Ford Service and Repair St Helens: EcoBoost, TDCi and EcoBlue
Fastlane Autocare is an independent Ford garage on Boundary Road that services and repairs every Ford from the Fiesta to the Transit to the manufacturer schedule, reads them on manufacturer-level diagnostic software, and deals with the jobs the badge is known for: the EcoBoost wet belt, the TDCi and EcoBlue diesels, the Powershift gearbox and the DPF, without main-dealer prices. This page sets out what is covered, what goes wrong on each engine, and how a visit runs.

What does an independent Ford specialist do that a general garage does not?
An independent Ford specialist services and repairs Fords to the manufacturer schedule, with parts and oil to Ford specification and the work recorded, so the warranty stays intact, and knows the engines well enough to catch the faults Ford is known for before they become engines: the EcoBoost wet belt, coolant loss on the 1.0 and 1.5, the TDCi injectors and turbo, and the Powershift gearbox.
- Servicing to the Ford schedule, with the exact oil the EcoBoost wet belt is rated for, the service indicator reset and the record kept.
- Manufacturer-level diagnostics and coding, so a warning light is traced to the module that logged it rather than guessed from a generic reader.
- EcoBoost and 1.5 TDCi wet belt replacement at the right interval, with the sump off and the oil pick-up cleaned, before it sheds into the engine.
- Coolant loss investigation on the 1.0 and 1.5 EcoBoost, found and fixed before it overheats the head.
- DPF, EGR and AdBlue faults on TDCi and EcoBlue diesels, repaired and regenerated, never deleted.
- Clutches, Powershift and manual gearboxes, brakes, suspension, tyres and alignment, plus the MOT on our own lane.
- Fiesta, Focus, Puma, Kuga, EcoSport, B-Max, C-Max, S-Max, Mondeo, Ranger, Transit, Transit Custom, Connect and Courier, petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric.
What you get that a main dealer does not is the conversation: what the reading means, what it costs and what can wait, before anything is done. Send the registration through the reg check below or ring 01744 808586; we look up the engine and its known points before you arrive. For the fault-finding side see Ford diagnostics, and for the engine that brings most Fords in, Ford Focus wet belt replacement.
What is covered
Ford service and repair at Boundary Road, job by job
Everything below is done here, on the ramp, by technicians who see Fords every day. Nothing is sent to a dealer.
- Interim, full and major servicingTo the Ford schedule for the model and year, with the oil specification the EcoBoost demands. See Ford servicing, Fiesta servicing and Kuga servicing.
- Manufacturer-level diagnosticsEvery module read, live data watched, and the fault named before a part is quoted. See Ford diagnostics.
- EcoBoost and TDCi wet belt replacementBelt, tensioner, sump off, oil pick-up cleaned, correct oil and filter. See Focus wet belt and Transit Connect wet belt.
- Engine repair and turbosCoolant loss, head work, 1.6 TDCi injectors and turbo oil feed, tested before parts. See Ford engine repair and Ford turbo replacement.
- DPF cleaning and AdBlue faultsForced regeneration, off-car cleaning, NOx sensors, with the cause found first. See Ford DPF cleaning.
- Clutch and Powershift gearboxClutch and flywheel on the manuals; clutch packs, seals and software on the Powershift. See Ford clutch repair.
- Suspension and steeringSprings, bushes, links and dampers on cars that wear them faster than most. See Ford suspension repair.
- Transit and van workCustom, Connect, Courier and the full-size Transit, kept on the road. See Ford Transit van repair.
- Glow plugs, brakes, tyres and alignmentMeasured and reported, replaced when you say so. See Ford glow plug replacement.
- MOT testingOn our own lane, with the repairs done in the same building. See MOT St Helens.
The clutch kit on the tool chest in the photo is going into a Fiesta on the ramp, which is a typical afternoon here. The Fiesta and Focus are the cars we see most of any make, and the jobs repeat: wet belts, clutches, coolant loss and the odd Powershift.
If yours is under manufacturer warranty, nothing changes here: the schedule, the parts and the record are the same, and the warranty stays intact. The section further down covers why.

