nobody ringing you back next week, no “from” price that turns into something else. Put the registration in, say what the car is doing, hit send. WhatsApp opens with the message already typed, and it lands with the workshop rather than an inbox somewhere else.

  • ✓We look up when the MOT runs out so you are not hunting for the certificate.
  • ✓A figure built round your exact car, taken from the plate rather than a rough band.
  • ✓The soonest slot we can hold for you, Saturday mornings included.
  • ✓Read and answered by the people in the bays. No call centre anywhere in it.

Mobile mechanic Runcorn · Where the car is standing

Mobile mechanic Runcorn: the drive, the kerb, or the works car park

Runcorn is really two towns stitched together, and the difference decides how a job gets done.

North of the expressways, the Old Town streets around Halton Road and Weston were built long before anyone owned two cars, so the vehicle is at the kerb, tight between neighbours, and every job has to be done without blocking anybody in. Out at Beechwood, Sandymoor, Castlefields and Palacefields it is the opposite — block-paved drives, a garage, sometimes room to open both doors properly. Tell us which of those you are, and we load up for it.

Fastlane Autocare mobile mechanic working on a car at a customer address in Runcorn

Kerbside work is not a compromise, it is just work that needs planning. Axle stands want a firm, level footing, so a spreader board goes down where the surface is soft or cambered, and on a narrow terraced street we work from the pavement side wherever the job allows it. Nothing gets left half apart. If something turns up that genuinely cannot be finished at the kerb, the car goes to Boundary Road on our own recovery vehicle and comes back to you sorted, rather than being handed back to you as your problem.

The estates are quicker, and that shows in what we can take on there. A brake job, a full service, a battery and charging test, an air conditioning fault or a diagnostic session all fit comfortably on a drive. Around the industrial estates it changes again: at Astmoor, Whitehouse and Preston Brook the car or van is normally stood still from first thing until home time, which is exactly the window a job like a service wants. See what a scheduled service covers on our car servicing page, or ring 01744 808586 and we will tell you on the call whether your address suits it.

Mobile mechanic Runcorn · Figures worth carrying around

Six measurements that settle most arguments

None of these are opinions. They are the numbers we take a reading of before telling you anything.

0mmof friction material left means the pads are done; they start life at 10–12mm
0.0Vacross the terminals on a rested battery in good order; anything under 12.4V is simply flat
0.0Vis the top of the range a working charging system holds once the engine is running
0.0mmis the point a tyre becomes illegal, though the wet grip has mostly gone by 3mm
0mAis roughly all a locked, sleeping car should still be pulling overnight
0is added on top when a bill goes across 3, 4 or 6 monthly payments

Six jobs that never need the car to move

All six of these get completed at your address. Anything heavier is collected, done on a lift and brought back.

Mobile mechanic Runcorn - diagnostic scan being run on a car at a customer address

Warning lights and diagnostics

Stored codes, live sensor readings and a drive if the fault only shows up moving. A code names a circuit, never a broken part, so the reading comes before anybody orders anything.

Batteries and charging

Load tested first, and the alternator output checked in the same visit. From behind the wheel a tired battery and a failing alternator feel like the same fault, and only one of them is cured by a new battery.

Electrical faults

Lighting, sensors, corroded earths and the flat-every-Monday battery drain that only appears when the car has been stood. Chasing those takes patience, which is easier on your drive than in a booked bay.

Picked up a nail on the expressway slip road?

Read the numbers off the sidewall, send them with your postcode, and you get a price and a slot back. The balancer comes with the tyre, so the wheel is finished rather than roughly on. If the timing is awkward on the budget there is pay monthly tyres and tyre finance.

Mobile mechanic Runcorn · The money side

What you will actually be asked to pay

Three figures, kept apart from each other, agreed before anything is ordered: coming out, the labour, the parts.

Keeping them separate is the whole point. A single lump sum is impossible to argue with because you cannot see what is inside it — whether the hours are heavy, whether the component is a dear one, or whether something else has been buried in there. Split into three, you can look at each line and take a view on it while you still have the option of walking away.

