Mobile Mechanic Birchwood
Birchwood is where a good part of Warrington parks all day, so the car sitting in the bay is often not a Birchwood car at all. Wherever yours is standing, we come to it, and you get the price before anyone sets off.

Your car spends longer parked in Birchwood than you spend driving it
Stuck at a Birchwood business park with a car that won't move? You don't need to arrange recovery back home first. Send us the registration and what it's doing, and we'll come to the bay it's parked in and confirm the price before we set off — finished while you're still at your desk.
Give us the plate. We’ll come back with a real figure.

- ✓A figure for your actual car, not a starting price with an asterisk after it.
- ✓The soonest slot we can reach Birchwood, Saturday mornings included.

Mobile mechanic Birchwood · What we can do for you
A mobile mechanic Birchwood drivers can send to a car they cannot get back to
Two kinds of car sit in Birchwood all day: the one outside a house on Gorse Covert, and the one whose owner lives twenty miles away and is on a call until five.
Birchwood was laid out as a new town on the land the Royal Ordnance Factory used to occupy, which is why the housing sits in self-contained pods with the science park and the shopping centre in the middle, and why Risley Moss and the forest park are green today after a century of being anything but. It gives the place a particular shape: quiet closes on one side of a road, an enormous expanse of parking on the other.
So the first thing we ask is not what is wrong with the car. It is where the car will actually be standing when we get there, because a bay hemmed in by other people’s cars, a barrier and a site office needs a different plan to a driveway with the front door ten feet away. Once we know that, we load for it.

Our vans carry the useful half of a garage. Fault-code equipment that talks to the modules rather than reading a dashboard light back at you, a battery and charging tester that puts a real load through the battery, jacks and axle stands, torque wrenches, brake tooling, oils, filters and the parts the cars round here actually eat. What no van can carry is a four-poster ramp and a wheel balancing machine, and those live at Boundary Road along with our DVSA-approved test centre.
That pairing is the point. You are not picking between somebody who can only manage the small jobs and a garage that wants your car for a day. Whichever of the two suits the fault is what you get, and the same technicians do both. A diagnostic scan or a full service starts at the car; only the jobs that need lifting move.
Mobile mechanic Birchwood · Numbers we quote most days
Six numbers that settle most questions about a car
The measurements we end up reading out on a Birchwood job, and what each one means.
Mobile mechanic Birchwood · Finished where the car stands
Six jobs that never need the car to move
All six are completed at the car itself. Anything heavier is collected, put on the ramp and returned to you.

Warning lights and diagnostics
Stored codes, live sensor readings and a road test where the fault only shows up moving. A code names a circuit, not a broken part, so we prove it before anything is bought.
Car diagnostics
Batteries and charging
Load-tested before a new one is offered, with the alternator checked in the same visit. From the driver’s seat a tired battery and a failing alternator feel exactly the same.
Car battery replacement
Brakes
Pads and discs measured in millimetres rather than guessed at, torqued to the figure and bedded in before anyone packs up. You get the reading, so you know how much life is left.
Brake repairs
Servicing
Oil to the grade your engine is specified for, filters to schedule, and a proper look at the things that turn into bigger bills. The service book gets stamped and the work recorded.
Servicing on Payment Assist
Tyres and punctures
Read the size off the sidewall, send it over, and we bring the tyres and the balancer to the car. A puncture inside the repairable area gets plugged and patched from the inside.
Mobile tyre fitting
Electrical faults
Lights, sensors, earths, and the intermittent ones that only appear on a cold morning. Chasing those takes time, which is easier at the car than in a workshop queue.
Auto electrical repairsMobile mechanic Birchwood · Tyres brought to the car
Come back to a flat tyre in the Birchwood car park?
Send the size off the sidewall and your postcode and you get a price and a slot back. We bring the balancer with us, so the wheel goes back on finished rather than as a spare. If it is the cost that is the sticking point, there is pay monthly tyres and tyre finance.
Mobile mechanic Birchwood · What you pay
What you will actually be asked to pay
A quote from us arrives as three separate items rather than one lump: coming out to the car, the labour, and the parts.
Keeping them apart is deliberate. One total tells you nothing about whether it is reasonable, because you cannot see which part of it is doing the damage. Listed separately you can look at each line, ask about any of them, and say yes or no knowing exactly what you are saying yes to.

