Mobile Mechanic Birkenhead
A large part of Birkenhead has no off-street parking at all, so the first thing we ask is not what is wrong but where the car is standing and how much room is round it. You get the price agreed first.

The mechanic who works at the kerb, not just on a driveway
Half of Birkenhead has nowhere to put a car except the road it lives on, so the space around it decides how we work, not the fault itself. Send the registration and the symptoms and we'll plan around it. We fix what we can where your car stands and collect anything needing a ramp for our own workshop, price agreed before we set off.
Send your reg. Get a real price back.
No enquiry form, no "we’ll get someone to ring you", no "prices from". Put your registration in, say what the car is doing, and hit send. WhatsApp opens with the message already typed — somebody in the workshop reads it.
- ✓When your MOT runs out, looked up off the plate so you aren’t going off memory.
- ✓A figure for your car, from the reg — not a bracket with your car somewhere inside it.
- ✓The soonest we can be with you, including a Saturday morning slot.
- ✓Read and answered by the workshop. Nobody reads from a script.

Mobile mechanic Birkenhead · What we can do for you
Mobile mechanic Birkenhead: what we bring, and where we can work
The first thing we need to know about a Birkenhead job is not the fault. It is where the car is standing and how much room there is around it.
This town has two completely different parking situations sitting a mile apart. Go up the hill to Oxton or Prenton and you find wide plots, gravel drives and villas with room for three cars. Drop down towards Tranmere, Rock Ferry or the streets behind Argyle Street and you find Victorian terraces built for horses, where the car lives on the road, the road is single-file once both sides are parked, and there may be a permit scheme on top.
Both are perfectly workable. They just need different planning, and we would rather sort that out on the phone than turn up and improvise. So when you ring we ask what the road is like, whether the space is marked, and whether there is a wall or a gate on one side. Then we load for that job and arrive able to finish it.

What comes with us is the working half of a garage. Fault-code equipment that talks to the individual modules rather than reading a single warning lamp off the dashboard, a battery and charging tester that loads the battery properly, jacks and axle stands, torque wrenches, brake tooling, refrigerant equipment for air conditioning, oils, filters and the consumables for the cars we see week after week.
What no van can carry is a four-poster, a wheel balancer big enough for the awkward sizes and an MOT lane. For those we have our own workshop and a DVSA-approved test centre at Boundary Road, and the same technicians work in both. That is the part most people are surprised by: you are not picking between a van that only does the easy half and a garage that wants the car all day. You get whichever suits the fault. A air conditioning diagnostic, a hybrid health check or a set of tyres fitted at your address all start where you are parked, and only the jobs that genuinely need lifting move.

Six figures we measure against
These are the readings that settle arguments on the roadside, and the ones we quote back to you when we tell you what a car needs.
Mobile mechanic Birkenhead · Done where you park
Six jobs we finish at your address
All six of these get completed where the car is standing, drive or roadside. The rest come to the workshop and go home sorted.

Diagnostics and warning lights
We read the individual modules rather than one headline code, then test the circuit the code is pointing at. A light on the dash names a symptom, not a part, and fitting the part the code mentions is how people end up paying twice.
Car diagnostics
Batteries and charging
Loaded and measured before anything is sold, with the alternator output checked in the same visit. Most cars built after about 2010 also need the new battery coding to the car, or the charging system keeps treating it as the old one.
Mobile battery fitting
Brakes
Pads, discs, calipers, flexible hoses and fluid. Pads start life at 10–12mm and are finished at 3mm, so we measure and show you rather than describing them as low. Discs get checked for lip and run-out at the same time.
Brake repairs
Servicing
Interim or full, to the manufacturer’s schedule and the correct oil specification for your engine, stamped and recorded. Having it done away from a franchised dealer does not affect a manufacturer’s warranty, and we will put that in writing if you want it.
Car servicing
Tyres and punctures
We bring the balancer with us, so the wheel goes back on finished rather than needing a second trip somewhere. Run-flats, low profiles and awkward sizes included, and a repairable puncture gets repaired rather than sold as a tyre.
