It's increasingly common on modern cars. Engine bays are packed tightly and headlight units are often mounted so there's no access to the back of the bulb from above. On many newer models the only safe way to reach it is to remove the front bumper, or the whole headlight unit, to get at the bulb holder.

It sounds dramatic but it's a routine job for us. Doing it properly avoids snapping the plastic clips and connectors that get damaged when people try to force it on the driveway, so it's genuinely worth having done right.

It can, yes. Lighting and signalling faults are one of the most common reasons cars fail the MOT. The tester checks that every required light works, is the right colour and is aimed correctly, so a single blown headlight, brake light or number-plate bulb is enough for a fail or advisory.

Because it's such a cheap, quick fix, it's daft to lose a test over it. Sort your bulbs and wipers first, or let us check them, and you remove one of the easiest reasons to fail.

As a rule of thumb, around once a year, though it depends on use and wear. The tell-tale signs are smearing, streaking, juddering across the glass, or the rubber looking split and perished. If you're having to go over the screen twice to see clearly, they're due.

Worn blades don't just annoy you, they can drag grit across the glass and score the windscreen, and poor wiper performance is an MOT point too. New blades are inexpensive and we'll fit them while you wait.

It varies with the bulb type and how easy it is to reach. A standard sidelight or number-plate bulb is cheap and quick, while a modern HID or LED unit, or a headlight that needs the bumper off, costs more because the parts and labour are greater. Wiper blades are priced per pair or singly.

A bulb that blows again soon after fitting usually points to something beyond the bulb itself. Common causes are a corroded or loose connector, moisture getting into the light unit, a wiring fault, or vibration. Sometimes handling a halogen bulb with bare fingers can shorten its life too.

Rather than keep buying bulbs, it's worth having the circuit and connector checked. Our free car health check is a sensible starting point, and we can trace the underlying fault properly.

It depends on the car. Where a manufacturer offers LED as a factory option and the unit is designed for it, an upgrade can be fine. But dropping aftermarket LED bulbs into a headlight built for halogen can cause glare, an MOT concern, and isn't always road-legal, so we'll be straight with you about what's suitable.

Driving with a defective light can land you with a fixed penalty and points, and at night or in poor visibility a dead headlight, brake light or indicator is genuinely dangerous, both for you and everyone around you. It's not worth the risk when the fix is so quick.