Labour is set against the job in front of us rather than a meter. A rusted-in caliper bolt or a wheel that fights coming off costs us the afternoon, not you the difference. The only thing that shifts an agreed number is discovering the fault is genuinely a different one, and when that happens the work stops, the phone comes out and you hear the new figure before anything else is touched.

Fastlane Autocare workshop on Boundary Road, the garage behind the mobile mechanic Runcorn service

On parts you get the choice wherever a real choice exists. There are components where the manufacturer’s own part is honestly the right call and we will tell you that; on plenty of others a good aftermarket equivalent does an identical job for a lot less money. You hear which is which and you pick, instead of one anonymous total arriving with the decision already made.

If paying it in a single hit is the sticking point, raise it in the first conversation rather than at the end — spreading a Runcorn repair over three, four or six months at 0% is easy enough, but it has to be set up before the invoice is settled, not afterwards. For a job-by-job breakdown of the sums involved, how much a mobile mechanic costs works through it properly.

Want the number before you agree to anything?

Give us the car, what it is doing, and whether it will be on a drive, at a kerb or in a works car park. Three figures come back before a slot is held.

Mobile mechanic Runcorn · When it will not go

If your car will not start in Runcorn

No need to work out the fault. Just say what the car did the moment you turned the key.

Mobile mechanic Runcorn - no-start fault being tested on a car outside a customer's house

That one sentence is genuinely all we want from you on the phone. We will ask you what noise it made, whether the dashboard lit up and then faded, whether anything at all moved, and whether it has done it before or this is the first time. None of that is a test you can fail — it just decides what gets loaded before anyone sets off, because a car that is silent and a car that is spinning over need completely different things brought to them.

We will also ask how the car has been used lately. Runcorn does a lot of very short journeys, and a battery that only ever gets a few minutes at a time never reaches a full charge, which is why the first properly cold morning of the year is far and away our busiest for this. If it turns out to be the battery, we test it, replace it and code the new one to the car where the vehicle needs that, all on the spot. Below are the six versions of this we hear most, and what tends to be behind each one.

The key turns and the car ignores you

No lights, no noise, nothing moving. This is nearly always about power arriving rather than the engine itself, so we test the battery, the terminals, the earths and the main feeds first.

One heavy knock, then that is your lot

The current is getting through but the starter is not turning with it. We check what voltage is actually reaching the starter under load before anybody condemns the part.

Chattering away, over and over

Rapid clicking usually means there is just enough charge to pull the solenoid in and not enough to spin the motor. We test the battery under load and check what the alternator has been putting back.

Spinning over all day without catching

The starter is doing its job, so the missing piece is fuel, a spark or timing. We scan it, look at live readings while it cranks, and work out which of the three has gone.

It catches for a second, then drops dead

Fuelling or a security system that is not recognising the key are the usual two. Both are traceable at your address without the car going anywhere.

Jump leads work, the next morning does not

Something is quietly emptying the battery while the car sleeps. We measure the standing drain and then pull fuses one at a time until the circuit responsible gives itself away.

Whichever of those it is, tell us over the phone and we will bring the kit for it. There is more detail on what to do when your car will not start in Runcorn, or ring 01744 808586 and describe it to us.

Mobile mechanic Runcorn · Worth knowing

A tolled commute quietly changes what your car needs

Drivers who cross the river twice a day tend to settle into one fixed route and stick to it, and that steady pattern of the same miles at the same speed is actually kind to an engine. What it is hard on is everything that wears by distance: tyres, brake discs, suspension bushes and cambelts all arrive at their limit sooner than the calendar suggests.

The opposite is true for anyone whose driving is Old Town to the shops and back — barely any distance at all, but the engine never fully warms, moisture stays in the oil and a diesel particulate filter never gets hot enough to clean itself out. Two very different cars, two very different service lives, and mileage alone tells you almost nothing about which one you are running.

