Mobile mechanic Rainford · What we bring with us
Mobile mechanic Rainford: what turns up, and what it can do
A village address usually means space, and space means most of the job can be finished exactly where the car already is.
Rainford sits in its own pocket of the borough — the village centre around Church Road and News Lane, then Higher Lane, Mossborough, Rookery Lane, Rainford Junction and the scatter of farms and cottages out towards Crank and Kings Moss. Very little of it is the kind of tight terraced parking that makes working on a car outdoors awkward, and that shapes what we can realistically finish in one visit.
What arrives is the working half of a garage. Fault-code equipment that talks to the individual control modules rather than just reading the warning light, a proper battery and charging tester, jacks and axle stands, torque wrenches, brake tooling, oils, filters and the consumables for the cars and working vehicles we see week in and week out.

What cannot be carried is a four-post lift, a wheel balancer for a bare hub and the brake rollers an MOT is legally tested on. Those live at our own workshop on Boundary Road, which is also a DVSA-approved test centre, and the car is collected and returned as part of the job rather than left as a problem for you to solve.
The useful part is having both. You are not picking between someone who can only manage the easy jobs and a garage that wants your car for a whole day. Whichever suits the fault is what happens, and the same people do it either way — from a diagnostic scan right through to a full service.

Six jobs that finish where the car already is
All of these happen at your address in the village. Only the lifting jobs travel.

Diagnostics and warning lights
Stored codes, live sensor readings and a road test where the fault only shows up moving. A code names a circuit, not a broken part, so the evidence gets read before anybody buys anything.
Car diagnostics Rainford
Batteries and charging
Tested under load first, with the charging system checked in the same visit. A tired battery and a failing alternator feel identical from the driver’s seat and cost very different money.
Car battery replacement
Brakes
Pads, discs and the noises that arrive before them. Measured in millimetres rather than guessed at, torqued to the maker’s figure and bedded in before we leave you with them.
Brake pads and discs
Servicing
Oil, filters and the checks that stop small things turning into bills. Booked round your week, recorded properly, and the service book stamped before we go.

Tyres and punctures
Send the size off the sidewall and the tyres come to you, fitted and balanced on the spot. Repairable punctures get a proper plug and patch from the inside of the tyre.
Mobile tyre fitting
Auto electrical faults
Lights, sensors, earths and the intermittent ones that only appear on a cold morning. Chasing those takes time, which is far easier on your own drive than in a workshop queue.

Flat tyre at the top of the lane?
Send the size from the sidewall and your postcode and you get a price and a slot straight back. The balancer comes with us, so the wheel goes back on finished rather than half done. If the timing is awkward on the money there is pay monthly tyres and tyre finance.
Mobile mechanic Rainford · Lanes, verges and potholes
What village lanes do to a car
The road surface out here writes its own list of faults, and it is not the list a town car ends up with.

Between Rainford Junction, Crank, Kings Moss and the roads out towards Bickerstaffe you get narrow lanes with soft, broken edges, no proper kerb to speak of, and drainage that gives up every winter. Water sits, frost gets underneath it, and by February the same holes are back where they were last year. Pulling over to let a tractor or a delivery lorry through means dropping a wheel onto a verge nobody has maintained since autumn.
None of that is dramatic on the day. It shows up weeks later as a vibration that was not there before, a steering wheel sitting slightly off centre, a tyre that keeps losing a few pounds of pressure, or a bang over a speed bump that used to be silent. By then most people have stopped connecting it to the pothole they hit before Christmas.
These are the six things we end up looking at most on cars kept around the village, and every one of them can be assessed on your own drive before anything gets moved anywhere.
A bulge in the tyre wall
The cords inside have snapped and air pressure alone is holding the wall out. It cannot be repaired and it is the one item on this list worth dealing with today rather than at the weekend.