Labour is priced against the job rather than a clock that keeps running. A seized bolt or a caliper that refuses to co-operate costs us the extra hour, not you. The one thing that moves an agreed figure is finding a genuinely different fault, and when that happens the work stops, the phone comes out and you hear the new number before anything else is touched.
Parts come with a choice wherever a real choice exists. On some cars the manufacturer’s own component is genuinely the right answer and we will say so plainly; on plenty of others a good aftermarket equivalent performs the same for noticeably less. You get told which is which and you pick, rather than one number appearing on an invoice.
If paying it in one go is awkward, raise it on the first call rather than at the end — splitting it over three, four or six months at 0% has to be set up before the invoice is settled. For a fuller breakdown by job type, how much a mobile mechanic costs works through it properly.

Want the figure before you commit to anything?
Tell us the car, what it is doing, and whether it will be on a drive or in a parking bay. Three numbers come back before anything is booked.
Mobile mechanic Birchwood · If it will not start
If your car will not start in Birchwood
You do not need to know what is wrong. Tell us what the car did when you turned the key, in whatever words come out first.

It is the call we take more than any other, and it lands hardest here, because the car is often in a bay you have to leave to catch a train or a lift. That sentence about what the key did is worth more than any guess at a part, since it tells us what to load into the vans before anyone sets off.
Most of these turn out to be the battery or the alternator, and both get measured before anything is sold. Where it turns out to be the starter, the immobiliser or fuelling, you hear the finding first and the diagnosis is charged on its own, so nothing gets fitted on a hunch and you never pay for a part that was not the problem.
Silence, and the dash stays dark
No lights, no click, nothing. That is a power problem — flat battery, furred-up terminal or a poor earth — and it is usually the quickest of the six to put right.
One heavy clunk, then nothing more
Power is getting there but the engine is not being turned. Often the solenoid, sometimes the starter motor itself, occasionally just the cable feeding it.
Fast clicking under the bonnet
Nearly always a battery with nothing left in it. We test the battery and the charging system together, because a good battery on a failing alternator does this again the following week.
It spins over but never catches
Now it is fuel, spark or timing. That is diagnostic work rather than a parts job, so we price the diagnosis separately and you are not committing blind.
It fires, runs a second, then cuts
Usually fuelling, or an immobiliser not recognising the key. It sounds alarming and is often among the cheaper faults to put right.
Jump leads work, by morning it is flat
The battery is holding nothing overnight. Either it is finished, or something is quietly drawing current while the car sleeps, and those need different repairs.
A word on batteries, because it saves people money. Rested, a healthy one sits close to 12.6 volts. Much below 12.4 and it is discharged rather than dead, which is a different problem with a different answer. With the engine running the charging system should show between 13.8 and 14.6 volts, and once everything has gone to sleep a parked car should settle under roughly 50 milliamps. Anything much above that is a drain, not a duff battery.
Birchwood makes this worse than average, because a car standing untouched for nine hours in the cold and then doing a short run home never gets a decent charge into it. More on that in car won’t start and battery replacement, or ring 01744 808586.
Mobile mechanic Birchwood · Did you know
A car left standing all day rusts its brakes on, and the first press hides it
Park a car at eight in the morning in the open and the discs pick up a film of surface rust within hours, especially after rain. The first time you touch the brakes on the way out it scrubs off and everything feels normal again, which is why nobody notices. What it does over months is take the edge off the outer layer of the pad and leave a lip on the disc, and it is why cars doing very few miles often need brakes sooner than the mileage would ever suggest.
Mobile mechanic Birchwood · Tyres
A tyre that has gone down while the car sat there
The tyre you find flat at half five is the one job where being able to come to the car changes what your evening looks like.
It is the most common thing Birchwood drivers come looking for, and it is worth saying exactly what happens. Send the numbers off the side of the tyre — something like 205/55 R16 91V — and your postcode, and you get a price for that exact size and a slot. The letter and number on the end are the load and speed ratings, which is simply how much weight the tyre is built to carry and how fast it is rated for, and matching them matters more than the brand on the wall.

