Alternator & Starter Motor Replacement Cost St Helens

An alternator replacement typically costs £200 to £600 fitted, and a starter motor £150 to £450 — the spread comes down to your make and model and how buried the part is. We test both, plus the battery, before quoting anything, so you never pay to replace a part that wasn't actually the fault.

What is a realistic replacement cost, and what do these parts actually do?

Think of your car's electrical system like a bank account. The battery stores the energy, the starter motor makes one big withdrawal to spin the engine from a standstill, and the alternator is your monthly salary, constantly topping the battery back up while you drive.

If the salary stops arriving, the account runs dry and the car eventually cuts out — that's a failing alternator. If the one-off withdrawal fails, it doesn't matter how full the battery is, the engine simply won't turn over — that's the starter. For a standard UK car, alternator replacement usually runs £200 to £600 fitted, and a starter motor £150 to £450. The spread is wide because the part for a Fiesta costs a fraction of one for a BMW 5-Series, and access varies hugely between cars.

Warning signs

Spotting the symptoms: alternator vs starter motor

Try the headlight test: turn your headlights on and try to start the car. If the lights go completely out, your battery is likely flat. If the lights stay bright but you just hear a click, it's the starter. If the car starts but the lights are dim and flicker, the alternator is on its way out.

A full engine bay check, battery and belt included, before anything is condemned.

A failing alternator: the dashboard battery light stays on while driving, lights dim and brighten with revs, sluggish electrics, a whine or growl from worn bearings, frequent stalling as the battery drains.

A faulty starter motor: a single click when you turn the key, a grinding screech as the drive gear fails to mesh with the flywheel, intermittent starting, or smoke under the bonnet if you keep cranking a dead one.

Why guessing costs more

Why professional diagnostics are worth it

We see it often: someone spends £300 on a new alternator, four hours fitting it, only to find the car still won't start because the real fault was a corroded earth wire or a blown fuse.

  1. Battery load testing

Can the battery actually hold the charge it is being given?

  2. Voltage-drop testing

Are the cables to the starter clean, or is corrosion choking the power?

  3. Current-draw analysis

Is a vampire drain killing the battery overnight?

  4. Oscilloscope testing

On modern cars, is the alternator's ripple clean, or is it frying sensitive electronics?

Do not ignore a grinding starter. If it is screeching against the flywheel, keep cranking and you risk damaging the flywheel too, turning a straightforward job into a gearbox-out repair. If you hear metal on metal, stop and get it looked at.

The part itself

New, reconditioned or used parts?

When it comes to the part itself, you usually have three choices, and they make a real difference to the final bill.

  • Brand new (OE or premium)Best reliability and the longest warranty. What we recommend for most customers.
  • ReconditionedOriginal units stripped, cleaned and fitted with fresh wear parts like brushes and bearings. Often around 30% cheaper and very reliable.
  • Used (scrapyard)We generally advise against it — you have no idea how much life is left, and the labour to fit it is exactly the same. A false economy.
  • Our recommendationNew or reconditioned on anything you plan to keep. The saving from a used unit rarely justifies the risk of it failing again within months.

A starter motor coming off the bellhousing — access like this is what most of the labour time goes on.

Whether it is the alternator or the starter that has failed, the job is the same in principle: disconnect the battery, unbolt the unit, fit the replacement, and reconnect and test the charging or cranking circuit before the car goes back out.

Because we're the largest independent garage in St Helens, we have the buying power to get main-dealer quality parts at independent prices. An alternator or starter failure is rarely budgeted for, so it can also be spread interest-free through Payment Assist.

Repair or replace

Is it cheaper to repair or replace an alternator or starter?

A repair is cheaper whenever the fault is a wearing part rather than the unit's core, and it is always worth ruling that out before ordering a full replacement.