A steady shake at one speed
Usually a buckled rim from a hard edge, and it tends to appear at a particular speed and vanish either side of it. Worth checking before it eats the tyre unevenly.
Steering that pulls or sits off centre
Kerb and verge impacts knock the geometry out. Left alone it scrubs the shoulder off a tyre in a few thousand miles, which is a far dearer fix than putting it right.
A bang over bumps that used to be quiet
Worn bushes, tired drop links or a top mount that has had enough. Lane surfaces work suspension joints harder than smooth tarmac ever will.
A coil spring that has snapped
Common after a heavy hit and often silent at the time. It can sit unnoticed until the car looks slightly down on one corner or the tyre starts fouling.
Mud, grit and salt on everything
Farm traffic and winter gritting leave a coating that seizes brake caliper slides and eats brake pipes. It is the reason rural cars fail MOTs on corrosion more often.
Because there is space to work here, all of that gets checked properly at your address rather than by peering under a car parked half on a pavement. If something genuinely needs the weight off it, it goes back to the workshop and comes home sorted — see mobile car repair and mobile tyre fitting.

Mobile mechanic Rainford · When it will not start
If your car will not start in Rainford
You do not need to know what is wrong. Tell us what the car did when you turned the key and that is plenty to work from.

This is the call we take most often from the village, and the second car in the household is usually the culprit. Something that does the school run and a trip to the shop, then sits on the drive for four days, never gets a charge back into it. The mileage says the car is barely used; the battery disagrees.
Most of these end up being the battery or the charging system, and both get measured rather than assumed. Where it turns out to be the starter motor, the immobiliser or fuelling instead, you get told the finding first and the diagnosis is priced separately, so nothing is fitted on a hunch and you never pay for a part that was not the problem.
Whichever of these sounds like yours, say so on the phone and the right kit and the likely parts come with us.
Silence, no lights, nothing at all
No dash, no click, no noise. That is a power problem — a flat battery, a furred terminal or a poor earth — and it is usually the quickest of the lot to put right.
One heavy clunk, then nothing
Power is getting there but the starter is not turning the engine. Sometimes the solenoid, sometimes the motor, occasionally just a bad connection feeding it.
Fast clicking under the bonnet
Nearly always a battery with nothing left in it. We test the battery and the charging together, because a good battery behind a failing alternator will do this again next week.
It spins over but never fires
Now it is fuel, spark or timing rather than a part you can simply swap. That is a diagnostic job, and we price the diagnosis on its own so you are not agreeing to it blind.
It goes on jump leads, then dies overnight
The battery is holding nothing while the car sleeps. Either it is worn out or something is drawing current after lock-up, and those are two very different repairs.
The dashboard dims as you turn the key
Voltage collapsing under load, which usually points at the battery even when it started fine yesterday. Cold mornings out here bring this one to the surface first.
One number saves people a lot of money. A battery at rest should sit close to 12.6 volts; much under 12.4 and it is discharged rather than finished, which is a different problem with a much cheaper answer. With the engine running, a healthy charging system reads between 13.8 and 14.6 volts. We check both every time. More on car will not start in Rainford and battery replacement.
Mobile mechanic Rainford · Did you know
Salt and mud do more damage to brakes than mileage does
A car kept around the lanes picks up a coating of grit, field mud and winter salt that never fully washes off the parts you cannot see. It settles on brake caliper slide pins and around brake pipes, holds moisture against them, and slowly seizes the caliper so one pad wears out while the other barely touches the disc. That is why a low-mileage village car can go through a set of front pads unevenly and pick up a corrosion advisory at MOT while a motorway car doing three times the miles sails through clean.
Mobile mechanic Rainford · MOTs for village cars
Getting the MOT done when you live in Rainford
The test itself has to happen at a test centre. Everything around it does not have to be your problem.
An MOT is one of the few jobs nobody can do at your house, and it is worth being straight about why. The test is carried out by a licensed tester at a DVSA-approved centre, on calibrated brake rollers, an emissions analyser and a lift, and none of that fits in the back of a van.

