Mercedes Service A St Helens
Service A and Service B alternate. A is the lighter of the two, and it still has to be done properly — correct-specification oil, genuine filters, and the ASSYST indicator reset so your digital service record stays intact.

WHERE TO START
What is a Mercedes Service A?
A Mercedes Service A is the lighter of the two services Mercedes alternates between. It is a defined schedule, not a cut-down job — the deeper items simply come round on the alternating Mercedes B Service.
Mercedes runs A, then B, then A again, roughly one per year depending on how the car is driven. Which one you are due is decided by the car itself through ASSYST, not by the calendar.
WHAT YOU GET
What is included in a Mercedes Service A
A Mercedes Service A at Fastlane Autocare in St Helens includes the following, every time:
- Engine oil and oil filter: oil to the Mercedes specification for your engine, not a generic barrel grade, with a genuine-quality filter fitted every service.
- All fluid levels checked and corrected: coolant, brake fluid, power steering where fitted, and screen wash.
- Tyre condition and pressures: tread depth across all four, uneven wear investigated and pressures set correctly.
- Brake component inspection: pads and discs measured against the manufacturer wear limit with a gauge, so you are told how much life is left.
- ASSYST service indicator reset and your digital service record updated, so the history stays intact.
- A full visual inspection: lights, wipers, suspension, steering, exhaust and underbody, with anything found reported to you before any work is done.

What Service A does not include is the cabin dust filter and the fuller inspection, which come round on Mercedes B Service. See Mercedes servicing.

A OR B
Mercedes Service A vs Service B: what is the difference?
They alternate, and B is the deeper of the two.
The difference is depth, not quality. Both are proper services; B simply reaches further.
- Service A — oil and oil filter, all fluid levels, tyres, brake inspection, ASSYST reset.
- Service B — everything in A, plus the cabin dust filter and a more comprehensive inspection. Brake fluid is normally handled here too.
- They alternate. If your last one was B, your next is A. If your last was A, your next is B.
- The car decides when, not the calendar alone. ASSYST works out the interval from how the car is actually driven.
- Both keep the digital service record intact when done properly and logged. That is what protects the car’s value.
Not sure which you are due? Send the registration on 01744 808586 and we will tell you. See Mercedes B Service for the deeper service.
ASSYST
What is ASSYST and how does it decide?
The system that works out which service your Mercedes needs.
ASSYST is the Mercedes Active Service System. It is why two identical cars can be due at different times.
- It calculates from how the car is driven — mileage, engine hours, cold starts, journey length and load, not just a fixed date.
- It tells you which service is next, A or B, and counts down in days or miles on the driver display.
- It must be reset properly after the work. A reset without the service does nothing except hide the reminder.
- On later cars it writes to the digital service record, which is what a main dealer or buyer will look at rather than a paper stamp.
- Short journeys shorten the interval. A car doing lots of cold starts will ask for its service sooner, and that is correct behaviour rather than a fault.
If your display is showing a service due, ring 01744 808586 with the registration and we will tell you which one it is asking for. See Mercedes diagnostics.
How your Service A runs
What we do, in order
-
Check the schedule for your car
Model, year and engine, because the Service A list is not identical across the range and the oil specification certainly is not.
-
Oil, oil filter and cabin filter
Drained warm, correct-specification oil in, and the cabin filter changed rather than blown through.
-
Brake fluid exchanged
Bled through properly until clean fluid comes out at every corner, which is the whole point of the job.
-
Full inspection
Brakes measured, tyres, suspension, exhaust, lights and fluids, and a look underneath at what is starting rather than what has already failed.
-
You get a call before anything extra
If the inspection turns something up you get told what it is, what it costs and whether it can wait. Nothing is added on your behalf.
-
Indicator reset and the work recorded
ASSYST reset, the service written into your history, and the car road tested before you get it back.
WARRANTY
Does an independent Service A affect my Mercedes warranty?
The legal position, plainly.
- No, provided it is done to the Mercedes schedule with the correct oil specification and matching-quality parts, and properly documented.
- Block Exemption Regulation gives you the right to service outside the dealer network without losing your warranty.
- What matters is the record. The work must be logged and the ASSYST indicator reset so the digital history reflects it.
- We keep the history intact — that is what protects resale value, and it is what cheap servicing gets wrong.
- Where a claim genuinely needs the dealer, we will tell you plainly rather than have you find out later.

