Ten seconds. The button below opens WhatsApp with the message already written — you just press send.

What we do at Boundary Road

The MOT, the diagnosis and the repair — all under one roof

Most garages send you somewhere else for at least one of those. We do not, which is why a failed MOT here costs you one trip instead of three.

MOT Testing

£40 online. Fail here and we repair it and retest it free — you drive away sorted, not booking a second trip.

Book an MOT

Vehicle Diagnostics

We read live data, not just a code. So the right part gets replaced once, instead of three times.

Tyres & Alignment

Everything under one roof

Pick what you need and see exactly how we do it

The four jobs that come through the door most often at Boundary Road. Tap through for the detail, not a sales line.

MOT testing from £40

Class 1, 2 and 4 MOTs at Boundary Road. Book online and £40 is what you pay — it does not move once the car is on the ramp.

  • Fail and we repair it here, then retest it free
  • Motorcycle MOTs too, capped by the DVSA at £29.65
  • Test up to a month early and keep your renewal date
  • Wait in reception, or drop the keys and collect later

We find the fault, not a guess

A warning light is a symptom. Plenty of garages read a code, fit the part it names and hand the car back with the light still on.

  • Live data from the running engine, not just a code read
  • Engine management, ABS, airbag, DPF, AdBlue and EGR
  • Manufacturer-level kit for Audi, BMW, Mercedes and VW
  • Intermittent faults others have given up on

Servicing that keeps the warranty

Interim, full and manufacturer-schedule servicing on every make, using the right parts and oils for your car.

  • Manufacturer schedule, so the warranty stays intact
  • Book it with your MOT — one drop-off instead of two
  • Everything found is priced before we touch it
  • Advisories explained: what needs doing, what can wait

Tyres, brakes and an honest answer

Budget through to premium — Continental, Michelin, Bridgestone, Dunlop, Goodyear, Hankook and Pirelli, fitted the same day.

  • If a tyre has safe legal life left, we will say so
  • Four-wheel alignment — why a new set wears out early
  • Brakes: grinding, squealing, vibration or a soft pedal
  • Spread it over 3, 4 or 6 months at 0% with Payment Assist

Straight answers

What is your car actually doing?

Pick the one that sounds like yours. We will tell you what usually causes it, what we check, and what it costs to put right.

What that light actually means

A light is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Steady usually means drive gently and get it read soon. Flashing means stop as soon as it is safe — that is normally a misfire that can destroy the catalytic converter within minutes.

  • Live data read from the running engine, not just a stored code
  • Engine management, ABS, airbag, DPF, AdBlue and EGR
  • Manufacturer-level kit for BMW, Audi, Mercedes and VW
  • You are told the fault and the price before anything starts, or book it in online

Why it will not turn over

Four things cause most non-starts and they need telling apart before anyone buys a part. We test the battery under load, check charging output, then look at the starter and immobiliser — often as an auto electrical job.

  • Battery tested under load, not just a voltage reading
  • Charging system and alternator output checked properly
  • Starter, immobiliser and fuel delivery faults
  • We can come to you, or book it into the garage

Limp mode explained

Limp mode is the engine protecting itself from a fault it has already logged. The job is finding which one, rather than clearing the light and hoping. Sometimes it is the gearbox reacting rather than the engine.

  • DPF blockage and failed regeneration
  • Turbo, boost pressure and intake leaks
  • AdBlue and emissions faults
  • Sensor faults that imitate far bigger problems — see warning lights

What the noise is telling you

Noise is the early warning. Grinding usually means the pads are gone and the discs are being damaged, which turns a small bill into a big one. Pulling or a soft pedal points at a caliper or hydraulic fault.

  • Pads, discs, calipers and handbrake adjustment
  • Vibration under braking, usually warped discs
  • Pulling to one side, normally a sticking caliper. Alignment is checked too
  • Free brake check whenever the car is in with us

One trip instead of three

We are a test centre and a workshop, which matters most when a car fails. It comes off the test, onto our ramp, and back through at no extra charge — see the MOT retest rules.

  • Class 1, 2 and 4 MOTs from £40 booked online
  • Fail and the repair is quoted before anything starts
  • Free retest, because the work is done here
  • Test up to a month early and keep your renewal date — book online

Describe it in your own words

Most people describe a noise, a smell or a feeling rather than a fault code, and that is genuinely enough to start with. It might end up being a service, tyres or alignment.