What we do instead is take the whole errand off you. The car is collected from your address in the village, tested at our own centre on Boundary Road, and brought back with the certificate. You do not sit in a waiting room, and you do not lose a morning arranging cover for a car you need.
Two things are worth knowing before you book. The first is that you can put a car in up to a calendar month before the current certificate expires and keep your existing renewal date, so there is no penalty for getting it out of the way early in a quieter week. The second is that most failures are small: bulbs, wipers, washer fluid, tread under the 1.6mm minimum, a number plate you can no longer read.
Rural cars do have one extra habit. Corroded brake pipes and seized caliper slides come up far more often here than on cars that live on tarmac, because salt and field mud sit on them all winter. A look over those before the test costs nothing like as much as finding out on the day. See MOT Rainford, or ring 01744 808586 to book the collection.
Mobile mechanic Rainford · What it costs
Three figures, agreed before anything happens
The call-out, the labour and the parts, each given separately, each yours to accept or refuse.
Splitting them is the whole point. A single total tells you nothing about whether it is fair, because you cannot see whether the labour is heavy, the part is expensive, or the visit itself is doing the damage. Separated out, you can look at each figure on its own and make a decision with your eyes open.

Labour is priced against the job rather than a clock. If a wheel bolt has rusted solid or a caliper decides to argue, that is our afternoon and not another line on your invoice. The one thing that moves an agreed figure is finding a genuinely different fault, and when that happens we stop, ring you, and give you the new number before carrying on.
Parts come with a choice wherever a real choice exists. On some cars the manufacturer’s own component is the sensible answer and we will tell you so; on plenty of others a good aftermarket equivalent does exactly the same job for noticeably less money. You pick, rather than finding one figure on the bill and no explanation.
If paying it in one go is awkward, say so at the start — spreading it over three, four or six months at 0% is easy enough, but it has to be set up before the invoice is settled. How much a mobile mechanic costs goes through it job by job.
Mobile mechanic Rainford · Jobs that need lifting
The jobs that go back to the workshop
Some work needs the weight off the wheels. That is not a refusal — it is a collection.
Clutches and flywheels, cambelts and wet belts, gearbox internals, welding, and anything that needs the suspension hanging free all belong on a ramp. So does the MOT itself. Trying to do those on a drive is how corners get cut, and we would rather move the car than pretend otherwise.
Wet belts are worth singling out because they catch owners by surprise. Unlike a traditional cambelt they run inside the engine bathed in oil, and as they age they shed material that ends up in the oil pick-up strainer. Left long enough that starves the engine of oil, which is a far bigger bill than the belt. It is a workshop job, and an interval worth checking rather than assuming.
Ours is on Boundary Road, with the DVSA-approved test centre on the same site, and collection and return from your address is part of the job price rather than an extra to negotiate. See clutch repair, gearbox repairs and MOT Rainford.
Bodywork, panel repair, welding and AdBlue system repair are all done in house rather than farmed out, so ask rather than assuming they are somebody else’s job. Working vehicles and small fleets are covered too, through fleet repairs, and blocked filters get cleaned or replaced properly rather than removed, which would be illegal and an automatic emissions failure.
Not sure whether it can be done where the car is?
Send the make, model, what it is doing and your Rainford postcode on WhatsApp. You will get a straight answer on whether it finishes on your drive or genuinely needs the workshop — and what each of those would cost.
Mobile mechanic Rainford · How quickly
Can somebody come out today?
Usually yes, and what settles it is the part rather than anything else.
Reaching you is rarely the thing that holds a job up. Whether we already carry what your car needs is.
Usually the same day
Batteries, punctures, tyres, no-starts, warning lights and most electrical faults. Ring before late morning and there is normally a slot that day.