  • Alternator brushes or voltage regulator wornOften repairable, a fraction of a new unit's price.
  • Alternator bearings rumbling or windings failedReplacement, usually with a remanufactured unit.
  • Starter solenoid stickingSometimes repairable on its own.
  • Starter brushes worn or pinion gear chewedReplacement is the honest fix.

Worth knowing: a slipping or broken auxiliary belt produces the exact same warning light and symptoms as a failed alternator, and it is a much smaller job than either. We always check the belt and tensioner first.

The only way to know which category your car is in is to have it tested — a whining alternator is not always a dead one. Call 01744 808586 or see vehicle diagnostics.

The third part of the picture

Do not forget the battery

A failing starter can pull so much current that it damages the battery cells, and an alternator that has stopped charging will leave the battery deeply flat.

Once the main fault is fixed, it's always worth having the battery checked, and if it needs replacing, our battery fitting in St Helens takes only a few minutes. Sorting all three together means you drive away confident the car will start tomorrow, and the morning after.

Alternator & starter St Helens — where drivers come from

Drivers come from across the borough for this

Boundary Road sits a couple of minutes from the A58 and the Linkway. Most of the borough is a short run in.

Also over from Wigan and Liverpool, usually because a part has already been fitted somewhere else and the fault came straight back.

Worth knowing

Why a brand-new alternator can fail within weeks

A replacement alternator that fails early usually had help. A battery that's already dead makes the alternator work at full output continuously, which cooks the internal diodes within weeks. A misaligned or over-tightened belt destroys the bearings. Corroded earth straps and heavy parasitic drains do the same.

That's why we test the battery, the belt and the wiring before AND after fitting — not just the part that failed.

While your car is with us

You do not have to sit and wait for it

Most electrical checks are quick, but proper diagnostics take the time they take. Boundary Road is a few minutes from the town centre, so most people drop the car and carry on with the day.

Church Square and the town centre shops are a short walk if you want a coffee while we work, Taylor Park and Sherdley Park are a couple of minutes away by car, and the World of Glass is worth an hour if you have never been. St Helens Central is close enough to walk to if you are heading on somewhere.

Tell us when you book if collection would suit you better. If it turns into a bigger job it can go on pay monthly car repairs, and you can pair it with a MOT or a service so the car only comes in once.

A photo of the warning light and your reg is usually enough to start

Send the dashboard, the model and roughly what it's doing. A technician replies with what it's likely to be and whether it's safe to drive in.

Owner questions

Questions asked about alternator and starter motor replacement

Real questions asked before an alternator or starter job, answered from what actually happens on the ramp.

How much does a starter motor replacement cost?

A starter motor replacement typically costs £150 to £450 fitted at Fastlane Autocare in St Helens, including the part, labour and a free electrical check first, so you are never paying to replace a part that was never actually faulty. Every quote is against your actual registration, not a generic make and model average. Where you land in that range depends mostly on how buried the starter is behind the gearbox: some cars take under an hour on the ramp, others need the inlet manifold, a heat shield or a subframe moved out of the way first, and that access time is what really moves the final bill more than the part itself.

We test the starter, the battery and the earth connections together before quoting anything, using a load tester and a multimeter, because a flat battery reading below 12.4V at rest or a corroded earth strap can produce exactly the same slow-crank symptoms as a genuinely dying starter. Fitting is usually same-day once the correct part is confirmed and in stock, and every replacement carries a warranty as standard, whether new or reconditioned. Give us your registration on 01744 808586 or via vehicle diagnostics for a price against your specific car.

How much does a new starter cost?

The part alone typically runs £60 to £250 depending on the make and model, before labour and the free electrical check that confirms it is actually the fault are added on top of that figure. Most of that spread comes down to whether the unit is new or a warrantied reconditioned rebuild. A quality remanufactured starter, stripped, rebuilt with new bushes, brushes and a fresh solenoid, usually sits toward the lower end of that range and carries a solid warranty, while some premium, low-volume or performance applications price a good deal higher regardless of the car's age.

