Mobile mechanic Bebington · What we can do for you

Mobile mechanic Bebington: where we’ll come to you, and what travels with us

Half of Bebington has a driveway and half of it does not. We are set up for both, and working at the kerb takes as much planning as working on a drive.

Port Sunlight is the clearest example. It is a conservation village, the cottages were built long before anybody owned a car, and the estate roads are narrow with parking bays tucked between hedges and listed frontages. A recovery lorry is the last thing anyone wants down there, and on some of those lanes it simply will not turn. New Ferry and the older streets off Bebington Road are much the same — terraced frontages, permit bays, and cars that live at the kerb.

So when you ring, we ask where the car will actually be sitting and what is around it. A kerbside job in a conservation area needs a different approach to a driveway in Higher Bebington: less room to swing a jack, neighbours’ cars either side, and often a wall on one flank. Knowing that in advance is what lets us finish in one visit rather than turning round.

Mobile mechanic Bebington - Fastlane Autocare workshop where ramp jobs from Bebington are carried out

Our mobile mechanic carries the working half of a garage: fault-code equipment that talks to the modules rather than just reading a light, a load tester for batteries and charging systems, jacks, axle stands, torque wrenches, brake tooling, oils, filters and the consumables for the cars we see week in, week out. What will not fit in a van is a four-post lift and a wheel balancer for the heavy stuff, and for those we have our own premises and DVSA-approved test centre.

That pairing is the useful part. You are not picking between a van that can only manage the small jobs and a workshop that wants your car for a day. You get whichever suits the fault, handled by the same people. A diagnostic scan, a full service or a set of pads and discs all start at your address; only the lifting jobs move.

Mobile mechanic Bebington · What it costs

What it will cost you

Three figures, quoted separately, before anything is agreed: the call-out, the labour and the parts.

Keeping them apart is deliberate. Rolled into one total, a number tells you nothing about whether it is fair — you cannot see whether the hours are heavy, the component is dear, or something else is doing the damage. Broken out, you can weigh each line on its own and say yes or no with your eyes open.

Labour is priced against the job, not against a running clock. If a wheel bolt has rusted solid or a caliper slider fights us — and around here they do, because of what the estuary air does to steel — that hour belongs to us, not to your invoice. The agreed figure is the figure you pay. The only thing that moves it is finding a genuinely different fault, and at that point we stop, ring you, and give you the new number before carrying on.

Parts come with a choice wherever a real choice exists. On some cars the manufacturer’s own component is genuinely the right answer and we will tell you so; on plenty of others a quality aftermarket equivalent performs the same for noticeably less. You get told which is which and you pick, rather than one number landing on the bill with the decision already made.

If paying it in one go is awkward, say so in the first conversation. Spreading a Bebington repair over three, four or six months at 0% is straightforward, but it has to be set up before the invoice is settled rather than afterwards. For a breakdown by job type, how much a mobile mechanic costs works through it properly.

Want the figure before you commit?

Tell us the car, what it is doing, and whether it will be on a drive, at the kerb or in a works car park. Three numbers come back before anything is booked.

Mobile mechanic Bebington · If it will not start

If your car will not start in Bebington

You do not need to know what is wrong. Tell us what the car did when you turned the key, and that one sentence usually decides what we load.

Mobile mechanic Bebington - car battery being load tested and replaced at a customer address

It is the call we take more than any other, and it is far less mysterious than it feels standing at the kerb in the dark with somebody waiting behind you. We will ask what the dashboard did, what noise came out of the engine bay, and whether anything changed when you tried a second time. Those three answers narrow it down a long way before we have even set a date.

Most of these turn out to be the battery or the charging system, and we measure both rather than selling one on a hunch. Where the cause is the starter motor, the immobiliser or fuelling instead, you get told the finding first and the diagnosis is priced on its own, so nothing gets fitted on a guess and you never pay for a part that was not the problem. The situations below are the ones we hear described most often.

Silence, no lights, nothing at all

Nothing on the dash and no noise anywhere. That is a power problem — a flat battery, a furred terminal or a poor earth — and it is usually the quickest of the lot to put right.

