Citroen Diagnostics St Helens

Two things bring most Citroen owners here. A dashboard message that names a system rather than a part, and the 1.2 PureTech belt that runs inside the engine oil. We read the first properly and we will tell you the truth about the second.

Citroen diagnostics St Helens — start here

The three things Citroen owners ring about

One is a belt, one is a message that could mean a dozen things, and one is a countdown that will eventually stop the car.

The 1.2 PureTech belt

It runs inside the engine, in the oil, and it degrades with the oil rather than simply with mileage. It is the single most important thing to know about these engines.

Citroen wet belt replacement →

“Engine fault: repair needed”

A heading rather than a diagnosis. It covers a wide range of causes, some of them cheap, and the message itself cannot tell you which one you have.

Citroen warning lights →

The urea countdown

AdBlue on the diesels. The car drives normally while the miles fall, then refuses to restart. Filling the tank only helps if the tank was the problem.

Citroen diagnostics St Helens — the whole picture

Citroen diagnostics St Helens, translating what the dashboard actually means

Citroen write their warnings as sentences rather than symbols, which sounds helpful until you realise one sentence covers a dozen possible causes. Reading the car properly is what turns a message into an answer. We are Fastlane Autocare at 232-254 Boundary Road, and the registration tells us which engine we are dealing with.

The 1.2 PureTech is the engine that defines ownership of a modern Citroen. Its timing belt runs in the oil, sheds material as it ages, and that material can find its way to the oil pick-up. See PureTech diagnostics.

The 1.6 HDi is the diesel we see most of the older cars on. Turbo oil feed, injectors and the emissions side account for most of what comes through the door on these.

Warning messages like “engine fault: repair needed” or “anti-pollution fault” are categories. What matters is the fault stored behind them and the conditions it set in — see Citroen warning light diagnostics.

The emissions side covers a filling particulate filter, a sooted EGR valve feeding it faster than it should, and on the newer diesels an AdBlue system that will stop the car.

Suspension deserves its own mention on these cars. Citroen ride quality depends on bushes and mounts that wear quietly, and the first sign is usually a knock rather than a warning — see Citroen suspension repair.

Electrical faults on the older cars often trace back to one earth or one connector rather than the several separate failures the symptoms suggest.

We look after the range, from the C3 and C1 through the C4, Berlingo, DS models and the Relay vans, with the repair done in the same building as the test.

Whatever it turns out to be, it is fixed here: Citroen servicing and repair, clutches, cambelts and MOT testing, with pay monthly car repairs on the bigger jobs.

Citroen diagnostics St Helens — the fault list

Common Citroen faults, what actually causes them, and what we do

Find your engine or your dashboard message and the likely cause is usually beside it. This is what our Citroen work is genuinely made of.

Citroen faults we see most, by engine, message and system
Engine, message or system What you notice What it usually is What we do about it
1.2 PureTech petrol
C3, C4, C1, DS models
A rattle on start-up, an oil warning that comes and goes, or oil use that was not there before. The timing belt runs in the oil and sheds material as it ages. That material can restrict the oil pick-up strainer. Establish belt history, check oil condition and level properly, then give you a straight answer. See Citroen wet belt replacement.
1.6 HDi diesel Loss of power, a whistle or smoke, sometimes a turbo warning after a period of neglected oil changes. Turbo oil feed restriction, injector wear, or the emissions side loading faster than it should. Boost measured against commanded boost and injector behaviour tested before anything is quoted.
Any engine “Engine fault: repair needed” on the dash, often with the car still driving normally. A heading covering a wide range of causes. The stored fault behind it is the only thing that identifies which. Read every module and the conditions the fault set in. See Citroen warning lights.
Diesels “Anti-pollution fault”, then reduced power on the way home. A filling particulate filter, very often with a sooted EGR valve feeding it faster than it should. Soot loading and regeneration history read before anything comes off. See Citroen DPF repair.
Newer diesels A urea or AdBlue countdown warning the car will not restart, with nothing else apparently wrong. A dosing, quality or level sensor fault rather than an empty tank, which is why topping up often changes nothing. Read the emissions module and test the dosing side before condemning a tank. See Citroen AdBlue repair.
EGR side Rough running, a flat spot, or an emissions message that returns a few weeks after being cleared. A sooted or sticking EGR valve, usually on a car doing short journeys that never get properly hot. Tested in operation rather than replaced on suspicion. See Citroen EGR valve replacement.
Suspension A knock over speed humps, or uneven tyre wear noticed at service time. Bushes, top mounts and drop links wearing quietly. Citroen ride quality depends on them more than most. Inspected on the ramp before an MOT rather than after. See Citroen suspension repair.
Clutch, manual cars A high biting point, a smell after a hill, or difficulty selecting gears when hot. Clutch wear, or on some models the release system rather than the clutch itself. Tested to establish which, because only one of those two is the larger job. See Citroen clutch repair.
Electrical, older models Several unrelated oddities at once. Windows, lights, wipers or the display behaving strangely. One poor earth or a corroded connector upsetting far more circuits than the symptoms suggest. Supplies, earths and connectors tested in sequence. See auto electrician.
Battery and charging A car that starts fine most days then refuses after standing over a weekend. A tired battery, or a parasitic drain pulling current with everything switched off. Rest voltage, charging voltage and a drain test in sequence. See battery fitting.