We would always rather quote you the fitted price than the part price alone, since access on your particular engine layout can double the labour time even when the part cost itself is identical to a much simpler car. If you are keeping the car for the long term, spreading the whole job interest-free through Payment Assist is worth asking about when you book in. Call 01744 808586 for your registration priced properly, not guessed at. Most starter faults we see are the solenoid or the brushes rather than the motor itself, which is exactly why a proper test before ordering a part matters so much here.

How much does it cost to replace an alternator?

An alternator replacement typically costs £200 to £600 fitted, with the spread coming down to your make and model, whether the alternator sits at the top of the engine or is buried behind ancillaries, and whether you choose a brand-new or a quality reconditioned unit. Some alternators come off in under an hour with a socket set and patience; others, especially on engines where the inlet manifold or turbo pipework has to move out of the way first, take considerably longer and push the labour cost up noticeably on the final invoice.

We always test the alternator's actual charging output on the car before quoting anything, using a proper load tester rather than a visual guess or a dashboard light alone, because a slipping auxiliary belt or a tired battery reading under 12.4V can mimic a failing alternator almost exactly. The replacement includes checking the belt and tensioner pulley at the same time, at no extra charge. See vehicle diagnostics or call 01744 808586 for a price on yours.

How much does a starter motor cost on its own?

Budget £60 to £250 for the starter motor itself, with reconditioned units usually the cheaper and still genuinely reliable option against a brand-new part, typically around 30% less once bench-tested and warrantied. Reconditioned units are stripped, rebuilt with new bearings and brushes, then bench-tested before fitting, which is why they still carry a full warranty. The price also moves with access difficulty on your particular engine: a starter that needs the intake, a heat shield or an exhaust manifold removed just to reach the mounting bolts pushes the overall fitted job up considerably, even though the part itself hasn't changed price at all between cars.

Because we buy in volume as the largest independent garage in St Helens, we can usually match main-dealer part quality at a genuinely independent price, and most common starters can be sourced from local suppliers the same day you call. Ask for a like-for-like price against a main-dealer quote on 01744 808586 or see the full cost guide above for typical figures by job type. We also check the battery and earth strap at the same time, since a corroded connection is a common hidden cause that a like-for-like part swap alone would never fix.

Is it cheaper to repair an alternator, or should I replace it?

Repair is cheaper whenever the fault is a wearing part rather than damage to the alternator's core, most commonly worn carbon brushes or a failed voltage regulator, and it is always worth ruling that out with a proper test before ordering a full replacement unit. Where the internal rotor windings or the bearings have gone and are audibly rumbling or grinding under load, a remanufactured unit is the more sensible and genuinely longer-lasting fix rather than chasing a repair that simply won't hold once the car is back on the road.

Our free electrical check tells you which category your car actually falls into before you commit to either route, using a bench-style load test on the ramp rather than a guess based on age or mileage alone. Most brush and regulator repairs come in at a fraction of a new unit's price and can often be turned around the same day you drop the car off. See the full breakdown on repair vs replace, or call 01744 808586.

How much does it cost to repair a starter motor?

A starter motor repair, where the fault turns out to be the solenoid rather than the motor itself, is usually a fraction of a full replacement, often under £100 in parts plus around an hour of labour once the car is on the ramp. Where the carbon brushes are worn right through or the pinion gear teeth are visibly chewed from repeatedly failing to mesh cleanly with the flywheel ring gear, replacement is the more honest and genuinely lasting fix, rather than a cheap repair that fails again within weeks.

We diagnose exactly which category your fault falls into before quoting either way, since guessing wrong means paying for labour twice over on the same job. A sticking solenoid often shows up as a single loud click with the starter motor itself staying completely silent, which is a useful clue to mention when you call. Call 01744 808586 or see vehicle diagnostics to book a check.

How much does it cost to replace an alternator near me in St Helens?