Usually the next working day
Brakes, servicing, and anything where the part has to be ordered against your registration. Better tomorrow with the right component than today with a guess.
Booked in with collection
Clutches, cambelts, wet belts, gearbox work, welding and MOTs. These get a workshop slot, and picking the car up from the village is part of the job.
What you will not get is a four-hour window and crossed fingers. If a job before yours overruns you get a message saying so rather than an afternoon at the window. Hours are Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 12:30pm, and Saturday mornings are the first thing to go each week.
Mobile mechanic Rainford · Payment Assist
Spread a bill you had not planned for
Anything on this page can go over 3, 4 or 6 months at 0% interest. Up to £1,000 it is a soft credit search, so finding out whether you qualify costs nothing on your file.
Mobile mechanic Rainford · Why the price comes first
Why the price is agreed before we set off
Standing on your own drive with the bonnet up is the worst possible moment to start talking about money.
Most people have had that version of it at least once. Somebody arrives, has a look, confirms roughly what you already suspected, and only then does a figure appear — with you stood there, the car half apart, and no realistic way of saying you would like to think about it. Nobody decides well in that position, and it is not a position worth putting anyone in.
Settling it first is better for both sides. You get the number before anything happens to the car, and you can say no at no cost. We get to know what the job actually is, which means the right parts are loaded and enough time is booked to finish it in one go instead of coming back.
When nobody knows what is wrong yet, the diagnosis is quoted on its own. You are paying to find out the answer — whether that turns out to be a blocked filter, carbon build-up in the intake or something far cheaper — and then you decide what happens next. Nothing is ordered and nothing is fitted before you have heard the figure and said go ahead.

Where we end up working around Rainford
Cars break down where they are parked, and around here that is rarely a tidy bay with a lamp post over it.
Rainford is not really a commuter dormitory and it is not properly countryside either. It is a village that still has working land around it, with the A570 bypass carrying traffic past rather than through, and a railway station out at Rainford Junction that quietly fills with parked cars every weekday morning. All of that produces a very particular set of jobs.
The mileage pattern is split, too. Plenty of households here run one car that does a proper daily distance and a second that does four miles a week. Those two cars fail in completely opposite ways, and it is usually the one that barely moves that ends up on the phone to us first.
Driveways off Church Road and News Lane
The village centre jobs. Space to work, level ground, and enough room to get a car properly on stands without a queue building up behind us.
Rainford Junction and the station parking
Cars left standing all day and then refusing to start in the dark. We come to the car rather than leaving you to arrange recovery from a space you cannot leave it in.
Crank, Kings Moss and the lanes between
Verge damage, pothole hits and tyres that keep losing pressure. Narrow access, so we ask about the drive before loading rather than after arriving.
Farms and yards off Higher Lane
Pickups, 4x4s and vans that live on unmade ground. Seized caliper slides, clogged filters and corroded pipes come up here more than anything else.
The A570 bypass and runs into Ormskirk
Steadier miles and warmer engines, so the faults are tyres, brakes and belts rather than the short-hop problems of a town car.
Newer estates on the edge of the village
Modern cars with electronic parking brakes and batteries that need coding to the car. Both need the right equipment rather than a spanner and optimism.
Whichever of those is you, the car gets looked at where it stands and the workshop on Boundary Road picks up anything needing a lift. If you are closer to Billinge, Eccleston, Skelmersdale or Rainhill, those pages cover the same service nearer home.
Mobile mechanic Rainford · FAQs
Questions Rainford drivers ask us most
Twenty of the ones that come up on the phone from the village.
Rainford drivers get their MOT at our own DVSA-approved test centre on Boundary Road in St Helens, and we collect the car from your address in the village and bring it back afterwards, so booking a test never costs you a morning off work.
An MOT has to be carried out at an approved test centre by a licensed tester, on the fixed equipment the test demands, so nobody can legally do one on your drive. What we can do is take the whole errand off you: we pick the car up, test it, and return it with the certificate.
