One garage, from the oil change to the gearbox

Most people meet us through one job — an MOT, a service, a noise that turned out to be a wheel bearing. What keeps them coming back is not having to go anywhere else afterwards. The test, the diagnosis and the repair all happen on the same site, with the same technicians.

The workshop covers servicing to manufacturer schedules, MOT testing for cars, small vans and motorcycles, diagnostics that talk to the car's modules rather than reading a light off the dashboard, and the repairs that come out of all three: brakes, clutches, exhausts, suspension, timing belts and DPF cleaning.

Newer cars are not a problem either. We have the equipment and the training for hybrid and EV work, auto-electrical faults and the wet belt engines that a lot of garages would rather not take on. If we cannot do something, we say so on the phone rather than after the car is in bits.

Nothing gets done without your say-so. The car goes on the ramp, somebody looks at it properly, and you get a call with what we have found and what it will cost. If a job can safely wait, we tell you which one and why.

What we do

The garage services in St Helens we are asked for most

Six things account for most of what is on the ramps on any given day. Every one of them is done here, on site, by the people who will ring you about it.

TestingClass 4 MOT test being carried out at Fastlane Autocare in St Helens

MOT testing

Class 4 for cars and small vans, plus Class 1 and 2 for motorcycles — there are not many bike testers round here. Fail with us and the retest is free, because the repair happens on our ramp.

Not sure what it needs?

Describe the noise. We will tell you what it usually is.

You do not have to work it out before you ring. Most people describe a sound, a smell or a light on the dashboard, and that is normally enough for us to say what we are looking at and how long it takes.

How a job runs

What happens once you have booked

No surprises is most of the job. This is the order it goes in, whether you are in for an oil change or a clutch.

1You drop the car and tell us the symptoms. First thing is the busiest slot, and it is the one that gives us the whole day to get parts if the car needs them.
2It goes on the ramp and gets looked at properly. On a service that means the full schedule; on a fault it means diagnosis before anyone talks about parts.
3You get a phone call before any work starts. What we found, what it costs, how long it takes, and what can safely wait until next time.
4The work is done and the old parts are kept. Nobody has to take our word for a worn disc. If a repair is a bigger bill than expected, Payment Assist spreads it.

Who we look after

St Helens, and the towns either side of it

Most of the work comes from St Helens itself, but a fair share drives in from the towns around it — usually because a test-only centre could not do the repair, or a main dealer quoted a number they did not fancy.

Coming any distance? Ring 01744 808586 with the registration first and we will price it and check the next slot before you set off.

Warning lights and faults

When the dashboard tells you something is wrong

A light on the dashboard is the start of a conversation, not a diagnosis. The same amber symbol can mean a fifteen-minute fix or a day’s work, and the only way to know is to read the car.

Engine management, ABS, airbag, glow plug and DPF lights all get treated the same way here: plug in, read the live data as well as the stored code, then work out which part of the story is the cause and which is the consequence. A sensor that reads out of range is often reporting a real problem somewhere else, and swapping the sensor just moves the light along.

That is why we quote diagnosis and repair separately. You are paying for the time to find it, then agreeing the fix once it is known. More on vehicle diagnostics, what the warning lights mean, and auto-electrical work when the fault is in the wiring rather than a component.

Book it in, or just ask us first

If you know what you need, book online and pick your slot. If you are not sure, ring and describe it — that is a two minute call and it usually saves a wasted trip.

Rather type than talk?

Send your registration and what the car is doing. We will come back with what it is likely to be, what it costs and when we can take it — usually within the hour while we are open.

Straight answers, before you book

What drivers ask us most

How much is a car service?

It depends on which service the car is due and what the engine takes, which is why an honest garage asks for the registration before quoting. Oil grade and quantity vary hugely between engines, and the filters on some cars cost several times what they do on others.

The bigger difference is interim against full against major, because that changes how many items are on the checklist and how long the car is on the ramp.

Give us the registration on 01744 808586 and you will get a figure for your car rather than a headline price for somebody else's. More on car servicing in St Helens.

What is an interim service?

An interim service is the half-way one — oil, oil filter and a safety inspection, usually every six months or 6,000 miles. It exists for cars doing high mileage or a lot of short, cold runs, where waiting a full year between oil changes is asking a lot of the engine.

It is not a replacement for the full service. Think of it as keeping the oil fresh and getting eyes on the brakes, tyres and fluids between the bigger visits.

If you are unsure which one your car is due, the servicing page sets out what each covers.

Does an interim service include an oil change?