Not every flat tyre is a new tyre. If the object went through the middle three quarters of the tread and the hole is within the size a repair is allowed to cover, it is plugged and patched from the inside, which is a proper permanent repair rather than a squirt of foam. Damage in the sidewall is different, and that one genuinely does need replacing, because there is nothing structural left to repair.
The balancer comes with us, so the wheel goes back on the car finished and you drive out on it rather than limping home on a space saver. While the wheel is off it costs nothing to read the tread across all three bands and tell you the numbers. The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the middle three quarters, but wet stopping distances start lengthening noticeably by the time you are down around 3mm, which is well before anything is illegal.
If your car is electric or a hybrid it will chew through tyres faster than you expect, because of the weight and the way the torque arrives, so the sizes are worth checking more often. See mobile tyre fitting, puncture repairs and EV tyres, or call 01744 808586.
Mobile mechanic Birchwood · Jobs that need lifting
The work that needs the wheels off the ground
A handful of repairs need the weight off the suspension to be done properly. Those get collected, finished on our own ramp, and brought back to you.
Clutches and flywheels, timing belts and wet belts, gearbox internals, welding and anything where the car has to be lifted all belong in a workshop. So does an MOT, which by law can only be carried out at an approved test centre — ours is on site at Boundary Road, so the car goes in, gets tested and comes back.
Collection and return are part of the job rather than one more thing for you to organise, which matters if the car is sat in Birchwood and you are not. See clutch repair, gearbox repairs, cambelt replacement and MOT Warrington.
Welding, bodywork, panel repair and AdBlue system repair are all done in house rather than passed on to somebody else, so it is worth asking rather than assuming. We also look after fleet and company vehicles, which around the Birchwood parks is a good part of what is in the bays.
Not sure there is room where the car is parked?
Send the make, model, what it is doing and the Birchwood postcode on WhatsApp. You will get a straight answer on whether it can be finished where it stands or genuinely needs the ramp — and what each of those would cost.
Mobile mechanic Birchwood · How quickly we can be there
How soon can somebody be at the car in Birchwood?
Often today. What decides it is almost never you — it is whether the part your car needs is already on the shelf.
We have vans covering Birchwood every working day, so the question is what to bring, not whether anyone is about. Tell us what the car is doing and you will be given a real slot rather than a four-hour window and a shrug.
Usually today
Batteries, punctures, tyres, cars that will not start, warning lights and most electrical faults. Ring before late morning and we can normally be with the car the same day.
Usually tomorrow
Brakes, servicing, and anything where a part has to be ordered against your registration. Better to arrive tomorrow with the right component than today with something that nearly fits.
A booked workshop slot
Clutches, cambelts, wet belts, welding, gearbox work and MOTs. These get a slot at Boundary Road, and collecting and returning the car is part of the job.
If we are running behind you get a message telling you so, because a car you cannot get back to until five is not something to leave people guessing about. Workshop hours are Monday to Friday 8:30am–5pm and Saturday 9am–12:30pm. Saturday mornings go first, so they are worth booking in the week.

Anything on this page can be paid across 3, 4 or 6 months with nothing added on top. Up to £1,000 it is a soft credit search, so asking the question leaves no mark on your file.
Mobile mechanic Birchwood · Why we quote first
Why the price is agreed before we set off
Stood next to an open bonnet with somewhere else to be is the worst possible moment to start discussing money.
You may well have had that version of it. Somebody looks at the car, tells you roughly what you already feared, and only then does a figure appear — with you standing there, the car in pieces and no realistic way of saying you would like to think about it. Nobody decides well in that position, and we would rather nobody was in it.
Agreeing the number first works better for both sides. You hear it before anything happens to the car, and you can say no at no cost. We know what the job is, so the right parts get loaded and enough time gets booked to finish it in one visit instead of arranging a second.
When nobody yet knows what is actually wrong, the diagnosis gets priced on its own. You pay to find out — whether that turns out to be a blocked DPF, carbon in the intake or something far cheaper — and then you decide what happens next. Nothing is ordered and nothing is fitted before you have heard what is involved and said go ahead.

The same service and the same price list, whether the car is at your house or in a bay you borrowed for the day.
Straight out of Birchwood we are regularly in Risley, Croft, Culcheth and Glazebury, none of which have a page of their own yet — ring and ask rather than assuming. Slightly further round, Woolston, Padgate and Golborne are covered by vans working the same week.