Engine by engine
What goes wrong on each Ford engine, and what we do about it
Every Ford engine has its known points. These are the ones that bring cars to Boundary Road most often, with the fix in plain terms.
| Engine and models | What you notice | What it usually is | What we do |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0 EcoBoost petrol: Fiesta, Focus, Puma, EcoSport, B-Max, C-Max | Oil pressure warning, rattle, oil level dropping | Wet belt degrading and shedding into the sump; wrong oil speeds it up | Belt and tensioner, sump off, pick-up cleaned, correct oil. See Focus wet belt |
| 1.0 and 1.5 EcoBoost | Coolant level dropping, overheating, sweet smell | Degas pipe, coolant pipe or, on some engines, coolant getting into the cylinders | Pressure tested and traced before a head is blamed. See Ford engine repair |
| 1.5 TDCi diesel: Fiesta, Focus, Transit Connect, Courier, 2015 on | Oil pressure warning, rattle | Wet belt, as on the EcoBoost | Belt, sump off, clean and correct oil. See Transit Connect wet belt |
| 1.6 TDCi diesel: Fiesta, Focus, C-Max, Connect, 2004 to 2015 | Loss of power, smoke, whistle, rough running | Blocked turbo oil feed starving the turbo; injectors on higher mileage | Feed pipe and strainer before a turbo. See 1.6 TDCi engine repair |
| 2.0 TDCi and EcoBlue diesel: Focus, Kuga, Mondeo, S-Max, Transit, Ranger | DPF light, AdBlue message, limp mode | Filter loaded on short journeys; NOx sensor or AdBlue injector on the EcoBlue | Regeneration or off-car clean, sensor replaced. See Ford DPF cleaning |
| Powershift automatic: Fiesta, Focus, B-Max, C-Max, 2010 to 2018 | Judder from a standstill, hesitation, gearbox fault | Dry clutch packs worn, input shaft seals leaking, module software | Clutch packs and seals, software updated. See gearbox repairs |
| Focus, Kuga, C-Max suspension | Knock over bumps, pulling, uneven tyre wear | Rear springs, drop links and front bushes | Replaced in pairs, aligned afterwards. See Ford suspension repair |
| Diesels in winter | Long cranking, smoke, glow plug light | Failed glow plugs | Tested individually, replaced without snapping. See glow plug replacement |
| Transit, Transit Custom vans | Judder, clutch slip, DPF light | Clutch and dual-mass flywheel; DPF on urban work | Clutch and flywheel together; filter cleaned. See Transit van repair |
| Puma and Kuga hybrids, Mustang Mach-E | Hybrid or battery warning, brake noise | Battery state of health; brakes corroding from light use | Read on the tool, brakes serviced. See hybrid and EV repair |
Two of those are MOT matters as well as repairs: an engine management lamp is a major failure and a DPF that has been removed fails on sight. The Ford diagnostics page decodes what the dash is showing, and the MOT page covers the test itself.
The big one
What is the EcoBoost wet belt problem, and when should it be replaced?
The EcoBoost wet belt problem is the timing belt on the 1.0 three-cylinder petrol degrading inside the engine, where it runs in oil, and shedding fragments that block the oil pick-up and starve the engine, so the first sign is often a low oil pressure warning rather than a noise, and Ford has shortened the replacement interval from the figure it first published.
Two things shorten its life: the wrong engine oil at a service, because the belt is only rated for the specification Ford lists, and the car being run low on oil. Both are common on cars serviced cheaply elsewhere. The repair is the belt and tensioner with the sump off and the oil pick-up cleaned, refilled with the correct oil, which is why it costs more than a dry belt.
The 1.5 TDCi diesel in the Fiesta, Focus, Transit Connect and Courier uses the same arrangement and fails the same way. Send the registration and the mileage through the reg check and we tell you the interval for your engine and whether the belt has been done. See Ford Focus wet belt replacement, how a wet belt fails on the EcoBoost and does my car have a wet belt. Ring 01744 808586 the first time the oil pressure light flickers.

How a visit runs
What happens when your Ford comes to Boundary Road
-
The car is looked up before it arrives
Model, engine, mileage and the known points for that combination, so an EcoBoost at 60,000 miles or a Powershift with a judder is on the sheet before the bonnet is up.
-
Read on manufacturer-level software
Every module, not just the engine. Stored and pending codes, live data and the freeze-frame of when the fault happened.
-
Inspected on the ramp
Oil condition and level, coolant level and pressure, belt and turbo checks, brakes and suspension measured, tyres and alignment noted.
-
You get a phone call with the answer and a price
What it is, what it costs, and what can wait. Nothing is fitted on a guess and nothing extra is done without you saying yes.
-
Repaired with parts to Ford specification
Genuine or OE-quality parts and the exact oil the engine is rated for, with software updates where the fix needs one.
-
Reset, recorded and road tested
Service indicator reset, the work written into the record, and the car driven before it goes back.
Approved, authorised, independent
Are you a Ford approved garage, and does it matter for my warranty?