One heavy clunk, then quiet

Current is reaching the starter but the engine is not turning. Sometimes the solenoid, sometimes the motor, occasionally a corroded main feed that cannot carry the load any more.

Fast clicking, like a machine gun

Nearly always a battery with nothing left in it. We test the battery and the charging system together, because a good battery on a failing alternator will do exactly this again in a fortnight.

It spins over but never fires

Now you are into fuel, spark or timing. That is a diagnostic job rather than a parts job, and it gets priced on its own so you are not agreeing to something open-ended.

It starts, then cuts out again

Usually fuelling, or an immobiliser that is not reading the key properly. It sounds alarming and it is often one of the cheaper faults on this list to sort out.

It goes on jump leads, then dies overnight

The battery is holding nothing while the car sleeps. Either it is worn out or something is drawing current with the ignition off, and those are two completely different repairs.

A word on batteries, because it saves people money. A battery at rest should sit close to 12.6 volts. Much below 12.4 and it is discharged rather than dead, which is a different problem with a different answer. With the engine running the charging system should be putting out somewhere between 13.8 and 14.6 volts. If the car sleeps flat, a healthy one should settle to a draw of under about 50 milliamps, and anything much above that is something on board refusing to shut down. We test all three before selling anybody a battery. More on that in car won’t start Bebington, mobile battery fitting and alternator replacement.

Mobile mechanic Bebington · Did you know

Cars this side of the Mersey rust from underneath before they rust on top

Bebington sits on an estuary, and the air moving up from the water carries salt with it all year rather than just when the gritters are out. Paint copes with that far better than the bare steel underneath does. Brake pipes, brake unions, exhaust hangers and the rear sections of exhaust systems corrode from the outside in, and an MOT tester is required to fail a pipe that has corroded to the point of weakening. It is why a Wirral car with a spotless body can still be sitting on pipework that has quietly given up, and why we look underneath rather than just at the wheels.

Mobile mechanic Bebington · Servicing and brakes

Servicing and brakes, without giving up a day

The two jobs people put off longest are the two that suit a driveway or a works bay best.

Nobody looks forward to handing over a Saturday for a service. That is why they slip — not because anyone doubts they matter, but because the only appointment going always lands on the morning you needed. Having it done where the car was parked anyway removes the problem entirely: the car is there at nine, it is there at five, and it has been serviced in between.

Mobile mechanic Bebington - vehicle serviced on the driveway with the Fastlane Autocare van alongside

A service at your address is a proper one. Oil to the grade and specification your engine actually calls for rather than a general-purpose grade out of whatever drum was nearest, an oil filter, an air filter, a pollen filter, and a fuel filter where the schedule asks for one. Then a real look round: levels, tyres, lights, wipers and anything showing early wear. What went in gets written down and the book gets stamped.

If the car is still inside its manufacturer warranty, that stays intact. European competition rules mean that servicing to the maker’s schedule with parts of the right quality protects the warranty wherever the work is carried out, so you are not tied to a franchised dealer to keep your cover.

Brakes are the same story. Pads and discs are ordinary kerbside or driveway work: measured, replaced, torqued to figure and bedded in before we leave. A pad starts life with roughly 10 to 12mm of friction material and is worn out at 3mm, so we give you the measurement in millimetres and you know whether you are near the limit or nowhere close. Electronic parking brakes get wound back electronically, in the mode the car provides for it, rather than forced back with a clamp. See brake repairs and brake pads and discs.

Mobile mechanic Bebington · Jobs that need the ramp

When the car needs lifting rather than jacking

Some work needs the wheels off the ground and the weight off the suspension. That does not mean we turn it down — it means we collect the car and do it properly.

Clutches and dual-mass flywheels, timing belts, wet belts, gearbox internals, welding and anything needing the suspension unloaded all belong on a ramp. So does an MOT, because a test has to happen at an approved test centre by law.

Wet belts are worth knowing about if you run a small modern petrol or diesel engine. The belt runs inside the engine, bathed in oil, and as it ages it sheds material into the oil which ends up blocking the pick-up strainer and starving the engine of pressure. It is not a job that can be judged from outside, so if your car is one of the engines that uses one, ask when you ring.