You can put a car in up to a calendar month before the current certificate runs out and still keep your existing renewal date, which is worth knowing if you would rather have it done in a quieter week.
If anything needs putting right, you get the list, the cost of each item and a straight answer on what is a genuine failure and what is only an advisory before any work starts. See MOT Rainford or ring 01744 808586 and we will book the collection.
No mobile mechanic can carry out an MOT at your house, because the test is legally required to happen at an approved test centre using calibrated brake rollers, an emissions analyser and a lift. Anyone offering a mobile MOT is describing a different service entirely.
What is genuinely useful is a pre-test check at your address. Our mobile mechanic can go through the items that actually fail cars in this part of the world first, which means you walk into the test knowing the answer rather than hoping.
Lights, wipers, washers, tyre condition and tread, mirrors, number plate legibility, seatbelts, suspension play and brake performance all get looked at. Most of what fails an MOT is small, cheap and completely fixable before the certificate is at stake.
Then the test itself happens at Boundary Road with collection and return included. That combination gets a lot of village cars through first time. Details are on MOT Rainford, and the same team handles servicing in Rainford.
A failed MOT is not a crisis. You are given the exact failure items in writing, a price for each repair before anything is touched, and the choice of which to go ahead with, and a retest after the work is done is included rather than charged again.
The failure sheet separates genuine defects from advisories, and those two things are treated very differently here. An advisory is a warning about something wearing, not a job you have to authorise today, and we will tell you plainly which category each line falls into.
The commonest failures are unremarkable: a blown bulb, a torn wiper blade, tyres under the 1.6mm legal minimum, a corroded brake pipe, or a suspension component with play in it. Most are done the same day the car is with us.
If the bill is bigger than you were expecting, it can go over three, four or six months at 0%, arranged before the invoice is settled. See pay monthly car repairs in Rainford.
The cost is agreed as a fixed figure before anyone sets off, broken into three separate amounts: the call-out, the labour and the parts. You see all three, you say yes or no to each, and the total you are quoted is the total you are invoiced.
Keeping them apart is deliberate, because one lumped number tells you nothing about whether it is reasonable. Split out, you can see exactly where the money is going and argue with any part of it before a spanner comes out of the bag.
Labour is priced against the job rather than a running clock. A seized wheel bolt or a caliper that fights us is our problem, not an extra line on your bill. Only a genuinely different fault changes an agreed figure, and then we stop and ring you first.
Where the fault is not yet known, the diagnosis is quoted on its own so you are paying to find the answer, not signing a blank cheque. How much a mobile mechanic costs breaks it down by job, or ring 01744 808586.
The call-out is quoted as its own line on your price before you book, so you know it in advance rather than discovering it on the invoice. It does not change because your house sits down a lane rather than on a main road through the village.
Being open about it matters more than hiding it. Plenty of quotes bury the visit inside an inflated labour rate, which looks tidier and leaves you unable to tell whether the actual work is priced fairly. We would rather you could check both.
Where several jobs are done in the same visit, there is one call-out rather than one per task. If your car needs a battery and a set of front pads, doing them together on one visit is the cheaper way round and we will say so.
For jobs that have to happen on a ramp, collection and return from Rainford is built into the job price instead. Full service list on mobile car repair.
We cover the whole village and everything around it: Church Road, News Lane, Higher Lane, Mossborough, Rookery Lane, Rainford Junction, Crank and Kings Moss, along with the outlying farms and cottages down the lanes where a recovery truck is the last thing anyone wants.
Being off the main road is not a problem for us. What we do ask is a sentence about the access, because a long unmade drive, a gravel yard or a verge with a soft edge changes what gets loaded and where the car ends up being worked on.
Level ground and a bit of space either side are all that is really needed. Most Rainford properties have both, which honestly makes life easier here than on a terraced street where the car is boxed in between two others.