Citroen diagnostics St Helens — before you panic

A Citroen message is a category, not a diagnosis

“Engine fault: repair needed” does not tell you the engine has failed. “Anti-pollution fault” does not mean you need a new filter. Both are headings covering a range of causes, and some of them are inexpensive. Tell us the exact wording on your dashboard and what the car is doing, and you will get a realistic idea of what sits behind it before you book anything.

Citroen diagnostics St Helens — how it runs

What happens when you bring a Citroen in

You should leave with an answer and a figure, not a list of possibilities.

  1. We take the registration first

It gives us the exact engine, which on a Citroen decides almost everything. A C3 can be a PureTech petrol or an HDi diesel, and they have nothing in common.

  2. We read every module

An anti-pollution message often has its cause stored outside the engine control unit, and a generic reader never reaches it.

  3. We look at the conditions the fault set in

Engine speed, load and temperature at that moment. That is usually what separates a sensor from something mechanical.

  4. We test what the codes point at

Live data with the engine running, actuator tests, and on the PureTech engines an honest look at oil condition and level before anything else.

  5. You get one answer and one price

Before anything is ordered. Where the repair goes ahead here, the diagnostic time folds into the job.

  6. We repair it here and you drive away

PureTech belts, HDi emissions work, suspension, clutches and the MOT are all finished on our own ramps, with a DVSA-approved test bay on the same site.

Ring 01744 808586 with the registration, or see what drives repair costs.

Citroen diagnostics St Helens — the engine everyone asks about

The 1.2 PureTech, and why the belt matters so much

It is a good engine in most respects. The problem is one design decision, and it is the one thing every owner of a modern Citroen should understand.

The timing belt runs inside the engine, in the oil. That is not a fault in itself, and plenty of manufacturers have done it. What it means in practice is that the belt ages with the condition of the oil rather than simply with the miles, so a car on long oil intervals or the wrong grade asks far more of that belt than the mileage suggests.

As the belt degrades it sheds material. That material goes where the oil goes, and the place it causes trouble is the oil pick-up strainer. A partially blocked strainer means reduced oil pressure, and reduced oil pressure on any engine is the beginning of a much larger bill.

The symptoms owners notice first are a rattle on start-up, an oil warning that comes and goes, or simply oil consumption that was not there before. None of those are things to watch for a few months.

What we do is straightforward: establish the belt history, check the oil condition and level properly, and be honest about what the car in front of us actually needs. Ring 01744 808586, or see Citroen wet belt replacement and which cars have a wet belt.

Citroen diagnostics St Helens — the bill

A diagnosis is cheaper than a guess, and easier to spread

Knowing what is wrong costs less than replacing parts until something changes. And once you do know, the repair itself can go across four months interest free on pay monthly car repairs, approved on a soft search that leaves your credit file alone.

Around £250 per month over 4 months

Citroen diagnostics St Helens — failed the test?

Half of these failures are diagnostic, not mechanical

Plenty of MOT failures cannot be adjusted or bolted away. They need reading, and that is exactly the work described here.

Since the rules changed in May 2018, a lit engine management lamp is a major defect on any petrol first used from 1 July 2003 and any diesel from 1 July 2008 — and so is a lamp that has been removed or disconnected. The ABS warning is the same, and anti-lock brakes cannot be taken off a car built on or after 1 January 2010. Airbag and stability lamps fail when they indicate a real fault.

Then there is smoke. Any visible smoke from an exhaust with a particulate filter behind it fails on its own, and a filter showing signs of having been cut open fails the car completely. Deleting one is not something we will do. Finding out why it is filling is, and the answer usually sits with the EGR side, the fuelling, or a car that never gets a long enough run.