Ours is on Boundary Road, with a DVSA-approved test centre on the same site. We collect the car, do the work and bring it back, and the collection is part of the job rather than another problem handed to you. See clutch repair, gearbox repairs and MOT testing.

Bodywork, panel repair, welding and AdBlue system repair are all done in house rather than farmed out, so ask instead of assuming they are somebody else’s problem. We also look after fleet and commercial vehicles for the businesses on the Bromborough estates, and Land Rover engine work where it is needed.

Mobile mechanic Bebington · How soon we can reach you

Can somebody come out today?

Often yes. The deciding factor is the part your car needs, not the street it is sitting on.

Getting to Bebington is rarely the thing that holds a job up. The question is whether what your car needs is something we carry as stock or something that has to be ordered against your registration.

Usually same day

Batteries, punctures, tyres, cars that will not start, warning lights and most electrical faults. Ring before late morning and we can normally reach you the same day.

Usually next day

Brakes, servicing and anything needing a component ordered to your exact registration. Better to arrive tomorrow with the right part than today with something close enough.

Booked in properly

Clutches, cambelts, wet belts, welding, gearbox work and MOTs. These get a slot at the workshop, and collecting and returning the car is part of the job.

What we try never to do is hand you a four-hour window and hope. If a job ahead of yours has overrun, you get a message telling you so rather than an afternoon spent guessing. Workshop hours are Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 12:30pm, and Saturday mornings are the busiest slot of the week, so they go early.

Mobile mechanic Bebington · Why we quote first

Why the price is agreed before anybody sets off

Standing next to an open bonnet is the worst possible moment to start a conversation about money.

Most people have had that version of it at some point. Somebody turns up, has a look, confirms roughly what you already suspected, and then the number arrives — with you stood there, the car half apart, and no realistic way of saying you would like to think about it. Nobody makes a good decision in that position, and we would rather not put anyone in one.

Settling it beforehand works better for both sides. You know the figure before anything happens to the car, and you can say no at no cost. We know exactly what the job is, so the right parts are loaded and enough time is booked to finish it in one go instead of coming back for a second visit.

When nobody yet knows what is actually wrong, the diagnosis gets priced by itself. You pay to find out — whether that turns out to be a blocked diesel particulate filter, carbon build-up in the intake, or something far cheaper — and then you decide what happens next. Nothing is ordered and nothing is fitted until you have heard what is involved and said go ahead.

Where we end up working in Bebington

Cars do not break down anywhere convenient. These are the spots we get called to most around Bebington, and what is usually behind it.

Mobile mechanic Bebington - suspension and steering components inspected at the roadside

Bebington is really several places joined together. There is the old village and Port Sunlight, where the roads were laid out for people on foot and the cars came later. There is the newer housing up towards Higher Bebington and Spital with driveways and garages. And there is the working belt down towards Bromborough, where the industrial estates fill their car parks at eight in the morning and empty them again at five.

The driving pattern matters as much as the parking. A great many people here do short runs — the school, the shops on New Chester Road, the station — and then a longer haul down the M53 or across the water to Liverpool a few times a week. Neither extreme is kind. Short trips never get an engine properly warm, so moisture stays in the oil and a diesel particulate filter never reaches the temperature it needs to clear itself. Tunnel and motorway queues sit heavy on clutches and hot on brakes.

Port Sunlight and the village lanes

Narrow conservation-area roads, bays between hedges, and listed frontages nobody wants a recovery lorry near. Most of what goes wrong here we finish at the kerb without blocking anyone in.

New Ferry and New Chester Road

Terraced streets and permit parking, with the car often facing traffic. Batteries, brakes and no-starts are the bulk of it, and it is the sort of spot where being able to work fast matters.

Bromborough and Bromborough Pool

Works car parks that fill at eight and stay full. A car standing all day is a car nobody notices has died until home time, which is exactly when a workshop is closing.

Higher Bebington and Storeton

Driveways and garages, and mileage that is mostly local. Batteries that never get a full charge and filters that never get a proper run are the usual pattern out here.

Spital, Clatterbridge and the station car parks

Cars left standing all day while their owner is on a train or on a shift. Cold, damp and unused is the combination that finds a weak battery or a tired starter.

