Knocking Noise Over Bumps: The Likely Causes

A knock or clunk that shows up when you go over a pothole, speed bump or rough road is one of the most common suspension complaints we hear. The good news is that the usual suspects are well known and, in most cases, straightforward to fix. Here are the parts that cause it most often, roughly in order of how frequently we find them.

🔗

Drop Links & Bushes

By far the most common cause. The drop links connect the anti-roll bar to the suspension, and when the small ball joints or the anti-roll bar bushes wear, they knock over every bump. Usually an affordable, quick fix.

🛞

Shocks & Top Mounts

Worn shock absorbers or struts, and the rubber top mounts they sit in, can knock and clonk as the suspension moves. Tired shocks also make the car feel bouncy and floaty, and are an MOT concern if leaking.

⚙

Ball Joints & Bushes

Worn ball joints and perished suspension arm bushes create play in the joints, which knocks over bumps. Ball joints in particular are a safety item, so these get checked and quoted honestly.

Should I keep driving it?

Knocking Noise Over Bumps: Is It Safe To Drive?

Often driveable, but get it checked soon

If the noise is a light knock from a worn drop link, the car is usually still safe to drive in the short term, drop links themselves aren't a critical structural part. That said, the knocking won't fix itself and will only get worse, so it's best booked in sooner rather than later before it wears other parts.

Where it becomes more urgent is if the knock is coming from a ball joint, a shock absorber mount or a suspension arm bush. These carry real loads, and if they fail they can affect steering, braking and how the car sits on the road. If the noise is loud, getting worse quickly, or you also feel vibration, a wandering steering wheel or clunking when you turn, don't put it off, book it in.

The honest answer is that you can't be certain which part it is from the driver's seat, and that's exactly why we road test and ramp check every car. Tell us what you're hearing and when, and we'll advise whether it's safe to keep driving until your appointment.

What happens if you ignore it?

Knocking Noise Over Bumps: What It Can Lead To

A knock over bumps is your car telling you something is worn. Left long enough, a cheap fix can turn into a bigger, more expensive one, and in the worst cases into a safety problem. These are the things a neglected suspension knock tends to lead to.

Uneven Tyre WearWorn suspension lets the wheels move out of line, scrubbing your tyres.
MOT FailureExcess play, splits or leaks are common MOT failures.
Poorer HandlingThe car feels vague, bouncy and less planted over rough roads.
Knock-On DamageOne worn part strains its neighbours, spreading the wear.
Failed JointA neglected ball joint can eventually break, which is dangerous.

How do you find the cause?

Knocking Noise Over Bumps: How We Diagnose & Fix It

⚠ A knock is a symptom, not a diagnosis

Guessing at suspension noise wastes your money, so we don't. We start with a road test to hear exactly when and where the knock happens, over sharp bumps, on turns, under braking, then put the car on the ramp for a proper inspection. On the ramp we can grab and lever each component to feel for play in the drop links, ball joints, bushes, track rods and shock mounts, which is the only reliable way to pin the noise down.

Once we've found the worn part, we tell you what it is, whether it's a safety or MOT concern, and give you a clear price before any work starts. Most suspension repairs, drop links especially, are same-day jobs. If the fault is trickier to trace, our vehicle diagnostics team can dig deeper, and we'll always steer you to our suspension and steering repairs for the fix.

Worth knowing: after replacing suspension parts we'll usually recommend a wheel alignment check, because worn components often knock the tracking out and fresh parts are the perfect time to set it right.

Knocking Noise Over Bumps: Road Test & Ramp Check

We take the time to find the real cause rather than throwing parts at it. A short road test tells us when the knock appears, then the ramp lets us physically check every suspension joint and bush for wear, so the part we replace is the part that's actually knocking. Nothing gets done without your say-so and a price agreed first.

If the knock turns up during your MOT, worn suspension is one of the most common advisories and failures we see, so getting it looked at early means it can be put right before test day. Once repaired, a quick wheel alignment keeps your tyres wearing evenly and the car tracking straight.

Why the knock changes with the road

Knocking Noise Over Bumps: Reading The Clues

When and where it knocks tells us a lot

The character of the noise is a genuine clue. A sharp, metallic knock over small bumps and at low speed often points to worn drop links. A duller clonk from bigger bumps or dips can be shock absorbers, top mounts or tired bushes. A knock that appears mainly when you turn or manoeuvre can be a ball joint or track rod end, which are steering-critical and get priority.

It's not something to diagnose by ear alone though, because different worn parts can sound very similar and more than one can be worn at once. That's why we always back up the road test with a hands-on ramp inspection. Note down when you hear it, over bumps, on corners, under braking, and mention it when you book, it genuinely helps us zero in faster.