Bring the sheet with the car if you have one. We test and repair under the same roof, so there is no handing the car between two places, and it is worth reading up on what an MOT advisory actually commits you to.

Citroen diagnostics St Helens — the figure

Why two cars with the same warning light cost different amounts

The light is the same. What is behind it may not be, and that is what you are paying somebody to establish. Four things move the number.

Whether the fault is there when we look. A code stored on every start is quick. One that appears once a fortnight at speed means the car stays, gets logging equipment fitted, and gets driven properly.

How many systems are involved. One module with one code is straightforward. Several complaining at once usually points at something they share — a supply, an earth, a network — and the answer is in the overlap rather than in any one of them.

What has been done to it already. Parts fitted without being set up correctly behave exactly like faulty ones. Separating those two takes longer than starting with a car nobody has touched.

Whether we carry out the repair. Diagnosis time is absorbed into the job when the work goes ahead here rather than being charged separately. Ask that of anybody before you book — it moves the real cost more than any hourly rate.

Ring 01744 808586, describe what it is doing, and you will get an honest bracket before the car comes in.

Want to know before you commit?

Send the model, the engine and what the car is doing. You will get an honest opinion on whether it needs booking in this week or whether it can wait, and if the car will not move our mobile mechanics can come to it.

Citroen diagnostics St Helens — the local run

A short drive from most of the borough

Boundary Road is minutes off the A58 and the Linkway, which is why so much of St Helens ends up here. If the car has dropped into limp mode, come the short way rather than the quick way.

Plenty travel further than that, from Wigan and Liverpool, and the reason is nearly always the same: somebody has already read the fault once and it came back. General car diagnostics cover every make we have not listed.

Citroen diagnostics St Helens — local knowledge

What St Helens roads do to a Citroen

How a car has been used matters more than what the odometer says, and on these cars it shows in two specific places.

The first is oil. A Citroen doing short local journeys never gets fully up to temperature, which is hard on oil, and on a PureTech engine oil condition is the thing the timing belt depends on. That is why mileage alone is a poor guide to whether the belt is due, and why we ask about the journeys rather than just the numbers.

The second is the suspension. Citroen build cars that ride well, and that ride depends on bushes, mounts and drop links that wear quietly rather than failing outright. Speed humps and patched surfaces work them harder than smooth roads, and a knock over a familiar bump is usually the first sign — see Citroen suspension repair and what an MOT advisory really means.

Citroen diagnostics St Helens — worth knowing

“Anti-pollution fault” almost never means what owners think

It reads like the car is about to fail an emissions test, and that is rarely what has happened. It is a broad heading Citroen use for anything the engine management decides is affecting emissions, and that list runs from a sensor giving an implausible reading through to a filter that genuinely needs work.

The reason it matters is that the cheap causes and the expensive ones sit side by side under the same message. We have seen cars quoted for a particulate filter that needed a sensor, and we have seen filters left far too long because the message was cleared and ignored. Reading the stored fault, and the conditions it was recorded in, is the only thing that tells you which one you have.

Citroen diagnostics St Helens — the practical part

Drop it off and carry on with your day

Fault finding done properly takes as long as it takes, and the quick version is the one that gets paid for twice. The town centre is a few minutes away.

There is coffee and the shops around Church Square within walking distance, Taylor Park and Sherdley Park are a couple of minutes by car, and the World of Glass fills an hour comfortably. If you are travelling on, St Helens Central is close enough to walk to.

Mention collection when you book if that is easier. Faults that only show up warm or under load mean the car stays with us for a road test rather than coming back with a maybe attached, and you always get a call with the finding before anything is done. Bigger jobs can be spread on pay monthly car repairs, and pairing the visit with an MOT or a service means one trip rather than two.

A photo and a registration is usually enough to start

Citroen diagnostics St Helens — straight answers

Questions Citroen owners ask us most

What Citroen owners ring up and ask before they book, answered the way the technician would answer at the counter.

What do the warning lights on my Citroen actually mean?

Citroen write most of their warnings as sentences rather than symbols, and almost all of them name a system rather than a part. The message tells you where the car has found a problem, not what the problem is.

That is why two cars showing identical wording can need completely different work. “Engine fault: repair needed” covers a wide range of causes, and so does “anti-pollution fault”. One of them can be a sensor and the other a filter, with the same sentence on the dash.