Mobile mechanic Runcorn · Servicing and brakes

Servicing and brakes while the car is stood at work anyway

The two jobs everyone delays are the two that suit a works car park best.

A service is rarely put off because anybody thinks it does not matter. It gets put off because booking it means losing a day, and there is never a spare one. If your car spends eight hours a day parked at Astmoor, Whitehouse, Preston Brook or Manor Park doing nothing, that day already exists — you just have to let us use it. You walk in at nine and drive home in a serviced car.

Mobile mechanic Runcorn - car being serviced in a workplace car park

It is a full service, not a shortened version of one. The oil goes in to the specification your engine actually calls for rather than a general-purpose grade, the oil filter is changed every time, and the air, pollen and fuel filters are done where the schedule says they are due. After that come the levels, the tyre condition and pressures, the lights, the wipers and anything showing early wear. The service book is stamped and you get told what was found, including the things that are fine for now but worth watching.

Cars still inside their manufacturer warranty are safe here. Under the block exemption rules, a warranty stays valid as long as the car is serviced to the maker’s own schedule with parts that meet the maker’s specification — who does the work is not the deciding factor. You are not obliged to keep going back to a franchised dealer to hold on to your cover.

Brakes behave the same way. Pads and discs are ordinary work for a drive or a car park: measured with a gauge, replaced, torqued to the correct figure and bedded in properly before we leave. Electronic parking brakes are wound back through the car’s own service mode rather than forced open. You also get the remaining thickness in millimetres, so the next time somebody tells you the brakes are low you have a number to compare it with. See brake pads and discs.

Mobile mechanic Runcorn · Work that wants a lift

The jobs that belong on a ramp, and what happens to them

Some work has to have the weight off the wheels. That is not a refusal — it is a collection.

Clutches and flywheels, timing belts and wet belts, gearbox internals, welding, exhaust sections and anything needing the suspension unloaded all want a proper lift underneath them. An MOT does too, because a test can only legally be carried out at a DVSA-approved test centre, so anyone describing a mobile MOT is describing something that is not an MOT.

Our own workshop and test centre are at Boundary Road, and the car is collected on our own recovery vehicle, done there and returned to you, with the collection treated as part of the job rather than something you have to organise. That matters more in the Old Town than most places: if you have no off-street parking, a half-finished car outside the house is not a small inconvenience. Have a look at clutch repair, gearbox repairs, exhaust repairs and timing belt replacement.

Welding, bodywork, panel repair and AdBlue system faults are all done in house rather than sent elsewhere, so it is worth asking instead of assuming they are somebody else’s department — AdBlue diagnostics and repair in Runcorn covers that one. Vans and company vehicles running out of the Runcorn estates are handled through our fleet work.

Mobile mechanic Runcorn · Getting a slot

Can somebody get out to you today?

Usually, yes. What decides it is the part, not the postcode.

Reaching you is rarely the thing holding a job up. The question is whether what your car needs is already on board.

Usually the same day

Batteries, punctures, tyres, no-starts, warning lights and most electrical faults. Ring while the morning is still young and we can normally be with you before the end of the day.

Usually the next day

Brakes, servicing, and anything where the component has to be ordered against your registration. Turning up tomorrow with the correct part beats turning up today with a near enough one.

Booked in at the workshop

Clutches, belts, gearboxes, welding and MOTs. These get a proper slot at Boundary Road, and we collect the car and bring it back as part of the price.

What you will not get is a four-hour window and a hope. If we are running late you hear about it from us first. Workshop and callout hours are Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 12:30pm, and Saturday morning is the busiest few hours of the week, so it fills up early. Ring 01744 808586 to see what is left.

Mobile mechanic Runcorn · Payment Assist

Paying for a repair nobody had budgeted for

Any job on this page can be split across 3, 4 or 6 months with nothing added for interest. Up to £1,000 the check is a soft one, so finding out where you stand leaves no mark on your credit file.

Repair cost £1,000

Around £250 per month over 4 months

Mobile mechanic Runcorn · Agreed in advance

Why the price is agreed before we set off

Nobody has ever made a calm decision about money while stood next to their own car with the bonnet up.