  • Knocks, rattles and vibrations at certain speeds
  • Smells, smoke and leaks on the driveway
  • Gearbox, clutch and drivetrain problems
  • No charge for asking — or go straight to servicing or an MOT

Fastlane Autocare St Helens has been looking after drivers from Boundary Road for years. Ramps, an MOT bay, diagnostic equipment and a reception you can actually sit in — all in one building, a few minutes from the town centre.

It is the same technicians every time, so your car gets remembered rather than re-diagnosed. And because we are a test centre and a workshop, the MOT, the fault-finding and the repair all happen here.

  • Independent, not a chainNo script, no upsell targets. The person who books your car in is the person who works on it.
  • DVSA test centre on siteClass 1, 2 and 4. The MOT bay and the workshop are the same building, so a fail goes straight onto a ramp.

Not seeing your make?

We work on everything, and most of the volume through the door is not German at all — Vauxhall, Toyota, Kia, Nissan, Renault, Peugeot, Seat, Skoda, Hyundai, Citroën, Fiat, Volvo and MINI, plus Ford, Honda, Mazda, Suzuki, Dacia, Jeep, Cupra, Lexus and Isuzu.

Whatever the badge, the process is the same: diagnose it properly, price it before we start, and do the work here rather than sending you somewhere else.

What it costs

The prices, before you have to ask for them

Most garage websites make you ring to find out anything. Here is what we can tell you up front — and where a price genuinely depends on your car, we say so rather than quoting a range we cannot stand behind.

Why some of it says “on your reg”

A service on a 1.0 petrol hatchback and a 3.0 diesel estate are not the same job, and pretending otherwise is how people end up with a bill bigger than the quote. Send the registration and you get the real figure for your car — and if it is a big one, Payment Assist spreads it over 3, 4 or 6 months at 0%.

Test centre and workshop in one

A test-only centre fails your car and hands it back. You then find a garage, book the repair and drive back for a retest — three journeys. Here the car comes off the test, straight onto our ramp, and the retest is free.

We diagnose before we replace

Reading a code and fitting the part it names is guessing. We read live data from the running engine and test the circuit, so you are not paying for parts the car never needed.

4.9 from real Google reviews

St Helens garage • FAQs

Questions drivers ask us

The things people search for before choosing a garage in St Helens — prices, retests, opening hours, paying monthly and what we will and will not tell you about your car.

Which garage should I use in St Helens?

We are on Boundary Road, a few minutes from the town centre, and we are both a DVSA test centre and a full workshop. That combination is the thing worth checking anywhere you go, because it decides what happens when a car fails.

A test-only centre fails your car and hands it back. You then find a garage, book the repair and drive back for a retest — three journeys. Here the car comes off the test, onto our ramp, and the retest is free.

We are AA and RAC approved and rated 4.9 on Google. Call 01744 808586.

How much is a car service in St Helens?

It depends whether you need an interim or a full service, and on your engine size — give us the registration and we will give you the exact figure before you book.

An interim covers oil and filter plus a full safety inspection. A full service adds air, fuel and cabin filters and a deeper check. Both are done to the manufacturer schedule, so a warranty stays intact.

See car servicing in St Helens or call 01744 808586.

Can I get an MOT while I wait?

Yes — an MOT takes about an hour and you are welcome to wait. Reception has a tea and coffee machine and a vending machine, and the town centre is a few minutes away on foot.

If it needs work afterwards we tell you what and how long before anything starts, so you decide whether to wait or leave it with us.

Say which you would prefer when you book: 01744 808586.

How much is an MOT in St Helens?

MOTs start from £40 booked online. That is the Class 4 price for cars and small vans, and it is the price you pay — it does not change once the car is on the ramp.

Motorcycles are Class 1 and Class 2, capped by the DVSA at £29.65. Fail with us and the repair is quoted before anything starts, with a free retest.

Book your MOT in St Helens.

Are you an AA and RAC approved garage?

Yes — Fastlane Autocare is approved by both. Each scheme audits the garage, the equipment and the way customers are treated, so the standard is not simply our own claim about ourselves.