The useful information is the fault stored behind the message and the conditions it was recorded in. Engine speed, load and temperature at the moment it set are usually what separate a sensor from something mechanical.

Read it before you clear it, because clearing throws that evidence away. Tell us the exact wording on 01744 808586, or see Citroen warning light diagnostics.

What does “engine fault: repair needed” mean on a Citroen?

It is a heading rather than a diagnosis. The engine management has recorded something it considers serious enough to flag, and the message deliberately does not tell you what, because the same wording covers a long list of causes.

Sometimes the car drives perfectly normally with it showing, which tempts owners to carry on. Sometimes it arrives in reduced power. Neither of those tells you how expensive the answer is going to be, and neither is a reason to keep clearing it and hoping.

The causes we see behind it most often are sensor readings the engine cannot reconcile, emissions system faults, and on the diesels the turbo or fuelling side. There is no way to tell from the wording alone.

Do not authorise work on the strength of the message. Ring 01744 808586 with the exact words and what the car is doing, or see Citroen diagnostics.

What does “anti-pollution fault” mean on a Citroen?

It means the engine management has decided something is affecting emissions. It does not mean the car has failed anything, and it very often does not mean you need a new particulate filter.

The range of causes underneath it is wide. A sensor giving an implausible reading, an EGR valve that has sooted up, a filter that genuinely needs work, or on the newer diesels something in the AdBlue system.

This is the message we most often see cars quoted against wrongly. We have had cars in priced for a particulate filter that actually needed a sensor, and we have seen filters left far too long because the message was cleared and forgotten about for another six months.

Reading the stored fault is the only thing that tells you which you have. See Citroen DPF repair or EGR valve replacement.

Is the 1.2 PureTech wet belt really a problem?

It is a real issue and worth taking seriously, but it is manageable if you understand what actually drives it. The belt runs inside the engine in the oil, so it ages with the condition of that oil rather than simply with the mileage.

As the belt degrades it sheds material, and that material travels with the oil. Where it causes real damage is the oil pick-up strainer, because a restricted pick-up means reduced oil pressure, and that is how a belt problem becomes an engine problem.

What makes the difference is oil. Correct grade, changed at sensible intervals, and a car that is not doing nothing but short cold journeys. Cars looked after that way generally do fine.

Send us the registration and we will tell you what yours has had and what it needs. See Citroen wet belt replacement.

When does the 1.2 PureTech belt need replacing?

Sooner than the original schedules suggested, and the interval has been revised more than once. Because the belt ages with the oil rather than the mileage, the honest answer depends on how the car has actually been used.

A car doing regular longer runs with the correct oil at sensible intervals is in a very different position from one doing nothing but short cold trips on extended servicing. The odometer does not distinguish between them.

That is why we ask about the journeys rather than just the figures, and why we would rather look at the oil and the service history than quote a number down the phone. The state of the oil tells you more about that belt than the odometer ever will.

Ring 01744 808586 with the registration and we will give you a straight answer for your car. See PureTech diagnostics.

Does my Citroen C3 have a wet belt?

If it is a 1.2 PureTech petrol, yes. If it is one of the HDi diesels, no, it uses a conventional belt running dry outside the oil. The engine decides it, not the model or the year.

That single question changes what the car costs to own, so it is worth establishing rather than assuming. A great many C3 owners have no idea which of the two they have.

On the PureTech the things to watch are oil condition and level, plus any rattle in the first seconds after start-up or an oil warning that comes and goes. On the HDi it is simply keeping to the published belt interval, by age as well as mileage.

Send the registration and we will confirm which engine yours has. See C3 wet belt replacement or which cars have a wet belt.

What happens if a PureTech wet belt fails?

The immediate risk is not the belt snapping so much as what it leaves behind. Material shed from a degrading belt collects in the oil and can restrict the oil pick-up, and low oil pressure damages an engine quickly.

That is why the warning signs to act on are oil-related rather than noise-related. An oil pressure warning that appears and clears, oil consumption that was not there before, or a rattle in the first seconds after start-up.

If the belt does fail outright on a running engine the damage is usually extensive, because the valves and pistons are no longer being kept apart by anything. That is the outcome worth spending money to avoid.

None of that is a reason to panic, but it is a reason not to defer it. Ring 01744 808586 and we will tell you honestly where your car stands, or see Citroen wet belt replacement.

What are the common problems with the Citroen 1.6 HDi?