Most people have had that afternoon at some point. Somebody looks the car over, tells you roughly what you had already worked out for yourself, and then the figure appears — with the car in pieces, you on the pavement, and no realistic way of saying you would rather think about it. It is a bad position to put anyone in, and it is not one we want a customer of ours to be standing in.

Settling it beforehand is better for both sides of the conversation. You get the number before anything happens to the car, and you can say no at no cost. We get to know exactly what the job is, which means the right parts are loaded and enough time is set aside to finish it in a single visit rather than a return trip.

When the fault is genuinely unknown, the diagnosis is priced separately and on its own. You are paying to find out what is actually wrong — whether that ends up being a blocked particulate filter, carbon build-up in the inlet, a tired alternator or something a great deal cheaper — and then the decision about what happens next is yours to make with the facts in front of you.

Mobile mechanic Runcorn · Areas we cover

Where we come out to around Runcorn

The same service across Halton and out into Cheshire and Merseyside on both sides of the water.

Inside Runcorn itself there is no part of the town we treat differently. Halton Village, Halton Brook, Halton Lodge, Weston, Weston Point, Higher Runcorn, the Old Town, Castlefields, Palacefields, Brookvale, Murdishaw, Beechwood, Sandymoor, Windmill Hill and Preston Brook are all ordinary callouts, along with the Astmoor, Whitehouse and Manor Park estates. Immediately over the water there is Widnes, and inland Frodsham and Northwich.

Mobile mechanic Runcorn · Where we end up

The parts of Runcorn we get called to most

Cars pick their moment badly. These are the places we are asked to come to, and the faults that go with them.

Runcorn was built twice. There is the old riverside town of terraced streets and steep hills running down towards the water, and then there is the new town laid out around the expressways, with the estates hanging off them and a busway threading between. The two halves produce completely different work for us, and they need approaching differently on the day.

Laid over the top of both is the river. Two bridges carry the town across it, and a lot of households here organise their week around the crossing, which shapes both what the cars do and what people are willing to spend on them without warning. That is the single biggest reason we settle the price before anything starts.

The Old Town and the streets above the docks

Terraced rows with no off-street parking, so the car is at the kerb and the neighbours need to get past. We work from the pavement side and put boards down where the camber is against us.

Weston Point and Weston village

Shift patterns around the works, so cars sit unused for long stretches and then get asked to start at unsociable hours. Flat batteries and standing drains are what we see most out here.

Astmoor, Whitehouse and Preston Brook

Vans and company cars parked from first thing until home time. It is the easiest window in the town to get a service or a brake job done without anybody losing an hour of work.

Beechwood, Sandymoor and Castlefields

Driveways, block paving and garages, which means we can take on the longer jobs there. Short local trips are the pattern, and short trips are hard on batteries and on diesel filters.

The expressways and the busway junctions

Constant slowing and pulling away between junctions goes through brakes and clutches faster than open-road miles. Judder under braking is the complaint we hear most from this driving.

The bridges and the M56 at Junctions 11 and 12

Daily crossings and motorway commuting wear a car by distance rather than by time. Tyres, discs and belts come due earlier here than the mileage on a similar car in town.

Wherever the car is stood, we come to it, and Boundary Road picks up anything that has to be lifted. If you are closer to Widnes, Warrington, Great Sankey or Frodsham, those pages describe the same service nearer to you.

Mobile mechanic Runcorn · FAQs

The questions Runcorn drivers ring us about

The ones that come up on the phone most weeks from this side of the river.

How much does a mobile mechanic cost in Runcorn?

A mobile mechanic in Runcorn is quoted as a fixed price before the visit is booked, and it is built from three separate figures: the call-out, the labour and the parts. All three are agreed with you first, so the total does not move afterwards.

Labour is priced against the job rather than a running clock. If a bolt has rusted solid or a caliper refuses to co-operate, the extra hour belongs to us and not to your invoice. Nothing about an agreed number changes on the day.

