Mobile mechanic Formby · Straight answers, before you book

Your own driveway is the easiest place we work

A breakdown behind a Formby gate doesn't need anyone's permission to fix — it's your own drive. Send us the registration and what your car is doing, and we'll confirm the price before we set off, and come straight to wherever it's standing.exactly where it needs to be. What it does change is how a car is supported and what tends to go wrong, and both of those are covered properly further down this page.

A person reads it, not a queue

Send the registration. Get back a real number, not a range.

No forms, no callback next week, and no “prices from”. Type the reg, say roughly what the car needs, and press send. WhatsApp opens with the message already written and it arrives with the people who will actually do the work.

  • ✓Your MOT expiry looked up as we go — useful when the car is one of two or three and nobody is quite sure whose turn it is.
  • ✓Priced against your actual car from the registration, including the larger wheel and brake sizes that quietly cost more.
  • ✓The next slot on this stretch of coast, Saturday mornings included while any are left.
  • ✓Under warranty is not a problem — say so and we will confirm the schedule your car is due.

Mobile mechanic Formby · What actually happens

Mobile mechanic Formby: what arrives on the drive, and what it can finish

A qualified technician, the parts already on board for the job you described, and a firm price you heard before anybody set off.

Fastlane Autocare mobile mechanic working on a customer car at a Formby address

The order of the visit is always the same. The fault is confirmed first, on the car, in front of you. Only then does anything get replaced. That sounds obvious until you have paid for a battery on a car whose alternator was the problem, which is the single most common way money gets wasted on a car that will not start.

Six things get finished where the car stands: diagnostics and warning lights, batteries and charging faults, brakes, servicing, tyres and punctures, and auto electrical work. Between them they account for most of what we are called out to in Formby. Anything needing the weight off the suspension for a long stretch goes to the workshop instead, and the car is collected and returned rather than left on your hands.

Prestige and plug-in cars are ordinary work here rather than an exception. Our technicians hold IMI Level 4, the qualification legally required for high-voltage battery and drive systems, so an electric or plug-in hybrid car is dealt with at the address like anything else instead of being handed back.

Warning lights are read and interpreted under car diagnostics, and routine work is booked through servicing with Payment Assist.

Mobile mechanic Formby · Numbers, not opinions

Six figures worth knowing before anybody quotes you

Every one of these is measured on the car in front of you and shown to you, rather than described afterwards.

0figures you are given before booking: coming out, labour, parts
0.0a rested battery in good order — under 12.4V it is flat, not finished
0.0the top of a healthy charging range with the engine running
0the draw a sleeping car should settle under, or it flattens itself
0brake pad thickness at the end of its life, from 10–12mm new
0interest across 3, 4 or 6 months if you spread the bill

Diagnostics and warning lights

A flat outside the house, or a wall of sand you did not see coming

Kerbed alloys off the village side streets and slow punctures picked up on the coast lanes are the two we see most. Tyres are fitted and balanced on your driveway, in the correct size and rating for the car, and the old one goes with us. If the timing is awkward there is pay monthly tyres and tyre finance to spread it.

Mobile mechanic Formby · What it costs

Why the price is agreed before we set off

Standing on your own block paving with the bonnet already up is the worst possible moment for anybody to start discussing money.

So it happens first, on the phone, as three separate numbers rather than one lump: what it costs to come out to you, what the labour for the job comes to, and what the parts cost with the brand named. Three figures, given one at a time, before anything is booked.

Larger wheels, bigger brakes and prestige-specification parts genuinely do cost more, and that shows up in the parts figure rather than being buried somewhere. You will be told which it is. Where a matching-quality alternative exists that keeps a warranty intact, you are offered both and you choose.

If the car turns out to be doing something different once it is open, the work stops and you get a phone call. Nothing is added to an invoice that was not said out loud first, which is the whole point of quoting it this way round.

You can spread any of it through pay monthly car repairs in Formby, and there is a plain explanation of what a mobile mechanic charges if you want the background first.

Want the figure before you commit to anything?

Send the registration, what the car is doing and whether it will be on the drive, behind a gate or out on the road. Three numbers come back before a slot is even discussed.