Fastlane Autocare on Boundary Road replaces alternators every week for £200 to £600 fitted, with a free test first so you know it is genuinely needed before anything is ordered, quoted or fitted to your car. That price already includes the free test, so there is nothing extra to pay just to find out what is actually wrong. Being a local independent garage rather than a national chain means the diagnosis and the fitting usually happen on the same ramp, on the same day, rather than a part being ordered blind before your car has even been properly load-tested by anyone.

We also carry common alternators in stock or can usually source one within the day from local suppliers around St Helens, so most cars are back on the road that same afternoon. The workshop is open Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm and Saturday mornings until 12:30pm for exactly this kind of urgent electrical fault. Ring 01744 808586 or see vehicle diagnostics. Most cars booked in for this leave the same day, since alternators for common makes are usually either in stock already or sourced locally within a couple of hours.

What does a car alternator cost?

A replacement car alternator typically costs £120 to £350 for the part alone, rising toward £200 to £600 fitted once labour and a belt and tensioner check are all included in the final figure you actually pay. That belt and tensioner check is included in the price, not billed as a separate extra once you are already committed to the job. Higher-output alternators, common on diesels and on cars carrying a lot of onboard electronics such as heated seats, adaptive lighting and multiple screens, tend to price toward the top of that range regardless of how old the vehicle otherwise is.

We check the auxiliary belt and tensioner pulley alongside the alternator itself as standard on every job, since a worn belt or a seized tensioner will shorten a brand-new alternator's working life within weeks if it is left unchecked and unreplaced. See our alternator cost guide or call 01744 808586 for your car specifically. Belt tension is checked with a proper gauge rather than by feel, since a belt that looks fine to the eye can already be slipping enough to starve the alternator.

Where can I get my alternator tested near me?

We test alternators for free at our Boundary Road workshop in St Helens, on the ramp with a proper load tester and a multimeter, usually within a few minutes of the car actually going up on the lift. That test alone, run before you commit to anything, is what stops you paying for a part your car never actually needed. That matters because a tired battery reading below 12.4V at rest, a slipping auxiliary belt or a corroded earth strap can all produce the exact same dashboard warning light as a genuinely failed alternator, and only a real load test under running conditions reliably tells the two apart.

We would always rather test first than have you pay for a part your car didn't actually need, and the test itself takes only a few minutes once the car is safely up on the ramp. No booking fee applies for the electrical check itself. Book a free check on 01744 808586 or via vehicle diagnostics. The same load tester also checks the battery's own condition while the car is up, so you get a full charging-system picture rather than just an alternator pass or fail.

What does a warning light for the alternator or charging system mean?

A battery-shaped warning light that comes on while the engine is already running, on any make of car, means the charging system has stopped topping up the battery, not necessarily that the battery itself has failed or needs replacing. Ignoring it rarely makes the problem go away, and it tends to get noticeably worse the longer the car keeps being driven on it. Left running, the car is drawing purely on whatever charge is left stored in the battery, and once that runs down completely the engine will stop along with power steering assistance and brake servo support, which can happen with very little warning on a motorway.

Drive only as far as you genuinely need to reach somewhere safe, switch off anything non-essential such as heated seats, the stereo and rear demisters, and get it tested the same day if you possibly can. A genuine alternator fault rarely fixes itself and tends to get measurably worse the longer the engine keeps running on it. Call 01744 808586 or see vehicle diagnostics for a same-day check. Most warning lights like this are caught early enough that no further damage is done, provided the car gets tested within a day or two rather than driven on for weeks.

How much does it cost to replace a starter motor?

Fitting a replacement starter motor typically costs £150 to £450 all in, and access on your particular engine is what moves the final price far more than the cost of the part itself ever does. That price already covers the free test and the belt check, so there are no hidden extras added once the job starts. A starter that bolts straight to the side of the gearbox and is visible from underneath the car can be out and replaced in well under an hour, while one buried behind a turbo, the exhaust manifold or a subframe on some engines can take the better part of a full working day.