Yes — oil and the oil filter are the core of an interim service. Everything else on it is inspection rather than replacement: brakes, tyres, lights, wipers, and the fluid levels topped where needed.

What it does not include is the wider replacement list from a full service, such as the air filter, pollen filter and fuel filter, or the more detailed checks on suspension and drivetrain.

Fresh oil is the single thing that matters most between services, which is why the interim is built around it.

How often should engine oil be changed?

Most modern cars want it once a year or every 10,000 to 12,000 miles, whichever comes first — but check the handbook, because some engines are far shorter. Long-life schedules on some makes stretch to 20,000 miles and rely on the car’s own oil monitor.

Short local journeys are harder on oil than motorway miles. The engine never gets properly hot, moisture and fuel do not burn off, and the oil degrades faster than the mileage suggests.

If the car mostly does school runs and trips into town, service it by time rather than distance. Ring 01744 808586 with the registration and we will tell you what yours is due.

How much does it cost to clean a DPF?

It depends entirely on whether the filter can be cleaned in place or has to come off the car. A forced regeneration through the diagnostic equipment is a short job. An on-car chemical clean is longer. Removing the filter for an off-car clean is longer again, because access on some engines is genuinely awkward.

What decides it is how blocked the filter is and, more importantly, why. A DPF that keeps blocking is usually reporting another fault — a leaking injector, a failed sensor, or a car that never gets a long enough run.

We diagnose the cause first, because cleaning a filter without fixing the reason just buys a few months. See DPF cleaning.

How often do brake pads need replacing?

Typically somewhere between 25,000 and 50,000 miles, but driving style and where you drive matter more than the number. Stop-start town driving wears pads several times faster than steady motorway miles.

The honest answer is that pads are measured, not predicted. We check thickness at every service and tell you how much is left, so you get warning rather than a surprise.

Squealing, a longer pedal or a judder through the steering are all worth booking in for. Brake repairs are done here, or ring 01744 808586.

How long does an MOT certificate last?

Twelve months from the date of the test, expiring at midnight on the anniversary. You can test up to a month minus a day early and keep the same renewal date, so booking ahead costs you nothing.

Leave it until after expiry and those days are gone for good, and the car cannot legally be driven except to a pre-booked test or to repairs you have arranged.

Not sure of your date? Ring 01744 808586 with the registration and we will check it, or book the MOT online.

How often should car air conditioning be serviced?

Every two years or so, whether or not anything has gone wrong. Air conditioning systems lose a small amount of gas every year by design, so performance drops off gradually enough that most people do not notice until a hot week arrives.

Running it weakly all summer also works the compressor harder than it should, and a compressor is a far bigger job than a regas.

Blowing but not cold usually means a regas. Stopped working altogether is a leak or a component, and we will tell you which before doing anything. See air conditioning regas.

Do you do courtesy cars, and how long is the wait?

Ask when you book and we will talk it through honestly rather than promise something on a web page. It depends on the day and how busy the workshop is, and we would rather agree it with you in advance than let you down on the morning.

For most jobs it does not come up. An MOT takes about an hour, and plenty of people drop the car first thing and collect after work, which needs nothing arranging at all.

If you genuinely cannot be without a car, say so on the call — 01744 808586 — and we will work around it.

What does a garage charge per hour?

Labour is charged by the job here, not by the hour, so you agree a figure before work starts rather than watching a clock. Most common jobs have a known time attached to them, and that is what the quote is built from.

Where a fault genuinely needs investigation — an intermittent electrical problem, say — we agree the diagnosis time with you first, then the repair separately once it is known.

Either way you are told the number before anything is touched. That is the whole point of the phone call.

What does a full service include?

Oil and filter, air filter, pollen filter, plus a long inspection list covering brakes, tyres, suspension, steering, exhaust, lights, wipers, battery and all the fluid levels. Fuel filters and spark plugs come in on the schedules that call for them.

The inspection half is the part people undervalue. It is where a worn pad, a perished bush or a weeping hose gets caught while it is still cheap.

It is stamped and recorded, which is what protects the warranty and the resale value. Car servicing in St Helens.

Is a mobile mechanic cheaper than a garage?

For simple jobs at your address it can work out very similar — the difference is what happens when the job turns out to be bigger than expected. A driveway has no ramp, no press and no diagnostic rig, so some work simply cannot be finished there.

We do call-outs as well as workshop work, so the sensible approach is to describe the fault and let us say which makes sense. A battery or a service at your address is straightforward; a clutch or a cambelt belongs on a ramp.

Tell us what the car is doing on 01744 808586 and we will be straight with you about which way is better.