Mobile mechanic Formby · It will not start

If your car will not start in Formby

No diagnosis needed from you. Tell us what the car did when the key turned, in your own words.

Mobile mechanic Formby - battery and charging system being tested on a car that will not start

That one sentence does most of the work. Six different things can stop a car starting and each of them announces itself differently, so what you heard when you turned the key usually decides which parts get put on board before anyone comes out to you. It is a far better guide than any guess made over the phone.

There is a particular pattern to this in Formby, and it is worth naming. A car that is genuinely somebody’s second or third vehicle can go a fortnight without moving, and modern cars are never fully asleep in that time. Alarm circuits, tracking devices, keyless entry systems and infotainment modules all draw a small current continuously, and a battery that was perfectly healthy in October will not necessarily still start the car in February.

None of that means a new battery is automatically the answer, and this is where money most often gets wasted. The battery, the starting circuit and the charging output are all tested on the spot before anything is replaced, so nobody fits a battery to a car whose alternator is failing or whose module refuses to shut down overnight.

Silence, and not even a dashboard light

Nothing happens at all when the key turns. We will ask whether anything lit up before you tried, and whether the car has stood for a while. That combination points at the battery or its connections rather than the starter.

One heavy thud, then nothing more

A single solid clunk and then quiet. Tell us if the lights dipped hard at the same moment. It is usually the starter or a bad connection, and the test on the spot separates the two before anything is bought.

Rapid clicking, like a fast ticking

Quick repeated clicking is a voltage problem almost every time. We will ask what the car has been doing lately, because a fortnight standing on a driveway does this far more often than a genuinely worn-out battery.

It turns over happily but never fires

Plenty of cranking and no start at all means there is power. We will ask about fuel, whether the immobiliser light is behaving, and what the car did the last time it ran properly.

It catches for a second, then dies

The engine fires and then stops almost immediately. That gets asked about carefully, because it usually means the car is starting and then being shut down by something rather than failing to start at all.

Fine on jump leads, dead again by morning

It starts perfectly with help and is flat again overnight. This is the classic overnight drain, and it is measured rather than guessed at — a sleeping car should settle under about 50 milliamps.

Whatever it turns out to be, you hear the figure before the work starts, and the testing happens whether or not it ends in a sale.

There is more detail on what to do when a car will not start in Formby, and on battery replacement if it does turn out to be the battery.

Mobile mechanic Formby · Worth knowing

Pine needles are why the footwell is wet and the electrics have gone strange

Park under the pines around Freshfield or the reserve for long enough and the vented tray at the base of the windscreen fills with needles and windblown sand. Unlike leaves, needles do not wash through — they mat together and pack down hard into the drain outlets. Once those are blocked, rainwater that was supposed to run away out of the bottom of the tray instead backs up, finds the bulkhead grommets and runs down inside the car.

Front footwells are where most manufacturers put control modules and multi-plug connectors, so a carpet that feels damp today frequently reappears weeks later as an electrical fault that seems to have nothing to do with water at all. Clearing the tray takes minutes and is worth doing twice a year here.

Mobile mechanic Formby · Working on private ground

Gravel, block paving and what a jack can safely stand on

A long private driveway is the best place in the world to work on a car, provided the ground under the axle stands is doing what it looks like it is doing.

Mobile mechanic Formby - a full service being carried out on a car on a private driveway

Loose gravel spreads sideways under a concentrated load, which is exactly what the foot of an axle stand is. Block paving laid on a sand bed can tilt a single block under the same pressure, and the tilt happens quietly. Both are perfectly workable surfaces, but neither is treated as though it were a concrete floor. Load-spreading plates go down first, turning a small point of pressure into a broad footing, and the stands are set before any wheel leaves the ground.

Where a drive is deep loose gravel and there is a flagged path, a garage threshold or a firm apron within a few feet, the car simply gets moved onto it first. It takes a minute and it is the difference between a job done properly and one done hopefully. If neither exists, you get told that straight, and the car is collected and finished on a ramp instead.

The upside is real. There is no passing traffic, nobody to ask, and no bay to keep feeding. Brakes, servicing and tyres are all comfortably done on a Formby drive — see brake pads and discs and mobile car repair for what each involves.