It also means the work is documented properly, which matters if you sell the car later or need to fall back on a warranty.

Where are you, and what are your opening hours?

232-254 Boundary Road, St Helens, WA10 2PZ — open Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 12:30pm. We are on the edge of the town centre rather than out on an industrial estate, and there is parking on site.

Saturday mornings are the busiest slot of the week because they keep the car out of your working day, so book ahead.

Get directions.

Do I need to book, or can I turn up?

Booking is better, and it takes a minute. We can often fit same-day work in, but booking means you choose the slot rather than take what is left — and Saturday mornings go first.

Book online or call 01744 808586 and we will find you the next free slot.

Can I spread the cost of a big repair?

Yes — Payment Assist splits the bill over three, four or six months at 0% interest. The total does not go up for spreading it.

It is a soft credit search, so applying will not mark your credit file, and it is set up at the counter while the car goes onto the ramp. It covers repairs, servicing, tyres and MOT failure work.

Ask when you book, or call 01744 808586.

Do you have an auto electrician?

Yes — auto electrical fault finding is one of the things we get asked for most. Parasitic battery drains, immobiliser and key faults, lighting and wiring problems, and modules that will not talk to each other.

These are the jobs that get passed around, because they need live testing rather than a code read. We have the equipment to trace them properly.

See auto electrician in St Helens.

Do you work on BMW, Audi and Mercedes?

Yes — we run manufacturer-level diagnostic equipment for BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Land Rover, Jaguar, Porsche and Aston Martin. That means coding, live data and module-level fault finding, not a generic reader.

Servicing is to the manufacturer schedule, so a main-dealer warranty stays intact while you pay independent-garage prices.

See BMW servicing and repairs.

Do you do four-wheel alignment?

Yes, full four-wheel alignment, and the check itself is free. We measure all four wheels rather than tracking the front only, because rear alignment is what quietly ruins a set of tyres.

Worth doing after suspension or steering work, after a heavy pothole, or whenever tyres wear unevenly on one edge.

See free alignment check.

Do you repair automatic gearboxes?

Yes — diagnosis first, because "gearbox trouble" is often something cheaper. Harsh or delayed shifts, slipping and limp mode can come from solenoids, a mechatronic unit, low or degraded fluid, or an engine fault the gearbox is reacting to.

We test properly before recommending anything major, so you are not quoted for a rebuild you may not need.

See gearbox repairs or call 01744 808586.

How much is an air conditioning regas?

It depends which gas your car takes — R134a systems are the cheaper of the two, and R1234yf costs more because the refrigerant itself is far more expensive. Give us the registration and we will confirm the exact price.

A regas is pointless if the system leaks, so we vacuum test first. If it will not hold vacuum we find the leak instead of selling you gas that escapes again.

See air con regas.

Which cars have a wet belt?

Wet belts are fitted to Ford EcoBoost 1.0 petrol engines, the PSA 1.2 PureTech used across Peugeot, Citroën, Vauxhall and DS, Ford EcoBlue diesels, and a number of Volkswagen, Fiat and Toyota engines. The belt runs inside the engine, bathed in oil.

As it degrades it sheds material into the sump and can block the oil pick-up, which destroys the engine rather than just stopping it.

Full list on our wet belt guide, or call 01744 808586 with your registration.

When should a wet belt be replaced?

Most manufacturers now say every 6 years or around 100,000 miles, and many independents recommend closer to 4 to 6 years or 60,000 to 80,000 miles. Short journeys, extended oil intervals and the wrong oil all shorten belt life.

The failure mode is what matters. A normal cambelt snaps and stops the car; a wet belt breaks up gradually and can starve the engine of oil first.

See wet belt replacement costs.

Are corroded coil springs an MOT failure?

Yes, if the corrosion is bad enough to weaken the spring, and always if it has cracked or snapped. Light surface rust on its own is usually an advisory rather than a failure.

Springs go from advisory to failure faster than almost anything else. Once a coil is pitted it keeps rotting, and they tend to break in cold weather or going into a pothole.

If last year’s certificate mentioned springs, get them checked before the test rather than after.

Still not sure?

Tell us what the car is doing and we will tell you what it needs. No charge for asking.