The three we see most are turbo trouble caused by oil supply, injector wear, and the emissions side loading up. All three are far more likely on a car that has had long or neglected oil changes.

The turbo issue is the one worth understanding. The oil feed to the turbo is easily restricted by carbon and sludge from tired oil, and a starved turbo does not last. Replacing it without cleaning the feed simply repeats the failure.

Injectors give themselves away through rough running, knocking at idle or hard starting, and they are tested by back-leakage to find the genuinely weak one rather than replaced as a full set on a hunch.

The emissions side is the particulate filter and the EGR valve, and on these engines they almost always want looking at together rather than one at a time. Ring 01744 808586 or see Citroen service and repair.

Can you tell me what my Citroen fault code means?

We can read the code, but the code on its own is rarely the answer. It names a circuit or a system that reported something unexpected, not the component that has failed, and acting on the code alone is how the wrong parts get fitted.

What turns a code into a diagnosis is the freeze-frame data stored with it. That records what the engine was doing at the moment the fault set, and it usually separates an electrical problem from a mechanical one straight away.

The other thing that matters is how many faults are stored and in which modules. One fault in three places usually means a supply or an earth rather than three failures.

Bring the car in and you will get the meaning and the cause rather than just the number. See Citroen warning light diagnostics.

What is the urea warning on my Citroen?

Urea is Citroen's word for what most makes call AdBlue, which is why the message confuses people who have never heard the term. It refers to the exhaust fluid the diesel uses to clean up its emissions, and the warning is about that system rather than the engine.

Citroen phrase it in stages. An early message is informational and simply wants topping up. A message quoting a remaining mileage is a countdown, and at the end of it the engine will start no more times.

The detail that catches Citroen owners specifically is that the tank sits under the car on many models and its level sensor is a known weak point. A sensor reporting empty on a full tank produces exactly the same message as an actually empty tank.

So establish which you have before you buy fluid. We read the emissions module and test the dosing side. See Citroen AdBlue repair.

Do I need a Citroen authorised repairer, or will an independent do?

For everything except an outstanding recall or a goodwill claim, an independent with the right equipment will do, and on the PureTech engines in particular the equipment matters far more than the sign above the door.

Recalls are the exception worth knowing about. Those are carried out by a franchised dealer at no cost to you, so it is worth checking your registration against the outstanding-recall service before paying anyone for related work.

Everything else is open, including servicing under warranty provided the schedule and the oil specification are correct and it is recorded. What you should ask any garage is whether they can read the car module by module and write values back afterwards, because a great many Citroen faults record themselves outside the engine control unit where a plug-in reader never looks.

We are at 232-254 Boundary Road, St Helens. Ring 01744 808586 or see Citroen service and repair.

Do I have to use a Citroen approved garage to keep my warranty?

No. You are entitled to have your Citroen serviced by an independent garage without losing the manufacturer's warranty, provided the work follows the correct schedule with parts of the right specification and is properly recorded.

This is worth stating plainly because a lot of owners believe the opposite and pay more than they need to for years. The rules protecting it are long established and exist so drivers are not tied to one place.

On a PureTech engine the oil specification part is not a detail to gloss over. The timing belt depends directly on oil condition, so using the correct grade at the correct interval matters considerably more on these cars than it does on most others.

What creates a warranty problem is cutting corners on any of that, not the choice of garage. We service to the manufacturer schedule, use the correct specification and record it properly. See Citroen servicing in St Helens.

What do the warning lights on a Citroen C1 mean?

The C1 uses a simpler set of symbols than the larger Citroens, so most of its warnings are the standard ones: engine management, oil pressure, coolant temperature, brakes, battery charging and ABS.

The two to treat as stop-driving warnings are oil pressure and coolant temperature. Both mean the engine is at risk right now, and carrying on with either lit turns a modest bill into a large one very quickly.

The engine management light is different again. If it is steady and the car drives normally it wants reading soon rather than immediately. If it is flashing, that indicates a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter, so stop driving and ring us.

Tell us which light it is and whether it is steady or flashing when you ring 01744 808586, because that one detail changes the advice completely. See Citroen warning lights.

Does the wet belt problem affect the diesel Citroens as well?

No. The belt-in-oil design belongs to the PureTech petrol engines. Citroen's HDi and BlueHDi diesels use a conventional timing belt that runs dry, outside the oil, with a published replacement interval.

That is worth knowing because the two need completely different thinking. On a PureTech, oil condition is effectively belt maintenance. On an HDi, the belt is a scheduled job you book by mileage and age.