Fastlane is an independent Ford garage rather than a Ford-authorised repairer, and for your warranty that does not matter: under UK Block Exemption rules Ford cannot tie the warranty to its dealer network, so provided the work follows the Ford schedule, uses parts and oil to Ford specification and is properly recorded, the manufacturer warranty stays exactly as it was.
Those three conditions are how the job is done here anyway. The schedule is checked for the model and year, the oil carries the specification the engine is rated for, which on an EcoBoost is the difference between a wet belt that lasts and one that does not, and the service is recorded with the indicator reset. Keep the invoices; they list the oil and the parts.
What changes is the bill and the conversation. Dealer labour rates are what they are, and a dealer will sell you a turbo for a 1.6 TDCi whose real problem was a blocked feed pipe. Here the reading is explained, the cause is proven before the part is quoted, and the figure sits below the franchise. A bigger job can go on Payment Assist, and it can be paired with the MOT so the car comes in once. See is a full service history worth it for what the record does at resale.

Ford service and repair St Helens — paying over time
Ford repairs never arrive in a convenient month
Nobody plans for the wet belt or the judder pulling away. Whatever the diagnosis turns into can be spread across four months at nought per cent through pay monthly car repairs, decided on a soft search that does not mark your credit file.
The gearbox question
Why does my Ford Powershift judder, and can it be repaired?
A Ford Powershift judders from a standstill because it is a dual-clutch automatic with dry clutch packs that wear and glaze, often helped along by input shaft seals that leak gearbox oil onto them, and it can be repaired with new clutch packs and seals and the control module software brought up to date, which is a fraction of the price of the replacement gearbox some garages quote.
The judder usually starts as a shudder pulling away, then hesitation between first and second, then a gearbox fault message. The read on the tool shows the clutch adaptation values and whether the module has the latest software, and the seals are checked for leaks before the clutch is blamed alone.
Fitted to the Fiesta, Focus, B-Max and C-Max between 2010 and 2018, the Powershift is the one Ford job where a second opinion saves the most money. See gearbox repairs St Helens for the gearbox side, Ford clutch repair for the manual equivalent, and pay monthly car repairs for spreading it. Ring 01744 808586 with the registration and the symptom.
Servicing
What does a Ford service need that other cars do not?
A Ford service needs the exact oil specification the engine is rated for, because on the EcoBoost and 1.5 TDCi the wet belt only survives in the oil it was designed for and on the diesels the particulate filter clogs on anything else, and it needs the coolant level and condition checked properly on the 1.0 and 1.5 EcoBoost, because coolant loss on those engines is the warning before a bigger bill.
Beyond that it is a proper service done properly: brakes measured, springs and bushes checked on the cars that wear them, the wet belt listened to and the oil filler inspected for debris, the DPF load read on the diesels, and the AdBlue system checked for stored faults on the EcoBlue. Intervals are 12 months or the mileage Ford specifies, whichever comes first, and the years figure applies to a car that has barely moved.
The record matters at resale on a Ford more than most, because a buyer of a used EcoBoost wants to see the wet belt done and the right oil in the book. See Ford servicing for the schedule, Fiesta servicing and Puma servicing for the models, and what is included in a car service for how interim, full and major compare.
The numbers
Six numbers behind a Ford
The figures that decide what we look at first on your car.
Where the cars on our ramps come from
Ford service and repair St Helens, and the towns owners drive in from
Boundary Road is a couple of minutes off the A58 and the Linkway, and minutes from junction 23 of the M6. Fords come in from every direction, because there are more of them than anything else on the road.
Cars and vans also come over from Liverpool, Wigan, Warrington and across Cheshire, usually after a dealer quote for a wet belt or a Powershift. Ford servicing covers the routine work and Ford diagnostics the faults.
Worth knowing
Why the oil grade matters more on a Ford than on most cars
On an EcoBoost the timing belt lives inside the engine, bathed in oil. Ford rates the belt for one oil specification, and an oil outside it attacks the rubber, which is why belts on cars serviced with whatever was on the shelf shed years early. On the TDCi and EcoBlue diesels the particulate filter is clogged by the ash in ordinary oil, so a cheap service turns into a DPF bill a year later.
The specification is printed on the can and on our invoice. It is the one question worth asking any garage that services a Ford.
The cars we see
Fiesta, Focus, Puma, Kuga, Transit: the Fords on our ramps
The Fiesta and Focus are the cars we see most of any make, because there are more of them and because the EcoBoost brings them in; the Puma and Kuga follow for the same engine and for hybrid systems; and the Transit, Custom, Connect and Courier vans make up the rest of a typical week with clutches, DPFs and hard-worked suspension.
