Twelve months from the date of the test. A brand new car does not need one until it is three years old, and then it is every twelve months after that.

You can test it up to a month minus a day early and keep the same renewal date — a certificate running out on 14 June can be tested from 15 May and still expire on 14 June next year. Leave it later and you lose those days for good.

No — with two exceptions: driving to a pre-booked MOT test, or driving to repair work arranged because of a failure. Anything else risks a fine of up to £1,000, and your insurer can treat the policy as invalid.

An expired MOT is not the same as a failed one. If it has expired you can still drive to a booked test. If it has failed with a dangerous defect, it must not be driven at all.

It depends where the damage is. In the driver’s line of sight — a 290mm strip centred on the steering wheel, known as zone A — anything larger than 10mm is a fail. Across the rest of the area swept by the wipers the limit is 40mm.

Chips outside those zones usually pass, but they spread. A chip that passes this year is often next year’s failure, and a repair costs a fraction of a new screen.

Yes. A lit airbag or SRS warning light is an automatic MOT failure — it has been a testable item since 2012, and no tester can pass the car with the light on.

The light is usually the cheap part. It is most often a seat belt pre-tensioner, a crash sensor or a corroded connector under a seat, and it needs reading properly rather than guessing at.

The car is driven onto rolling road brake testers that measure the force each wheel produces individually. The tester looks at total braking efficiency and at the balance between left and right on the same axle.

A car can stop perfectly well on the road and still fail on imbalance — one sticking caliper or a lazy handbrake cable is enough. It is why brakes are one of the most common failures of all.

Brakes, tyres and wheels, steering and suspension, lights and headlamp aim, exhaust and emissions, the windscreen, wipers and washers, mirrors, seat belts, the horn, number plates, the fuel system, and the structure of the car for corrosion or damage.

It is a safety and emissions test at one moment in time, not a service. It does not look at the engine, the clutch or the gearbox, and it tells you nothing about how the car will hold up over the next year.