Parts come with a choice wherever a genuine choice exists. On some vehicles the manufacturer’s own component is the sensible answer and we will say so plainly; on many others a quality aftermarket equivalent performs identically for a good deal less.

Where the fault is not yet known, the diagnosis is priced separately, so you pay to find out and then decide. Ring 01744 808586 for a figure on the call, or look at pay monthly car repairs in Runcorn.

Can you fit tyres at my home or workplace in Runcorn?

Yes. Read the size off the tyre sidewall, send it over with your postcode, and the tyre is brought to the car and balanced on the spot. The wheel goes back on completely finished rather than roughly fitted, wherever the vehicle happens to be standing.

The numbers you need are moulded into the side of the tyre and read something like 205/55 R16 91V. Send that string exactly as it appears and you will get the correct fitment back rather than an approximation.

Punctures inside the repairable central section of the tread get a proper plug and patch fitted from the inside of the tyre, which is the only repair that actually seals the casing. Damage to the sidewall or the shoulder cannot legally be repaired.

Tread is illegal at 1.6mm across the middle three quarters, but wet grip has largely gone by around 3mm, so that is the point worth acting on. See mobile tyre fitting in Runcorn.

Can a mobile mechanic work on my car if I live on a terraced street in Runcorn with no driveway?

Yes. Kerbside work in the Old Town terraces is normal for us and most jobs are finished at the roadside without blocking anyone in. Tell us the street when you book, and we will bring what is needed to work safely on a cambered road surface.

What actually matters is the footing under the axle stands. On a soft or sloping surface a spreader board goes down first, and on a narrow street we set up from the pavement side wherever the job allows it, so the road stays passable.

Servicing, batteries, brakes, diagnostics, tyres and electrical faults all get done at the kerb without difficulty. The jobs that do not are the ones needing the whole car lifted, and those are collected rather than attempted badly on the road.

Nothing is ever left half apart outside your house. If a fault turns out to be bigger than expected, the car goes to the workshop on our own recovery vehicle and comes back to you finished. See mobile car repair.

Will a mobile mechanic come to Astmoor, Whitehouse or Preston Brook industrial estate?

Yes. The Runcorn industrial estates are routine callouts, and most work is completed in the car park or the yard while you carry on with your day. Give us the site and the bay or unit number when you book and we will bring what the job needs.

It suits the work well. A vehicle that is parked from first thing until home time is standing still for the exact length of time a service or a brake job takes, which is a window that almost never exists at a weekend.

Practically all we need is safe space around the vehicle and the say-so of whoever runs the car park or yard. Most sites are perfectly happy once they know when we are arriving and what is being done.

Vans and company vehicles are handled the same way, including fleets running out of the estates. There is more on that under commercial fleet repairs.

My car won’t start in Runcorn — what happens next?

Ring us and describe what the car does when you turn the key. You do not need to know what is wrong; the noise it makes, or the absence of one, is what tells us what to load before anybody sets off towards you.

We will ask whether the dashboard lit up, whether anything turned over, whether it has done this before and how the car has been used lately. None of that is a test, and a plain description beats a guess at the part every time.

Once we are with you the battery is load tested first and the charging output is checked in the same visit, because a tired battery and a failing alternator feel identical from the driver’s seat. A healthy battery reads 12.6V at rest.

Most no-starts are finished where the car is standing. Call 01744 808586, or read what to do when your car will not start in Runcorn.

Can you fit a car battery at my home or workplace in Runcorn?

Yes. Batteries are carried with us and fitted wherever the car is standing, whether that is a drive at Sandymoor, a kerb in the Old Town or a bay on one of the estates. It is tested before anything is sold to you.

Testing first matters because a great many batteries condemned by other people are simply flat. At rest a healthy battery sits at about 12.6V, and anything under 12.4V is discharged rather than finished. A load test tells the two apart properly.