Each has its own pattern. The small cars are wet belts, coolant loss and the occasional Powershift. The Kuga and S-Max add the 2.0 diesel with its DPF and AdBlue, and the bigger brakes that wear faster on a heavy car. The older 1.6 TDCi cars are turbos and injectors, and the vans are clutches and flywheels.
The Transit is the van we see most, and the one where a day off the road costs the owner most, so the read and the repair are turned round as quickly as the job allows. Whatever the badge on yours, Ford Transit van repair and Ford diagnostics cover the detail, and the registration tells us the rest.

Been quoted by a Ford dealer and want a second figure?

Ford service and repair St Helens • straight answers
Questions Ford owners ask us most
Fastlane Autocare is an independent Ford specialist on Boundary Road in St Helens, a couple of minutes off the A58 and the Linkway, servicing and repairing every Ford from the Fiesta to the Transit on manufacturer-level diagnostic software at independent labour rates.
Cars and vans come in from across the borough, Widnes, Warrington, Wigan and Liverpool, most within twenty minutes of the workshop. Send the registration and we look the car up before you arrive. See Ford diagnostics and the contact page for directions. Ring 01744 808586.
Fastlane is an independent Ford garage rather than a Ford-authorised repairer, which means the same schedule, the same parts specification and the same record as a dealer, at independent labour rates and with the fault explained to you before anything is fitted; under Block Exemption rules that keeps your manufacturer warranty intact.
What an authorised repairer has that we do not is the franchise, and what we have that they do not is the price and the conversation. See Ford servicing and why the record matters.
An independent garage does not affect your Ford warranty: under UK Block Exemption rules Ford cannot tie the warranty to dealer servicing, so provided the schedule is followed, parts and oil meet the Ford specification and the work is recorded, the warranty stays intact.
That is how the job is done here, with the oil specification on the invoice, which on an EcoBoost is what protects the wet belt. Keep the invoices. See Ford servicing and is a full service history worth it.
The Ford EcoBoost wet belt problem is the timing belt on the 1.0 three-cylinder petrol, which runs inside the engine in oil, degrading and shedding fragments that block the oil pick-up and starve the engine, so the first sign is often a low oil pressure warning rather than a noise, and the wrong oil at a service or a low oil level speeds it up.
The fix is the belt and tensioner with the sump off and the pick-up cleaned, done at the interval rather than after the light. See Ford Focus wet belt replacement and how a wet belt fails on the EcoBoost. Ring 01744 808586 the first time the oil light flickers.
A Ford wet belt should be replaced at the interval Ford now specifies for the engine, which is shorter than the figure first published, and sooner on a car that has had the wrong oil, been run low on oil or shows any sign of belt debris in the oil filler, because a belt that has started to shed cannot be nursed to the next service.
The 1.5 TDCi diesel uses the same arrangement. Send the registration and the mileage and we tell you the interval for your engine and whether the belt has been done. See does my car have a wet belt and cambelt water pump replacement cost.
A Ford EcoBoost losing coolant usually has a failed degas pipe or coolant pipe on the 1.0, or on some 1.5 engines coolant finding its way into the cylinders, and the answer is a pressure test and a trace of where it is going before anything is replaced, because a slow loss ignored on these engines ends in an overheated head.
A sweet smell, a level that keeps dropping and a temperature gauge creeping up are the signs. See Ford engine repair and head gasket replacement cost for where it ends up. Ring 01744 808586 before it overheats.
A Ford Powershift judders because its dry dual-clutch packs wear and glaze, often with input shaft seals leaking oil onto them, and it can be fixed with new clutch packs and seals and the control module software updated, which is a fraction of the replacement gearbox some garages quote.
Fitted to the Fiesta, Focus, B-Max and C-Max from 2010 to 2018, it is the Ford job where a second opinion saves most. See gearbox repairs St Helens and Ford clutch repair, or ring 01744 808586.
A Ford 1.6 TDCi with a whistle and no power usually has a turbo being starved of oil by a blocked feed pipe and strainer, so the turbo is the victim rather than the cause, and the test is oil flow at the feed before any turbo is quoted, because a new turbo on a blocked feed fails again within months.
The proper job is the feed pipe and strainer, the sump off and the pick-up cleaned, and the turbo where it has already gone. See Ford 1.6 TDCi engine repair and Ford turbo replacement.
We clean Ford DPFs by forced regeneration on the tool where the filter can be saved and by off-car cleaning where it cannot, with the cause found first, and we will not delete or remove one at any price, because a car without its filter fails the MOT on sight and it is an offence to drive on the road.
