What bodywork can actually be repaired?

Bodywork and Accident Repair: What We Handle

Not every bit of damage needs a full respray, and not every knock is just cosmetic. The right repair depends on what's actually happened, and being honest about that is genuinely where a good bodyshop earns its keep, matching the method to the damage rather than over-repairing.

🔨

Dents & Scuffs

Car park dinks, kerbed bumpers, trolley dents and scratches, tidied up and refinished so they disappear rather than nag at you.

🛠

Panel & Paint

Damaged panels repaired or replaced and properly repainted, with the colour matched to your car so the repair blends in.

💥

Accident & Structural

Collision damage, including work on the structure of the car where needed, brought back to straight and safe.

Why does colour matching matter so much?

Bodywork and Accident Repair: Getting The Finish Right

A repair you can spot isn't finished

The difference between an amateur repair and a proper one usually comes down to the finish. Car paint isn't a single flat colour, it shifts with age, sunlight and the exact factory batch, so simply spraying on the "same" colour from a tin rarely blends in. A visible mismatch or a patch of orange-peel paint stands out and can actually knock value off the car. Once the front end is back together the headlight alignment is read again on the beam tester, because a bumper and a headlight that have been off are never quite where they started.

Proper colour matching, and blending the paint into the surrounding panels rather than stopping at a hard edge, is what makes a repair genuinely disappear. It takes the right equipment and a careful eye, and it's the part that separates a repair you notice from one you don't.

The same goes for structural work: a panel that looks fine but isn't sitting straight, or a repair that compromises how the car would perform in another impact, isn't really fixed. Getting it right underneath matters as much as the paint on top.

What kinds of damage do we see most?

Bodywork and Accident Repair: Common Jobs

Most bodywork damage falls into a handful of familiar categories, and the good news is that a lot of it is very repairable when it's dealt with rather than left to get worse, especially where rust is involved.

Bumper ScuffsKerbed and car-park bumper damage, refinished.
DentsFrom small dinks to larger panel dents.
ScratchesKey marks and scrapes made good and repainted.
Panel DamageRepaired or replaced after an impact.
CorrosionRust treated before it spreads through a panel.

How does an insurance repair work?

Bodywork and Accident Repair: Insurance & Claims

⚠ You can usually choose who repairs your car

After an accident, insurers will often steer you toward their own approved repairer, but it's genuinely worth knowing that in most cases you have the right to choose where your car is repaired. You don't have to simply accept the first garage you're offered.

We can carry out insurance repair work and help you through the claim process, liaising as needed so it's less of a headache for you. If the damage isn't going through insurance, or it's below your excess, we'll give you a straightforward quote to sort it privately, which is often the sensible route for smaller jobs.

Honestly worth knowing: for minor damage, it's frequently cheaper to pay for the repair directly than to claim, once you factor in your excess and the effect a claim can have on your future premiums and no-claims discount. We'll always be upfront about which route makes more sense for your situation.

What happens when you bring it in?

Bodywork and Accident Repair: How We Work

Bring the car in, or send us photos to start with, and we'll assess the damage and explain your options honestly, repair versus replace, claim versus private, and what the finish will look like. Then we get it back to straight, properly refinished and colour-matched, so it looks as it should.

Is it worth fixing small damage?

Bodywork and Accident Repair: Small Damage, Big Reasons

Cosmetic today, corrosion tomorrow

It's tempting to live with a scratch or a small dent, but there's a genuine case for sorting it. Once paint is broken and bare metal is exposed, moisture gets in and rust starts, so a cosmetic scratch can quietly become a corrosion problem that spreads through the panel and costs far more to fix later.

There's also the value side: tidy, damage-free bodywork makes a real difference when you come to sell or part-exchange, often more than the repair costs. Dealing with small damage promptly is usually the cheaper decision in the long run, not the extravagant one.

Bodywork & Accident Repair FAQ

Bodywork and Accident Repair: FAQ

Real, in-depth answers to what people actually ask before booking bodywork.

Do you handle insurance repairs?

Yes. We can carry out insurance repair work and help you through the claim so it's less hassle. Importantly, in most cases you have the right to choose who repairs your car, you don't have to simply use the insurer's first suggested garage, even if they steer you that way.

If you'd rather not claim, or the damage is below your excess, we'll quote you to sort it privately instead, which is often the more sensible route for smaller jobs.

Can you repair a dent without respraying the whole panel?

Often, yes, it depends on the dent. Where the paint is unbroken and the dent is the right type, techniques exist to work it out without a respray, which is quicker and more cost-effective. Where the paint is cracked or the damage is more severe, a proper repair and refinish is the right approach.