Mobile mechanic Formby · When it needs the workshop

The jobs that earn a ramp rather than a driveway

Some work needs the wheels off the ground and the weight off the suspension for hours rather than minutes. Saying so is not a refusal.

Clutches, gearboxes, cambelts and wet belts, most exhaust work and underbody repairs all sit in that group. Those cars are collected from your address and returned to it, so what it actually costs you is a set of keys rather than a day. Welding is carried out in house rather than sent out to somebody we do not control, and because there is a DVSA-approved test centre on the same site, a failure can be tested, repaired and retested without the car going anywhere else.

Details are on the clutch repair, gearbox repair and MOT pages.

Business vehicles and small fleets are handled the same way, on the same terms — see commercial and fleet repairs.

Not sure it can be done where the car is standing?

Send the make, the model, what the car is doing and your Formby postcode. You will get a straight answer on whether it finishes on the drive or genuinely needs the ramp, and what each of those would cost.

Mobile mechanic Formby · How soon

Can somebody come out today?

Often yes. What decides it is almost never your address — it is whether the part is already on board.

Same day, as a rule

Batteries, cars that will not start, punctures, brake noise and warning lights are usually done the day you ring, because those parts already travel with us rather than being ordered in.

Next day, with a real slot

If a part has to come in for your particular car — more common on larger wheel sizes and prestige models — it becomes a next-day visit with a proper time, not a window you lose a morning to.

A booked slot at the workshop

Anything needing the ramp gets a date, a collection from your address and a return to it. You will know before you agree to it whether that is what the job needs.

Bookings run Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 5pm and Saturday mornings from 9am to 12:30pm. Saturday slots go first, so they are worth asking about early in the week rather than on the Friday.

Mobile mechanic Formby · The dealer question

A car under warranty does not have to go back to the dealer

It is the most expensive misunderstanding on this stretch of coast, and it costs Formby drivers real money every year.

Block exemption is the rule that stops a manufacturer tying you to its own dealer network. Provided the servicing follows the manufacturer’s own schedule and uses parts of matching quality, your warranty stands. Both of those conditions are met on every service we carry out, the correct oil specification and filters are used rather than something generic, and the work is recorded against the car so there is a documented history to point at if a claim is ever made.

What a manufacturer can reasonably decline is a claim for a component that an incorrect oil or a skipped interval destroyed. That is precisely why the schedule is followed exactly rather than approximated, and why the book or the digital record is completed on the visit rather than sometime afterwards.

The same applies to electric and plug-in hybrid cars, which are increasingly what sits on these driveways. Our technicians hold IMI Level 4, the qualification legally required to work on high-voltage battery and drive systems, so those cars are serviced and diagnosed properly instead of being sent away. They wear tyres quickly because of their weight, and they seize brake calipers because regenerative braking means the friction brakes barely get used — two things that catch owners out constantly.

See EV and hybrid servicing, or book ordinary work through servicing. If the concern is a DPF light on a car that only does short local runs, the honest answer is a proper clean or replacement rather than anything that would fail an emissions test — see DPF replacement and engine carbon cleaning.

Mobile mechanic Formby · Coverage

Where we come out to around Formby

Our vans work right across the North West, and one of them is on this stretch of coast every day.

Freshfield, Little Altcar, Ravenmeols, Woodvale, Great Altcar and the lanes towards Hightown do not have pages of their own, so ring and name the road — they are covered on exactly the same terms as the village itself. Inland, the same service runs through Skelmersdale and Kirkby.

Mobile mechanic Formby · On the ground

Where we actually end up working in Formby

Cars pick their own moment. These are the places we get called to, and what is usually wrong when we arrive.

The pattern here is genuinely different from the towns either side of it. Very little of the work happens at a kerb, a good deal of it happens behind a gate, and a large share of the cars are not anybody’s daily driver. That changes what fails and it changes how the job is set up.

It also means most jobs finish where they start, which is the whole point. What follows is what we find, road by road.

Formby village and the roads off it

Short frontages, a lot of on-drive parking and cars that do very little mileage. Batteries, brake seizure from lack of use and warning lights that came on months ago are the three we see most here.

Freshfield and the roads under the pines

Needles and sand in the scuttle tray, damp footwells and the electrical faults that follow them. Worth a look under the bonnet lip at the base of the windscreen twice a year.

