Generator servicing North West · Found before it is quoted

Generator servicing and repairs, at your site or in our workshop

Most generators we see are one of two jobs. Either the set has stood unused for months and will not start on the day it is finally needed, or it starts fine and then drops out the moment anything is asked of it. Both are worth understanding properly before anyone talks about replacing a generator.

We handle generator servicing and generator repairs on diesel, petrol and portable sets across the North West. Small units are usually easiest brought to the workshop on Boundary Road, where we have the tooling and the bench space to strip something properly. Larger standby sets are worked on where they stand, because taking them anywhere is more trouble than the job itself. When you ring, tell us the make and roughly the size and we will tell you which of the two makes sense.

What we do not do is supply and install new generators, and we do not offer load bank testing. If that is what you need, we will say so rather than take the booking. What we do is servicing, scheduled maintenance, and fault finding and repair on sets that are already yours.

The fault-finding side is the same discipline as any other diagnostic work we do — establish what is actually wrong before ordering parts. A generator that will not start has a short list of causes, and most of them are cheaper than the assumption people arrive with. We also look after plant and site equipment and carry out PAT testing, so if the generator is one item on a yard full of kit, it can all be looked at in one visit.

Generator servicing North West · Before you write the set off

A generator that will not start is usually fuel, not the engine

When a standby set fails on the day it is wanted, the engine itself is rarely the problem. Diesel that has sat for a year picks up water and grows contamination, filters block, and the lift pump pulls air instead of fuel. Batteries are the other half of it: a starting battery that has trickled flat over eighteen months will crank slowly, the set will not fire, and it gets blamed on the engine. Neither of those is an expensive repair, but both need finding before anyone quotes for a replacement generator.

The same goes for a set that starts and then cuts out under load. That points at fuel delivery, a blocked filter, an air leak on the suction side, or a governor that is not holding revs. It is a diagnosis, not a guess, and it is why we would rather look at it than quote down the phone.

Generator servicing North West · How we work

What happens when you book a generator in

Four steps. Nothing gets ordered until someone has actually looked at the set.

MICS Nexys generator control panel used when diagnosing a standby diesel generator fault
The control panel is where a standby set tells you what it thinks is wrong. It is the start of the diagnosis, not the end of it.
  1. Tell us the make, the size and what it does

A standby set that will not crank is a different visit to a portable that runs rough. Knowing the make, roughly the kVA and what you are seeing tells us whether to come to you or ask you to bring it in, and what to bring with us.

  2. Fuel, filters and battery checked first

These are the causes that account for most no-start calls, so they get ruled in or out before anything is stripped. Contaminated diesel, a blocked filter, air on the suction side, a starting battery that has gone flat standing.

  3. You get told what it is and what it costs

Before any parts are ordered you get a plain explanation of what we found and a price for putting it right. If the sensible answer is that the set is not worth repairing, you will hear that too.

  4. Serviced, run up and left working

A service covers oil and filters, fuel filtration, air filter, belts, coolant and the starting battery. Then the set is run up and checked under its own load so you know it actually works, not just that it started once.

Generator servicing North West · What we actually do

Six jobs, not one

“The generator has packed in” covers six different jobs with six different bills. This is how we separate them.

Diesel generator servicing

Oil and oil filter, fuel filters and water trap, air filter, belts, hoses and coolant condition, plus the starting battery and charge circuit. The set is run up afterwards and checked under load.

Petrol and portable sets

Smaller units are usually quicker and cheaper to put right than people expect. Carburettor cleaning, fuel system flushing after standing, plugs, oil and recoil or electric start faults.

Will not start

The short list first: contaminated or stale fuel, a blocked filter, air on the suction side, a flat or failing starting battery, and glow or heater circuits on diesel sets. Found before anything is ordered.

Starts then cuts out under load

Almost always fuel delivery rather than the engine. Restricted filters, a weak lift pump, an air leak, or a governor not holding revs as the load comes on. It is diagnosed, not guessed at.

Charging and battery faults

A standby set that has trickled flat over a winter will crank slowly and get blamed on the engine. We test the battery, the charger and the charge circuit as a system rather than swapping the battery and hoping.

Generator maintenance schedules

If the set exists so that something keeps running when the power goes, it needs a schedule rather than a phone call on the day. We will work to yours or set out a sensible interval for how the set is actually used.

Generator maintenance · Planned, not panicked

Generator maintenance is what stops the call-out

A set that only gets looked at when it fails has already cost you the thing it was bought to prevent.

Generator maintenance and generator servicing are much the same work; the difference is when it happens. A service is the job. Maintenance is doing it on a schedule that suits how the set is actually used, so the fuel never gets old enough to cause trouble and the starting battery never gets flat enough to matter.