We'll look at the actual damage and recommend the method that genuinely suits it, rather than automatically going for the biggest, most expensive repair.

Do you do bumper scuff repairs?

Yes, scuffed and kerbed bumpers are one of the most common jobs we see. Bumpers take the brunt of tight parking and low walls, and a scuffed bumper makes an otherwise tidy car look neglected.

We repair and refinish the bumper and colour-match it so the repair blends in properly, rather than leaving a patch that stands out. Send us a photo and we'll give you an idea of what's involved.

Will the paint match the rest of my car?

That's exactly the aim, and it's the part that separates a good repair from an obvious one. Paint shifts with age and sunlight, so we colour-match to your car's actual current colour rather than just the factory code, and blend the paint into the surrounding area so there's no hard edge.

Done properly, a repair should be genuinely difficult to spot afterwards. That's the standard we work to.

My car's been in an accident — where do I start?

First, make sure everyone's safe and the incident is reported as it needs to be. When it comes to the car, get in touch with us, and if it isn't driveable, our vehicle recovery can bring it in. We'll assess the damage and talk you through your options, including whether to go through insurance.

Remember you can usually choose your own repairer, so you're not obliged to use whoever your insurer suggests first. We'll help make the process as straightforward as possible from there.

Do you repair structural or chassis damage?

Yes. Where an impact has affected the structure of the car, not just the outer panels, it needs bringing back to straight properly, because the structure is what protects you in another impact. This is genuinely not something to cut corners on.

Where corrosion is the issue rather than impact, our welding team can carry out MOT-compliant structural repairs. Either way, we'll be honest about what's needed to make the car properly safe.

How long do bodywork repairs take?

It genuinely depends on the job. A single scuff or small dent can be a quick turnaround, while accident or multi-panel work, especially anything involving paint that needs to cure and blend properly, takes longer. Rushing paintwork is a false economy, it needs the right time to come out well.

Once we've seen the damage, we'll give you a realistic timescale rather than an optimistic one, so you can plan around it.

Is it worth repairing a small scratch or dent?

Usually yes, for two reasons. First, once paint is broken and bare metal is exposed, rust can start and spread through the panel, turning a cosmetic scratch into a much bigger, costlier corrosion job. Second, tidy bodywork makes a real difference to resale and part-exchange value.

Dealing with small damage promptly is generally the cheaper decision over time, not an indulgence. We'll give you an honest view on whether something's worth sorting now or genuinely fine to leave.

How do I get a quote for bodywork?

The quickest way is to send us a few clear photos of the damage by WhatsApp on 07943 185471, along with your car's make, model and colour, and we can give you an initial idea. For anything more involved, or an accurate figure, it's best to bring the car in so we can see it properly.

Call 01744 808586 or book online to arrange that. Non-insurance repairs can be spread with our Payment Assist option, over 3, 4 or 6 monthly payments at 0% interest, no hard credit check for bills up to £1,000.

Minor bodywork, and why it is worth doing early

Most bodywork and accident repair in St Helens starts small. A kerbed bumper corner, a car park scuff down a door, a wing that caught a gatepost. None of it stops the car working, so it waits, and that is where it gets expensive.

Once paint is broken the panel underneath is exposed. On a steel wing or sill, water finds the edge of the chip and works outward under the paint, so what was a scuff becomes a rust bubble and then a panel repair. Catching it while it is still paint-deep is the difference between a half-day job and a new panel.

If the damage was not your fault

You are entitled to choose who repairs your car. Insurers will offer their own approved network, and you can use it, but you are not obliged to. A non-fault repair can often be handled without touching your own policy at all, which protects your no claims discount.

Bring the car in and we will look at it properly before anything is committed. We prepare estimates in the format assessors expect and deal with them directly where that is needed, so you are not the one chasing paperwork. If there is structural damage behind the panel we will tell you, because that changes the job and it is not something to find out halfway through.

Straightforward panel work is usually a day or two. Multiple panels, or anything structural, runs longer, and paint needs proper flash-off and bake time. Rushing that is what gives you a finish that lifts within a year, so we quote a realistic timescale rather than the one you want to hear. See our panel repair page for how the individual panels are tackled.

What the estimate covers before you commit

An estimate is not a glance and a number. We look at the panel off the car park, check the gaps and shut lines either side of the damage, and look behind where we can get to, because a bumper that has taken a knock often has a cracked bracket or a bent mounting behind an outwardly tidy face.

You get told what is being repaired, what is being replaced, and why one rather than the other. If something can be repaired we say so, because a repaired original panel keeps the factory paint and is usually the better car afterwards.

We will also tell you roughly how long the car will be with us, and you can ask about a courtesy car when you book so you are not stuck. Nothing starts until you have agreed the figure.