Short journeys are the usual cause on a 2.0 TDCi or EcoBlue, with a sensor or EGR fault behind the repeat cases. See Ford DPF cleaning and DPF cleaning cost for the figures.
We fix Ford AdBlue faults on the EcoBlue diesels in the Transit, Kuga, Focus and Ranger by reading the system on the manufacturer-level tool and replacing the NOx sensor, AdBlue injector or pump that has failed, then clearing the countdown, because an AdBlue fault left alone ends with a vehicle that will not start once the counter reaches zero.
See AdBlue faults for what the messages mean and Ford diagnostics for how the system is read. Ring 01744 808586 with the mileage left on the countdown.
We repair Ford Transit, Transit Custom, Connect and Courier vans as well as the cars, and the vans bring their own pattern: clutches and dual-mass flywheels on hard-worked examples, DPFs on stop-start urban work, the 1.5 TDCi wet belt on the Connect and Courier, and the EcoBlue AdBlue system on the newer full-size Transit.
A van off the road costs its owner every day, so the read and the repair are turned round as quickly as the job allows. See Ford Transit van repair and van MOT and servicing St Helens.
A Ford should be serviced every 12 months or at the mileage Ford specifies for the engine, whichever comes first, with the years figure applying even to a car that has barely moved, and on an EcoBoost or a TDCi the oil specification at every service matters as much as the interval.
Brake fluid is on a two-year cycle and the wet belt has its own interval alongside. See Ford servicing, Fiesta servicing and what is included in a car service.
We use genuine Ford parts where the job calls for them and OE-quality parts from the manufacturers who supply Ford where they are the same part in a different box, and either keeps the warranty because the specification, not the logo, is what the rules require.
Wet belt kits, Powershift clutch packs and software-dependent modules are where the genuine part earns its price; pads, filters and bushes from the OE supplier do not. You are told which is being fitted and why. See brake repairs and car repair cost.
We read Ford fault codes on manufacturer-level diagnostic software that talks to every module on the car, not a generic code reader, so a warning light is traced to the module that logged it with the live data and freeze-frame that explain why, and coding and software updates are done on the same tool.
That matters on a car where one failed sensor can light three warnings. See Ford diagnostics and the engine warning light.
A Ford diesel that is hard to start in the cold, with long cranking and a puff of smoke, usually has one or more failed glow plugs, and on the TDCi engines they are tested individually and replaced carefully because a snapped glow plug in the head turns a small job into a big one.
If the glow plug light flashes while driving, it is a different fault and needs reading on the tool. See Ford glow plug replacement and Ford diagnostics.
A Ford that knocks over bumps usually has a worn drop link, a front lower arm bush or, on the Focus, Kuga and C-Max, a broken rear spring, and the answer is the part measured on the ramp and replaced in pairs with the alignment checked afterwards, because the knock is the cheap warning before the tyre wear and the MOT failure.
See Ford suspension repair for the job and wheel alignment St Helens for what a worn bush does to the tyres.
We work on the Ford Puma and Kuga hybrids and the Mustang Mach-E, reading battery state of health on the manufacturer-level tool, servicing the engine and the parts an electric car still has, and dealing with the brakes that corrode from light use because the car does most of its braking through the motor.
High-voltage work is inspection and diagnosis by qualified technicians. See hybrid and EV repair St Helens and MOT St Helens.
A Ford service takes around two hours for an interim, two to three for a full and half a day for a major, with most owners dropping the car in the morning and collecting it the same afternoon, and the wet belt or a DPF regeneration adding time where the read shows they are due.
If the service turns up a belt due, a coolant leak or a judder, you get a phone call with the price before anything is done. Pairing the service with the MOT saves a second trip. See car servicing St Helens or ring 01744 808586.
You can spread the cost of Ford repairs over three, four or six months at nought per cent with Payment Assist, decided on a soft search that does not mark your credit file, which matters on a car where a wet belt, a Powershift or a turbo job is a real bill.
Spreading it means the belt is done at the interval rather than after the oil light. See pay monthly car repairs for how it works and car repair cost for the figures, or ring 01744 808586.
We cover Ford service and repair for St Helens and the towns around it, including Haydock, Prescot, Rainhill, Newton-le-Willows, Billinge, Eccleston, Widnes, Warrington, Wigan and Liverpool, from the workshop on Boundary Road, because wet belt, gearbox and DPF work need the ramp and the manufacturer tool.
Collection can be arranged where a car is not safe to drive. See the contact page for directions and garage services in St Helens for everything else done here.