Neighbouring villages and towns are covered by their own pages: Billinge, Eccleston, Skelmersdale and Ormskirk all have one.
Yes, and a no-start is the single most common call we take from the village. Tell us what the car does when you turn the key and that one sentence usually decides what gets loaded, so the fault is fixed on the first visit rather than the second.
You do not need to know what is wrong. Whether it is silence, a single heavy clunk, fast clicking, or an engine that spins over cheerfully and never fires, describing the noise is enough for us to work with.
Most of these turn out to be the battery or the charging system, and both get measured before anything is sold. A battery sitting at rest should read close to 12.6 volts; much under 12.4 and it is discharged rather than dead, which is a different repair.
With the engine running, a healthy charging system shows between 13.8 and 14.6 volts. If that is fine and the battery still empties overnight, something is drawing current while the car sleeps. More on car will not start in Rainford, or ring 01744 808586.
Four to five years is normal, but a second car that mostly sits on a Rainford drive between short village errands will often give up sooner, because a fifteen-minute run to the shop and back never puts back what starting the engine took out.
That pattern catches people out. The mileage looks low, the car seems barely used, and the battery dies at four years old in the first proper cold snap. Low use is harder on a battery than steady use, not easier.
The other half of the story is what happens when the car is parked up. Everything left awake, from the alarm to the infotainment, draws a small current, and on a healthy car that settles to under about 50 milliamps once it has gone to sleep properly.
We test the battery under load and check the charging system in the same visit, because replacing a good battery to cure an alternator fault buys a fortnight and nothing else. See car battery replacement.
Yes. Send the size off the sidewall and your postcode and you get a price and a slot back, then the tyres come to your address and are fitted and balanced there, with the wheel going back on finished rather than needing a second trip anywhere.
The size is the string of numbers on the tyre wall, something like 205/55 R16 91V. The last two characters matter more than people realise, because they set the load and speed the tyre is built for and fitting below what the car needs is not safe.
Legally the tread has to be at least 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre and right the way round. In practice wet grip and stopping distances fall away noticeably once you are under about 3mm, which is where we would rather you changed them.
If the cost lands at a bad moment there is pay monthly tyres and tyre finance. Booking details are on mobile tyre fitting.
Often yes. A puncture in the central three-quarters of the tread with a hole no larger than 6mm can be repaired properly, and that means the tyre coming off the rim and being plugged and patched from the inside where the damage can actually be seen.
An external string pushed into the hole from outside is not a repair to British Standard and nobody can inspect the inner liner through it. Doing it correctly takes a little longer and leaves you with a tyre that is genuinely sound rather than temporarily quiet.
Some punctures cannot be repaired at all. Anything in the sidewall, anything in the shoulder outside the repairable area, and any tyre that has been driven on flat long enough to chew the inner liner all have to be replaced instead.
Hedge cutting season along the lanes around Rainford produces a run of these every year, usually thorn and flint rather than nails. We carry repair kit and common sizes with us, and can price a replacement on the spot. See mobile tyre fitting.
Get the tyre, the wheel rim, the suspension and the steering looked at together, because a hard pothole hit rarely damages only one of them. The symptoms worth acting on straight away are a pull to one side, a new vibration, or a bulge in the tyre wall.
A bulge on the sidewall is the urgent one. It means the cords inside the tyre have broken and the wall is being held out by air pressure alone, which cannot be repaired and should not be driven on for any longer than it takes to get it changed.
Buckled rims are the next most common finding and often show up as a steady vibration through the steering wheel at a particular speed. Coil springs can snap on impact too, sometimes without any obvious noise at the time it happened.
The lanes around Kings Moss, Crank and Rainford Junction take a beating every winter, so this is a regular job for us out here. We check it all at your address and only move the car if something needs the ramp. See mobile car repair.
Yes, a full service happens on your own drive and it is a real one: engine oil to the specification your car actually calls for, a new oil filter, plus the air, pollen and fuel filters where the schedule asks for them, and the service book stamped.