Mobile tyre fitting
Air conditioning
Tested for pressure and leaks before any gas goes in, because refilling a system that leaks is money poured into the atmosphere. We work with both R134a and the newer R1234yf, and we can clean out the smell as well as fix the cold.

Kerbside in Birkenhead with a flat?
Read the size off the sidewall, send it with your postcode, and you get a price and a slot back. The balancer comes with us so the wheel is finished on the car, which matters more than it sounds when your only alternative is limping to a fitting centre on a space saver. If the bill is the sticking point there is pay monthly tyres and tyre finance, and run-flats are no obstacle.
Mobile mechanic Birkenhead · The money side
What it will cost you
Three numbers, agreed on the phone, before a van is booked to you.
You get the call-out, the labour and the parts separately rather than one lump you cannot pick apart. Separating them is deliberate. It lets you see what you are actually paying for, and it lets you say no to one part of it — plenty of people take the diagnosis and think about the repair, and that is a perfectly reasonable thing to do.
Labour is priced against the job rather than a clock. If a wheel bolt has rusted solid on a car that has spent fifteen years within a mile of the river, the extra half hour is ours. Salt air off the Mersey seizes fixings on Birkenhead cars far more than it does inland, and we would rather price that in than surprise you with it.
Parts come with a choice wherever one genuinely exists. On some cars the manufacturer’s own component is the sensible answer and we will tell you so. On many others a quality aftermarket equivalent does the identical job for noticeably less. What we will not do is quietly pick the dearer one and put a single figure on the invoice. If the total is awkward, pay monthly car repairs spreads it at 0%.

Want the figure before you commit?
Tell us the car, what it is doing and what the parking is like where it stands. Three numbers come back before anything is booked.
Mobile mechanic Birkenhead · If it won’t start
If your car won’t start in Birkenhead
Working out the fault is our job, not yours. Just tell us what the car did when you turned the key.

This is the call we take more than any other, and it is the one people apologise most for, usually along the lines of not being any good with cars. Nobody expects you to be. What we will ask you on the phone is deliberately simple: did any lights come on, did anything move, did you hear anything, and had it done anything odd in the days before. Those four answers get us most of the way to knowing what to load.
Where it matters in this town is the recovery question. On a narrow terraced street with cars nose to tail there is often nowhere for a truck to hook up without emptying the road first, and being stuck on a permit bay you cannot move is a genuinely miserable position. So we come and test the car where it is standing.
Most of these turn out to be the battery or the charging system, and we measure both before anything is sold. If it is the starter, the immobiliser or fuelling, you get the finding first and the diagnosis is priced on its own, so nothing is fitted on a hunch. There is a full car won’t start in Birkenhead page if you want more detail.
Nothing at all when you turn the key
No lights, no noise, no movement. We will ask whether the interior light works and whether anything was left on overnight. It is nearly always power getting to the car — a flat battery, a furred-up terminal or a poor earth — and it is usually the quickest of the lot to sort.
One heavy clunk, then nothing
Power is arriving but the engine is not being turned. We will ask whether it does it every time or only sometimes, and whether it will go if you try again. It is usually the starter or the solenoid inside it, and occasionally a heavy cable that has corroded where you cannot see it.
Fast clicking under the bonnet
Almost always a battery with nothing left in it. We test the battery and the alternator together, because a good battery on a failing alternator does exactly the same thing again a week later, and replacing only the battery means you pay twice for one fault.
It spins over but never catches
The starting side is fine, so the car is missing fuel or spark. We will ask what fuel it takes, whether it was standing a long time, and whether the engine light was on beforehand. Diesels that do short runs in cold weather often come down to glow plugs.
It starts, then dies straight away
Catching and cutting out usually points at the immobiliser not recognising the key, or an idle problem the engine cannot hold through. We will ask whether the key has been wet or dropped, and whether the dashboard shows a car-and-padlock symbol as it cuts.
