A battery check that comes to the car
Plenty of places will check your battery for nothing. The catch is that you have to drive there to get it done, which is fine right up until the morning the car will not start — and that is usually the morning you actually want it checked.
We bring the test to wherever the car is in Widnes. On the drive, on the street, in the car park at work. The battery goes on a load test and the charging system is checked at the same time, and you are told which of the two is at fault before anybody talks about selling you anything.
If it does need replacing it is fitted on the spot, registered to the car where the electronics expect it, and the old one goes away with us at no extra charge. If it does not need replacing, you have had the check and that is the end of it.
If the engine turns over strongly and still will not fire, the battery is not your problem — see car won’t start in Widnes. Anything larger goes through our mobile mechanic service in Widnes.

The part that matters
A free check is no use if the car will not move
It is the oldest problem with a free battery check: it is offered at a counter, and a car with a dead battery cannot get to a counter.
By the time most people go looking for a battery check, the car has already given them a fright — a slow crank on a cold morning, or a dashboard that dipped when they turned the key. At that point the sensible thing is to have it tested where it stands, not to gamble on it starting again for the drive across town.
We test at the address, and the test is free whether you buy a battery from us or not. That includes the alternator output, which is the bit a quick counter check often skips and the bit that decides whether a new battery would actually solve anything.
If the car is already dead, that is not a problem either. It does not need to start for us to test it, and it does not need jumping or moving first.
What the check actually covers
Three readings, not one
A quick voltage reading tells you almost nothing — a tired battery will happily show 12.4 volts sitting still. We put it under a proper load to see what it does when the starter pulls on it, measure the alternator output to check the charge is going back in, and look for a drain if the car has been going flat while parked. Those three together are what tell you whether you need a battery or something else.

More than batteries
The same van covers the rest
Servicing, brakes, diagnostics and air con, carried out on your drive in Widnes rather than booked into a workshop you have to reach first.
When to get it checked
The signs worth acting on
Any of these is a reason to have it tested now rather than after it has stranded you.
Slow on the first start
Laboured first thing, fine for the rest of the day. That pattern is the earliest warning a battery gives, and it usually means a fortnight of grace rather than months.
Flat after standing a few days
A sound battery sits a fortnight and still starts. Dying over a long weekend means something is drawing current while the car is locked, and a new battery will not cure that.
Stop-start switched itself off
The car disables it as soon as the battery can no longer be relied on to restart the engine. It looks like a system fault and it is nearly always the battery.
Furred-up terminals
White or green crust on the posts adds resistance exactly where the battery has to shift the most current, so the car cranks slowly and never charges properly.
Lights dip as it turns over
Dashboard or headlights sagging while the starter works means voltage collapsing under load, which is the one test a resting voltmeter reading will never catch.
Past its fifth winter
Four to six years is a normal life. Beyond five, have it tested before the cold rather than after — we can do it at the door.
Electric and hybrid
We take on EVs and hybrids, which is not a given
Several of the national chains will not book a battery job on an electric or hybrid car at all. We do, and it is worth knowing the difference between the two batteries involved.
Every hybrid and EV still has an ordinary 12 volt battery, and it does far more than people realise — it wakes the car up and brings the high-voltage system online. When it dies the car is completely dead, even with a drive battery in perfect health, and it looks far more alarming than it is. That is a job we do at your address like any other.
The high-voltage drive battery is a different discipline and it does not belong at the kerbside. If the testing points that way it moves to hybrid diagnostics, or across to EV diagnostics for a full electric.
Tell us the make and what the dashboard is doing when you ring, and we will tell you which of the two you are dealing with before anyone sets off.

Mobile battery fitting Widnes
Mobile battery fitting Widnes: the numbers
Nothing padded, and no arrival time we cannot honour.
Keeps going flat?
Then the battery is the symptom
A car that dies every few days has something drawing current while it is locked. We can measure that with the car asleep and trace the circuit behind it.
Payment Assist
When the check finds more than a battery
Sometimes the honest answer is that the alternator is on its way out, and that is a bigger number than anyone was expecting. Payment Assist splits it into monthly instalments on a soft credit search only, so nothing is marked on your file. Move the slider for a rough shape, then we will give you the real figure once it has been looked at.
Widnes · worth knowing
Winter is when a marginal battery finally gives up
A battery loses a good chunk of its available power as the temperature drops, while the engine it has to turn over gets stiffer at exactly the same time. So a battery that has been quietly weak since September copes fine through autumn and then fails on the first properly cold morning, which is why the calls all arrive in the same week.
Short runs make it worse. A drive across town or over the bridge and back does not put back what starting the engine took out, particularly with lights, heater and heated screen all drawing at once. Do that all winter and the battery slowly loses ground while still starting every day.
That is the argument for having it checked in October rather than January. It costs nothing to know, and it is the difference between choosing when to replace it and finding out on a morning you needed to be somewhere.

