Payment Assist · St Helens
A repair bill rarely arrives in a convenient month
That is the whole reason this exists. The car does not care what else is due that week, and the choice between paying for a repair now or driving something that is not right is not much of a choice at all.
Payment Assist lets you spread a garage bill over three, four or six months at nought per cent interest. There is a small arrangement fee and then equal monthly payments; you are not paying interest on top. It is FCA regulated, which means it is a proper regulated agreement rather than an informal arrangement with us.
The order matters and we do it the same way every time: the work is diagnosed and priced first, you agree that price, and only then do we work out what it looks like spread. Nobody is ever quoted a monthly figure before they know the total, because that is how people end up agreeing to work they did not understand.
It applies to ordinary garage work — repairs, servicing, clutches, tyres and MOT work. If you want to know whether your job qualifies, ask before you book rather than after.

Payment Assist · The credit question
Does applying affect your credit file?
On bills up to a thousand pounds Payment Assist runs a soft search, which does not leave a footprint that other lenders can see. You can find out whether you would be accepted without it marking your file, which is the part most people actually want to know before they ask.
Above that threshold a full credit check applies, and that does leave a record in the normal way. We will tell you which applies to your bill before anything is submitted, not after.
What it is not is a no-credit-check arrangement, and we will not describe it as one. It is a regulated credit agreement with a soft search at the lower end. If your circumstances mean credit is difficult, say so when we talk and we will be straight with you about the likely answer rather than putting you through an application for the sake of it.
Payment Assist · How it works
Four steps, in this order
The order is the point. Price first, repayment second.
-
The work is priced first
Diagnosed, explained and priced. You agree the total before anyone mentions monthly figures, because the repayment should come from the price rather than the price from the repayment.
-
You choose three, four or six months
All at nought per cent interest, with a small arrangement fee. Longer terms mean smaller payments; shorter means fewer of them. Neither costs you interest.
-
The application takes minutes
Done here while you are with us, or over the phone. Up to a thousand pounds it is a soft search, so finding out where you stand does not mark your file.
-
First payment, then the car
A deposit is taken on the day and the balance is collected monthly by direct debit. The car goes when the work is finished, not when the last payment clears.
Payment Assist · What it covers
Payment Assist covers ordinary garage work
If we do the job here, it can usually be spread.
Repairs
Clutches, brakes, cambelts, suspension and the rest of the jobs that arrive without warning. See car repairs.
Servicing and MOT work
Including the repairs that come out of a failed test, so a fail does not have to become a month of waiting. See MOT testing.
Tyres
A set of four is the classic bill nobody planned for. Spreading it is often the difference between four good tyres now and two cheap ones. See tyres.
Diagnostics and electrical
Fault-finding and the repair that follows, so you are not choosing between knowing what is wrong and fixing it. See diagnostics.
Vans and commercial vehicles
Where downtime costs you money, spreading the bill keeps the van working while the payments run. See fleet work.
Larger jobs
Gearboxes, engine work and welding — the bills big enough that spreading them genuinely changes whether the work gets done at all.
Payment Assist · What it actually costs
Nought per cent interest, and a small arrangement fee
That is the whole of it. There is no interest added to the repair price.
You pay a deposit on the day, then the balance in equal monthly instalments by direct debit over three, four or six months. The repair price does not change because you are spreading it, which is the part people expect to be different and are relieved that it is not.
The arrangement fee is a fixed amount rather than a percentage, so it matters proportionally less on a larger bill. We will tell you the exact figure and the exact monthly payment before you agree to anything.
Missing payments has consequences, as with any regulated credit agreement, so it is worth being honest with yourself about the monthly figure rather than stretching to the shortest term. Four months at a comfortable payment beats three at one that is not.
Ring 01744 808586 and we will price the job first, then tell you what spreading it looks like.

Not sure if you would be accepted?

Payment Assist · Where we are
A garage that does Payment Assist, on Boundary Road
St Helens, Rainhill, Prescot, Haydock, Newton-le-Willows, Billinge and Eccleston, with plenty of cars coming from Warrington and Widnes. A few minutes off the A58 and the Linkway.
Payment Assist · Did you know
Deferring tyres costs more than spreading them
Tread is legal down to 1.6mm, but wet braking distances start lengthening noticeably below about 3mm. The gap between those two numbers is where most people are driving when they decide tyres can wait another month.
It is also the decision that most often leads to two cheap tyres instead of four good ones, which costs more over the life of the car and performs worse in the meantime. Spreading the cost over four months usually makes the better set affordable now rather than later, and that is the actual point of the arrangement.