Fine on jump leads, dead by morning
That pattern says the battery is not holding, or something is awake while the car sleeps. A parked car should settle under about 50 milliamps once the modules shut down, and we can measure the drain where the car stands rather than guessing at it.
Mobile mechanic Birkenhead · Did you know
Living this close to salt water changes what wears out first
Cars kept within sight of the river and the docks corrode from underneath in a way inland cars simply do not. Salt in the air settles on brake pipes, subframes, exhaust hangers and the threads of every fixing on the underside, and the damp never fully leaves. It is why a Birkenhead car of a given age often needs brake pipes and rear arches attended to earlier than the same model kept ten miles inland, and why seized fixings are normal here rather than unlucky. It also means corrosion is worth looking at before an MOT rather than finding out on the day, because pipes and structural rust are advisory one year and a failure the next.
Mobile mechanic Birkenhead · Air conditioning
Air conditioning that has quietly stopped being cold
Most air conditioning is not broken. It has leaked, slowly, over several summers, and nobody noticed until a hot week arrived.
A system loses a small amount of refrigerant every year even when it is perfectly healthy, so a car that has never had the air conditioning touched in eight years is usually low rather than faulty. The trouble is that simply topping one up tells you nothing. If there is a real leak — a corroded condenser at the front of the car, a tired seal, a pipe rubbed through — then the gas you paid for is outside within weeks.
So we test before we fill. The system gets checked for pressure and held under vacuum to see whether it holds, and where it does not, we trace where it is going. That test is the whole difference between fixing it and refilling it every June. Condensers in particular suffer here, because they sit right at the front of the car catching everything the road throws up, and salt-laden air finishes them off faster than most people expect.
The other half of the job is the smell. That damp, sour draught when you first switch the fan on is bacteria growing on a wet evaporator, and it does not clear itself. An antibacterial clean sorts it. All of it happens where the car is parked — there is nothing about air conditioning that needs a ramp — and you can read more on the air con diagnostics in Birkenhead page or ring 01744 808586.
Mobile mechanic Birkenhead · Jobs that need lifting
When the car needs a ramp instead of the roadside
Some work has to happen with the wheels off the ground. That does not mean we hand it back to you — it means we collect it.
Clutches and flywheels, timing belts and wet belts, gearbox internals, welding and anything needing the weight off the suspension all belong on a ramp. So does an MOT, because a test legally has to happen at an approved test centre, and anyone offering you a mobile MOT is describing something other than an MOT.
Ours is at Boundary Road, and it is our own — a working workshop with a DVSA-approved test lane in it, not a booking made on your behalf at somebody else’s garage. We collect the car, do the work and bring it back, and the technician who comes out to your address is one of the people who works the bays. Welding is done in house too, which surprises people, because most mobile operators cannot touch it and most drivers assume corroded sills mean a bodyshop.
The practical Birkenhead point is the tunnels. Getting a car across the water and back to a garage costs you a toll each way and an hour of your day if the queue is bad, and if the car is not safe to drive it costs you a recovery instead. Collection removes all of that. You hand over the keys where the car is, and it comes back to the same spot. Clutch replacement, welding repairs and MOT testing all work this way — ring 01744 808586 and we will arrange it.
Not sure there is enough room where your car is?
Send the make and model, what it is doing, and roughly what the parking is like — drive, permit bay, single-file terrace or a shared car park. We will tell you straight away whether we can finish it where it stands or whether it genuinely has to be collected, and what each of those costs.
Mobile mechanic Birkenhead · No driveway
Working on a car that lives on the street
A large part of this town has no off-street parking at all, and it is the question we get asked before any question about the fault.
The honest answer is that most of what we do can be done at the kerb, and we do it there every week. What changes is how the job is set up, not whether it happens. We need enough room to get a jack under the car and to open a door without catching the vehicle beside you, and we need to not be blocking the road for the people who live on it.