Mercedes diagnostics St Helens — paying over time
Repairs never arrive in a convenient month
Nobody plans for the fault they did not know they had. Whatever the diagnosis turns into can be spread across four months at nought per cent through pay monthly car repairs, decided on a soft search that does not mark your credit file.

Already had a part fitted and the fault is back?
Tell us what was replaced and what the car is doing now. On a Mercedes that is very often a coding step nobody completed, and it is a short conversation rather than another part. If it will not start at all, our mobile mechanics can come to you.
Mercedes diagnostics St Helens — the short version
Six numbers behind the testing
Figures that decide what we look at first, and what we refuse to guess at.
Mercedes diagnostics St Helens — where owners drive in from
Mercedes owners come a long way for coding
Boundary Road sits a couple of minutes from the A58 and the Linkway. Most of the borough is a short run in, and plenty of Mercedes come from a good deal further for the coding work.
Mercedes also come over from Wigan and Liverpool, usually because a part has already been fitted somewhere else and the fault came straight back.

Worth knowing
What the number after the letter means
ASSYST PLUS does not just say Service B. It says B1, B4, B7 and so on, and the number tells the workshop which extra items fall due at that particular visit alongside the standard list.
Those extras are things on longer cycles — an air filter, spark plugs, a fuel filter on a diesel, a transmission oil and filter service, and so on. It is why one Service A can cost noticeably more than the last one, on the same car, with nothing having gone wrong.
So if you are ringing round for a price, the number matters as much as the letter. Give us the full message off the dash and the registration and you will get a figure that still means something when you arrive.
Mercedes diagnostics St Helens — while your car is with us
You do not have to sit and wait for it
Proper fault finding is not a ten minute job, and the honest ones take longer than the quick ones. Boundary Road is a few minutes from the town centre, so most people drop the car and carry on with the day.
Church Square and the town centre shops are a short walk if you want a coffee while we work, Taylor Park and Sherdley Park are a couple of minutes away by car, and the World of Glass is worth an hour if you have never been. St Helens Central is close enough to walk to if you are heading on somewhere.
Tell us when you book if collection would suit you better. Where a fault only shows itself warm or on a longer run we will keep the car rather than hand it back with a maybe, and you get a phone call with what we have found before anything is done to it. If it turns into a bigger job it can go on pay monthly car repairs, and you can pair it with a Mercedes MOT or a service so the car only comes in once.
A photo and a registration is usually enough to start
Send the dashboard, the model and roughly what the car is doing. A technician replies with what it is likely to be and whether it is safe to drive in.

Tell us what changed and when it started
Engine, mileage, and what was different just before the warning appeared. That is genuinely the most useful thing you can give us, and it often shortens the job before the car arrives.