The charging system gets checked in the same visit. With the engine running the alternator should be holding somewhere between 13.8V and 14.6V, and if it is not, a new battery on its own will only put the problem off for a few weeks.

Most cars built from around 2010 onwards need the replacement coding to the vehicle so the charging strategy matches it, and we do that on site. See mobile battery fitting in Runcorn.

Can you come out the same day in Runcorn?

Same-day visits are usually possible for batteries, punctures, tyres, no-starts, warning lights and most electrical faults, because the parts for those are already on board. Ring reasonably early in the day and we can normally reach you before the afternoon is out.

What decides it is the component rather than the address. Brakes and servicing, or anything ordered specifically against your registration, are more often a next-day visit, and we would rather arrive tomorrow with the correct part than today with a near-enough one.

Bigger work — clutches, belts, gearboxes, welding and MOTs — is booked into the workshop instead, with the car collected and returned as part of the job rather than left for you to arrange.

Hours are Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 12:30pm. Saturday mornings go first, so ring 01744 808586 early in the week for one. If the car has already stopped, see car won’t start Runcorn.

Do you work weekends in Runcorn?

We work Saturday mornings from 9am until 12:30pm, alongside Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm. Saturday is the single busiest slot of the week for callouts and workshop bookings alike, so it tends to be spoken for several days in advance, and it is worth asking early in the week.

If a Saturday is the only realistic time for you, say so on the first call and we will look at what is left before anything else is discussed. Booking one at the start of the week is far more likely to work than trying on the Friday.

For a lot of people the better answer turns out not to be the weekend at all. If the car sits at a workplace on one of the estates all day, a weekday visit costs you nothing in time because the vehicle is already stood still.

Whichever suits you, the price is settled before the slot is held. Have a look at car servicing for what a scheduled service includes.

Can you do a full car service at my address in Runcorn?

Yes. A full service at your home or workplace covers the engine oil and oil filter, the air, pollen and fuel filters where the schedule calls for them, and a proper inspection of levels, tyres, brakes, lights and anything showing early wear, with the service book stamped at the end of it.

The oil is the part people underestimate. Modern engines are specified to a particular grade and standard, and using a general-purpose oil instead affects everything from turbo life to how well a diesel particulate filter regenerates. We put in what your engine is specified for.

The service book is stamped and you are told what was actually found, including items that are perfectly serviceable now but worth keeping an eye on. That record is what protects the car’s value when you come to sell it.

If the bill is awkward this month it can go across three, four or six months at 0%. See servicing on Payment Assist.

Will having my car serviced by a mobile mechanic affect my warranty?

The warranty stays intact regardless of who carries out the work, as long as the car is serviced to the manufacturer’s own schedule using parts that meet the manufacturer’s specification. Block exemption rules were introduced specifically so drivers are not tied to one dealer.

It is probably the single most common thing people get wrong about servicing, and it costs them real money. A great many drivers keep going back to a franchised dealer for years purely because they believe going anywhere else would invalidate their cover.

What genuinely does matter is the evidence. Service at the correct intervals, use oil and parts of the right specification, and keep the record, because that paperwork is what a warranty claim is assessed against if one is ever made.

We stamp the book, list the parts used and record the mileage on every service. Take a look at what a scheduled service covers.

Can you replace brake pads and discs on my driveway in Runcorn?

Yes. Pads and discs are ordinary driveway or kerbside work, and both are done at your address. We measure what is left with a gauge rather than guessing, torque everything to the manufacturer’s figure, and bed the new material in properly before leaving.

Pads leave the factory somewhere around 10 to 12mm thick and are worn out by 3mm, so knowing the actual measurement tells you whether you have months left or weeks. You get that number, which makes the next opinion easy to check.

Discs matter as much as pads. A lipped or unevenly worn disc will chew through new pads and bring the judder straight back, so if the discs are past it we will say so rather than fitting pads onto a surface that cannot take them.

Electronic parking brakes are wound back through the car’s own service mode rather than forced. See brake pads and discs.

Do you work on electric and hybrid cars in Runcorn?