In practice that means a bit of planning at the booking stage. If your street is single-file once both sides are parked, the useful window is mid-morning, when the school run has gone and the evening cars have not come back. If the car is on a permit bay, we work in the bay the car already occupies rather than needing one of our own. If the space is genuinely too tight — a bay hemmed in on three sides, or a job needing the wheels off on a camber — we will say so on the phone and offer collection instead.
Permits are worth being clear about, because people worry about it more than they need to. A working vehicle parked alongside for the length of a job is a different thing to a resident parking without a permit, but the rules vary street by street and we are not going to pretend we know your road better than you do. Tell us the street name and whether it is marked, and we plan around it. Where a scheme is strict, the technician parks on the nearest unrestricted stretch and the work still happens on your car in your bay.
There are things kerbside genuinely will not take. Anything needing the car properly in the air on both sides, anything involving cutting or welding, and anything where fluid could reach a drain all belong in the workshop. Those get collected. Everything else — batteries, brakes, servicing, tyres, diagnostics, air conditioning and electrical faults — is roadside work and always has been. If you are not sure which yours is, ring 01744 808586 and describe the street; it takes about a minute to answer.
Mobile mechanic Birkenhead · How soon we can reach you
Can we come out today?
Often yes. What decides it is almost never getting to Birkenhead — it is whether the part is already on board.
Vans work across the North West with one covering this side of the water, so the question is what the car needs rather than where it is standing. Ring earlier in the day and you widen the odds considerably.
Usually same day
Batteries, punctures, tyres, cars that will not start, warning lights and most electrical faults. These are the jobs our vans already carry for, so a call before late morning can normally be reached the same day.
Usually next day
Brakes, servicing, air conditioning parts and anything ordered against your registration. Arriving tomorrow with the correct component beats arriving today with something that turns out to be for the other engine.
Booked in properly
Clutches, timing and wet belts, welding, gearbox work and MOTs. These get a date, a collection time and a proper slot in the workshop, because rushing them is how they get done twice.
Saturday mornings are 9am to 12:30pm and they book up first, so a Saturday is worth asking about early in the week rather than on the Friday afternoon.

Mobile mechanic Birkenhead · Why we quote first
Why the price is agreed before we set off
Nobody has ever made a good decision about money while stood on a pavement next to their own car with the wheel off.
You have probably had a version of that somewhere. Somebody looks at the car, tells you roughly what you already feared, and then the number arrives — with the car half apart, you in the middle of the road and no realistic way to say you would like to think about it. That is not a choice, it is a corner, and we would rather not put anybody in one.
Fixing the figure first sorts it for both of us. You get to weigh it up before anything happens to the car, and you can say no at no cost. We get to know exactly what the job is, which means loading the right parts and booking enough time to finish it in one visit rather than coming back.
The only thing that moves an agreed price is finding a genuinely different fault once we are into it — a seized caliper hiding behind what looked like a pad job, for instance. When that happens we stop, ring you and give you the revised figure before going any further. You can also read what a mobile visit generally involves on how much a mobile mechanic costs, or call 01744 808586 and get your own number instead of an average.

Where we end up working in Birkenhead
Cars pick their moment badly. These are the parts of town we get called to most, and what tends to be wrong when we get there.
Birkenhead is not one place, it is several stacked closely together, and the driving in each of them wears cars differently. The streets nearest the water are dense, old and tightly parked. The hill above them has space, gardens and gates. Between the two runs a working town that empties towards the tunnels every morning and fills back up at teatime.
That daily crossing shapes a lot of what we see. Queueing on the approach roads and then sitting in a tunnel is stop-start work of the worst kind for a clutch, and a short crossing followed by a short run at the other end means an engine that never gets properly warm. Oil holds on to the moisture it collects, a diesel particulate filter never gets hot enough to clear itself, and a battery never takes a decent charge. It is exactly the mileage pattern that produces the jobs we get called out for.
Tranmere and Rock Ferry
Terraced streets, no off-street parking and cars nose to tail both sides. Almost everything here is kerbside work, and the timing matters more than the job does — mid-morning, once the road has emptied out, is when we can actually get a jack under a car safely.