Ravenmeols and the lanes to the shore

Sand carried back on the wheels works into caliper slides and abutments. Uneven pad wear on one side of an axle is the giveaway, and it usually takes the disc with it if left.

Little Altcar, Great Altcar and the farm lanes

Potholed edges, hedge scrapes and slow punctures picked up on flint and grit. Tyres are fitted at the address, and alignment gets checked when a kerb or a rut is the likely cause.

The long gated driveways

Gravel and block paving, plenty of room and no traffic. The best conditions we work in, provided the stands go down on spreader plates rather than straight onto loose stone.

Second and third cars that sit still

Cars used a handful of times a month flatten batteries, seize calipers and let brake discs corrode. Standing does more damage than mileage, and it is nearly all preventable.

The same technicians cover Crosby down the coast, Southport above it, and Maghull and Aintree inland, so a car that moves between addresses is never a problem.

Mobile mechanic Formby · Asked and answered

Questions we get asked most in Formby

The ones that come up on the phone most days from this part of Sefton.

How much does a mobile mechanic cost in Formby?

A mobile mechanic in Formby is quoted as three separate figures before anything is booked: coming out to you, the labour for the job itself, and the parts named by brand. You hear all three on the phone, and none of them changes afterwards.

Most work here is ordinary driveway work, so the price follows the job rather than the address. A battery, a set of front pads and discs, an interim service or a puncture repair carry the same figures outside a house on Freshfield Road as they do behind gates off Victoria Road.

If the fault turns out to be something other than what was described once the car is open, you get a phone call before anything else is touched. Nothing is added quietly, and nothing lands on the invoice that was not agreed out loud first.

Ring 01744 808586 with the registration and the three figures come back in about two minutes, or read what a mobile mechanic actually charges before you call anyone.

Can you fit tyres at my home in Formby?

Yes. Tyres are fitted, balanced and disposed of at your own address in Formby, on the driveway or at the kerb, using equipment carried in our vans. Nothing needs to go anywhere, and the old tyre leaves with the technician who fitted the new one.

Sizes for premium and larger-wheel cars are ordered in for the visit rather than guessed at, so the fitter arrives with the correct rating already on board. Run-flats and low-profile sizes are handled the same way, and the wheel is balanced on site rather than left for later.

The legal minimum tread is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, but wet grip falls away noticeably below 3mm, which is where a wet Ravenmeols side road stops being forgiving. Anything measured under 3mm gets pointed out honestly rather than sold at you.

See mobile tyre fitting in Formby, and if the bill lands at an awkward moment there is pay monthly tyres available on the same visit.

Can I get an MOT if I live in Formby?

Yes. We hold a DVSA-approved MOT test centre of our own at Boundary Road, and your car can be collected from a Formby address, tested, have any failure or advisory work carried out the same day, and be returned to the driveway it left.

That matters more than it sounds, because a test done at a place that also has the ramps and the parts means a failure does not become a second appointment somewhere else. Most cars go out and come back sorted on the same day.

You can present a car for its MOT up to a month before the expiry date and keep the original renewal date, so there is no penalty for getting it out of the way early rather than leaving it to the last week.

Full details are on the MOT page, and if the test throws up brake work it can be finished before the car comes home — see brake repairs.

Do you do car servicing in Formby without me taking the car anywhere?

Yes. A full or interim service is carried out where the car is parked in Formby, on your own driveway, and takes roughly ninety minutes from arrival to the stamped book. Oil, filters, plugs, fluid levels and a full safety inspection are all done on site.

Servicing to the manufacturer's own schedule is what keeps a car's history intact, so the correct oil specification and the correct filters are used rather than whatever is generic and cheap. The service book or the digital record is filled in properly before the job is signed off.

Because we are the ones lifting the bonnet, anything found while the car is open is shown to you there and then. You decide what happens next with the car in front of you, rather than reading about it on a form later.

See servicing with Payment Assist, or call 01744 808586 with the registration and the mileage for a firm figure.

What garage services can you do at a Formby address without the car going into a workshop?