Alongside the parts, the point of a service is the look round that comes with it. Levels, hoses, belts, brake wear in millimetres, tyre condition, lights, wipers and anything showing early signs of trouble all get checked and reported to you.
You get the brake measurements in numbers rather than an opinion. Pads leave the factory around 10 to 12mm of friction material and are worn out by about 3mm, so knowing you are on 7mm tells you where you stand for the next twelve months.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time and is normally replaced every couple of years regardless of mileage, which is easy to forget because nothing warns you. Full detail on car servicing in Rainford.
Servicing at your address keeps a manufacturer warranty intact, provided the work follows the maker’s schedule and uses parts of the correct specification. Block Exemption rules, which are the law that stopped carmakers tying owners to their own dealers, leave you free to choose who does it.
In plain terms, warranty cover cannot be refused simply because an independent garage carried out the routine maintenance instead of the franchised dealer. That has been the position across Europe for years, and it applies to your car whoever built it.
What matters is the evidence. We record the oil grade and specification used, every filter fitted, the mileage and the date, and stamp the book or complete the digital record, so there is a clean and checkable history behind the car.
That also protects what the car is worth when you sell it, because a gap in the history costs real money at trade-in. Servicing can be spread at 0% too, see servicing on Payment Assist.
Yes. Farm and working vehicles are a regular part of the week around Rainford, and pickups, 4x4s and vans are serviced, repaired and diagnosed at your yard or drive exactly as a car is, with the same fixed price agreed before anything begins.
Working vehicles wear differently to commuter cars. Low-speed lane and field work loads up a diesel particulate filter because the exhaust rarely gets hot enough to clear it, and mud and salt attack brake components far faster than motorway miles ever do.
That means the checks worth doing are different. Brake caliper slides seizing, corroded pipes, worn suspension bushes and clogged filters come up far more often on a vehicle that spends its life on unmade ground than on one that lives on tarmac.
Blocked filters get cleaned or replaced properly rather than removed, because removal is illegal on a road vehicle and an automatic emissions failure at MOT. See DPF replacement and fleet repairs.
Yes, brakes are ordinary driveway work. Pads and discs are measured rather than guessed at, replaced with the correct parts for your car, torqued to the manufacturer’s figures and bedded in properly before we leave, and you are told the measurements in millimetres.
The numbers are worth having. A new pad carries roughly 10 to 12mm of friction material and is finished at about 3mm, so being told you are on 5mm means you can plan the job rather than being told vaguely that they will need doing soon.
Discs wear as well as pads, and a disc worn past its minimum thickness or badly lipped at the edge needs replacing whatever the pads look like. Fitting new pads to worn discs is a false economy that shows up as noise within weeks.
Cars with an electronic parking brake need the caliper wound back electronically in service mode, which is the tool telling the motor to retract rather than anyone forcing it. See brake pads and discs or ring 01744 808586.
An engine management light means the car has stored a fault code, and we read those codes and the live sensor data at your address to find what is actually wrong. A code names a circuit or a reading out of range, never a broken part.
That difference is where money gets wasted. A code pointing at an oxygen sensor might be a failed sensor, or it might be an air leak, a wiring fault or a genuinely rich mixture upstream that the sensor is faithfully reporting.
So we look at the live data, test the circuit and road test the car if the fault only appears when it is moving. The result is a finding you can act on rather than a part swapped hopefully at your expense.
A steady light usually means you can drive on carefully and get it looked at. A flashing one means stop, because it points to misfiring that can damage the catalytic converter. See car diagnostics in Rainford.
Yes, air conditioning is regassed at your address. The old refrigerant is recovered and measured, the system is vacuum tested to prove it holds, and the correct weight of fresh gas and lubricating oil goes back in so the system cools properly again.