Oxton and Prenton
Big villas, gravel and driveways with room to work properly, which makes these the easiest visits in town. Cars up here tend to do low mileage on short local runs, so they arrive at us with tired batteries and brakes that have rusted more than they have worn.
Claughton and Birkenhead Park
A mix of converted houses and flats with shared frontage, where the car may not be directly outside your door. Tell us which side of the park it is on and roughly where, and we will find it rather than ringing you three times from the wrong street.
The docks and Cammell Laird
Shift work means a car sat in the same spot for ten or twelve hours, which is a long time to discover at the end that it will not start. We come to the car park rather than leaving you sorting recovery from a space you cannot leave a vehicle in.
Bidston and Noctorum
Estate roads with a lot of parking on the bend and cars doing short hops to the shops and the school. Cold, brief journeys are hard on diesels in particular, and glow plugs and clogged filters turn up here more than the mileage would suggest.
Woodside and the tunnel approaches
Crawling queues, constant clutch work and brakes that get hot and then sit. Judder as you pull away and a pedal that feels longer than it did are the two things worth mentioning early, because both are far cheaper caught before something else goes with them.
Mobile mechanic Birkenhead · FAQs
Questions we get asked most in Birkenhead
The ones that come up on the phone most days from this side of the water.
Mobile tyre fitting in Birkenhead is quoted as one fixed figure that already includes coming to you, the tyre itself, fitting, balancing, a new valve and taking the old tyre away. You are told that number before a slot is booked, and it does not change on the day.
The price of the tyre is the part that moves, because it depends on the size on your sidewall and what you want fitted. Give us the numbers off the tyre wall and we will come back with two or three real options at different prices rather than one take-it-or-leave-it figure.
Balancing is included rather than extra, which is worth checking anywhere. A wheel that goes back on unbalanced shakes through the steering above forty and chews the tyre unevenly, so leaving it out is a false saving.
Send the size and your postcode, or ring 01744 808586. There is more detail on the mobile tyre fitting in Birkenhead page.
Yes, and it is one of the jobs best suited to being done at your address, because we carry the balancer with us. The wheel comes off, the new tyre goes on, it is balanced on the spot and it goes straight back on the car finished.
It works on a driveway and it works at the kerb. On a terraced street we need enough room to get the jack under safely and to swing the wheel out, which is why we ask about the road when you book rather than finding out on arrival.
Doing it where the car stands also avoids the worst part of a flat, which is driving somewhere on a space saver limited to fifty miles an hour with a car full of people wondering why.
Awkward sizes, low profiles and run-flat tyres are all normal work. If cost is the issue, pay monthly tyres spreads it.
Yes, and the whole job happens where the car is parked, because air conditioning never needs a ramp. We test the system for pressure and hold it under vacuum first to find out whether it leaks, then either recharge it or trace and repair the leak before any gas goes in.
Testing first is the difference between fixing it and paying for it again next summer. Every system loses a little refrigerant each year, so an eight-year-old car that has never been touched is usually simply low. A car that went cold six weeks after a top-up has a leak.
Condensers take a hammering here. They sit at the very front catching road spray, and damp salt air off the river finishes them off sooner than it would inland.
The sour smell when the fan starts is bacteria on the evaporator and an antibacterial clean sorts it — see air con diagnostics in Birkenhead.
We come out to cars that have stopped working where they are parked, diagnose the fault on the spot and repair it there when the parts are on board. That covers most no-starts, flat batteries, charging faults, punctures and warning lights, and it happens during opening hours rather than through the night.
It is worth knowing the difference between that and a recovery truck. Recovery moves a car; we fix it. On a tight Birkenhead street a truck often cannot hook up without clearing the road first, so being repaired in the space you are already in is usually the faster outcome.
Most of these calls turn out to be the battery or the alternator, and we measure both rather than selling one and hoping.
