What’s your air con doing?

The symptom usually points to the cause — here’s what we check.

Blowing warm or not coldThe most common one — usually low refrigerant from a slow leak, but it can be the compressor or a blockage. Our diagnostic tells you which, so a re-gas isn’t wasted.
Takes ages to get coldA system low on gas or a struggling compressor cools slowly. We measure the pressures to see what’s really going on.
Musty or damp smellBacteria build up on the evaporator. An antibacterial clean clears the smell — and we’ll check your pollen filter too.
Noisy when you switch it onRattles or squeals are often the compressor clutch or a failing bearing. We find the source before it fails completely.
No air from the ventsIf the fan isn’t blowing it’s the blower motor, resistor or a blend flap — a different fault to a gas problem, and we test for it.
Wet passenger floorA blocked air-con drain dumps condensation inside the car. We clear it and check for damp.
Windscreen won’t clearAir con dries the air to demist fast — if it’s not working the screen stays foggy, usually a gas or flap issue.
Cold one side, warm the otherOn dual-zone systems that points to a blend motor or control fault rather than gas — we diagnose the climate control.

Why a re-gas alone often isn’t the answer

If your air con has lost its chill, topping it up with gas without finding the leak just means it’ll be warm again in a few weeks. We diagnose first — leak-test, pressure-check and inspect the compressor and condenser — so you only pay for what actually fixes it. Air Con Diagnostics: How We Find The Fault

Air con diagnostics is the part most places skip. Gauges go on first so the high and low side pressures can be read against the manufacturer figures, because those two numbers alone rule out a surprising number of faults. From there it is a leak hunt — UV dye through the system, nitrogen held under pressure, or an electronic sniffer around the condenser and evaporator.

Only once the fault is named does anything get replaced or refilled. That order is the whole point of air con diagnostics: it is what stops you buying refrigerant twice, and it is why we would rather charge for an hour of testing than sell you a re-gas that leaks away by August.

If your air conditioning has failed alongside overheating, steam or a warning light, stop and ring us rather than pressing on — the Highway Code guidance on breakdowns is worth two minutes of anyone’s time. Air con diagnostics can wait; a cooked engine cannot.

Air Con Diagnostics: Your Questions Answered

The questions below are the ones we are actually asked about air con diagnostics, answered properly rather than in a line.

A re-gas puts refrigerant back in; it does not tell you where the old refrigerant went. Every system loses a little each year, but if yours went cold-to-warm in a single season there is a leak, and refilling it pays for gas that escapes again. Air con diagnostics finds the leak first with dye or a nitrogen pressure test, so the repair is done once. If the system is genuinely just low we will say so and book an air con regas instead.

Three methods, chosen to suit the fault. UV dye is added and the system run, then every joint, hose and seal is checked under ultraviolet light for a bright trace. Nitrogen pressure testing pressurises the system and holds it, so a drop reveals a leak even when there is no gas left to trace. An electronic sniffer picks up refrigerant vapour around condensers and evaporators hidden behind panels. Most leaks show on the first method; awkward ones need the second.

Ring 01744 808586 for a quote on your vehicle. Air con diagnostics is charged as its own job rather than hidden inside a re-gas price, because the work is genuinely different, and we will tell you honestly whether the symptom you describe even needs diagnostics or whether a straightforward re-gas is likely enough. If the repair goes ahead with us you are not paying twice to find out what is wrong. Payment Assist is available to spread it.

That pattern usually means the system is low rather than empty. There is enough pressure to cool for a while, then the low-pressure switch cuts the compressor out to protect it and you get warm air until pressure recovers. It can also be a failing pressure switch, or an icing evaporator restricting airflow. All three feel identical from the driver seat and are told apart by putting gauges on the system, which is where air con diagnostics starts.

No, and this is the most common misunderstanding we hear. Your air conditioning dries the air for demisting, so a failed system means a screen that takes far longer to clear on a cold damp morning. The compressor also needs running regularly to keep its seals lubricated, and a system left switched off all winter is far more likely to leak by spring. Running it ten minutes a week, even in December, genuinely extends its life.

They are different refrigerants and they are not interchangeable. Vehicles built roughly before 2015 use R134a; most newer vehicles use R1234yf, which costs considerably more and needs separate equipment to avoid cross-contamination. Putting the wrong gas in, or mixing the two, contaminates the recovery machine and can damage components. We identify which your vehicle takes before anything is connected, which is part of why air con diagnostics comes before any gas goes near it.

The car is safe to drive. What is worth knowing is that a compressor run without enough refrigerant is run without enough lubrication, because the oil circulates with the gas. That is how a cheap leak becomes a seized compressor, which is a far larger bill and can send debris right through the system. If yours has stopped being cold, switch it off and get it looked at rather than leaving it on hoping it recovers.

That smell is bacteria and mould growing on a damp evaporator behind the dashboard, not a fault with the cooling itself. It is more common on cars used for short journeys where the system never fully dries out. An anti-bacterial treatment clears it, and switching the air con off a couple of minutes before the end of a journey while leaving the fan running helps dry the evaporator so it does not return. Mention it when you book so we bring the treatment.

Yes. Vans, pickups and light commercials are routine and the process is the same, though access is often tighter and some systems carry a larger charge. If the vehicle is part of a fleet, mention it when you ring — we handle commercial fleet repairs and can usually work around your schedule rather than taking a vehicle off the road at your busiest time.

Allow around an hour for most vehicles. Gauges go on, pressures are read against the manufacturer figures, and the system is checked for leaks. A dye test needs the system run and then re-inspected, so that can mean leaving the vehicle with us or coming back. Where the fault turns out to be electrical rather than refrigerant it moves across to full car diagnostics, and we tell you before that happens.

It happens more often than people expect. Compressor clutches, pressure switches, blend motors and climate control modules all produce no cold air without a single gram of refrigerant having escaped. Those are read with a scan tool and live data rather than gauges. Because we do vehicle diagnostics in the same workshop, the job does not get handed to somebody else halfway through.

We are on Boundary Road in St Helens and cover the towns around it, including Warrington, Wigan, Widnes, Prescot, Rainhill, Haydock and Newton-le-Willows — every town listed further down this page has its own page. Bring the vehicle to the garage, or if the fault can be looked at where the vehicle sits, ask about the mobile service. Ring and tell us where you are.

No — air conditioning is not part of the MOT test, so a system that does not cool will not fail you. The exception is indirect: if a fault means your windscreen demists badly then visibility can become an issue, and a compressor that has seized can affect the auxiliary belt driving other components. Worth sorting before your MOT test rather than after it.

Most manufacturers suggest every two years and that is a reasonable rule. Systems lose a little refrigerant every year as a matter of physics, so performance drops gradually and most people do not notice until a hot day arrives and it is not cold any more. A check every couple of years catches a slow leak while it is still cheap and keeps the compressor lubricated. If yours has never been done and the car is over five years old, it is due.

Yes, and it is worth knowing they work differently. Electric and hybrid vehicles use an electrically driven compressor rather than one turned by the engine, and many run high-voltage cables into the air conditioning system. That means the wrong approach is genuinely dangerous, and it also means a fault is as likely to be electrical as refrigerant. We handle these through EV diagnostics and hybrid diagnostics, using the correct refrigerant and the correct isolation procedure.

No. Air con diagnostics is a job in its own right, and you are paying for the answer, not for a commitment. You will be told what the fault is, what it needs and what it costs, and you are free to take that away and think about it. Most people go ahead because they already have the vehicle with us and the parts are on order, but there is no obligation and we will not pressure you. If you would rather spread the cost, Payment Assist is available at 0% interest on a soft search.