Diagnostics and warning lights, batteries and charging faults, brake pads, discs and calipers, full and interim servicing, tyres and punctures, and auto electrical faults are all completed at your address in Formby. Those six cover the large majority of what we get called out to.

Anything that needs the weight taken off the suspension, or the wheels off the ground for a long stretch, goes to the workshop instead. Clutches, gearboxes, cambelts and most exhaust work sit in that group, and the car is collected and brought back rather than left with you.

The deciding factor is almost never the address. It is whether the part is already on board and whether the car can be supported safely where it stands, which on a Formby driveway is usually straightforward.

A fuller list is on the mobile car repair page, and warning-light work is covered under car diagnostics.

Who services BMWs in Formby without using a main dealer?

We do, at your own address or at our workshop, using the manufacturer's own service schedule and matching-quality parts. A BMW serviced this way keeps its history and keeps its warranty intact, because block exemption rules make it illegal for a manufacturer to insist you use its own dealers.

The schedule is followed properly rather than approximated: the correct oil grade, the correct filters, and the service interval recorded on the car's system so the next reminder appears when it should. That is what a future buyer or a warranty claim actually looks at.

Coding matters too. Most cars built after about 2010 need a replacement battery registered to the car's charging system, and fitting one without doing that leaves the alternator charging to the wrong profile and shortens the new battery's life considerably.

Book it through servicing, or ring 01744 808586 with the registration and we will confirm exactly which schedule your car is due.

Can you service a Mini in Formby?

Yes. Minis are serviced at Formby addresses to the manufacturer's schedule, with the correct oil specification, filters and service reset carried out on the visit. The work is recorded against the car properly, so the history stands up whether the car is sold on or goes back for a warranty claim.

Two things come up repeatedly on these cars and both are worth knowing about. The first is oil consumption between services, which is worth checking yourself rather than waiting for a light. The second is the timing chain on the earlier petrol engines, which announces itself as a rattle on a cold start.

A cold rattle that lasts a couple of seconds and then clears is the one to report, because it is far cheaper to look at early than after it has jumped.

Warning lights and rattles get traced properly under car diagnostics, and the servicing itself is covered on the servicing page.

Do you repair Fords, Hyundais, Renaults and Vauxhalls in Formby?

Yes. Every make is worked on, and the everyday cars get exactly the same treatment as the expensive ones: correct parts, correct schedule, and the same technicians. Formby households often run one prestige car and one ordinary runabout, and both are covered on the same visit if you want.

Some faults are simply more common on particular makes and are worth naming. Wet cambelts, which run inside the engine bathed in oil, are fitted to a good many modern Ford and Vauxhall petrol engines and shed material into the oil pick-up strainer as they age.

That debris is what eventually starves the engine of oil, and it is the reason a wet belt is replaced on time rather than when it starts making a noise. It rarely gives much warning before it goes.

Belt work needs the ramp and is arranged through the workshop; ordinary faults are traced at your address under diagnostics.

Can a mobile mechanic come out to my house in Formby today?

Often yes. Same-day visits to Formby are normal for batteries, cars that will not start, punctures, brake noise and warning lights, because those parts already travel with us. What decides it is whether the part is on board, not where your house happens to be.

If the part has to be ordered in for your particular car, which happens more often with larger wheel sizes and prestige models, it becomes a next-day visit with a proper time slot rather than a vague window.

Bookings run Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 5pm and Saturday mornings from 9am to 12:30pm. Saturday slots are the ones that go first, so those are worth asking about early in the week.

Ring 01744 808586 and describe what the car is doing in your own words — you do not need to know what is wrong. If it will not start, this page explains what happens next.

Does having my car serviced away from a main dealer affect the manufacturer's warranty?

This is the single most expensive misunderstanding among Formby drivers, and the answer is that your cover is unaffected. Under block exemption rules — the law that stops a manufacturer tying you to its own dealers — your warranty stays intact provided the correct schedule is followed and matching-quality parts are used.

Both of those conditions are met on every service we carry out, and the work is recorded against the car so there is a documented history to point at. A manufacturer cannot refuse a claim simply because someone else did the servicing.

It can, quite reasonably, refuse a claim for a part that an incorrect oil or a missed interval destroyed. That is why the schedule and the specification are followed exactly rather than approximated, and why the paperwork is filled in properly at the end of each visit.