Mobile mechanic Birchwood · Out and about
The corners of Birchwood we keep getting called to
Cars never break down at a convenient moment. These are the spots we genuinely keep being called back to, and what is usually behind it.
Birchwood is unusual in that a large share of the cars parked in it on any weekday belong to people who live somewhere else entirely. That changes what goes wrong and, more to the point, what it costs you when it does — because the car is sitting where you cannot easily get back to it, and a recovery truck is rarely the answer you want.
The science park and the office bays
Nine hours standing still in the open, then a cold run home. Flat batteries and brakes that have picked up rust while nobody was driving are the two we see most.
Oakwood and Gorse Covert
Estate driveways and short local trips that never let the engine warm through. Diesel filters that never get hot enough to clear themselves belong to this pattern.
Locking Stumps and the closes off it
Cul-de-sacs where a car can be tucked in tight. We would rather know beforehand, because it changes whether the wheel comes off on the drive or a foot into the road.
Around the station and the shopping centre
Cars left all day by people on the Manchester line. Coming back to a car that will not start when the last train has already gone is the call we take most from here.
Birchwood Way and the roundabouts
Constant slowing and pulling away is hard on pads and discs. A judder through the pedal at speed usually means a disc, not the pads everyone assumes.
Out towards Risley Moss and the forest park
Quieter roads and a lot of second cars that hardly move. Standing still does more damage to a car than most people realise, and it never shows on the mileage.
Wherever the car is, we come to it, and anything needing lifting goes onto our own ramp and comes back to you. If you are closer to Woolston, Warrington or Burtonwood, those pages cover the same service nearer to home.
Mobile mechanic Birchwood · FAQs
The questions Birchwood drivers actually put to us
Twenty answers on tyres, batteries, servicing, brakes, MOTs, electric cars and what a visit really costs.
A mobile mechanic in Birchwood is quoted as a fixed price before the visit is booked, and it arrives as three separate figures: coming out to the car, the labour, and the parts. You agree all three first, so the number you hear is the number you pay.
Splitting the quote up is deliberate. A single total gives you nothing to judge, because you cannot see whether the labour is heavy or the part is expensive. Listed separately you can question any line before you agree to it.
Labour is priced against the job rather than a running clock. A seized bolt or a caliper that fights us costs us the extra hour, not you. The only thing that moves an agreed figure is finding a genuinely different fault, and if that happens the work stops and you hear the revised number first.
Where nobody yet knows what is wrong, the diagnosis is priced on its own, so you are paying to find out rather than signing up blind. Ring 01744 808586 for a figure on the call, or spread it using pay monthly car repairs.
Tyres are fitted at the car in Birchwood, whether it is on your drive or standing in a parking bay all day. Send the size off the sidewall and the postcode, and the tyres and the balancing machine come to the car, so the wheel goes back on finished.
The size is the string of numbers moulded into the side of the tyre, something along the lines of 205/55 R16 91V. The last two characters are the load and speed ratings, meaning how much weight it is built to carry and what speed it is rated to. Matching those matters.
Because the balancer travels with us, you drive away on a proper wheel rather than limping about on a space saver until the weekend. While the wheel is off, the tread gets read across all three bands and you get told the numbers.
The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the middle three quarters of the tread, but wet stopping distances start stretching well before that, so around 3mm is the point worth planning at. See mobile tyre fitting and pay monthly tyres if the timing is awkward.
A full service is carried out at the car in Birchwood, on your driveway or in the bay you parked in that morning, so no day off and no waiting room. Oil, filters and the safety checks are all done where the car stands, and the service book gets stamped.
It is a real service rather than a shortened version of one. The oil goes in to the grade your engine is actually specified for instead of a generic one, the oil, air, pollen and fuel filters are changed where the schedule calls for them, and the levels, tyres, lights and anything showing early wear all get looked at.
What went in is written down, so the history stands up when you come to sell the car. If something is found that needs attention, you hear about it with a figure attached rather than discovering it on an invoice afterwards.
If the car is still under manufacturer warranty, servicing with us keeps it intact, provided the schedule and the correct parts are used. More detail on car servicing, and it can be spread with Payment Assist.