The M53 and the run across the water

Commuting miles show up as tyres, brakes and belts rather than town faults. Queueing at the tunnel every day wears a clutch differently to a steady motorway run.

Wherever the car is, we come to it and the workshop takes anything that needs lifting. Salt from the estuary is the thread running through most of it — seized bolts, corroded brake pipes and exhausts that go before their mileage suggests. If you are nearer Bromborough, Birkenhead, Heswall or Wallasey, those pages cover the same service closer to home.

Mobile mechanic Bebington · FAQs

Questions we get asked most

The ones that come up on the phone most days from Bebington and the rest of the Wirral.

How much does a mobile mechanic cost in Bebington?

A mobile mechanic in Bebington is quoted as a fixed price before the visit is booked, and it is made up of three separate figures: the call-out, the labour and the parts. You agree all three in advance, so the figure you hear on the phone is the figure you pay.

Labour is priced against the job rather than an hourly clock. Around here that matters, because salt off the estuary seizes wheel bolts and caliper sliders, and the extra half hour spent freeing one is ours rather than an extra line on your invoice.

Parts are quoted with a choice wherever a genuine choice exists. On some cars the manufacturer’s own component is the sensible answer and we will say so; on many others a quality aftermarket equivalent performs identically for noticeably less.

Where nobody yet knows what is wrong, the diagnosis is priced on its own, so you pay to find out and then decide. Ring 01744 808586 for a figure on the call, or read how much a mobile mechanic costs.

What garage services can I get in Bebington without taking the car anywhere?

Most everyday garage work is done at your address in Bebington: full and interim servicing, brake pads and discs, batteries and charging faults, tyres and punctures, diagnostics for warning lights, air conditioning, sensors, bulbs and the electrical faults that take patience to trace. Only work needing the car lifted moves.

Our vans carry fault-code equipment that talks to the individual control modules rather than simply reading a light, a load tester for batteries and alternators, jacks and axle stands, torque wrenches, brake tooling, oils, filters and the usual consumables.

That covers the overwhelming majority of calls. What it cannot cover is anything needing a four-post lift, the suspension unloaded, or a wheel balancer that will not travel — clutches, timing and wet belts, gearbox internals and welding.

Those jobs are collected, done at our own workshop and brought back, so you still deal with one garage. See mobile car repair and vehicle diagnostics for the detail.

Are there garages in Bebington that will come out to me?

Yes. Fastlane Autocare works across Bebington as a mobile service backed by a real garage, which means the same technicians who repair cars on a ramp also come out to your driveway, your kerbside space or your works car park, with the same equipment and the same warranty behind the work.

That combination is the part worth having. Driveway work and ramp work usually mean two separate arrangements. Here they are the same one. Between the two you get whichever suits the fault.

We are AA and RAC approved, and there is a DVSA-approved MOT test centre on our own site, so testing, retesting and any repairs afterwards all happen in one place rather than being passed around.

Hours are Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 12:30pm, and Saturday mornings book up first. See mobile car repair or mobile mechanic Bromborough.

How much is car servicing in Bebington and what is included?

Car servicing in Bebington is quoted against your registration before it is booked, because oil grade, filter set and service interval all vary by engine. An interim service covers oil, oil filter and the safety checks; a full service adds air, pollen and fuel filters where the schedule calls for them.

The oil matters more than people expect. Modern engines specify a particular grade and a manufacturer approval, and pouring in a general-purpose grade instead can affect everything from timing chain wear to how well a diesel particulate filter regenerates.

Alongside the oil and filters we go round the levels, the tyres including the tread depths, the lights, the wipers, the brakes and anything showing early wear, and you get told what is close to needing attention before it becomes a bill.

The service book is stamped and the record kept. See car servicing or servicing on Payment Assist.

Can I get mobile tyre fitting in Bebington?

Yes. Send the size printed on the sidewall, something like 205/55 R16 91V, along with your Bebington postcode, and you get a price and a slot back. We arrive with the tyres and a balancer, so the wheel goes back on finished rather than as a temporary arrangement.