Yes. Our technicians hold IMI Level 4 qualifications, which is the level required to work safely on high-voltage electric and hybrid systems rather than simply around them. That covers isolation, diagnostics and battery work as well as ordinary servicing and repair, carried out at your own address.

Electric cars are not maintenance-free, they just wear differently. The instant torque and the extra weight get through tyres noticeably faster than a petrol car of the same size, so tread depth is worth watching more closely than you might expect.

Brakes are the opposite problem. Regenerative braking means the friction brakes are used so lightly that calipers and slider pins seize from lack of movement, and the fix is servicing them regularly rather than waiting for a noise.

Cabin heating, coolant systems and 12V batteries all still need attention too. See EV diagnostics in Runcorn and hybrid diagnostics in Runcorn.

Can you replace a timing belt or a wet belt in Runcorn?

Yes, though belt replacement is workshop work rather than driveway work. The car is collected, the job is done properly on a ramp at Boundary Road, and it is returned to you afterwards, with the collection and return included rather than charged as an extra.

A wet belt is the type that runs inside the engine, lubricated by the oil rather than sitting behind a dry cover. As it ages it sheds material into the oil, and that debris ends up blocking the oil pick-up strainer, which starves the engine of pressure.

That is why a wet belt is not a job to postpone. A snapped or shedding belt on most modern engines does damage far beyond the cost of the belt itself, and the warning signs are easy to miss until it is too late.

Interval depends on the engine and often on time as much as mileage. See timing belt replacement or wet belt replacement on Payment Assist.

Can I get an MOT done at home in Runcorn?

An MOT has to be carried out at a DVSA-approved test centre, so it cannot legally happen on a driveway. What we do instead is collect the car, test it at our own approved centre on Boundary Road and bring it back to you, which comes to the same thing for you.

It is worth knowing that before somebody offers you one.

You can present a car up to one calendar month before the current certificate runs out and keep the existing expiry date, so testing early costs you nothing in remaining cover and gives you time to sort any advisories.

If something fails, the repair is quoted before it is carried out, exactly as any other job would be. Nothing is done on the day without you agreeing the figure first. Ring 01744 808586 to arrange a collection, or see how our MOT testing works.

Can I spread the cost of a car repair in Runcorn?

Yes. Repairs can be spread across three, four or six months at 0% interest through Payment Assist, and on amounts up to £1,000 the application is a soft credit search, so asking the question leaves no footprint on your credit file at all.

To apply you need to be 18 or over, resident in the UK, and paying by a debit card held in your own name. The first instalment is taken when the agreement is set up and the rest follow monthly.

The one thing that catches people out is timing. It has to be arranged before the invoice is settled, so mention it during the first conversation rather than once the work is finished and the bill is in front of you.

It applies to servicing, brakes, tyres, belts and diagnostics alike, and there is no minimum job size for it. The monthly figure is confirmed to you in writing before anything is signed. See pay monthly car repairs in Runcorn.

Do you work on vans and company vehicles in Runcorn?

Yes. Vans and company vehicles are exactly the case a mobile mechanic suits best, because the vehicle earns nothing while it is queueing at a garage. We come to the yard or the car park and work in the window when it is standing still anyway.

On the Runcorn estates that window is usually the working day itself. A van parked at Astmoor or Whitehouse from first thing until home time can be serviced, have its brakes done or have a fault traced without a single hour of work being lost.

Loaded vans wear differently to cars. The weight goes through brakes, tyres, suspension bushes and clutches noticeably faster, and a service interval based on a car’s driving pattern will usually be optimistic for a working vehicle.

Small fleets can be handled together on one visit rather than one at a time. See commercial fleet repairs.

My air conditioning has stopped working — can you fix it in Runcorn?

Yes. Air conditioning faults are diagnosed at your address, starting with whether the system has simply lost refrigerant over time or whether something has actually failed. The two need completely different answers, and only one of them is solved by a regas, so the check always comes before the gas.