Tell us what the car did when you turned the key and we will bring what that points to. Most no-starts in Birchwood come down to the battery or the charging system, and both get tested at the car before anything at all is sold to you.
You do not need to work out what is wrong first. Silence with a dark dashboard, one heavy clunk, fast clicking, or an engine that spins but never catches all point in different directions, and describing it in your own words is enough for us to load properly.
A rested battery in good health sits close to 12.6 volts, and much below 12.4 means discharged rather than finished. With the engine running the charging system should read between 13.8 and 14.6 volts, which is why the alternator gets checked in the same visit.
Where it turns out to be the starter, the immobiliser or fuelling, you get the finding before any part is bought, and the diagnosis is charged separately. Ring 01744 808586 or read car won’t start.
Batteries are tested under load and replaced at the car in Birchwood, usually the same day. The charging system is checked in the same visit, because a battery that has been sat in the cold for nine hours and a failing alternator produce very similar symptoms.
Testing first matters. A battery reading under 12.4 volts at rest is discharged, not scrap, and it may only need a proper charge and a look at what drained it. Selling somebody a battery that was never the fault is how people end up back where they started a fortnight later.
Once everything on a parked car has gone to sleep, the current still being drawn should settle under roughly 50 milliamps. Anything much above that is a drain somewhere, and tracing it is a different job to fitting a battery.
Most cars built after about 2010 need the new battery coding to the car so the charging system knows it is dealing with a fresh one, and our vans carry the equipment to do that. See car battery replacement.
Where you live makes no difference to us. Plenty of the cars we are called to in Birchwood belong to people who drove in from somewhere else that morning, and we come to the car rather than to your address, so it is treated exactly the same as any other job.
That is worth saying plainly, because being stuck with a car you cannot get back to is the awkward part. You can be at a desk, on a train home, or already forty miles away when you find out something is wrong with it.
If it can be finished where it stands, it is. If it genuinely needs lifting, the car is collected, worked on at Boundary Road and brought back, and the collection is part of the job rather than another problem handed to you.
Tell us where the car is parked, whether there is a barrier or a site office involved, and how long you can leave it there. Ring 01744 808586 and see mobile car repair.
Pads and discs are replaced where the car is standing in Birchwood, in a parking bay or on a driveway, provided there is room to get a jack under it and the wheels off safely. Everything is measured, torqued to figure and bedded in before anyone packs up.
Pads leave the factory somewhere around 10 to 12mm of friction material and are worn out by 3mm. You get the actual measurement in millimetres rather than a verdict, so next time you know whether you are close to the limit or nowhere near it.
A judder felt through the pedal at speed is usually a disc that has warped or worn unevenly rather than the pads everyone blames first. Cars that stand still for long stretches also pick up surface rust on the discs, which quietly takes the edge off the pads over a winter.
Electronic parking brakes are wound back properly using the diagnostic equipment rather than forced, which is what damages them. See brake repairs and brake pads and discs.
Your warranty stays intact, provided the car is serviced to the manufacturer’s schedule using parts of the correct specification and the work is recorded. Rules known as block exemption mean you are free to have that done by any competent garage rather than only a main dealer.
Block exemption is simply the law that stops a manufacturer tying you to its own dealers to keep your cover. What it asks for is that the right work is done at the right interval with the right parts, and that there is evidence of it.
So we service to the schedule your car actually calls for, use oil to the specification in the handbook rather than something generic, stamp the book and write down what went in and when. That record is what protects both the warranty and the resale value.
If your car is on a service plan or an extended warranty with unusual conditions, tell us before we book so it can be checked properly. More on car servicing, or ring 01744 808586.
An MOT has to be carried out at an approved test centre, so the test itself cannot happen at the roadside. Ours is on site at Boundary Road, and the practical answer for Birchwood drivers is that we collect the car, test it and bring it back to you.
That keeps the whole thing off your list. The car can be picked up from a driveway or a parking bay, and if it needs work to pass, you get told what and how much before anything is done.
You can put a car in for its MOT up to a month minus a day before the current certificate runs out and keep the same renewal date, so nothing is lost by getting it done early rather than leaving it to the last week.
Anyone offering a test at your address is describing something other than an MOT. See MOT Warrington for what the test covers, and the EV and hybrid MOT if your car is electric.