The legal minimum tread is 1.6mm across the centre three quarters of the tyre, but wet grip falls away noticeably below about 3mm. Stopping distances in standing water lengthen long before a tyre is anywhere near illegal.

Age counts too. The four digits in the oval on the sidewall give the week and year the tyre was made, and rubber hardens with time whether or not the car has covered any distance, which matters on a second car that mostly sits.

Fitting happens at your house, at the kerb or at work. See mobile tyre fitting Bebington and pay monthly tyres.

Where can I get an MOT in Bebington?

An MOT has to be carried out at a DVSA-approved test centre by law, so it cannot be done on a driveway by anybody. What we do for Bebington customers is collect the car from home or work, test it at our own approved centre, and return it to you afterwards.

Before the test we can run a pre-MOT check at your address, and it is worth doing. A large share of failures are cheap, avoidable items: blown bulbs, split wiper blades, an empty washer bottle, tyres just under the limit and faded number plates.

On Wirral cars we also look hard underneath, because corroded brake pipes and exhaust sections are a genuine local failure item and one you cannot see from the driver’s seat.

Anything that fails is repaired at the same site and retested there, and you can test up to a month early while keeping your existing renewal date. See pre-MOT checks and MOT testing.

Why do cars near the Mersey fail their MOT on corroded brake pipes?

Salt-laden air off the estuary reaches the underside of a car all year, not just during winter gritting, and steel brake pipes sit exposed to it. An MOT tester is required to fail a pipe that has corroded until it is weakened, which is why Bebington cars with tidy bodywork still fail underneath.

The places it starts are predictable: where a pipe runs along a sill, where it clips to the subframe, and at the unions, because moisture sits in the joint and cannot dry out.

Caught early a section of pipe can be replaced on its own, which is a modest job. Left until the pipe weeps under pressure it becomes a brake failure, and by then the unions either side have usually seized as well.

We check pipework, hoses and exhaust hangers on every service rather than only at test time. See brake repairs and pre-MOT checks.

My car will not start in Bebington — can somebody come out today?

Cars that will not start are usually a same-day job in Bebington, because the parts most often needed travel with us. Tell us what happened when you turned the key, what the dashboard did and whether anything changed second time round, and that is normally enough to decide what we load.

You do not need to know what is wrong. Silence with no dashboard lights points at power; a single heavy clunk points at the starter; fast clicking is nearly always a battery with nothing left; spinning over without firing is fuel, spark or timing.

Whichever it turns out to be, the battery and the charging system are measured before anything is sold, because replacing a good battery to cure a charging fault buys a fortnight and nothing more.

Call 01744 808586 and we will book you in, or read car won’t start Bebington.

How do I know if it is the battery or the alternator?

Measuring both settles it in a few minutes. A battery sitting at rest should read close to 12.6 volts, and much below 12.4 means discharged rather than dead. With the engine running, a healthy charging system puts out somewhere between 13.8 and 14.6 volts at the terminals.

Readings outside that band tell different stories. Below 13.8 with the engine running and the alternator is not keeping up; well above 14.6 and it is overcharging, which cooks a battery from the inside and shortens its life dramatically.

If the car starts fine after a jump but is flat again the next morning, the battery is either worn out or something is drawing current overnight. A car that is properly asleep should settle to under roughly 50 milliamps. Anything much above that is a drain worth tracing before you buy a battery you may not need.

All three checks happen in the same visit. See mobile battery fitting and alternator replacement.

Can you work on a car parked on the street in Port Sunlight?

Kerbside work in Port Sunlight and the older Bebington streets is something we do routinely. Tell us which side of the road the car sits on, whether there is a wall or hedge alongside, and how much room is in front and behind, and we plan the job around what is actually there.

Conservation-area lanes were laid out long before anyone parked outside, so space is the constraint rather than the work itself. Brakes, batteries, servicing, diagnostics and tyres all fit comfortably at the kerb once we know what we are arriving to.

Where a job genuinely needs more room than the street allows, we say so on the phone rather than turning up and discovering it, and the car is collected instead so nothing gets started and abandoned.

The same applies to permit bays in New Ferry and courtyard parking off the village. See mobile car repair.

When do brake pads actually need replacing?