Owner questions
Mercedes Service A questions, answered
Twenty questions Mercedes owners ask about Service A. If yours is not here, ring 01744 808586.
It is the lighter of the two services Mercedes alternates between. Engine oil and oil filter to the Mercedes specification, all fluid levels checked and corrected, tyres, a brake inspection and the ASSYST indicator reset.
It is a defined schedule rather than a cut-down job. The deeper items come round on the alternating Mercedes B Service. Ring 01744 808586 with the registration and we will confirm which you are due.
Depth. Service B includes everything in A plus the cabin dust filter and a more comprehensive inspection, and brake fluid is normally handled at B.
They alternate, so if your last was B your next is A. Both keep the digital service record intact when logged properly. See Mercedes B Service.
Roughly annually, but the car decides rather than the calendar. ASSYST calculates the interval from how the vehicle is actually driven.
Short journeys and cold starts shorten it, which is correct behaviour rather than a fault. Send the registration to 01744 808586 and we will tell you what yours is asking for. See Mercedes servicing.
Yes. Servicing outside the dealer network does not void your warranty provided the Mercedes schedule is followed with the correct specification parts and the work is documented.
What matters is that the record is kept and the service indicator reset properly. See Mercedes specialist.
Yes, as part of the service. Resetting it is not an optional extra and it is not something to do without carrying out the work.
On later cars the reset writes to the digital service record, which is what a buyer or main dealer will look at rather than a paper stamp. See Mercedes diagnostics.
The oil specification your engine actually calls for, not a generic barrel grade. Mercedes specifies particular approvals by engine and they are not interchangeable.
Using the wrong specification is one of the few ways a cheap service genuinely costs you later. Ring 01744 808586 with the registration and we will confirm what yours takes. See Mercedes diagnostics.
Normally no — brake fluid runs on its own interval and is usually handled at Service B. It is roughly a two-yearly item regardless of which service is due.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time whatever the mileage, so it is worth asking about rather than assuming. See Mercedes servicing.
A set figure quoted on the phone once we know the model and engine, because the oil specification and quantity vary considerably across the range.
It folds into any work that follows rather than being charged twice. For larger bills there is Payment Assist. See car service cost.
Yes, and it saves a second visit. The DVSA test bay is on this site, so anything the test would fail on gets found and put right in the same booking.
That matters more on a Mercedes than most, since a lit warning lamp fails the test outright. See Mercedes MOT.
The display will normally tell you whether A or B is next, along with a countdown in days or miles. If it is not clear, the registration will settle it.
Ring 01744 808586 and we will tell you which service the car is asking for and what it involves. See car servicing in St Helens.
You get the number before anything is done, not after. Nothing beyond the service schedule is carried out without your say-so.
If it is a fault rather than a wear item we will read the car properly rather than guess. See Mercedes diagnostics.
Across the range, petrol and diesel, along with the AMG and 4MATIC variants. Some models carry extra items such as transfer case oil.
Tell us the model and registration when you ring and we will confirm exactly what yours is due. See Mercedes specialist.
Most are done within the working day, and many inside half a day depending on what the inspection turns up.
Tell us when you book if you need the car back by a particular time and we will plan around it. See Mercedes servicing.
Generally yes, because B adds the cabin dust filter and a fuller inspection on top of everything in A.
That does not make A a lesser job — it is a defined schedule. See Mercedes B Service for what the deeper one adds, and car service cost.
The car keeps counting and the next reminder arrives sooner. More importantly the oil stays in beyond its intended life, which is where real engine wear comes from.
It also leaves a gap in the digital service record, which a buyer or a main dealer will see. See Mercedes servicing.
Genuine or matching-quality parts that meet the Mercedes specification, which is what protects your warranty position.
If you specifically want genuine Mercedes parts throughout, say so when booking and we will price it that way. Ring 01744 808586. See car servicing in St Helens.
Yes, provided the schedule was followed with correct-specification parts and the work was properly recorded, which is how we do it.
The ASSYST reset writes to the digital record on later cars, which is what the dealer actually reads. See Mercedes specialist.
That is ASSYST telling you a service is approaching, with the days or mileage remaining. It will normally say whether A or B is next.
It is a reminder rather than a fault. If a warning light is on alongside it, that is different. See Mercedes diagnostics.
Yes. AMG models use a different oil specification and often a shorter interval, so the registration matters more than usual.
Tell us it is an AMG when you ring and we will quote it correctly rather than adjusting later. See Mercedes specialist.
Booking is better, because we confirm from your registration whether it is an A or a B and make sure the right oil and filters are here.
Turning up risks us not having your specification in stock. Ring 01744 808586 or send the reg. See Mercedes MOT to combine it with a test.