Electric and hybrid cars are looked after at your address in Birchwood, including diagnostics, servicing, brakes and tyres. Our technicians hold IMI Level 4, which is the qualification the law requires for working on high-voltage systems rather than a preference we have chosen.
They fail differently to a petrol car. Regenerative braking means the friction brakes are used far less, so instead of wearing out the pads and calipers seize up from lack of use, and that shows up as a binding brake rather than a worn one.
Tyres go the other way. The weight of the battery and the way the torque arrives means they wear noticeably faster, so tread depths are worth checking more often than you would on the car you had before.
The twelve-volt battery still exists on an electric car and still fails, which catches people out, because a flat one will leave you unable to start the car at all. See EV servicing and EV tyres.
A car that stands still most of the week goes flat because nothing is putting charge back in, while the alarm, the trackers and the modules keep drawing a little current day and night. Short runs afterwards rarely replace what a long, cold stand has taken out.
The numbers make it obvious once you see them. A healthy battery at rest reads close to 12.6 volts and is discharged below 12.4. Running, the charging system should show 13.8 to 14.6 volts. Asleep, the whole car should settle under roughly 50 milliamps.
If it is drawing considerably more than that, something is staying awake when it should not, and tracing that draw is a different repair to fitting a battery. It is worth finding, because a new battery on an undiagnosed drain lasts weeks.
Second cars, weekend cars and anything left standing while you are away are the usual candidates. See battery replacement and auto electrical repairs.
Saturday mornings are covered, between 9am and 12:30pm. They are the busiest slot of the week and they get taken early, so a Saturday is worth booking during the week rather than ringing on the Friday afternoon and hoping something is left.
Weekdays run from 8:30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Those are the hours, and we would rather say so plainly than imply somebody is available round the clock and let you find out otherwise at nine at night.
For a car that is only ever parked in Birchwood during the working week, a weekday visit while it is standing there anyway is usually the easier answer, since it is going to sit untouched for hours regardless.
If it is urgent and you have missed the Saturday slots, ring 01744 808586 and we will tell you honestly what the soonest realistic option is, including a workshop booking if that suits better.
You do not have to stand and watch. Plenty of jobs in Birchwood are done while the owner is indoors or at a desk, as long as we can get to the car, the keys are arranged, and you are reachable on the phone if anything unexpected turns up.
Keys can be left with a colleague, a neighbour or reception, whichever suits. What we do need is to be able to reach you, because if the fault turns out to be different from the one we came for, the work stops until you have heard the new figure.
When it is finished you get told what was done, what was found and what was measured, along with anything worth keeping an eye on. Nothing gets added to the job on the assumption you would have agreed to it.
Tell us where the car is parked and whether there is a barrier or a site office to speak to first, so nobody is left standing at a gate. See mobile car repair.
Any job on this page can be spread over three, four or six months at 0% through Payment Assist, with nothing added on top. Up to £1,000 it is a soft credit search, so asking whether you qualify leaves no footprint on your credit file.
The conditions are straightforward: you need to be 18 or over, resident in the UK, and paying by debit card in your own name. The one thing that catches people out is timing, because it has to be arranged before the invoice is settled rather than afterwards.
So mention it on the first call, even if you are not sure you will use it. Setting it up costs nothing and it means the option is there when the final figure lands, rather than being closed off by then.
It applies to servicing, brakes, tyres, diagnostics and workshop jobs alike. See pay monthly car repairs and pay monthly tyres.
Any light that has stored a code can be read at the car in Birchwood, including engine management, ABS, airbag, glow plug, DPF, battery and traction lights. Our vans carry equipment that talks to the individual modules rather than simply reporting the light back to you.
A code is the starting point, not the answer. It names a circuit that is unhappy, so a sensor code frequently means the wiring, a connector or the thing the sensor is measuring rather than the sensor itself, and swapping parts to find out gets expensive quickly.
That is why live data matters. Watching the readings while the engine runs, and driving the car if the fault only appears moving, is what separates a genuine diagnosis from a guess with a printout attached.
You get told what was found, what it means and what the repair involves before anything is ordered. See car diagnostics, or ring 01744 808586 to talk it through.
Many punctures are genuinely repairable. If the object went through the middle three quarters of the tread and the hole is within the permitted size, it is plugged and patched from the inside, which is a permanent repair rather than a temporary bodge.