A brake pad leaves the factory with 10 to 12mm of friction material on it and is worn out at 3mm, so the honest answer is a measurement, not a mileage. We measure all four corners and give you the figures, which tells you whether you are near the limit or nowhere close.

Noise is a late warning rather than an early one. A squeal is often the wear indicator touching the disc; a grinding sound usually means the material has gone and the backing plate is cutting into the disc itself, which turns a pad job into pads and discs.

Discs wear too, and every one carries a minimum thickness stamped on it. Fitting new pads to a disc already at its limit wastes the pads.

Pads and discs are ordinary driveway or kerbside work. See brake pads and discs.

Can you replace a car battery at my workplace in Bebington?

Battery replacement at a works car park is one of the most common jobs we do around Bebington and Bromborough, and it takes very little of your day. The battery is load tested first, the charging system is checked in the same visit, and the new one is fitted where the car stands.

Coding matters on anything modern. Most cars built after about 2010 need the new battery registered to the vehicle so the charging strategy knows it is dealing with a fresh one, and skipping that step shortens the life of the battery you have just paid for.

Cars that sit still all day in a car park are exactly the ones that suffer, particularly through winter, because short journeys either side never fully replace what starting takes out.

We carry stock for the common fitments. See mobile battery fitting Bebington.

Do you charge a call-out fee in Bebington?

The call-out is quoted as its own figure before you commit to anything, separately from the labour and the parts, so you can see exactly what each element costs. It is the same across Bebington, and no part of Bebington is charged more than another.

Keeping it separate is deliberate. A single lumped-together total tells you nothing about whether it is fair, because you cannot see whether the hours are heavy, the component is expensive, or something else is inflating it.

Vans work right across the North West with one covering this part of the Wirral, so you are getting a local visit rather than an exception being made for you.

On bigger jobs the call-out is often the smallest of the three figures. Ask for all three when you ring, or see how much a mobile mechanic costs for a breakdown by job type.

Will a mobile service affect my manufacturer warranty?

Your manufacturer warranty stays intact provided the car is serviced to the maker’s own schedule using parts of the correct quality, and that holds wherever the work is carried out. European competition rules were written specifically so that drivers are not tied to a franchised dealer to keep their cover.

What protects you is the paperwork. We record the oil grade and approval, the filters fitted and the checks carried out, stamp the book, and keep our own copy, so there is a clear service history if anybody ever asks to see one.

Oil specification is where corners get cut elsewhere, and it is the one that matters most. We use the grade and approval your engine calls for rather than a general-purpose alternative.

Digital service records are handled the same way, so the history stays attached to the vehicle and shows up when a franchised dealer looks it up later. See car servicing.

Can a puncture be repaired, or do I need a new tyre?

A puncture can be repaired when the damage sits within the central three quarters of the tread, is no wider than 6mm, and the tyre has not been driven on flat. A proper repair is a combined plug and patch fitted from the inside after the tyre comes off the rim.

Damage in the shoulder or the sidewall cannot be repaired safely at any price, because that part of the tyre flexes constantly and no repair will hold. The same applies once a tyre has run flat, since the internal structure is already damaged even if it looks fine.

External plugs pushed in without removing the tyre are not a lasting repair and cannot be checked properly from outside.

We assess it where the car is and fit a replacement there if it is beyond saving. See puncture repair and mobile tyre fitting.

Do you work on electric and hybrid cars in Bebington?

Electric and hybrid vehicles are covered, and our technicians hold IMI Level 4 qualifications for high-voltage work, which is the level required to work safely on the orange-cabled systems rather than simply around them. Servicing, diagnostics, brakes and tyres are all handled the same way as any other car.

Electric cars wear their tyres faster because of the weight and the instant torque, so tread depths are worth watching more closely than on a petrol equivalent of the same age, and matching tyres across an axle matters more as well.

Their brakes have the opposite problem. Regenerative braking does so much of the slowing that the friction brakes are barely used, and calipers and sliders seize through lack of work rather than wear — something the salt air on this side of the Wirral makes considerably worse.

Both are checked as standard. See EV diagnostics Bebington and hybrid diagnostics.

Can I spread the cost of a car repair in Bebington?