We quote per car once we have actually seen it up on the ramp, rather than from a generic online price chart that ignores how your specific model is laid out under the bonnet. The replacement is fully tested by starting the car repeatedly before it ever goes back out to you. Give us your registration on 01744 808586 for an accurate, no-obligation price.

Where can I get my alternator or starter motor fitted near me?

Fastlane Autocare fits alternators and starter motors at our Boundary Road workshop in St Helens most weeks of the year, with same-day fitting available once the correct part has been confirmed and is in stock at the garage. Most independent garages, us included, would always rather supply and fit the part as one job under a single warranty. We stock common alternators and starters for popular makes and models, and where we don't hold your specific one in stock already, we can usually source it from local suppliers around St Helens and have it fitted the very same day you call.

Every job starts with a free electrical check carried out on the ramp, so you are only ever paying for the part that is genuinely at fault, never a guess dressed up as a diagnosis. We are open Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 12:30pm for exactly this kind of job. See vehicle diagnostics or call 01744 808586. Most starter jobs booked before midday are collected the same afternoon, and every replacement is road-tested with several cold starts before the car is handed back to you.

Can I get a reconditioned alternator fitted?

Yes, we fit quality reconditioned alternators as standard on most jobs: fully stripped, rebuilt with new bearings, brushes and a new voltage regulator, then bench-tested under load before it ever goes back on the car. Both are genuinely good options depending on how long you plan to keep the car for and what you are comfortable spending. A reconditioned unit is typically around 30% cheaper than a brand-new equivalent and still carries a solid warranty, which is exactly why it is what we recommend as standard for most customers rather than automatically pushing the newest and most expensive option available.

A brand-new original-equipment alternator is also available where you would genuinely rather have one, usually carrying the longest warranty of the three options and slightly better resale value if you plan to sell the car on soon. Ask which suits your car and budget honestly on 01744 808586, or spread the whole job interest-free through Payment Assist. Both options are explained honestly before you commit to either, with no pressure to take the more expensive part if the reconditioned unit genuinely suits your car just as well.

Where can I find an auto electrician near me?

Fastlane Autocare carries out auto electrical diagnosis and repair at our Boundary Road workshop in St Helens, covering everything from alternators and starter motors through to wiring faults, dashboard warning lights and intermittent no-start complaints that other garages struggle with. We see this kind of intermittent electrical fault regularly, and most are traced within the same visit rather than needing a return trip. Electrical faults reward proper, methodical testing rather than guessing and swapping parts one at a time hoping something sticks, so we follow the actual circuit with a multimeter and a load tester rather than fitting parts on a hunch and hoping for the best.

That approach means you are never paying for parts your car genuinely didn't need in the first place, and most electrical faults are properly identified within the same visit rather than over several return trips. As the largest independent garage in St Helens, AA approved and Motor Ombudsman accredited, we see a high volume of electrical work across every make. See vehicle diagnostics or call 01744 808586 to book in.

How much does it cost to fit an alternator?

Fitting alone, once you already own the part, typically runs £80 to £250 in labour depending on how accessible the alternator actually is on your particular engine and how many ancillaries have to move first. That price already includes checking the belt, tensioner and battery, not just the alternator swap itself in isolation. Most independent garages, ours included, would rather supply and fit the part together as one job, so the whole thing, including checking the belt, tensioner and battery, is covered under one single warranty rather than leaving you to chase two separate suppliers if something later goes wrong with either part.

If you have already bought a part elsewhere, call ahead so we can confirm it is genuinely the correct one for your exact engine variant before booking you in, since a wrong-spec alternator is a surprisingly common and costly mistake to make online. Ring 01744 808586 or see the full cost guide. Labour on a straightforward alternator swap is charged in line with the manufacturer's standard fitting time for your exact model, not a flat rate that ignores how your engine is laid out.

Where is the starter motor located on my car?