Air conditioning loses a little refrigerant naturally every year through the seals, so cooling fades gradually and most people only notice on the first hot day. If it has gone from cold to lukewarm over a couple of summers, that is usually all it is.
The gas your car takes depends on its age. Cars registered from around 2017 generally use R1234yf, while older ones use R134a, and these are different refrigerants at different prices that must never be mixed in the same system.
If the vacuum test shows the system will not hold, there is a leak, and refilling it would simply vent the new gas away. We find the leak first. See air conditioning regas.
Yes. Our technicians hold IMI Level 4 qualifications for high-voltage work, which is the recognised industry standard for working safely on the battery systems in electric and hybrid vehicles, so servicing, diagnostics, brakes and tyres are all handled properly here rather than turned away at the door.
Electric cars still need maintenance, just a different list. There is no oil or exhaust to worry about, but brake fluid, coolant, cabin filters, tyres, suspension and the twelve-volt battery that wakes the whole car up all still need attention.
Two things catch owners out. Instant torque and a heavier vehicle wear tyres noticeably faster, so they need watching more often, and regenerative braking means the friction brakes are used so little that the calipers can seize from lack of movement.
That is why an electric car can pass through several years with plenty of pad material left and still need caliper work. Diagnostics on these is a specialist job, see car diagnostics.
Yes, through Payment Assist, which splits a bill over three, four or six months at 0% interest. On amounts up to 1,000 pounds it is a soft credit search, so asking whether you qualify leaves no mark on your credit file at all.
The conditions are simple. You need to be eighteen or over, resident in the UK, and paying by debit card in your own name. Nothing more complicated than that, and the answer comes back while you are still on the phone.
The one thing that genuinely matters is timing. It has to be arranged before the invoice is settled, not afterwards, so mention it in the first conversation even if you are not sure yet whether you want to use it.
It covers repairs, servicing, MOT work and tyres alike, so an unexpected failure does not have to come out of one month. Details are on pay monthly car repairs, or ask when you ring 01744 808586.
Often the same day, and what decides it is almost always whether the part needed is already carried with us rather than anything else. Batteries, punctures, tyres, no-starts and most warning lights are usually same day; brakes and servicing are usually the next working day.
Anything needing a component ordered against your registration is booked for the following day on purpose. Turning up today with a part that turns out to be wrong for your car helps nobody and means a second visit you did not want.
Bigger jobs get a proper slot instead. Clutches, cambelts, wet belts, gearbox work, welding and MOTs all need the workshop, and those are booked with collection and return from your address included in the price.
Working hours are Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 12:30pm, and Saturday mornings go first. Ring 01744 808586 or see what to do when a car will not start.

What is handy to have in front of you
None of this is essential. It just means you get a real figure on the first call instead of the second.
The registration
It tells us the engine, the exact build and which parts actually fit, which is what turns a rough range into a firm price.
What the car is doing
In your own words. A noise, a light, a smell, or the fact it simply will not move. You do not need the right terminology.
When it started
Overnight, gradually over a month, or from the moment you hit something. Timing narrows the list faster than almost anything else.
The mileage
Roughly is fine. It decides whether a service is due, whether a belt interval is close, and how much life is realistically left in the wear items.
The tyre size, if it is tyres
The string on the sidewall, something like 205/55 R16 91V. Send a photo of it if that is easier than reading it off.
Where the car is sitting
Drive, yard, verge or the station car park, and whether access is tight. It changes what gets loaded and how the visit is planned.
The one thing that genuinely does not help is somebody else’s quote. We would rather look at your car and price the fault in front of us than work backwards from a number attached to a different diagnosis. Ring 01744 808586 or start with car diagnostics in Rainford.

Tell us where the car is and what it is doing
Send the registration, a sentence on what the car is doing, and whereabouts in the village it will be sitting. Back comes what it needs, the three figures, and the next slot we can get to you. If it turns out to be something other than expected once somebody is looking at it, you get a phone call before anything else happens.