If you want it confirmed for your specific car before booking, call 01744 808586 with the registration, or go straight to servicing and say it is still under warranty.

Can a mobile mechanic work on an electric or hybrid car in Formby?

Yes. Our technicians hold IMI Level 4, the qualification legally required to work on high-voltage battery and drive systems, so electric and plug-in hybrid cars are serviced and diagnosed at Formby addresses rather than being turned away at the door or sent off to a main dealer for everything.

Plug-in hybrids and electric cars are common on Formby driveways, and they bring their own pattern of faults. Tyres wear faster because the cars are heavy and torque arrives instantly, so tread is worth watching more closely than on a petrol equivalent.

Brakes go the other way. Regenerative braking does most of the slowing, so the friction brakes are barely used, and calipers seize from lack of movement rather than wearing out. Sliders and pistons need freeing off and greasing long before the pads run low.

EV and hybrid work is covered on the EV servicing page, and brake seizure is dealt with under brake repairs.

Can the car be jacked up safely on a gravel driveway in Formby?

Usually yes, with the right preparation. Loose gravel spreads under load and block paving laid on sand can tilt, so axle stands go down on load-spreading plates that turn a point of pressure into a broad, level footing before any wheel leaves the ground.

Where a driveway is deep loose gravel and there is a firm apron, a flagged path or a garage threshold on the same drive, the car is moved those few feet across first. It takes a minute and it is the difference between a safe job and a bad one.

If neither is available and the surface will not take a stand safely, you get told that plainly rather than watching someone try it anyway. The car is then collected and the work finished on a ramp at no extra cost to the labour.

The long private driveways here are actually the easiest places we work, because there is no passing traffic and no permission needed. See what gets done on them under mobile car repair.

Can brake pads and discs be changed on a block-paved driveway in Formby?

Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs done on Formby driveways. Pads and discs are replaced where the car stands, typically in around an hour an axle, once the stands are set on a firm, level part of the paving with spreader plates underneath.

Pads leave the factory somewhere between 10mm and 12mm thick and are finished at about 3mm, so there is a good deal of warning if anyone is looking. A grinding noise means the friction material has gone entirely and the disc is being cut.

Discs are measured rather than guessed at, against the minimum thickness stamped on the disc itself, and you are shown the reading. If they are still within tolerance you are told that too, rather than sold a pair you do not need.

See brake pads and discs, or ring 01744 808586 and describe the noise — a squeal and a grind mean quite different things.

Why has my footwell gone damp and the electrics started playing up?

Blocked scuttle drains are the usual answer on a Formby car. Pine needles and windblown sand collect in the vented tray at the base of the windscreen, pack down into the drain outlets, and rainwater that should run away ends up inside the car instead.

Parking under the pines around Freshfield and the reserve is what fills the tray in the first place, and the debris compacts rather than washing through. Once the drains are blocked, water finds the bulkhead grommets and runs down into the front footwells.

That is where the trouble really starts, because control modules and connectors live in and under those footwells on most modern cars. A damp carpet is often the first sign of an electrical fault that appears weeks later as something apparently unrelated.

Clearing the tray and the drains is a short job done at your address; the electrical side is traced under car diagnostics or auto electrical repair.

Does sand and grit from the beach at Formby damage brakes?

It wears them, and more importantly it seizes them. Fine sand carried back on the wheels works into the caliper slider pins and the pad abutments, and once those stop moving freely a pad stays in light contact with the disc and cooks itself on one side.

The signature is uneven wear: one pad down to the backing plate while its partner still has half its life left, often with a blue-tinged disc face on that side. It usually costs a set of discs as well as pads if it is left.

Sand is also abrasive between the pad and the disc, which is why cars used regularly for the beach and the coast road get through friction material faster than the mileage alone suggests they should.

Sliders are cleaned and greased as part of any brake job we do — see brake repairs — and the discs are measured rather than assumed under pads and discs.

Can you fit a car battery at my home in Formby?

Yes, and it is usually finished within half an hour of arrival. The battery, the charging system and any drain on it are tested first, because a good many cars written off as needing a battery actually have a charging fault or something staying awake overnight.