For a standby set that sits waiting, once a year is usually right, with a proper run-up under load rather than a ten-second start. For anything working regularly, hours matter more than months and the handbook interval is the one to follow. Either way we will work to a schedule you already have, or set out a sensible one based on the size of the set, the fuel it runs on and what it is protecting.

That applies equally to generator repairs. If something is found during maintenance you will hear what it is and what it costs before any work is done, and you can decide whether it gets sorted now or at the next visit. The point of a schedule is that you are choosing the timing rather than the generator choosing it for you. Tell us what you have on 01744 808586.

Generator servicing North West · Where we come out to

We come to the set, or the set comes to us

Which one makes sense is usually decided by size and by whether the generator is bolted down.

Portable and small petrol sets are simplest brought in. There is no call-out to pay for, the tooling is all here, and if something needs stripping it gets done properly on a bench rather than on a wet yard. Boundary Road is a few minutes off the A58 and the Linkway, and you can drop a small set off on the way to work.

Standby and larger diesel sets are worked on where they stand. That covers St Helens and the rest of Merseyside, Warrington and Runcorn, Widnes, Wigan, Newton-le-Willows and Haydock, out to Manchester, Liverpool, Cheshire and into Lancashire. If you are further out than that, ring and ask rather than assume — it depends on the week and on what the job needs.

Runcorn and Manchester are the two areas we get asked about most, usually for backup sets on industrial units that have not been touched since they were installed. Those are worth a first service and a proper run-up before they are relied on, not after. The same van does plant work in Warrington and across Merseyside, so a generator and the rest of the yard can be looked at on the same visit.

For businesses running vehicles as well as standby power, it is often the same conversation — see commercial and fleet repairs. And if the set powers a workshop or a site office, PAT testing on what it feeds is worth doing at the same time.

Areas we cover for generator work

Small sets come to Boundary Road. Larger standby sets are worked on where they stand, across Merseyside, Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Lancashire.

Generator servicing North West · Did you know

Diesel goes off, and that is what kills most standby sets

Red diesel and ordinary road diesel both degrade in storage. Within about a year you get water dropping out of suspension and microbial growth at the fuel-water boundary — the black sludge that blocks filters. A standby generator that has sat with a half-full tank for two winters is the classic case: it has not failed, its fuel has. Running the set up properly every few months and keeping the tank full rather than half empty prevents most of it, which is the real argument for a maintenance schedule rather than a call-out when it matters.

Generator servicing North West · FAQs

Questions we get asked about generators

Every one of these is something people actually type into Google before they ring a garage. Answered properly, not in one line.

What does a generator service include?

A full service covers oil and oil filter, fuel filters and the water trap, the air filter, belts, hoses and coolant condition, plus the starting battery and charge circuit.

Then the set is run up and checked while it is actually doing some work, because a generator that starts on the button can still fall over the moment load is applied. On vehicle-mounted sets we also check the mountings and the exhaust route, the same way we would on any plant or site equipment. You get told what was found and what, if anything, needs doing next, before any extra work is carried out. Call 01744 808586 to book one in.

How often should a generator be serviced?

For most standby sets, once a year or at the hours interval in the handbook, whichever comes first.

Hours matter more than the calendar on anything working regularly, and the calendar matters more on a set that mostly sits waiting. A standby generator that runs for ten minutes a month still needs an annual service, because the things that spoil it are fuel degradation and a flat starting battery rather than wear. If a set is genuinely critical — standby power for a business, or a generator on commercial vehicles — a shorter interval and a proper run-up under load is money well spent.

My generator will not start. What is usually wrong?

Nine times out of ten it is fuel or the starting battery, not the engine.

Diesel that has stood for a year picks up water and contamination, filters block, and the lift pump draws air instead of fuel. The other half is a starting battery that has quietly gone flat over months of standing, so the set cranks slowly and never fires. Both are ordinary repairs. It is worth having it looked at properly before anybody quotes you for a replacement generator, because the assumption people arrive with is usually more expensive than the fault. See our approach to diagnostics.

Why does my generator start and then cut out under load?

That points at fuel delivery rather than the engine itself.

A set that idles happily and then dies when the load comes on is usually being starved. The usual causes are a restricted fuel filter, a weak lift pump, an air leak on the suction side of the system, or a governor that cannot hold revs as demand rises. Occasionally it is an overload protection device doing its job correctly because the set is being asked for more than it can give. It is a diagnosis rather than a guess, which is why we would rather see it than price it down the phone. The same fault-finding discipline runs through all our plant and equipment work.