Knocking Noise Over Bumps FAQ

Knocking Noise Over Bumps: FAQ

Real, in-depth answers to what people actually ask about a suspension knock over bumps.

What causes a knocking noise over bumps?

The most common cause of a knocking noise over bumps is worn drop links or anti-roll bar bushes, which is usually an affordable, quick fix. Other regular culprits are tired shock absorbers or struts, worn top mounts, ball joints and perished suspension arm bushes.

Because several parts can sound alike, and more than one can be worn at once, the only reliable way to know is a road test followed by a ramp inspection. That's exactly what we do before quoting any work.

Is it safe to drive with a knocking noise over bumps?

If it's a light knock from a worn drop link, the car is usually safe to drive in the short term, but it won't fix itself and will get worse, so it's best booked in soon. If the knock comes from a ball joint, shock mount or suspension bush, it's more urgent because these carry real loads and affect steering and handling.

You can't be sure which part it is from the driver's seat, so if the noise is loud, worsening quickly, or paired with vibration or a wandering steering wheel, get it checked promptly. Tell us what you're hearing and we'll advise.

What are drop links and why do they knock?

Drop links, sometimes called anti-roll bar links, are the short rods that connect the anti-roll bar to the suspension. They have small ball joints at each end, and when those wear the link develops play and knocks over bumps, typically a sharp metallic noise at low speed.

They're one of the hardest-working small parts on the car, so they're a common wear item, especially on our rougher local roads. The upside is that replacing them is usually quick and one of the more affordable suspension jobs.

Will a knocking noise over bumps fail the MOT?

It can. Worn suspension is one of the most common reasons for MOT advisories and failures. Excessive play in a ball joint, track rod end or suspension bush, or a leaking shock absorber, are all failure points, while lesser wear may come up as an advisory to keep an eye on.

Getting a knock investigated before your MOT means anything failing can be put right ahead of the test rather than costing you a retest. We're happy to check it and your MOT in the same visit.

Can worn shock absorbers cause a knock over bumps?

Yes. Worn shock absorbers or struts, and the rubber top mounts they sit in, can knock and clonk as the suspension compresses over bumps. Tired shocks also tend to make the car feel bouncy or floaty, and can cause the nose to dive more under braking.

Leaking shock absorbers are also an MOT concern. On the ramp we can check for weeping, play in the mounts and how the shock behaves, so we can tell you whether they're genuinely the cause of your knock or if it's coming from elsewhere.

How do you diagnose a knocking noise over bumps?

We start with a road test to hear exactly when and where the knock happens, over sharp bumps, on turns or under braking. Then the car goes on the ramp, where we can grab and lever each component to feel for play in the drop links, ball joints, bushes, track rods and shock mounts.

That hands-on check is the only reliable way to pin down a knock, because parts can sound alike and more than one may be worn. If it's especially elusive, our diagnostics team can go deeper before we quote.

How much does it cost to fix a suspension knock?

It depends entirely on which part is worn and your vehicle. Drop links are one of the cheaper, quicker fixes, while shock absorbers, ball joints or arms with bushes cost more as they involve more parts and labour. Because of that, we won't quote blind, we diagnose first and then give you a clear, upfront price.

Tell us your make, model and what you're hearing and we'll guide you, and you can spread the cost with our Payment Assist option over 3, 4 or 6 monthly payments at 0% interest, no hard credit check for bills up to £1,000.

Could the knocking noise be something other than suspension?

Occasionally, yes. While suspension is by far the most common source of a knock over bumps, other causes can include a loose exhaust heat shield rattling, worn steering components, or a loose subframe or brake caliper. That's why we don't assume, we road test and inspect to be sure.

A proper check rules out the alternatives and makes sure the part we replace is the one actually causing your noise, so you don't pay for a guess.

Does a suspension knock affect wheel alignment or tyre wear?

It can. Worn suspension and steering parts allow the wheels to move out of their set position, which knocks the tracking out and causes uneven or premature tyre wear. Fixing the knock is step one, and it's also the ideal moment to reset the geometry.

After replacing suspension parts we'll usually recommend a wheel alignment check to make sure everything tracks straight, protecting your new parts and your tyres.

How long does it take to fix a knocking noise?

Many suspension repairs are same-day jobs. Drop links in particular are quick, and most common parts can be replaced within a few hours once we've diagnosed the cause and you've approved the price. Bigger jobs, or ones where a part has to be ordered in, may take a little longer.

Let us know if you need the car back by a certain time, or if you're combining the repair with an MOT, and we'll work around you when you book.