It also means a diesel Citroen is not exposed to the oil pick-up problem that makes the PureTech belt such a talking point. If somebody has quoted you on that basis for an HDi, check which engine the car actually has before agreeing to anything, because the two jobs are not the same work or the same price.

Send us the registration and we will tell you which you have and what its interval is. See Citroen cambelt replacement.

Why does my Citroen keep bringing back an EGR fault after it has been cleared?

Because clearing a fault removes the message, not the cause. An EGR valve that is sooted or sticking will set the same fault again within a few weeks, and each time it is cleared you lose the evidence of when it happened.

The underlying reason is usually the driving pattern. Short journeys that never get the engine properly hot leave soot where a longer run would have burned it away, and the valve gradually stops moving freely.

We test the valve in operation rather than replacing it on suspicion, because a valve that is being commanded correctly but not responding points somewhere quite different from one that is not being commanded at all. That distinction decides what actually gets replaced.

If the same message keeps coming back, stop clearing it and get it read properly instead. Ring 01744 808586 or see Citroen EGR valve replacement.

My Citroen knocks over speed humps. What is it?

Almost always suspension rather than anything structural, and on a Citroen it is worth investigating early. These cars ride well because of bushes, top mounts and drop links that wear quietly rather than failing outright.

A knock over a familiar bump is usually the first sign, and it tends to get blamed on the road for a while before anyone looks at the car. Uneven tyre wear noticed at service time is the other common way it turns up.

It matters for the MOT as much as for comfort. Worn suspension components generate advisories and outright failures, and finding them before the test is a great deal less disruptive and usually cheaper than finding them afterwards.

A knock is also worth checking rather than living with because worn bushes change how the car behaves under braking. Get it looked at on the ramp. See Citroen suspension repair or what an MOT advisory really means.

My Citroen clutch feels high. Does it need replacing?

Not necessarily. A high biting point can be clutch wear, but on several Citroen models the release system is just as likely, and only one of those two is the larger job.

The symptoms that point at genuine clutch wear are a smell after a long hill, slip under load in a high gear, or a biting point that has moved gradually over months rather than suddenly. Difficulty selecting gears when hot points more towards the release side than the clutch itself.

It is worth establishing which before anything is booked, because the difference in cost between the two is substantial, and so is the difference in how long the car is off the road while the work is done.

My PureTech is using oil between services. Should I be worried?

On a PureTech it is worth investigating rather than simply topping up, because oil is the thing the timing belt lives in and a falling level changes the conditions that belt is working under.

There are ordinary explanations. A small consumption on a hard-worked turbo engine is not unusual, and a car doing short cold journeys will show a level that moves about more than one doing steady miles.

What we want to rule out is oil going somewhere it should not, and the checks are straightforward: a pressure test of the cooling system, a look at the turbo feed, and an honest assessment of the oil's condition rather than just its level.

Keep it topped to the correct grade in the meantime, and tell us how much it is using over how many miles on 01744 808586. See PureTech diagnostics.

Is a petrol or diesel Berlingo the better bet for a working van?

It depends almost entirely on the journeys. A van doing steady longer runs suits the diesel; one doing short local drops all day is asking the diesel to do the one thing it is worst at, and the petrol avoids that problem entirely.

The reason is the particulate filter. It needs a sustained run at temperature to clear itself, and a day of ten-minute hops never provides one. Every interrupted attempt leaves the filter fuller and pushes fuel into the oil.

The petrol Berlingo sidesteps that but brings the PureTech belt into the picture instead, which means oil condition and interval become the thing you watch rather than regenerations.

Neither choice is wrong, they just fail differently, and the van you already own can usually be worked with once you know which trap applies to it. Tell us the shape of the working day and we will tell you which. See Citroen DPF cleaning or ring 01744 808586.

Should I have a used Citroen checked before I buy it?

Yes, and on a Citroen there is one question that matters more than all the others: which engine is in it. That single answer changes what the car will cost you over the next few years.

If it is a 1.2 PureTech, what you want is the belt history and the oil history, and honestly the oil history matters more. A car with no record of either is a cost you are taking on.

If it is an HDi diesel, the questions are the belt interval, the state of the emissions system and whether the turbo has been looked after through regular oil changes.

Beyond that, what is stored in the modules that is not currently showing a light tells you a great deal about how it has been treated. Send us the registration before you commit. See PureTech diagnostics.