Ring 01744 808586, or read the car won’t start in Birkenhead page for what we ask.
Yes. Hyundais are one of the makes we see most, and servicing, diagnostics, brakes, batteries, tyres and electrical faults are all done at your address using the manufacturer’s own service schedule and the correct oil specification for your engine, recorded and stamped exactly as a franchised dealer would.
The two things worth flagging on this make are the timing chain arrangement on some petrol engines, which announces itself as a rattle for a second or two on a cold start, and diesel particulate filters on cars doing short local journeys.
Both are far cheaper attended to early. A chain that rattles briefly is telling you something; a filter that has never got hot enough to clear will eventually put the car into limp mode.
Anything needing lifting comes to the workshop and goes home. See Hyundai servicing or Hyundai specialist work.
Yes. The MOT itself is done at our own DVSA-approved test centre on Boundary Road, and we collect the car from your address in Birkenhead and return it afterwards, so you never have to drive it across or wait around while the test happens.
An MOT legally has to take place at an approved test centre, so a genuinely mobile MOT does not exist. What can be mobile is everything around it, which is the part that actually costs you a day.
You can put a car in up to a month before the expiry date and keep your existing renewal date, so nothing is lost by testing early. Book it on the last day instead and any work found has to be sorted before you can legally drive it again, which is how a small advisory turns into an expensive week.
See Mercedes MOT and MOT testing, or ring 01744 808586.
Yes. Vans work across the North West with one covering the Wirral, so Birkenhead, Wallasey, Bebington, Bromborough, Heswall and the villages between them are all normal working ground, on the same prices, the same parts and the same technicians wherever you happen to be.
Coverage is worth asking about because it decides whether you are quoted a job or quoted a journey. Nothing on your invoice reflects where your postcode sits, and the call-out figure you are given is the same one everybody else on this side gets.
Anything that has to be lifted is collected from your address and brought back to it afterwards, and that works identically from every part of the peninsula. The technician who comes out to you is one of the people who works the bays at Boundary Road, so nothing is handed to a stranger in between.
There are separate pages for Wallasey, Bebington and Heswall if one of those is nearer to where the car actually is.
Yes, welding is done in our own workshop rather than sent out, which is unusual for anyone offering a mobile service. We collect the car from Birkenhead, do the work on the ramp at Boundary Road and bring it back to you, so corroded sills and rusted-through structure get repaired properly.
Living this close to salt water is exactly why it comes up. Damp, salt-laden air works on sills, subframe mounts, brake pipes and jacking points from underneath, and a car of a given age here often needs attention sooner than the same model kept inland.
Corrosion within 30cm of a suspension or steering mounting point is a structural failure rather than an advisory, so it is far better found in good time than discovered on the morning of a test.
See welding repairs, or ring 01744 808586 and describe what you have found.
Yes, Land Rover and Range Rover work is something we do week in and week out, covering servicing, diagnostics, air suspension faults, electrical problems and engine work. The mobile side handles everything that does not need the vehicle lifted, and our own workshop takes on whatever genuinely does.
These vehicles reward proper diagnosis more than most. A single warning message often has several modules talking to each other behind it, and reading one headline code then fitting the part it names is how owners end up paying for the same fault twice.
Air suspension is the classic example. A car that has sunk overnight might have a leaking air strut, a tired valve block or a compressor that can no longer hold pressure, and those are three very different bills. Measuring which it is before ordering anything is what keeps the cost sensible.
See Land Rover engine repair in Birkenhead and Range Rover engine repair.
Yes. BMW servicing, diagnostics, brakes, batteries and electrical work are all regular jobs for us, done at your address in Birkenhead where the work allows, using the correct oil specification and the manufacturer’s schedule so the service history stands up exactly as it should.
One thing specific to this make is worth knowing. On most BMWs a new battery has to be registered to the car, because the charging system adapts to the battery it thinks is fitted. Put a new one in without coding it and it gets charged as though it were still the tired one.