Mobile battery fitting Widnes: what people ask
That is the point of it. The test comes to the car, so you are not gambling on it starting again for a drive across town to get it looked at. Driveway, street, work car park — anywhere there is safe room to get round the vehicle is fine. The car does not even need to start for us to test it. If it is already dead on the drive that changes nothing about the visit. Ring 01744 808586 and tell us roughly where it is sitting.
Free whether you buy a battery from us or not, with no call-out charge attached to it either. We would rather tell you the battery is healthy and be the people you ring next time than sell you something today that was never going to fix the problem. If the check does show it needs replacing you get the full figure before anything happens, and nothing is fitted until you have said yes. If it shows the fault is elsewhere, that is a separate diagnostic job and quoted as one.
Three things, not one. The battery goes under a proper load to see what it does when the starter pulls on it, the alternator output is measured to confirm charge is going back in, and if the car has been going flat while parked we look for a drain as well. A single voltage reading is close to useless on its own — a worn battery will sit there showing 12.4 volts quite happily and still collapse the second it is asked to do any work. It is the load and the charging side that give you the answer, and it is the same test we run on any battery replacement.
Taking the old battery away is free and always has been. It leaves with us for proper recycling and it is inside the price we quote, rather than appearing at the end as a separate disposal fee once the work is finished. It is a small item but it is exactly the sort of thing that quietly lands on a bill elsewhere, so it is worth checking for when you compare. Everything in our figure — the test, the battery, fitting, coding and disposal — is agreed on the phone first. See what a fitting includes.
Yes, and that is not a given — several of the national chains will not book a battery job on an electric or hybrid at all. Every one of them still has an ordinary 12 volt battery, and when that dies the whole car is dead even with a perfectly healthy drive battery. That 12 volt battery we replace at your address like any other. The high-voltage side is a different discipline and goes through hybrid diagnostics or EV diagnostics instead.
On both counts. The battery carries the manufacturer’s own cover, which runs up to five years on some of the ranges we fit, and our own twelve months sits on top of that covering the fitting work — so whichever side of it fails, it is one phone call. That is well beyond the two years a lot of the high-street offers stop at. We fit Yuasa, Exide and Bosch rather than unbranded stock for exactly that reason. Keep your paperwork and ring 01744 808586 if there is ever an issue.
Then you have had a free check and you keep your money. A healthy battery that keeps going flat is being drained by something else, and the usual culprits are a failing alternator or an accessory still drawing current after the car is locked and left. Fitting a battery to either would buy you a fortnight and solve nothing. Finding a drain means metering the circuits with the car properly asleep, which is a diagnostic booking rather than a part, and you would hear that before it became one.
The car decides. We take the fitment and cranking figures from the registration, then check them against the battery actually in there, because the two do not always match and a previous cheap swap is often why it has failed early. Stop-start cars need EFB or AGM depending on whether they also recover energy under braking. Everything else takes a standard flooded battery. All three types are on the van, so nothing has to be ordered in and brought back another day — the same stock goes into our workshop fittings.
Around half an hour door to door, and the testing beforehand takes longer than the swap itself. Undoing two terminals and a clamp is quick work; establishing that the battery is genuinely the fault is the part that is actually worth paying for. Awkward locations stretch it — under a seat, below a boot floor, behind a wheel arch liner — and you hear about that when you ring rather than at the kerb. A battery and a tyre can be done in the same visit.
A memory saver holds a live feed into the car while the old battery is out, so the radio presets, clock, seat positions and everything the modules have learned are all still there when you next get in. A couple of makes want a quick relearn afterwards, usually a window that needs re-teaching its travel, and that gets done before we leave rather than turning up as a problem next week. Anything needing a code only you hold, you are told about while we are still stood at the car. Ring 01744 808586.
Yes, both EFB and AGM, and we carry them rather than ordering them in after seeing the car. Which one your car takes depends on whether it also recovers energy under braking, and putting a standard battery into either is the quickest way to be buying another one within the year. The registering afterwards matters just as much. A stop-start car has to be told it has a new battery, or the charging system carries on running the profile it learned for the old worn one. It is part of the fitting, not an extra — see how we fit and register a battery.
Yes, and the car does not need to start for us to test it. A dead car on the drive is the normal situation we turn up to, so there is no need to jump it, roll it or get it running before we arrive. Tell us what it did last time you tried the key, because that alone narrows it down: one click with the lights dimming points at the battery, an engine spinning over strongly and never firing points elsewhere. More on what to do when your car will not start.
Yes, through Payment Assist, which uses a soft credit search rather than a hard one, so it leaves no footprint on your file for other lenders to see. It applies across the whole job including diagnosis and labour, not only the part itself. Most people who use it are the ones whose check turned up an alternator behind the battery. There is a full explanation on pay monthly car repairs, or just ask when you ring.
Runcorn, Warrington, Penketh, Great Sankey, Frodsham, Prescot, St Helens, Huyton, Speke, Knowsley, Liverpool and Northwich are all on the regular run, so Widnes sits right in the middle of the patch and the van is through here most days. If your street is not named it is still worth ringing, because it usually comes down to where we already are that morning. Each has its own page — battery fitting in Runcorn, for one.