Repairs can be spread over three, four or six months at 0% interest through Payment Assist. On amounts up to £1,000 the application is a soft credit search, which means asking leaves no mark on your credit file, and you get an answer while you are still on the phone.

The requirements are straightforward: you need to be 18 or over, a UK resident, and hold a debit card in your own name. The first instalment is taken at the time and the rest are collected monthly by direct debit on a date that suits you.

The one thing that catches people out is timing. It has to be arranged before the invoice is settled, so mention it in the first conversation rather than once the work is finished.

Ring 01744 808586 to set it up, or see pay monthly car repairs Bebington.

Do you service vans and work vehicles in Bebington?

Vans and work vehicles suit a mobile mechanic better than almost anything else, because the time off the road usually costs more than the repair. We service and repair them at the yard, the depot or the driver’s own address, and book the work around when the vehicle is actually free.

Van tyres are matched to the load rating stamped on the vehicle plate rather than just the size on the sidewall. Fitting a tyre rated below what the plate requires is both an MOT failure and a problem with your insurer.

For a business running several vehicles we stagger the servicing so the whole fleet is never off the road at once, and keep the records together for compliance. Intervals on a working van arrive faster than the calendar suggests, because the mileage stacks up so quickly.

The Bromborough estates are on our regular round. See commercial fleet repairs.

What happens if my car needs a ramp rather than a driveway?

Jobs needing the car lifted are collected from your Bebington address, carried out at our own workshop on Boundary Road, and the car is brought back to you afterwards. Collection and return are part of the job rather than something extra for you to arrange or pay for separately.

The work that genuinely needs a ramp is fairly short: clutches and dual-mass flywheels, timing belts, wet belts, gearbox internals, welding and anything requiring the suspension unloaded. An MOT belongs on that list too, since it must legally happen at an approved test centre.

Wet belts deserve a mention on smaller modern engines. The belt runs in the oil, and as it deteriorates it sheds material that blocks the oil pick-up strainer and starves the engine of pressure, so the interval is worth knowing.

Everything is priced before the car is collected, so you are never agreeing to an open-ended bill on a job you cannot watch. See clutch repair and gearbox repairs.

Which areas of Bebington do you cover?

We cover the whole of Bebington, including Higher Bebington, Lower Bebington, Port Sunlight, New Ferry, Spital, Poulton, Storeton, Thornton Hough and Clatterbridge, along with the industrial estates at Bromborough and Bromborough Pool. Give us a postcode and you get the next available slot back.

There is no premium for one part of Bebington over another. Vans work right across the North West and one of them covers this stretch of the Wirral, so a kerbside space in the village costs the same as a driveway up the hill.

Beyond Bebington the same service runs through Bromborough, Birkenhead, Heswall and Wallasey, which helps if you live one side of the water and work the other.

Hours are Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 12:30pm, and the same hours apply to callouts as to the workshop. Saturday mornings fill first. Ring 01744 808586.

Mobile mechanic Bebington · Before you ring us

What to have ready when you ring

Three things, and the call takes a couple of minutes.

The registration

The plate identifies the engine, the oil specification and the parts in one go. Make and model does the job if the reg is out of reach.

What it is doing, in your own words

The noise, when it happens, what the dashboard is showing. Plain description beats naming a part — a guess sends us out with the wrong thing loaded.

Where the car will be standing

Driveway, kerbside in the village, works car park, station car park. It changes what we bring and how much room we plan for.

One thing that genuinely does not help is somebody else’s quote. We would rather look at the car and price the fault in front of us than work backwards from a number attached to a different diagnosis.

Mobile mechanic Bebington · Give us a shout

Tell us where the car is and what it is doing

Give us the registration, what the car is doing, and whether it will be on a drive, at the kerb in the village or in a car park at work. You get back what it needs, the three figures, and the next slot we can reach you in. If it turns out to be something other than expected once we are there, you get a phone call before a spanner moves.

Fastlane Autocare, 232-254 Boundary Road, St Helens WA10 2PZ — our own workshop, with a DVSA-approved test centre on site. Monday to Friday 8:30am–5pm, Saturday 9am–12:30pm.