On most cars the starter motor sits low down where the engine meets the gearbox, bolted directly to the bellhousing so its small pinion gear can reach out and mesh cleanly with the flywheel, though exact access varies enormously between different makes and models. On some cars it is clearly visible from underneath and reachable within minutes with a basic socket set; on others it sits hidden behind the inlet manifold, a turbocharger, or a subframe, and the whole surrounding assembly has to be worked around just to reach the two mounting bolts holding it in place.

That access difference is the single biggest reason two cars with an absolutely identical starter fault can end up with very different labour figures on the final invoice. We can tell you exactly what your specific model involves, and roughly how long it will genuinely take, on 01744 808586.

Do fast-fit centres and parts shops fit alternators and starter motors?

Most high-street parts and tyre shops focus on tyres, batteries and exhausts rather than alternator or starter motor diagnosis, and will usually refer a genuine electrical fault straight on to a general garage rather than attempt to take it on themselves. We would always rather explain that honestly upfront than quote an unrealistic time just to win the booking over the phone. An alternator or starter fault needs proper testing with a real load tester to confirm which part is actually at fault before anything is ordered, which sits far more naturally with a general garage workshop than with a fast-fit bay geared entirely around quick tyre and exhaust changes.

We carry out the full diagnosis and the fitting in one single visit at our St Helens workshop, so there is no referral, no second appointment and no waiting around for a part that turns out to be the wrong one. See vehicle diagnostics or call 01744 808586. Even where access is genuinely difficult, we would rather explain honestly why a job is taking longer than quote a false, unrealistically short time just to win the booking.

What is a realistic price for a brand-new alternator?

A brand-new, original-equipment-quality alternator typically costs £250 to £600 fitted, sitting above a reconditioned unit in upfront price but carrying the longest warranty of the options generally available to you as a customer. A brand-new unit is the safer choice mainly if you are planning to keep the car for the long haul. We would recommend new mainly where you are genuinely planning to keep the car for several years to come, since the extra cost over a reconditioned unit is mostly about long-term longevity rather than any real, noticeable difference in day-to-day charging performance once it is actually fitted and running.

For most customers keeping a car for a more typical two-to-four-year period before changing it, a reconditioned unit gives near-identical reliability for meaningfully less outlay upfront. Talk through honestly which suits your own plans for the car on 01744 808586. We also see cars that have already had the wrong part fitted elsewhere, and re-testing those properly before ordering again is a routine part of this kind of work for us.

Do you replace alternators and starter motors for customers outside St Helens?

Yes — alongside St Helens itself, we regularly replace alternators and starter motors for customers travelling in from Liverpool, Manchester, Wigan and Warrington, since a proper electrical fault genuinely deserves a real diagnosis rather than a guess at the nearest available fast-fit centre. The workshop sits just off the motorway network on Boundary Road, so it is a genuinely straightforward run in from most of Merseyside and the wider North West, and a good number of customers combine the trip with an MOT or a routine service on the same visit.

Ring ahead with your registration so we can have the correct part ready and waiting before you actually arrive, keeping the whole visit as short as it can realistically be. Call 01744 808586 or see vehicle diagnostics. New units are also more readily available same-day for less common makes, where a reconditioned option can sometimes take an extra day or two to source locally.

What is the difference between a failing alternator and a failing starter motor?

The clearest test is what actually happens when you turn the key: a single dead click with the dashboard lights staying bright and normal points squarely to the starter, while an engine that runs perfectly fine but the battery warning light stays lit while driving points instead to the alternator. A starter fault stops the engine turning over completely, so the car simply won't start at all; an alternator fault lets the car run and even start normally at first, but only until the battery it has quietly stopped recharging eventually runs flat, sometimes not for several days.

If you are genuinely not sure which one you are looking at, our free electrical check identifies it correctly within minutes on the ramp, rather than you guessing at home and paying to replace entirely the wrong part first. Call 01744 808586 or see battery life for the related battery side of this same problem.