Payment Assist · FAQs
Everything people ask about spreading a repair bill
Twenty questions, answered properly rather than in one line.
On bills up to a thousand pounds it is a soft search, which means you can find out whether you would be accepted without leaving a footprint other lenders can see. Above that figure a full credit check applies.
We will tell you which one applies to your bill before anything is submitted rather than afterwards. What it is not is a no-credit-check arrangement, and we will not describe it as one — it is a properly regulated credit agreement that happens to use a soft search at the lower end. If credit is difficult for you at the moment, say so and we will give you an honest view rather than putting you through an application for the sake of it. See the work it covers.
Nought per cent interest. There is a small fixed arrangement fee and then equal monthly payments, and the repair price itself does not change because you are spreading it.
Because the fee is a fixed amount rather than a percentage, it matters proportionally less on a larger bill. You will be told the exact fee and the exact monthly figure before agreeing to anything. That is the part worth checking on any finance offer: whether the price of the work has quietly gone up to pay for the credit. Here it has not. Ring 01744 808586 or send your reg and we will price the job first.
Three, four or six months, all at nought per cent. Longer terms mean smaller monthly payments rather than a higher total, because there is no interest being added either way.
The honest advice is to pick the term you are comfortable with rather than the shortest one you think you can manage. Four months at a payment that fits is better than three at one that does not, because a missed payment on a regulated agreement has consequences. We will show you all three figures side by side and let you choose — see the repairs it covers.
Ordinary garage work — repairs, servicing, MOT work and the repairs that come out of a failed test, tyres, diagnostics and larger jobs like clutches and gearboxes.
If we are doing the job here, it can usually be spread. The most common uses are the bills nobody planned for: a set of four tyres, a clutch, or an MOT failure that turned into real work. If you are not sure whether your job qualifies, ask before you book rather than after the car is in pieces. See tyres or MOT testing.
No — and that order matters. The work is diagnosed and priced first, you agree the total, and only then is the monthly figure worked out from it.
Quoting a monthly payment before the total is how people end up agreeing to work they never properly understood. You should always know the full price of the job and be happy with it before finance is mentioned at all. If anyone leads with a monthly figure, ask what the total is. That applies to us as much as to anyone else. More about how we work is on our about us page.

Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons people ask. An MOT failure is the definition of a bill arriving in an inconvenient month, and the car is not legal to drive until the work is done.
The test fee and the repair are separate, so you see exactly what the repair costs on its own. A fail with us gets a free retest because we are doing the work, which takes one cost out of the equation entirely. See how the retest works, or ring 01744 808586 if you have failed elsewhere and want the repair pricing.
Yes. Because there is no interest, settling early simply means you stop making the remaining payments rather than saving on interest you would otherwise have paid.
It is worth knowing that there is nothing to gain financially from rushing, which is the opposite of how most credit works. If a term of six months makes the payments comfortable, there is no penalty for taking the six months. Speak to Payment Assist directly about settling, since the agreement is with them rather than with us, and we will point you at the right contact — just ask.
There is a practical minimum, because the arrangement fee makes it poor value on a very small bill, and the soft search threshold sits at a thousand pounds with a full check above that.
For small jobs it is usually not worth the paperwork and we will say so. Where it earns its keep is on the bills big enough to hurt: a clutch, a set of tyres, a gearbox or a major service with work attached. Tell us what the job is likely to be and we will tell you honestly whether spreading it makes sense. See clutch repair for a typical example.
With Payment Assist, not with us. They are FCA regulated and the monthly payments are collected by them by direct debit. We are the garage doing the work.
That distinction matters if you ever need to change a payment date or discuss the agreement, because those conversations are with them. What we handle is the work on the car and making sure the price you agreed is the price that goes onto the agreement. If anything about the paperwork is unclear, ask us before you sign rather than after — we would far rather explain it twice — just ask.
Yes, and a set of four is one of the most common things people spread. It is often the difference between fitting four good tyres now and putting two cheap ones on to get by.
Tyres are the bill people most often postpone, and it is the worst one to postpone because grip falls away long before the legal limit. Tread is legal down to 1.6mm but wet braking deteriorates noticeably below 3mm. Spreading the cost over four months usually makes the better tyre affordable now rather than in six months. See tyres in St Helens.
It is worth asking, because up to a thousand pounds the soft search means finding out costs you nothing and leaves no mark. A previous refusal elsewhere does not automatically mean a refusal here.
Different lenders weigh things differently, and the amounts involved in a garage bill are far smaller than most credit applications. What we will not do is pretend the answer is certain, or describe this as no-credit-check finance when it is not. If it comes back as a no, we will talk about what else is possible — including doing the essential safety work now and the rest later. Have a word with us.
Yes, and it is often the sensible thing to do whether or not you are spreading the cost. Some work is safety-critical and some can genuinely wait a few months.
We will tell you which is which rather than presenting one lump and leaving you to guess. Brakes, tyres and anything structural are not things to defer; a worn bush that is merely an advisory usually is. Doing it in two stages sometimes means neither stage needs financing at all, which is a better outcome for you even though it is less work for us. See how we price repairs.
No. How you pay has no bearing on the work itself — parts we fit carry twelve months regardless of whether the bill was settled in one go or spread over six months.
The workmanship is the same, the parts are the same and the guarantee is the same. The only difference is the payment arrangement sitting alongside it. If anything goes wrong with a repair during the warranty period, bring it back and it gets dealt with in exactly the same way. That is worth saying plainly because people do sometimes assume finance changes their standing — it does not. See what we cover.
Each agreement covers a job rather than a vehicle, so in principle yes, though separate jobs would normally mean separate agreements.
For households with two cars due at similar times, it is worth asking before booking both in so we can lay out the options rather than surprising you. For businesses running several vehicles the answer is usually different and depends on the amounts involved — see commercial and fleet work and tell us what you run. Either way, ask first and we will explain what is realistic.
It is a regulated credit agreement, so a missed payment has the consequences any regulated agreement does — charges may apply and it can affect your credit file.
That is exactly why we suggest choosing the term you are genuinely comfortable with rather than the shortest one you think you can stretch to. Since there is no interest, a longer term costs you nothing extra. If something changes and you know a payment is going to be a problem, contact Payment Assist before the date rather than after; that is always a better conversation. We will point you at the right contact — ask us.
No. The price of the repair is the price of the repair. Spreading it does not change what the work costs, and we will not quote a different figure depending on how you intend to pay.
It is a fair question to ask any garage, because it is not true everywhere. The only additional cost is the fixed arrangement fee, which is disclosed before you agree. If you ever find the total moving once finance comes up, that is the moment to ask why. See servicing prices for how we set out costs generally.
It is better to have the car looked at first, because the application is based on an actual price and we cannot give you a real figure until we know what the job is.
What you can do beforehand is ring and describe the problem, and we will give you a realistic range so you know roughly what you are dealing with. Then the diagnosis confirms it and the application follows. Applying on a guess risks the agreement being for the wrong amount, which helps nobody. Ring 01744 808586 or message us and describe what the car is doing.
It applies to the invoice we raise for work we carry out. Where we have supplied and fitted the parts, that is straightforward.
If you supply your own parts the labour can still be invoiced, but the total is usually smaller and the arrangement fee makes spreading it less worthwhile. We will be honest about that rather than signing you up to something that does not help. One thing worth knowing: parts you supply are between you and the seller for warranty, whereas parts we supply carry twelve months. See what we cover.
Usually within minutes. The application is done here while you are with us, or over the phone, and you normally have an answer before you have finished your tea.
That matters when a car has failed its MOT or is off the road, because the decision is rarely one you can leave until next week. If it is approved you sign, pay the deposit and we get on with the work. If it is not, we will tell you straight away and talk about what else can be done rather than leaving you without a plan. Get in touch and we will start with the price.
Some do and some do not, and the thing worth comparing is not whether finance is offered but whether the work is priced before the monthly figure is mentioned.
A garage that leads with a monthly payment is asking you to agree to a total you have not seen. We price the job, explain what is needed and what can wait, and only then work out what spreading it looks like. That order is the point. If you are getting quotes elsewhere, ask each of them for the total as well as the monthly figure — more about our approach on our about us page.