Sidewall damage is the exception, and that one really does mean a new tyre, because the sidewall is what carries the structural load and there is nothing there to repair safely. A bulge in the sidewall means the same thing, even without a puncture.
Driving any distance on a flat tyre often decides it for you, since running on the rim wrecks the inner face even where the original hole would have been repairable. If you can, stop and ring rather than pressing on to get home.
The tyre is taken off, inspected inside and out, and you are told which of the two it is before anything is charged. See puncture repairs and mobile tyre fitting.
Anything needing the car lifted goes onto our own ramp and comes back to you: clutches and flywheels, timing and wet belts, gearbox internals, welding and the MOT itself. Everything else described on this page is finished exactly where the car happens to be standing.
Those jobs need the weight off the suspension and space underneath to be done properly and safely, which no roadside visit can offer. The MOT is different again, because the law says the test has to happen at an approved centre.
Collection and return come as part of the job, so the car is picked up from wherever it is parked, worked on and brought back. You are not left arranging recovery or begging a lift.
Welding, bodywork, panel repair and AdBlue system work are all done in house rather than passed on, so it is worth asking. See clutch repair and gearbox repairs.
Belt replacement is workshop work, so the car is collected from Birchwood, done on the ramp and returned to you. A wet belt is a cambelt that runs inside the engine bathed in oil, and it needs replacing on time because of what it does as it ages.
As a wet belt breaks down it sheds material into the oil, and that debris makes its way to the oil pick-up strainer in the sump. Block the strainer and you starve the engine of oil, which turns a belt job into an engine job.
So the interval is not advisory. Manufacturers give a mileage and a time limit, and the time limit matters just as much on a car that covers very few miles, which describes a great many cars parked around here all week.
Tell us the registration and we will confirm which type your engine uses and what the interval is. See cambelt replacement and wet belt symptoms.
Air conditioning is regassed at the car in Birchwood, and the system is tested for leaks first rather than simply refilled. Gas does not get used up in normal running, so a system that has gone warm has usually let some out somewhere.
That is why refilling on its own is poor value. Put fresh gas into a system with a leak and you are paying to lose it again over the following months, so finding where it is going is the part that actually fixes it.
Cars use one of two gas types depending on age, and they are not interchangeable, so the correct one for your car is what goes in. Running the air conditioning for a few minutes every couple of weeks, even in winter, keeps the seals from drying out.
If it is blowing cool rather than cold, or smells musty when it comes on, those are different faults with different fixes. See air conditioning regas and air con diagnostics.
Often the same day. We have vans covering Birchwood every working day, so what decides the timing is almost always whether the part your car needs is already carried with us, rather than whether there is anybody free to come out to you that day.
Batteries, punctures, tyres, no-starts and most warning lights are usually today, particularly if you ring before late morning. Brakes and servicing are more often tomorrow, because the parts get ordered against your registration rather than approximated.
Clutches, belts, welding, gearbox work and MOTs are booked into Boundary Road with collection and return arranged around you. You get a real slot rather than a vague window, and a message if anything slips.
Hours are Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 12:30pm. Ring 01744 808586 with the registration and what the car is doing, or see mobile car repair.

Three things worth having in front of you
None of it is technical. It just means the right part and the right tools are loaded before anyone sets off.
The registration
It gives us the exact engine, the right oil specification and the correct part numbers in one go. Make and model will do if the plate is not to hand.
What the car is actually doing
The noise, when it happens, what the dashboard is showing. Describing it plainly beats naming a part, because a guess sends us out with the wrong thing loaded.
Where the car is parked
On the drive, at the kerb, or in a bay at work. It changes what we bring, and whether there is a barrier or a gate to get past first.
The one thing that genuinely does not help is somebody else’s quote. We would rather look at the car and price what is in front of us than work backwards from a number attached to a different diagnosis.
Mobile mechanic Birchwood · Give us a shout
Tell us where the car is and what it is doing
Give us the registration, what the car is doing, and whether it will be on a drive or standing in a bay all day. You get back what it needs, the three figures it breaks down into, and the soonest slot we can be at it. If it turns out to be something other than we expected once we are there, you get a phone call before a spanner moves.