That is a common reason a battery replaced elsewhere gives up again within a year or two, and coding it is part of the job for us rather than a line added to the bill. A healthy battery reads 12.6V at rest, and we show you the figure before and after.
See BMW repairs and BMW diagnostics.
Your manufacturer’s warranty stays intact when an independent garage services the car, provided the work follows the manufacturer’s schedule, uses parts of matching quality and is properly recorded. That protection comes from block exemption rules, which simply mean you are free to choose who maintains your car.
A great many drivers believe the opposite, and it costs them money every year. The condition is about how the service is done, not about whose sign is above the door, so the schedule, the oil specification and the record are what matter.
We service to the manufacturer’s own intervals, use the correct specification oil for your engine, and stamp and record the work so the history reads properly when you come to sell. Ask us for the parts list and the oil specification in writing and you will have it.
See Mercedes servicing and car servicing, or ring 01744 808586.
Alignment is done at the workshop rather than at your address, because it needs the car level on proper equipment to be worth anything at all. We collect from Birkenhead, set the geometry against the manufacturer’s figures and return the car, so you still avoid the trip yourself.
It is worth doing when a car pulls to one side, when the steering wheel sits crooked on a straight road, or when tyres wear on one edge only. Wearing an inside shoulder away is expensive, and it usually shows up long before you feel anything through the wheel.
Potholes and sunken drain covers are what knock it out most around here, and it rarely announces itself with a bang. A car can be out by a fraction of a degree and still feel normal while quietly scrubbing an inside shoulder bald.
Have it checked whenever new tyres go on, so you are not wearing a fresh set out early. See wheel alignment.
Yes. Run-flats are fitted at your address in Birkenhead like any other tyre, using equipment built to handle their much stiffer reinforced sidewalls. The wheel is balanced on the spot and goes straight back on the car finished, so there is no second trip anywhere afterwards.
They matter more than ordinary tyres because most cars fitted with them carry no spare at all. Once one is damaged, the run-flat construction buys you a limited distance at reduced speed and that is the whole of your margin, so replacing it where you are is often the only sensible answer.
They also need replacing rather than repairing far more often, because running one flat breaks down the sidewall internally where no inspection can see it. That is why most manufacturers will not sanction a repair to one that has been driven on.
Read more on run-flat tyres, or send the sidewall size for a price on mobile tyre fitting.
Most failures come from a short list you can stay ahead of: tyres, brakes, lights, wipers, screenwash, suspension and corrosion. Having those looked at before the test, rather than on the day, turns a failure and a retest into a service item you knew about and chose when to fix.
Tread is the easiest to keep on top of. The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the middle three quarters, but wet grip falls away noticeably above that, so 3mm is the sensible point to start planning rather than the point to panic.
Corrosion deserves particular attention this close to the water, because brake pipes and structural areas can move from advisory to outright failure between one test and the next. Bulbs and wipers are worth ten seconds of your own time too; they fail more cars than anything mechanical.
You can test up to a month early and keep your renewal date — see MOT testing and car servicing.
Yes, and a large share of the work we do in Birkenhead happens at the kerb rather than on a driveway. Batteries, brakes, servicing, tyres, diagnostics, air conditioning and electrical faults are all completed in the space the car is already parked in.
What we need is room to get a jack under the car safely and to open a door without touching the vehicle beside you. On a single-file terraced street that is largely a question of timing, and mid-morning once the road has emptied is usually the easiest window.
Where the space genuinely will not allow it — hemmed in on three sides, or sat on a steep camber where a jack cannot be trusted — we say so on the phone and offer collection instead of turning up and giving up on your doorstep.
Tell us the street when you ring 01744 808586, or start with mobile battery fitting.
Your car keeps the bay it is already in, so the work happens on your vehicle in your own space without needing anything extra for it. Where a residents’ scheme is strict about visiting vehicles, we park on the nearest unrestricted stretch and walk the tools across.
Restrictions differ from street to street across the town, and we are not going to claim we know your road better than you do. Telling us the street name and whether the bays are marked is enough for us to plan around it.