A healthy battery at rest reads about 12.6 volts. Below 12.4 volts it is discharged rather than dead, and with the engine running the alternator should show somewhere between 13.8 and 14.6 volts. Anything outside that band points at the charging side instead.

Once everything is switched off and the car has gone to sleep, the remaining draw should settle under roughly 50 milliamps. Second and third cars that stand for a fortnight on a Formby driveway are exactly where a small draw turns into a flat battery.

Batteries on most cars built after about 2010 are coded to the vehicle as part of the fitting. See car battery replacement.

My car will not start in Formby, what happens when you come out?

You describe what the car did when you turned the key, in whatever words come out, and that one sentence usually decides what gets brought. Silence, a single heavy clunk, rapid clicking and endless cranking without firing each point somewhere quite different, and each one needs a different part on board.

You do not need to know what is wrong or use any particular words for it. Saying the lights went dim, or that it went on jump leads and was dead again by morning, tells us as much as any technical description would.

Testing happens before anything is replaced. The battery, the starting circuit and the charging output are checked on the spot, so nobody fits a battery to a car that has a failing alternator or a module refusing to shut down overnight.

Call 01744 808586 and describe it in your own words, or read what to expect when a car will not start before you ring.

What cannot be done on my driveway in Formby and has to go on a ramp?

Anything needing the wheels off the ground for a long stretch or the weight off the suspension: clutches, gearboxes, cambelts and wet belts, most exhaust work, and underbody repairs. That is not a refusal, it is how the job gets done properly rather than badly.

Those cars are collected from your address and returned to it once the work is finished, so the inconvenience is a set of keys rather than a lost day. The workshop at Boundary Road has our own ramps and a DVSA-approved test centre on site.

It also means an MOT failure can be tested, repaired and retested without the car going anywhere else, and welding is carried out in house rather than being sent out to somebody we do not control.

Clutch and gearbox work is covered on the clutch repair and gearbox repair pages.

Can I spread the cost of a car repair in Formby?

Yes. Payment Assist lets you spread any bill across three, four or six months at nought per cent interest, arranged before the invoice is settled rather than afterwards. Up to a thousand pounds it is a soft credit search, so asking leaves no mark on your file.

You need to be eighteen or over, resident in the UK, and paying by a debit card in your own name. It is set up on the phone or at the car and takes a few minutes, and the first payment comes out at the point of sale.

The most common use is an MOT failure that arrives in the same month as everything else. Spreading it means the safety work happens now instead of being put off until the car is genuinely unsafe to be driving.

Which areas around Formby do you cover?

Formby village, Freshfield, Little Altcar, Ravenmeols, Woodvale and the lanes out towards Altcar and Hightown are all covered, along with the rest of the Sefton coast. Our vans work right across the North West, with one of them on this stretch of coast every single day.

The same prices, the same technicians and the same equipment apply everywhere on that list. There is no premium for one postcode over another, and no part of Formby is treated as an outlying job that has to wait its turn.

Private driveways, gated frontages and shared courtyards are all worked on routinely, and where a car sits behind a gate you simply need to be there to open it. Everything else is arranged in advance.

Neighbouring towns have pages of their own: Crosby, Southport, Maghull, Aintree and Ormskirk.

Tell us the postcode and what the car is doing on 01744 808586 and you will be told the next slot available, without any guessing.

Three things to have to hand

With these the call takes about two minutes and you come off the phone knowing the price.

The registration

It gives us the exact engine, the wheel and brake sizes and the MOT expiry, which is how you get a real figure instead of a range with the true number hidden inside it.

What the car is doing, in your own words

A noise, a light, a smell or simply that it will not start. You do not need the right term for it — plain description tells us more than a guessed diagnosis does.

Where the car will be standing

Driveway, gravel, block paving, behind a gate or out on the road. That decides what gets loaded, and whether the job finishes on the spot or wants the ramp.

If the gate needs opening, say so — it is arranged in advance rather than worked out on the doorstep.

Tell us where the car is and what it is doing

Send the registration, a plain description of what the car is doing, and whether it will be on the drive, behind a gate or out on the road. Back comes what it needs, the three figures and the next slot available. If it turns out to be something other than expected once we are with the car, you get a phone call before anything moves.