Systems lose a small amount of refrigerant every year through the seals and hoses, which is normal, and eventually there is not enough left to cool properly. Topping that up is straightforward and takes very little time.

A leak is a different matter. Putting more gas into a system that cannot hold it simply wastes it, so a leak is traced and repaired first, otherwise you are paying to fill the same system again the following summer.

Running the air conditioning briefly through the winter keeps the seals from drying out. See air con diagnostics in Runcorn or air conditioning servicing.

My diesel keeps putting a warning light on after short trips around Runcorn — what is causing it?

Short, cold journeys are the usual cause. A diesel particulate filter collects soot and burns it off once the exhaust reaches temperature, and a run of five-minute trips never gets it hot enough to complete that cycle, so the filter gradually fills and warns you.

It is an extremely common pattern in a town where a lot of driving is a few minutes to the shops and back. The car is not faulty; it is simply never being asked to do the one thing the filter needs.

Caught early, a proper diagnostic session and a controlled regeneration will usually clear it. Left long enough, the filter blocks solidly and the engine goes into reduced power, at which point the repair becomes a much larger one.

Removing a filter is illegal on a road car and an automatic MOT failure, so the honest fix is the only one offered. See DPF work and car diagnostics.

How do I know a mobile mechanic in Runcorn is trustworthy?

Look for a permanent address you can visit, and for approvals that had to be earned. We are a working garage on Boundary Road with a DVSA-approved MOT test centre on the premises, and we hold both AA and RAC approval as well.

That combination matters more than it sounds. A workshop and a test centre mean the same business that comes out to you also has to answer for the work afterwards, in a building that does not move and cannot be closed down overnight.

The technicians who come out are the same people working the bays, and they hold IMI Level 4 for high-voltage electric and hybrid work. It is a qualification that has to be held to work legally on those systems at all.

You also get every figure before anything starts, in writing. Ring 01744 808586 and ask us anything you like first, or see EV and hybrid diagnostics and spreading the cost.

Which parts of Runcorn do you cover?

All of Runcorn and the wider Halton area, including the Old Town, Halton Village, Halton Brook, Halton Lodge, Weston, Weston Point, Castlefields, Palacefields, Brookvale, Murdishaw, Beechwood, Sandymoor, Windmill Hill and Preston Brook, along with the Astmoor, Whitehouse and Manor Park estates, all at the same price throughout.

There is no part of the town that gets a different service or a different price. The only thing that changes between one address and the next is how much room there is to work, which is a question of setting up rather than of cost.

We work either side of the water and out into Cheshire as well, so a car that lives in Runcorn and sits at work somewhere else during the day can be seen at whichever of the two is easier for you.

Nearby towns have their own pages: Widnes, Frodsham and Warrington.

Mobile mechanic Runcorn · Before you ring

Three things worth having in front of you

With these to hand the call takes about two minutes.

The registration

It gives us the exact engine variant, the oil specification and the right part numbers in one go, which is what makes a firm price possible rather than a rough one. Make and model will do if the plate is not to hand.

What the car is doing, in your words

The noise, when it happens, what the dashboard shows and whether it has done it before. Plain description beats naming a part — a guess sends us out with the wrong thing loaded.

Where the car will be standing

A drive, a kerb on a terraced street, a works car park, a yard. It changes what we bring with us and how the job gets set up when we arrive.

The one thing that does not help is somebody else’s quote. We would rather look at the car and price the fault actually in front of us than work backwards from a figure attached to a different diagnosis. Ring 01744 808586 and we will go through it with you.

Tell us where the car is and what it is doing

Send us the registration, a description of what the car is doing, and whether it will be on a drive, at the kerb or in a bay at work. Back comes what it needs, the three figures that make up the price, and the soonest slot we can reach you in. If what we find once we are there turns out to be something different, you get a phone call before anything else happens.

Fastlane Autocare, 232-254 Boundary Road, St Helens WA10 2PZ — our own workshop, with a DVSA-approved test centre on the premises. Monday to Friday 8:30am–5pm, Saturday 9am–12:30pm.