It is worth a quick look at the signage on your own road before we come, because that is the one detail nobody can check for you from a distance. Photographing the sign and sending it over settles it in seconds.
Ring 01744 808586 and describe it, or see what is involved on the mobile mechanic page.
Yes, and for shift workers it is usually the better option. A car parked in the same spot for a ten or twelve hour shift is a car with plenty of time available, and having it serviced or repaired while you work saves you booking the day off to sit at home waiting.
Around the docks and the industrial estates that generally means a marked bay with vehicles either side and sometimes a barrier and a gatehouse. Knowing about all of that in advance is what makes it go smoothly, so we ask when you book rather than on arrival.
It is worth a word with whoever manages the site first, as most are perfectly happy with it once they have been asked rather than discovering a van in the yard unannounced. A named contact and a gate code save everybody twenty minutes.
Tell us the site and the finish time, and see car servicing or car diagnostics.
Almost everything is finished where your car is standing in Birkenhead, so no crossing is involved at all. For the smaller number of jobs that genuinely need a ramp, we collect the car from your address and bring it back to the same spot once the work is done.
That matters here more than most places. Taking a car across and fetching it back costs you a toll each way plus whatever the queue is doing that morning, and if the car is not safe to drive it costs you a recovery on top.
Collection removes the lot. You hand the keys over where the car is standing, and it comes back to you road tested and finished, with no crossing, no toll and no morning spent in a queue at either end.
Ramp work covers clutches, timing and wet belts, welding, gearbox jobs and MOT testing — see also clutch replacement.
Yes. Our technicians hold IMI Level 4, the qualification required to work safely on high-voltage electric and hybrid systems, so diagnostics, servicing, brakes, tyres and battery health checks are all carried out properly at your address in Birkenhead rather than being referred on somewhere else.
Electric cars wear differently to what people expect. They are heavy and quick off the mark, so tyres go noticeably faster, while regenerative braking means the friction brakes are barely used and calipers seize from lack of work rather than wearing out.
That combination catches owners out at MOT time, because a car with 8mm of pad left can still fail on a caliper that has seized from disuse. It is worth having the brakes stripped and the slides cleaned periodically even though nothing has worn. Ring 01744 808586 to book it.

Yes. Payment Assist splits a repair across 3, 4 or 6 months at 0% interest, and on bills up to £1,000 the check is a soft credit search, so finding out whether you qualify leaves no footprint on your credit file at all. Ask about it on the first call, because it cannot be added once the invoice is settled.
To use it you need to be eighteen or over, resident in the UK, and paying by a debit card in your own name. The one thing to remember is timing: it has to be arranged before the invoice is settled, not afterwards.
It applies to anything on this page, from a set of tyres to a clutch, and it is worth mentioning when you first ring rather than when the bill lands. Knowing it is available often changes what people choose to have done in one visit instead of splitting it across two.

Mobile mechanic Birkenhead · Before you ring us
What to have ready when you ring
Three things, and the call takes a couple of minutes.
The registration
It gives us the exact engine, the right oil specification and the correct part numbers in one go, and it tells us when the MOT runs out. Make and model will do if the plate is not in front of you.
What the car is doing, in your own words
What the noise is, when it happens, what the dashboard is showing. Describing it plainly beats naming a part — a guess at the cause sends us out with the wrong thing on board.
What the parking is like
Driveway, permit bay, single-file terrace, shared car park or a bay at work. It changes what we bring, how long we allow and which time of day is going to work best.
The one thing that genuinely does not help is somebody else’s quote. We would rather look at your car and price the fault in front of us than work backwards from a figure attached to a different diagnosis.

Tell us where the car is and what it’s doing
Give us the registration, what the car is doing, and whether it is sat on a drive, in a permit bay or at the kerb on a street where both sides are full. You will get back what it needs, the three figures, and the soonest slot we can reach you in. If it turns out to be something other than we expected once we are there, you get a phone call before anything else is touched.