Do you come out to the generator, or does it have to come to you?

Both, and which one depends on size and whether the set is bolted down.

Portable and small petrol sets are simplest brought to the workshop on Boundary Road in St Helens — no call-out, all the tooling to hand, and bench space if something needs stripping properly. Standby and larger diesel sets are worked on where they stand, because moving them is more trouble than the job. Vehicle-mounted generators are almost always done on site. Ring 01744 808586 or send the details over with the make and size and we will tell you which makes sense.

What areas do you cover for generator work?

St Helens and the wider North West.

That takes in Merseyside, Warrington, Runcorn and Widnes, Wigan, Newton-le-Willows and Haydock, out towards Liverpool and Manchester, and into Cheshire and Lancashire. Runcorn and Manchester are the two we get asked about most, usually backup sets on industrial units that have not been touched since they were installed. If you are further out than that, ring and ask rather than assume — it depends on the week and on what the job actually needs. The same van covers plant work in Warrington and across Merseyside.

Do you work on petrol and portable generators?

Yes — petrol and portable sets are a good share of what comes through the workshop.

They are usually quicker and cheaper to put right than people expect. After a spell standing, the common jobs are cleaning out a carburettor that has gummed up, flushing stale fuel, plugs and oil, and sorting recoil or electric start problems. Because they are easy to move, these are best brought in to Boundary Road rather than paying for someone to come to them. Bring it as it is; you do not need to drain anything first. It is the same workshop that handles the rest of our garage services.

Do you service Kohler, Pramac or Honda generators?

Yes. We are not tied to one manufacturer, so make is rarely the deciding factor.

The engines in most small and mid-size sets are conventional diesel or petrol units, and servicing them is ordinary engine work — oils, filters, fuel system, belts, charge circuit. What does matter is parts availability on less common makes, so tell us the make and model when you ring and we will say up front if something is likely to be slow to get hold of rather than finding out halfway through. More about the workshop and the people in it is on our about us page. Call 01744 808586.

How much does a generator service cost?

It depends on the size of the set and what it takes, so we price it before we start rather than quote a headline figure.

What moves the number is the engine size and oil capacity, how many filters it takes, whether it is petrol or diesel, and whether we are coming to you or you are bringing it in. A small portable is a very different job to a standby set with a large sump and multiple fuel filters. Tell us the make and size and you will get a real figure, not a “from” price. You can also spread bigger bills — see Payment Assist.

Can you service a generator that has not run for years?

Yes, and it is worth doing before you need it rather than on the day.

A set that has stood for years normally wants the fuel draining and replacing, every filter changing, a new starting battery more often than not, and the carburettor cleaning if it is petrol. We would also check the oil for water and look at the mountings and exhaust for corrosion. Most of the time the engine itself is fine and it is everything around it that has suffered from standing still. It is a far better position to find that out in advance — the same logic we apply to plant across Merseyside.

Is it worth repairing an old generator or replacing it?

Usually repairing, but not always, and you will get a straight answer either way.

On most sets the engine outlasts everything else, so a generator that will not start is often a few hundred pounds of fuel system and battery work rather than a write-off. Where it stops being worth it is heavy internal engine damage on a cheap small unit, or a set where parts are no longer available. If that is where yours is, we will say so rather than take the work and hand you a bill that gets you nowhere. If it is worth saving, tell us about it and we will price the repair properly.

Do you supply and install new generators?

No. We service, maintain and repair generators, but we do not sell or install them, and we do not carry out load bank testing.

If what you need is a new set specified and fitted, you want a generator supplier rather than us, and we would rather point you that way than take a booking we are not the right people for. What we are good at is keeping a set you already own working — scheduled servicing, fault finding and repair, on site or in the workshop. Everything else we do is on our garage services page.

What does generator maintenance involve?

The same work as a service, done on a schedule rather than after a failure.

Generator maintenance covers oil and filters, the fuel system and water trap, air filter, belts and coolant, and the starting battery and charge circuit — then a proper run-up under load rather than a ten-second start. On a standby set it also means checking the fuel has not aged past the point of being useful. We will work to a schedule you already have or set a sensible interval based on the size of the set and what it protects. See plant and equipment repairs for the rest of the yard.

Do you do commercial generator repairs?

Yes — standby sets on industrial units and business premises are a good part of the work.

Commercial generator repairs usually come in one of two ways: a set that failed when the power went, or one found dead during a test run. Either way it is the same diagnosis — fuel, filters, battery and charge circuit first, then delivery under load. We work on site for anything bolted down. If the generator sits alongside vehicles or other equipment, it can be handled with our commercial and fleet work and PAT testing on the same visit.
